Bubbling of almost critical points of anisotropic isoperimetric problems with degenerating ellipticity

Given a sequence of uniformly convex norms $ \phi_h $ on $ \mathbf{R}^{n+1} $ converging to an arbitrary norm $ \phi $, we prove rigidity of $ L^1 $-accumulation points of sequences of sets $ E_h \subseteq \mathbf{R}^{n+1} $ of finite perimeter, that are volume-constrained almost-critical points of the anisotropic surface energy functionals associated with $ \phi_h $. Here, almost criticality is measured in terms of the $ L^n $-deviation from being constant of the distributional anisotropic mean $ \phi_h $-curvature of (the varifold associated to) of the reduced boundaries of $ E_h $. We prove that such limits are finite union of disjoint, but possibly mutually tangent, $ \phi $-Wulff shapes.

Perpendicularity and Locality for Codimension-One Varifolds with Bounded Anisotropic Mean Curvature

Suppose $ F $ is an integrand associated with a uniformly convex $ \mathscr{C}^{3} $-norm, and $ V $ is a $ n $-dimensional varifold in an open subset of $ \mathbf{R}^{n+1} $ such that $ \mathscr{H}^n \llcorner \operatorname{spt} \| V \| $ is absolutely continuous with respect to $ \| V \| $ and the mean $ F $-curvature $ \mathbf{h}_{F}(V, \cdot) $ is bounded in $\mathbf{L}^\infty $. In our previous result arXiv:2507.18357 we prove that $ \operatorname{spt} \| V \| $ is $ \mathscr{C}^{2} $-rectifiable and the $ \mathscr{C}^{1} $-regular part $ M $ of $ \operatorname{spt} \| V \| $ coincides $ \mathscr{H}^n $ almost everywhere with the unit-density stratum of $ V $. In this paper we prove that $ \mathbf{h}_{F}(V,a) \in \operatorname{Nor}(M,a) $ for $ \mathscr{H}^n $ a.e.\ $ a \in M $ and that $ \mathbf{h}_{F}(V, \cdot) $ agrees with the approximate mean $ F $-curvature coming from the $ \mathscr{C}^{2} $-rectifiable covering of $ M $. These results provide anisotropic extensions of well known theorems in the Euclidean setting by Brakke, Sch\"atzle and Ambrosio-Masnou.

Quadratic flatness and Regularity for Codimension-One Varifolds with Bounded Anisotropic Mean Curvature

We prove that if $ V $ is a $ n $-dimensional varifold in an open subset of $ \mathbf{R}^{n+1} $ with bounded anisotropic mean curvature such that $ {\rm spt} \| V \| $ has locally finite $ \mathscr{H}^n $-measure, then $ {\rm spt} \| V \| $ can be touched by two mutually tangent balls at $ \mathscr{H}^n $ almost all points. In particular, this result implies that $ \mathscr{H}^n $ almost all of $ {\rm spt} \| V \| $ can be covered by the union of countably many $ C^2 $-regular $ n $-dimensional submanifolds of $ \mathbf{R}^{n+1} $. Moreover, combined with Allard's local anisotropic regularity theorem, it implies that if $ V $ is an integral varifold with bounded anisotropic mean curvature and if $ \mathscr{H}^n \llcorner {\rm spt} \| V \| $ is absolutely continuous with respect to $ \| V \| $, then $ {\rm spt} \| V \| $ is $ C^{1, \alpha} $-regular around $ \mathscr{H}^n $ almost every point of density $ 1 $.

Alexandrov sphere theorems for $ W^{2,n} $-hypersurfaces

In this paper we extend Alexandrov's sphere theorems for higher-order mean curvature functions to $ W^{2,n} $-regular hypersurfaces under a general degenerate elliptic condition. The proof is based on the extension of the Montiel-Ros argument to the aforementioned class of hypersurfaces and on the existence of suitable Legendrian cycles over them. Using the latter we can also prove that there are $ n $-dimensional Legendrian cycles with $ 2n $-dimensional support, hence answering a question by Rataj and Zaehle. Finally we provide a very general version of the umbilicality theorem for Sobolev-type hypersurfaces.

Finite total curvature and soap bubbles with almost constant higher-order mean curvature

Given $ n \geq 2 $ and $ k \in \{2, \ldots , n\} $, we study the asymptotic behaviour of sequences of bounded $C^2$-domains of finite total curvature in $ \mathbb{R}^{n+1} $ converging in volume and perimeter, and with the $ k $-th mean curvature functions converging in $ L^1 $ to a constant. Under natural mean convexity hypothesis, and assuming an $ L^\infty $-control on the mean curvature outside a set of vanishing area, we prove that finite unions of mutually tangent balls are the only possible limits. This is the first result where such a uniqueness is proved without assuming uniform bounds on the exterior or interior touching balls.

Rigidity and compactness with constant mean curvature in warped product manifolds

We prove the rigidity of rectifiable boundaries with constant distributional mean curvature in the Brendle class of warped product manifolds (which includes important models in General Relativity, like the deSitter--Schwarzschild and Reissner--Nordstrom manifolds). As a corollary we characterize limits of rectifiable boundaries whose mean curvatures converge, as distributions, to a constant. The latter result is new, and requires the full strength of distributional CMC-rigidity, even when one considers smooth boundaries whose mean curvature oscillations vanish in arbitrarily strong $C^k$-norms.

A Blake-Zisserman-Kirchhoff theory for plates with soft inclusions

We consider a two phase elastic thin film with soft inclusions subject to bending dominated deformations. The soft (void) phase may comprise asymptotically small droplets within the elastic matrix. We perform a dimension reduction analysis and obtain a novel `Blake-Zisserman-Kirchhoff' model that combines Kirchhoff's classical plate theory with Blake-Zisserman type surface energy contributions at cracks, folds and the boundary of voids.

Curvature measures and soap bubbles beyond convexity

Extending the celebrated results of Alexandrov (1958) and Korevaar-Ros (1988) for smooth sets, as well as the results of Schneider (1979) and the first author (1999) for arbitrary convex bodies, we obtain for the first time the characterization of the isoperimetric sets of a uniformly convex smooth finite-dimensional normed space (i.e. Wulff shapes) in the non-smooth and non-convex setting, based on the natural geometric condition involving the curvature measures. More specifically we show, under a natural mean-convexity assumption, that finite unions of disjoint Wulff shapes are the only sets of positive reach $ A \subseteq \mathbf{R}^{n+1} $ with finite and positive volume such that, for some $ k \in \{0, \ldots , n-1\}$, the $ k $-th generalized curvature measure $ \Theta^\phi_{k}(A, \cdot) $, which is defined on the unit normal bundle of $ A $ with respect to the relative geometry induced by $ \phi $, is proportional to $ \Theta^\phi_{n}(A, \cdot)$. If $ k = n-1 $ the conclusion holds for all sets of positive reach with finite and positive volume. We also prove a related sharp result about the removability of the singularities. This result is based on the extension of the notion of a normal boundary point, originally introduced by Busemann and Feller (1936) for arbitrary convex bodies, to sets of positive reach. These results are new even in the Euclidean space. Several auxiliary and related results are also proved, which are of independent interest. They include the extension of the classical Steiner--Weyl tube formula to arbitrary closed sets in a finite dimensional uniformly convex normed vector space and a general formula for the derivative of the localized volume function, which extends and complements recent results of Chambolle--Lussardi--Villa (2021).

Anisotropic curvature measures and uniqueness of convex bodies

We prove that an arbitrary convex body $C \subseteq \mathbf{R}^{n+1} $, whose $ k $-th anisotropic curvature measure (for $ k =0, \ldots , n-1 $) is a multiple constant of the anisotropic perimeter of C, must be a rescaled and translated Wulff shape. This result provides a generalization of a theorem of Schneider (1979) and resolves a conjecture of Andrews and Wei (2017).

Regularity of distance functions from arbitrary closed sets

We investigate the distance function $\boldsymbol{\delta}_{K}^{\phi}$ from an arbitrary closed subset $ K $ of a~finite-dimensional Banach space $ (\mathbf{R}^{n}, \phi) $, equipped with a uniformly convex $\mathcal{C}^{2}$-norm $ \phi $. These spaces are known as \emph{Minkowski spaces} and they are one of the fundamental spaces of Finslerian geometry (see https://doi.org/10.1016/S0723-0869(01)80025-6). We prove that the gradient of $\boldsymbol{\delta}_{K}^{\phi}$ satisfies a Lipschitz property on the complement of the $\phi$-cut-locus of $K$ (a.k.a. the medial axis of $\mathbf{R}^{n} \sim K$) and we prove a~structural result for the set of points outside $K$ where $\boldsymbol{\delta}_{K}^{\phi}$ is pointwise twice differentiable, providing an answer to a question raised by Hiriart-Urruty (see https://doi.org/10.2307/2321379). Our results give sharp generalisations of some classical results in the theory of distance functions and they are motivated by critical low-regularity examples for which the available results gives no meaningful or very restricted informations. The results of this paper find natural applications in the theory of partial differential equations and in convex geometry.

Two phase models for elastic membranes with soft inclusions

We derive an effective membrane theory in the thin film limit within a two phase material model for a specimen consisting of an elastic matrix and soft inclusions. The soft inclusions may lead to the formation of cracks within the elastic matrix and the corresponding limiting models are described by Griffith type fracture energy functionals. We also provide simplified proofs of relaxation results for bulk materials.

Distance functions with dense singular sets

We characterize the denseness of the singular set of the distance function from a $\mathcal{C}^1$-hypersurface in terms of an inner ball condition and we address the problem of the existence of viscosity solutions of the Eikonal equation whose singular set (i.e. set of non-differentiability points) is not no-where dense.

Uniqueness of singular convex hypersurfaces with lower bounded k-th mean curvature

We obtain a sharp characterization of the Euclidean ball among all convex bodies K whose boundary has a pointwise k-th mean curvature not smaller than a geometric constant at almost all normal points. This geometric constant depends only on the volume and the boundary area of K. We deduce this characterization from a new isoperimetric-type inequality for arbitrary convex bodies, for which the equality is achieved uniquely by balls. This second result is proved in a more general context of generalized mean-convex sets. Finally we positively answer a question left open in [FLW19] proving a further sharp characterization of the ball among all convex bodies that are of class $ \mathcal{C}^{1,1} outside a singular set, whose Hausdorff dimension is suitably bounded from above.

Second order rectifiability of varifolds of bounded mean curvature

We prove that the support of an $ m $ dimensional rectifiable varifold with a uniform lower bound on the density and bounded generalized mean curvature can be covered $ \mathscr{H}^{m} $ almost everywhere by a countable union of $m$ dimensional submanifolds of class $ \mathcal{C}^{2} $. We obtain this result using the notion of curvature of arbitrary closed sets originally developed in stochastic geometry and extending to our geometric setting techniques developed by Trudinger in the theory of viscosity solutions of PDE's.

The spherical image of singular varieties of bounded mean curvature

In this paper we deal with singular varieties of bounded mean curvature in the viscosity sense. They contain all varifolds of bounded generalized mean curvature. In the first part we investigate the second-order properties of these varieties, obtaining results that are new also in the varifold's setting. In particular we prove that the generalized normal bundle of these varieties satisfies a natural Lusin (N) condition, which allows to extend the classical Coarea formula for the Gauss map of smooth varieties, and to introduce for all integral varifolds of bounded mean curvature a natural definition of second fundamental form, whose trace equals the generalized varifold mean curvature. In the second part, we use this machinery to extend a sharp geometric inequality of Almgren to all compact varieties of bounded mean curvature in the viscosity sense and we characterize the equality case. As a consequence we formulate sufficient conditions to conclude that the area-blow-up set is empty for sequences of varifolds whose first variation is controlled.

ABP inequalities for singular submanifolds of bounded mean curvature

Employing a notion of curvature for arbitrary closed sets we prove an ABP-type estimate for a class of singular submanifolds of arbitrary codimension and bounded mean curvature recently introduced by B. White. A weak-Harnack-type estimate is then derived using the ABP estimate. These results generalize analogous results by O. Savin for viscosity solutions of the minimal surface equation.
