Electron gases in toroidal shells: mode coupling and state functions

Eigenvalues and wave functions describing free electron gases in toroidal shells are determined using a basis set expansion natural to the system geometry. Couplings between azimuthal and poloidal modes are found to be appreciable at lower values of ${m_ϕ}$, modifying single particle density distributions within the shells. Thermodynamic state functions are calculated and contrasted with those of a solid toroidal volume.

Wave functions for a toroidal quantum dot in the presence of an axially symmetric magnetic field: transition from ring to bulk states as a function of aspect ratio

A basis set expansion is employed to calculate spectra and eigenstates of charge carriers within a toroidal volume characterized by major radius $R$ and minor radius $a$ immersed in an azimuthally symmetric magnetic field. The angular variables appearing in the Schrodinger equation are eliminated by contour methods, yielding effective potentials that reduce computational time by a large factor. An approximation formula for the single particle spectrum is presented that allows efficient construction of the partition function necessary for rapid calculation of thermodynamic quantities. The heat capacity from as a function of torus aspect ratio and temperature is calculated. The transition from ring-type to bulk-type behavior of the heat capacity is presented.

A numerical study of the spectrum and eigenfunctions on a tubular arc

The Hamiltonian for a particle constrained to move on the surface of a curved nanotube is derived using the methods of differential forms. A two-dimensional Gram-Schmidt orthonormalization procedure is employed to calculate basis functions for determining the eigenvalues and eigenstates of a tubular arc (a nanotube in the shape of a hyperbolic cosine) with several hundred scattering centers. The curvature of the tube is shown to induce bound states that are dependent on the curvature parameters and bend location of the tube.

Guided random walk calculation of energies and $<\sq {r^2} >$ values of the $^1Σ_g$ state of H_2 in a magnetic field

Energies and spatial observables for the $^1Σ_g$ state of the hydrogen molecule in magnetic fields parallel to the proton-proton axis are calculated with a guided random walk Feynman-Kac algorithm. We demonstrate that the accuracy of the results and the simplicity of the method may prove it a viable alternative to large basis set expansions for small molecules in applied fields.
