Remark on the Novikov conjecture and the homotopy invariance of the Hirzebruch L-class

We use K-area homology to summarize some results about the Novikov conjecture and the Hirzebruch L-class. In fact, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for closed manifolds to have a homotopy invariant L-class. In order to obtain additional properties we also introduce the cohomology of infinite K--area which preserves the cup product of singular cohomology.

Relative K-area homology and applications

We show an Uhlenbeck type estimate for closed simply connected manifolds which provides the existence of certain exact sequences in K-area homology. This leads to the behavior of the K-area homology under surgery. Moreover, we give an index theoretic obstruction to positive scalar curvature on compact spin manifolds with boundary.

Scalar curvature and vector bundles

In the first part we use Gromov's K--area to define the K--area homology which stabilizes into singular homology on the category of pairs of compact smooth manifolds. The second part treats the questions of certain curvature gaps. For instance, the $L^\infty $--curvature gap of complex vector bundles on a compact manifold is positive if and only if the K--area homology coincides with the reduced singular homology in all even degrees. In the third part we give some upper bounds of the scalar curvature on compact manifolds. In particular, we generalize results by Llarull and Goette, Semmelmann.

Homology of finite K-area

We use Gromov's K--area to define a generalized homology theory on compact smooth manifolds. In fact, this theory collects obstructions to the enlargeability of the manifold and its nontrivial submanifolds. Moreover, using the K--area homology we can rephrase some classic results about positive scalar curvature.

Scalar Curvature on Compact Symmetric Spaces

A classic result by Gromov and Lawson states that a Riemannian metric of non--negative scalar curvature on the Torus must be flat. The analogous rigidity result for the standard sphere was shown by Llarull. Later Goette and Semmelmann generalized it to locally symmetric spaces of compact type and nontrivial Euler characteristic. In this paper we improve the results by Llarull and Goette, Semmelmann. In fact we show that if $(M,g_0)$ is a locally symmetric space of compact type with $\chi (M)\neq 0$ and $g$ is a Riemannian metric on $M$ with $\mathrm{scal}_g\cdot g\geq \mathrm{scal}_0\cdot g_0$, then $g$ is a constant multiple of $g_0$. The previous results by Llarull and Goette, Semmelmann always needed the two inequalities $g\geq g_0$ and $\mathrm{scal}_g\geq \mathrm{scal}_0$ in order to conclude $g=g_0$. Moreover, if $(S^{2m},g_0)$ is the standard sphere, we improve this result further and show that any metric $g$ on $S^{2m}$ of scalar curvature $\mathrm{scal}_g\geq (2m-1)\mathrm{tr}_g(g_0)$ is a constant multiple of $g_0$.

Conformally invariant Cotton and Bach tensor in N-dimensions

This paper presents conformal invariants for Riemannian manifolds of dimension greater than or equal to four whose vanishing is necessary for a Riemannian manifold to be conformally related to an Einstein space. One of the invariants is a modification of the Cotton tensor, the other is a $n$--dimensional version of the Bach tensor. In general both tensors are smooth only on an open and dense subset of $M$, but this subset is invariant under conformal transformations. Moreover, we generalize the main result of "Conformal Einstein Spaces in $N$--Dimensions" published in \emph{Ann. Global Anal. Geom.} {\bf 20}(2) (2001).

Scalar curvature rigidity of almost Hermitian manifolds which are asymptotic to $\mathbb{C}H^{2n}$

We show that an almost Hermitian manifold $(M,g)$ of real dimension $4n$ which is strongly asymptotic to $\mathbb{C}H^{2n}$ and satisfies a certain scalar curvature bound must be isometric to the complex hyperbolic space. Assuming Kähler instead of almost Hermitian this gives the already known rigidity result by H. Boualem and M. Herlich proved in \emph{Ann. Scuola Norm. Sup Pisa (Ser. V)}, vol. 1(2).

Scalar curvature rigidity of almost Hermitian spin manifolds which are asymptotically complex hyperbolic

This paper generalizes a rigidity result of complex hyperbolic spaces by M. Herzlich. We prove that an almost Hermitian spin manifold $(M,g)$ of real dimension $4n+2$ which is strongly asymptotic to $\hyp{\C}^{2n+1}$ and satisfies a certain scalar curvature bound must be isometric to the complex hyperbolic space. The fact that we do not assume $g$ to be Kähler reflects in the inequality for the scalar curvature.
