Necessary conditions for deterministic and stochastic maximal regularity

We study the role of Banach space geometry in deterministic and stochastic maximal regularity. We first construct an example showing that the UMD assumption in the characterisation of maximal $L^p$-regularity in terms of $R$-sectoriality cannot be omitted. Combining this construction with an equivalence between stochastic maximal regularity and deterministic maximal regularity on the $2$-concavification of the underlying space, we obtain an operator on a UMD Banach function space of type $2$ that has a bounded $H^\infty$-calculus of angle zero, but fails stochastic maximal $L^p$-regularity (SMR$_p$) for every $p\in[2,\infty)$. Motivated by this example, we study the Banach space geometry hypothesis underlying SMR$_p$ more closely. This is an $R$-boundedness condition $(S_p)$ for stochastic convolution operators. For UMD spaces $X$ of type $2$, we show that this condition is not only sufficient, but also necessary for two canonical test operators: a diagonal multiplier on a Rademacher space and, for $q>2$, the Laplacian on $L^q(\mathbb R^d;X)$. Finally, we prove that its interval-kernel and exponential-kernel formulations are equivalent and that, at the endpoint $p=2$, condition $(S_2)$ holds if and only if $X$ is isomorphic to a Hilbert space.

A solution to the inverse generator problem and related questions

We give a negative solution to the inverse generator problem on Hilbert spaces. More precisely, we construct a bounded operator $A$ with dense range on a Hilbert space $H$ that generates a bounded, strongly stable $C_0$-semigroup, while $A^{-1}$ does not generate a $C_0$-semigroup. We also construct an exponentially stable generator $A$ with $0 \in \rho(A)$ such that the inverse semigroup is unbounded and grows at least double logarithmically. For the latter generator, every Cayley transform satisfies the ordinary Kreiss resolvent condition but is neither strongly Kreiss bounded nor power bounded. Moreover, its powers satisfy a doubly logarithmic lower bound. Therefore, the Crank--Nicolson scheme is unstable in operator norm both for every fixed step size over long times and under mesh refinement at any fixed final time. Our counterexamples are deduced from a common finite-dimensional construction. For $\alpha\in(0,1)$, we use explicit bases of $\mathbb C^{2n}$ whose partial-sum projections are uniformly bounded and whose unconditionality constants are comparable to $n^\alpha$. The matrices underlying the counterexamples are then obtained as Schauder multipliers with respect to these bases, using a sequence of eigenvalues whose moduli decay doubly exponentially.

An optimal local theory for reaction-diffusion equations driven by non-trace-class noise

We study local well-posedness for a class of stochastic reaction-diffusion equations driven by multiplicative, possibly colored, noise. The interaction between rough stochastic forcing and polynomial nonlinearities naturally leads to solutions with low spatial regularity, making the treatment of the nonlinear terms delicate. Our main contribution is a general local existence and uniqueness theory for SPDEs with rough noise and highly irregular initial data. The framework also yields new results in standard noise regimes, including trace-class noise and space-time white noise. We identify the critical initial-data spaces for a wide range of nonlinearities, and we establish instantaneous parabolic regularization, general blow-up criteria, and sufficient conditions for positivity preservation. We apply the abstract theory to several prototypical models, including the stochastic Allen-Cahn, Burgers, Fisher-KPP, and coupled Gray-Scott equations. Finally, in the one-dimensional space-time white-noise setting, we combine our local theory with existing global a priori results in a highly singular regime.

Maximal regularity for evolution equations with critical singular perturbations

Assuming $A$ has maximal $L^p$-regularity, this paper investigates perturbations of $A$ by time-dependent operators $B$ that are unbounded and satisfy a critical $L^q$-integrability condition in time. We establish two main results. The first proves maximal $L^p$-regularity for the critical endpoint case, generalizing previous work by Pr\"uss and Schnaubelt (2001). The second develops a weighted maximal regularity theory for mixed-scale perturbations, motivated by the linearized skeleton equations appearing in large deviations theory for stochastic PDEs.

Sharp bounds for non-trace class noise and applications to SPDEs

In the study of stochastic PDEs with colored, non-trace class space-time noise, one frequently encounters Gaussian series of the form $$g \sum_{n\geq 1} \gamma_n \mu_n f_n, $$ where $(\gamma_n)_{n}$ is a sequence of standard independent Gaussian variables, $g$ is an $L^\eta(\mathcal{O})$ function, $(\mu_n)_{n}$ is a sequence of scalars, and $(f_n)_n$ is an orthonormal system in $L^2(\mathcal{O})$ where $\mathcal{O} \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ is an open set. In this manuscript, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the above sum to converge in Bessel potential spaces $H^{-s,q}(\mathcal{O})$. The latter can be interpreted as a Sobolev embedding for Gaussian series. Our main theorem is formulated using weighted sequence spaces that encode the $L^\infty$-growth of the orthonormal system $(f_n)_{n}$, a feature that is crucial for obtaining sharp estimates. We apply our results to the stochastic heat equation with additive non-trace class noise. In this case, our conditions capture the scaling relationship between the heat operator and the coloring of the noise.

Operator-valued Fourier multipliers of bounded s-variation

In this paper, we establish an operator-valued Fourier multiplier theorem in weighted Lebesgue spaces, Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces, assuming the multiplier has $\mathcal{R}$-bounded range and satisfies an $\ell^r$-summability condition on its bounded $s$-variation seminorms over dyadic intervals. The exponents $r$ and $s$ reflect the relationship between the geometric properties of the underlying Banach spaces (type and cotype) and the boundedness of Fourier multiplier operators. As our main tool we prove a weighted vector-valued variational Carleson inequality and deduce an estimate of Littlewood--Paley--Rubio de Francia type.

A stochastic flow approach to De Giorgi-Nash-Moser estimates for SPDEs with smooth transport noise

The celebrated De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory ensures that solutions to uniformly elliptic or parabolic PDEs are bounded and H\"older continuous, even with merely bounded measurable coefficients. For parabolic SPDEs with transport noise, boundedness has recently been established, but H\"older continuity remains a key open problem in the regularity theory of parabolic SPDEs. In this work, we resolve this question under the assumption that the noise coefficients are sufficiently regular in space. Our approach relies on Kunita's stochastic method of characteristics, which allows us to transform the original SPDE-via a stochastic flow of diffeomorphisms-into a random PDE to which the classical De Giorgi-Nash-Moser estimates apply. This program is accomplished through new a-priori estimates for the inverse of stochastic flows of diffeomorphisms, and a novel version of the It\^o-Wentzell formula adapted to rough random fields. To demonstrate the applicability of our results, we establish the existence of global, regular solutions to quasilinear SPDEs with transport noise.

A Note on a threshold for temporal regularity of stochastic PDEs

We consider solutions to linear parabolic SPDEs of the form \[ \mathrm{d} u(t) + A u(t)\, \mathrm{d} t = g(t)\, \mathrm{d} \beta, \qquad u(0)=0, \] where $A$ is a positive, invertible, and self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space $X$, $\beta$ is a one-dimensional Brownian motion, and $g(t)\equiv x\in X$. We show that, for all $\alpha\in [0,\frac{1}{2}),$ \[ u\in L^2(\Omega;W^{\alpha,2}(0,T;\mathsf{D}(A^{1/2}))) \quad \text{ if and only if }\quad x\in \mathsf{D}(A^{\alpha}). \] In particular, there is a lack of persistence of temporal regularity from the diffusion coefficient $g$ to the solution, and additional spatial regularity is required to improve time regularity. In particular, this provides a counterexample to a conjectured time-regularity property for monotone stochastic evolution equations posed by D. Breit and M. Hofmanov\'a in [C. R. Math. Acad. Sci. Paris 354 (2016), 33-37].

Functional calculus on weighted Sobolev spaces for the Laplacian on rough domains

We study the Laplace operator on domains subject to Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. We show that these operators admit a bounded $H^{\infty}$-functional calculus on weighted Sobolev spaces, where the weights are powers of the distance to the boundary. Our analysis applies to bounded $C^{1,\lambda}$-domains with $\lambda\in[0,1]$, revealing a crucial trade-off: lower domain regularity can be compensated by enlarging the weight exponent. As a primary consequence, we establish maximal regularity for the corresponding heat equation. This extends the well-posedness theory for parabolic equations to domains with minimal smoothness, where classical methods are inapplicable.

Discrete stochastic maximal regularity

In this paper, we investigate discrete regularity estimates for a broad class of temporal numerical schemes for parabolic stochastic evolution equations. We provide a characterization of discrete stochastic maximal $\ell^p$-regularity in terms of its continuous counterpart, thereby establishing a unified framework that yields numerous new discrete regularity results. Moreover, as a consequence of the continuous-time theory, we establish several important properties of discrete stochastic maximal regularity such as extrapolation in the exponent $p$ and with respect to a power weight. Furthermore, employing the $H^\infty$-functional calculus, we derive a powerful discrete maximal estimate in the trace space norm $D_A(1-\frac1p,p)$ for $p \in [2,\infty)$.

Nonlinear SPDEs and Maximal Regularity: An Extended Survey

In this survey, we provide an in-depth exposition of our recent results on the well-posedness theory for stochastic evolution equations, employing maximal regularity techniques. The core of our approach is an abstract notion of critical spaces, which, when applied to nonlinear SPDEs, coincides with the concept of scaling-invariant spaces. This framework leads to several sharp blow-up criteria and enables one to obtain instantaneous regularization results. Additionally, we refine and unify our previous results, while also presenting several new contributions. In the second part of the survey, we apply the abstract results to several concrete SPDEs. In particular, we give applications to stochastic perturbations of quasi-geostrophic equations, Navier-Stokes equations, and reaction-diffusion systems (including Allen--Cahn, Cahn--Hilliard and Lotka--Volterra models). Moreover, for the Navier--Stokes equations, we establish new Serrin-type blow-up criteria. While some applications are addressed using $L^2$-theory, many require a more general $L^p(L^q)$-framework. In the final section, we outline several open problems, covering both abstract aspects of stochastic evolution equations, and concrete questions in the study of linear and nonlinear SPDEs.

An extended variational setting for critical SPDEs with L\'evy noise

The critical variational setting was recently introduced and shown to be applicable to many important SPDEs not covered by the classical variational setting. In this paper, we extend the critical variational setting in several ways. We introduce a flexibility in the range space for the nonlinear drift term, due to which certain borderline cases can now also be included. An example of this is the Allen-Cahn equation in dimension two in the weak setting. In addition to this, we allow the drift to be singular in time, which is something that naturally arises in the study of the skeleton equations for large deviation principles for SPDEs. Last but not least, we present the theory in the case of L\'evy noise for which the critical setting was not available yet.

Improved polynomial decay for unbounded semigroups

We obtain polynomial decay rates for $C_{0}$-semigroups, assuming that the resolvent grows polynomially at infinity in the complex right half-plane. Our results do not require the semigroup to be uniformly bounded, and for unbounded semigroups we improve upon previous results by, for example, removing a logarithmic loss on non-Hilbertian Banach spaces.

Functional calculus on weighted Sobolev spaces for the Laplacian on the half-space

In this paper, we consider the Laplace operator on the half-space with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We prove that this operator admits a bounded $H^\infty$-calculus on Sobolev spaces with power weights measuring the distance to the boundary. These weights do not necessarily belong to the class of Muckenhoupt $A_p$ weights. We additionally study the corresponding Dirichlet and Neumann heat semigroup. It is shown that these semigroups, in contrast to the $L^p$-case, have polynomial growth. Moreover, maximal regularity results for the heat equation are derived on inhomogeneous and homogeneous weighted Sobolev spaces.

Large Deviations for Stochastic Evolution Equations in the Critical Variational Setting

Using the weak convergence approach, we prove the large deviation principle (LDP) for solutions to quasilinear stochastic evolution equations with small Gaussian noise in the critical variational setting, a recently developed general variational framework. No additional assumptions are made apart from those required for well-posedness. In particular, no monotonicity is required, nor a compact embedding in the Gelfand triple. Moreover, we allow for flexible growth of the diffusion coefficient, including gradient noise. This leads to numerous applications for which the LDP was not established yet, in particular equations on unbounded domains with gradient noise. Since our framework includes the 2D Navier-Stokes and Boussinesq equations with gradient noise and unbounded domains, our results resolve an open problem that has remained unsolved for over 15 years.

Counterexamples to maximal regularity for operators in divergence form

In this paper, we present counterexamples to maximal $L^p$-regularity for a parabolic PDE. The example is a second-order operator in divergence form with space and time-dependent coefficients. It is well-known from Lions' theory that such operators admit maximal $L^2$-regularity on $H^{-1}$ under a coercivity condition on the coefficients, and without any regularity conditions in time and space. We show that in general one cannot expect maximal $L^p$-regularity on $H^{-1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ or $L^2$-regularity on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$.

An extrapolation result in the variational setting: improved regularity, compactness, and applications to quasilinear systems

In this paper we consider the variational setting for SPDE on a Gelfand triple $(V, H, V^*)$. Under the standard conditions on a linear coercive pair $(A,B)$, and a symmetry condition on $A$ we manage to extrapolate the classical $L^2$-estimates in time to $L^p$-estimates for some $p>2$ without any further conditions on $(A,B)$. As a consequence we obtain several other a priori regularity results of the paths of the solution. Under the assumption that $V$ embeds compactly into $H$, we derive a universal compactness result quantifying over all $(A,B)$. As an application of the compactness result we prove global existence of weak solutions to a system of second order quasi-linear equations.

Strongly Kreiss Bounded Operators in UMD Banach Spaces

In this paper we give growth estimates for $\|T^n\|$ for $n\to \infty$ in the case $T$ is a strongly Kreiss bounded operator on a UMD Banach space $X$. In several special cases we provide explicit growth rates. This includes known cases such as Hilbert and $L^p$-spaces, but also intermediate UMD spaces such as non-commutative $L^p$-spaces and variable Lebesgue spaces.
