From Natural Language to Control Signals: A Conceptual Framework for Semantic Channel Finding in Complex Experimental Infrastructure

Modern experimental platforms such as particle accelerators, fusion devices, telescopes, and industrial process control systems expose tens to hundreds of thousands of control and diagnostic channels accumulated over decades of evolution. Operators and AI systems rely on informal expert knowledge, inconsistent naming conventions, and fragmented documentation to locate signals for monitoring, troubleshooting, and automated control, creating a persistent bottleneck for reliability, scalability, and language-model-driven interfaces. We formalize semantic channel finding-mapping natural-language intent to concrete control-system signals-as a general problem in complex experimental infrastructure, and introduce a four-paradigm framework to guide architecture selection across facility-specific data regimes. The paradigms span (i) direct in-context lookup over curated channel dictionaries, (ii) constrained hierarchical navigation through structured trees, (iii) interactive agent exploration using iterative reasoning and tool-based database queries, and (iv) ontology-grounded semantic search that decouples channel meaning from facility-specific naming conventions. We demonstrate each paradigm through proof-of-concept implementations at four operational facilities spanning two orders of magnitude in scale-from compact free-electron lasers to large synchrotron light sources-and diverse control-system architectures, from clean hierarchies to legacy environments. These implementations achieve 90-97% accuracy on expert-curated operational queries.

Magnetic properties and signatures of moment ordering in triangular lattice antiferromagnet KCeO$_2$

The magnetic ground state and the crystalline electric field level scheme of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet KCeO$_2$ are investigated. Below $T_N =$ 300 mK, KCeO$_2$ develops signatures of magnetic order in specific heat measurements and low energy inelastic neutron scattering data. Trivalent Ce$^{3+}$ ions in the $D_{3d}$ local environment of this compound exhibit large splittings among the lowest three $4f^1$ Kramers doublets defining for the free ion the $J = 5/2$ sextet and a ground state doublet with dipole character, consistent with recent theoretical predictions in M. S. Eldeeb et al. Phys. Rev. Materials 4, 124001 (2020). An unexplained, additional local mode appears, and potential origins of this anomalous mode are discussed.

Demonstration of a Tunable Antenna-Coupled Intersubband Terahertz (TACIT) Mixer

A fast, voltage-tunable terahertz mixer based on the intersubband transition of a high-mobility 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) has been fabricated from a single 40 nm GaAs-AlGaAs square quantum well heterostructure. The device is called a Tunable Antenna-Coupled Intersubband Terahertz (TACIT) mixer, and shows tunability of the detection frequency from 2.52 THz to 3.11 THz with small (< 1 V) top gate and back gate voltage biases. Mixing at 2.52 THz has been observed at 60 K with a -3dB intermediate frequency (IF) bandwidth exceeding 6 GHz.

Field-tunable quantum disordered ground state in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet NaYbO$_2$

Antiferromagnetically coupled S=1/2 spins on an isotropic triangular lattice is the paradigm of frustrated quantum magnetism, but structurally ideal realizations are rare. Here we investigate NaYbO$_2$, which hosts an ideal triangular lattice of $J_{eff}=1/2$ moments with no inherent site disorder. No signatures of conventional magnetic order appear down to 50 mK, strongly suggesting a quantum spin liquid ground state. We observe a two-peak specific heat and a nearly quadratic temperature dependence in accord with expectations for a two-dimensional Dirac spin liquid. Application of a magnetic field strongly perturbs the quantum disordered ground state and induces a clear transition into a collinear ordered state consistent with a long-predicted up-up-down structure for a triangular lattice XXZ Hamiltonian driven by quantum fluctuations. The observation of spin liquid signatures in zero field and quantum-induced ordering in intermediate fields in the same compound demonstrate an intrinsically quantum disordered ground state. We conclude that NaYbO$_2$ is a model, versatile platform for exploring spin liquid physics with full tunability of field and temperature.

Optical Frequency Combs from High-Order Sideband Generation

We report on the generation of frequency combs from the recently-discovered phenomenon of high-order sideband generation (HSG). A near-band gap continuous-wave (cw) laser with frequency $f_\text{NIR}$ was transmitted through an epitaxial layer containing GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells that were driven by quasi-cw in-plane electric fields $F_\text{THz}$ between 4 and 50 kV/cm oscillating at frequencies $f_\text{THz}$ between 240 and 640 GHz. Frequency combs with teeth at $f_\text{sideband}=f_\text{NIR}+nf_\text{THz}$ ($n$ even) were produced, with maximum reported $n>120$, corresponding to a maximum comb span $>80$ THz. Comb spectra with the identical product $f_\text{THz}\times F_\text{THz}$ were found to have similar spans and shapes in most cases, as expected from the picture of HSG as a scattering-limited electron-hole recollision phenomenon. The HSG combs were used to measure the frequency and linewidth of our THz source as a demonstration of potential applications.

Tunable Antenna Coupled Intersubband Terahertz Detector

We report on the development of a tunable antenna coupled intersubband terahertz (TACIT) detector based on GaAs/AlGaAs two dimensional electron gas. A successful device design and micro-fabrication process have been developed which maintain the high mobility (1.1x106 cm2/V-s at 10K) of a 2DEG channel in the presence of a highly conducting backgate. Gate voltage-controlled device resistance and direct THz sensing has been observed. The goal is to operate as a nearly quantum noise limited heterodyne sensor suitable for passively-cooled space platforms.
