Causal Probabilistic Programming via Magmadic Do-Notation

We introduce a do-notation metalanguage for causal probabilistic programming. The metalanguage is based on magmads: non-associative monads. We derive causal probabilistic programming constructs from non-associativity and the primitives of probabilistic programming.

Graded Monad Coalgebras for Continuous-Time Transition Systems

Functor coalgebras capture a wide range of transition systems that must however evolve in discrete steps. We introduce graded coalgebras of graded monads and propose them to model continuous-time transition systems. We develop the theory of graded coalgebras-including graded distributive laws between graded monads-and we give conditions for the existence of terminal coalgebras. We define both branching-time and trace semantics, linking them to recent work on Feller-Dynkin processes. Finally, we develop coalgebraic modal logics for both process semantics and state criteria for invariance and expressivity.

Monoidal categories graded by partial commutative monoids

Effectful categories have two classes of morphisms: pure morphisms, which form a monoidal category; and effectful morphisms, which can only be combined monoidally with central morphisms (such as the pure ones), forming a premonoidal category. This suggests seeing morphisms of an effectful category as carrying a grade that combines under the monoidal product in a partially defined manner. We axiomatize this idea with the notion of monoidal category graded by a partial commutative monoid (PCM). Monoidal categories arise as the special case of grading by the singleton PCM, and effectful categories arise from grading by a two-element PCM. Further examples include grading by powerset PCMs, modelling non-interfering parallelism for programs accessing shared resources, and grading by intervals, modelling bounded resource usage. We show that effectful categories form a coreflective subcategory of PCM-graded monoidal categories; introduce cartesian structure, recovering Freyd categories; and describe PCM-graded monoidal categories as monoids by viewing a PCM as a thin promonoidal category.

Normalized Probabilistic Semantics is Not Associative

Normalization, $D(X + 1) \to D(X) + 1$, fails to form a distributive law, forcing the composition of normalized stochastic kernels to be non-associative. We introduce a first normalized-by-construction probabilistic semantics: the non-associative monad - the magmad - of normalized distributions. Non-associativity allows this semantics to express both observations and interventions, both Pearl's and Jeffrey's updates, and both evidential and causal interpretations. Within this framework, we derive causality results including Pearl's front-door and back-door criteria.

Order in Partial Markov Categories

Partial Markov categories are a recent framework for categorical probability theory that provide an abstract account of partial probabilistic computation with updating semantics. In this article, we discuss two order relations on the morphisms of a partial Markov category. In particular, we prove that every partial Markov category is canonically preorder-enriched, recovering several well-known order enrichments. We also demonstrate that the existence of codiagonal maps (comparators) is closely related to order properties of partial Markov categories. Finally, we introduce a synthetic version of the Cauchy--Schwarz inequality and, from it, we prove that updating increases validity.

Deriving Program Logics from Distributive Monoidal Categories

We derive multiple program logics - including correctness, incorrectness, and relational Hoare logic - from the axioms of imperative categories: uniformly traced distributive copy-discard categories. Rules of program logics follow from the axioms of imperative categories. The algebra of guarded commands derived by the categorical structure generalises guarded Kleene algebras with tests.

Resourceful Traces for Commuting Processes

We show that, when the actions of a Mazurkiewicz trace are considered not merely as atomic (i.e., mere names) but transformations from a specified type of inputs to a specified type of outputs, we obtain a novel notion of presentation for effectful categories (also known as generalised Freyd categories), a well-known algebraic structure in the semantics of side-effecting computation. Like the usual representation of traces as graphs, our notion of presentation gives rise to a graphical calculus for effectful categories. We use our presentations to give a construction of the commuting tensor product of free effectful categories, capturing the combination of systems in which the actions of each must commute with one another, while still permitting exchange of resources

Timing via Pinwheel Double Categories

We discuss string diagrams for timed process theories -- represented by duoidally-graded symmetric strict monoidal categories -- built upon the string diagrams of pinwheel double categories.

Partial Markov Categories

We introduce partial Markov categories as a synthetic framework for synthetic probabilistic inference, blending the work of Cho and Jacobs, Fritz, and Golubtsov on Markov categories with the work of Cockett and Lack on cartesian restriction categories. We describe observations, Bayes' theorem, normalisation, and both Pearl's and Jeffrey's updates in purely categorical terms.

Effectful Mealy Machines

Effectful Mealy machines, which we introduce, are a generalization of Mealy machines with global effects determined by an effectful triple. We provide semantics of effectful Mealy machines in terms of both bisimilarity and traces: bisimilarity is characterized syntactically, via uniform feedback; traces are constructed coinductively in terms of streams. We prove that this framework characterizes standard causal processes and existing flavours of Mealy machine, bisimilarity, and trace equivalence. In the commutative case, we introduce a monoidal generalization of Raney's causal functions: monoidal causal processes.

A Simple Formal Language for Probabilistic Decision Problems

Probabilistic puzzles can be confusing, partly because they are formulated in natural languages - full of unclarities and ambiguities - and partly because there is no widely accepted and intuitive formal language to express them. We propose a simple formal language with arrow notation ($\gets$) for sampling from a distribution and with observe statements for conditioning (updating, belief revision). We demonstrate the usefulness of this simple language by solving several famous puzzles from probabilistic decision theory. The operational semantics of our language is expressed via the (finite, discrete) subdistribution monad. Our broader message is that proper formalisation dispels confusion.

String Diagrams for Physical Duoidal Categories

We introduce string diagrams for physical duoidal categories (normal $\otimes$-symmetric duoidal categories): they consist of string diagrams with wires forming a zigzag-free partial order and order-preserving nodes whose inputs and outputs form intervals.

Context-Free Languages of String Diagrams

We introduce context-free languages of morphisms in monoidal categories, extending recent work on the categorification of context-free languages, and regular languages of string diagrams. Context-free languages of string diagrams include classical context-free languages of words, trees, and hypergraphs, when instantiated over appropriate monoidal categories. Using a contour-splicing adjunction, we prove a representation theorem for context-free languages of string diagrams: every such language arises as the image under a monoidal functor of a regular language of string diagrams.

Monoidal Context Theory

We universally characterize the produoidal category of monoidal lenses over a monoidal category. In the same way that each category induces a cofree promonoidal category of spliced arrows, each monoidal category induces a cofree produoidal category of monoidal spliced arrows; monoidal lenses are the free normalization of the cofree produoidal category of monoidal spliced arrows. We apply the characterization of symmetric monoidal lenses to the analysis of multi-party message-passing protocols. We introduce a minimalistic axiomatization of message passing -- message theories -- and we construct combinatorially the free message theory over a set. Symmetric monoidal lenses are the derivations of the free message theory over a symmetric monoidal category.

String Diagrams for Premonoidal Categories

Premonoidal categories are monoidal categories without the interchange law while effectful categories are premonoidal categories with a chosen monoidal subcategory of interchanging morphisms. In the same sense that string diagrams, pioneered by Joyal and Street, are an internal language for monoidal categories, we show that string diagrams with an added "runtime object", pioneered by Alan Jeffrey, are an internal language for effectful categories and can be used as string diagrams for effectful, premonoidal, and Freyd categories.

Optics for Premonoidal Categories

We further the theory of optics or "circuits-with-holes" to encompass premonoidal categories: monoidal categories without the interchange law. Every premonoidal category gives rise to an effectful category (i.e. a generalised Freyd-category) given by the embedding of the monoidal subcategory of central morphisms. We introduce "pro-effectful" categories and show that optics for premonoidal categories exhibit this structure. Pro-effectful categories are the non-representable versions of effectful categories, akin to the generalisation of monoidal to promonoidal categories. We extend a classical result of Day to this setting, showing an equivalence between pro-effectful structures on a category and effectful structures on its free tight cocompletion. We also demonstrate that pro-effectful categories are equivalent to prostrong promonads.

Collages of String Diagrams

We introduce collages of string diagrams as a diagrammatic syntax for glueing multiple monoidal categories. Collages of string diagrams are interpreted as pointed bimodular profunctors. As the main examples of this technique, we introduce string diagrams for bimodular categories, string diagrams for functor boxes, and string diagrams for internal diagrams.

Evidential Decision Theory via Partial Markov Categories

We introduce partial Markov categories. In the same way that Markov categories encode stochastic processes, partial Markov categories encode stochastic processes with constraints, observations and updates. In particular, we prove a synthetic Bayes theorem and we apply it to define a syntactic partial theory of observations on any Markov category, whose normalisations can be computed in the original Markov category. Finally, we formalise Evidential Decision Theory in terms of partial Markov categories, and provide implemented examples.
