Dynamical metric order

We introduce the notion of dynamical metric order of a continuous map on a compact metric space, study its basic properties, and compute it for several classes of maps. This concept which is a counterpart of the metric mean dimension with the role of the box-counting dimension being played by the metric order. It is devised for maps acting on spaces with infinite box-counting dimension but finite metric order. For example, it brings forward new information about full shifts whose alphabets have infinite box-counting dimension; and provides a sharper estimate of complexity for the induced map determined by a continuous transformation on a compact metric space, whose upper metric mean dimension is known to admit only two values (zero or infinity). We also show that it satisfies a variational principle where maximization is taken over the space of invariant probability measures and whose equilibrium states always exist.

On quantization and the classical variational principle for the metric mean dimension

This paper investigates the relationship between quantization of measures and metric mean dimension of topological dynamical systems. We introduce the concept of mean quantization dimension for invariant probability measures and establish a classical variational principle: the metric mean dimension of a dynamical system is equal to the maximum mean quantization dimension among all invariant measures. This approach effectively characterizes the complexity of systems with infinite entropy by identifying a measure that captures information across all scales; and yields a fundamental property that allows for the exchange of limits and suprema in the Lindenstrauss-Tsukamoto variational principles, a feat that most known entropy-like maps fail to achieve due to convexity. Nevertheless, we show that the Katok and Shapira entropies do satisfy this property and, therefore, a classical variational principle for the metric mean dimension, for which maximizing measures always exist.

The impact of modeling approaches on controlling safety-critical, highly perturbed systems: the case for data-driven models

This paper evaluates the impact of three system models on the reference trajectory tracking error of the LQR optimal controller, in the challenging problem of guidance and control of the state of a system under strong perturbations and reconfiguration. We compared a smooth Linear Time Variant system learned from data (DD-LTV) with state of the art Linear Time Variant (LTV) system identification methods, showing its superiority in the task of state propagation. Moreover, we have found that DD-LTV allows for better performance in terms of trajectory tracking error than the standard solutions of a Linear Time Invariant (LTI) system model, and comparable performance to a linearized Linear Time Variant (L-LTV) system model. We tested the three approaches on the perturbed and time varying spring-mass-damper systems.

On sufficient conditions for the transitivity of homeomorphisms

We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for a homeomorphism with the shadowing property to be topologically transitive: to have an invariant subset $A$, dense in the non-wandering set, where the barycenter property holds. To elucidate its dynamical nature, we compare this condition with other properties known to be sufficient for an Anosov diffeomorphism to be topologically transitive. We also describe the $C^1$ interior of the set of diffeomorphisms which comply with this condition, discuss examples with a variety of dynamics and present some applications of interest.

Shift operators and their classification

We introduce a class of linear bounded invertible operators on Banach spaces, called shift operators, which comprises weighted backward shifts and models finite products of weighted backward shifts and dissipative composition operators. We classify vast families of these shift operators, including the ones generated by orthogonal, diagonalizable, rotation or hyperbolic matrices. and this classification yields verifiable conditions which we use to construct concrete examples of shift operators with a variety of dynamical properties. As a consequence, we show that, for large classes of shift operators, generalized hyperbolicity is equivalent to the shadowing property.

Metric mean dimension, H\"older regularity and Assouad spectrum

Metric mean dimension is a geometric invariant of dynamical systems with infinite topological entropy. We relate this concept with the fractal structure of the phase space and the H\"older regularity of the map. Afterwards we improve our general estimates in a family of interval maps by computing the metric mean dimension in a way similar to the Misiurewicz formula for the entropy, which in particular shows that our bounds are sharp. As an application, we determine the metric mean dimension of the classical Weierstrass functions. Of independent interest, we develop a dynamical analogue of the Minkowski-Bouligand dimension for subshifts on Ahlfors regular alphabets, which also provides an entropy formula in terms of the size of the set of admissible words, generalizing the classical result for subshifts on finite alphabets.

On the completely irregular set for systems with the shadowing property

We prove that the completely irregular set is Baire generic for every non-uniquely ergodic transitive continuous map which satisfies the shadowing property and acts on a compact metric space without isolated points. We also show that, under the previous assumptions, the orbit of any completely irregular point is dense. Afterwards, we analyze the connection between transitivity and the shadowing property, draw a few consequences of their joint action within the family of expansive homeomorphisms, and discuss several examples to test the scope of our results.

Topological and metric emergence of continuous maps

We prove that the homeomorphisms of a compact manifold with dimension one have zero topological emergence, whereas in dimension greater than one the topological emergence of a C^0-generic conservative homeomorphism is maximal, equal to the dimension of the manifold. Moreover, we show that the metric emergence of continuous self-maps on compact metric spaces has the intermediate value property.

COSMIC: fast closed-form identification from large-scale data for LTV systems

We introduce a closed-form method for identification of discrete-time linear time-variant systems from data, formulating the learning problem as a regularized least squares problem where the regularizer favors smooth solutions within a trajectory. We develop a closed-form algorithm with guarantees of optimality and with a complexity that increases linearly with the number of instants considered per trajectory. The COSMIC algorithm achieves the desired result even in the presence of large volumes of data. Our method solved the problem using two orders of magnitude less computational power than a general purpose convex solver and was about 3 times faster than a Stochastic Block Coordinate Descent especially designed method. Computational times of our method remained in the order of magnitude of the second even for 10k and 100k time instants, where the general purpose solver crashed. To prove its applicability to real world systems, we test with spring-mass-damper system and use the estimated model to find the optimal control path. Our algorithm was applied to both a Low Fidelity and Functional Engineering Simulators for the Comet Interceptor mission, that requires precise pointing of the on-board cameras in a fast dynamics environment. Thus, this paper provides a fast alternative to classical system identification techniques for linear time-variant systems, while proving to be a solid base for applications in the Space industry and a step forward to the incorporation of algorithms that leverage data in such a safety-critical environment.

Deep Aesthetic Assessment and Retrieval of Breast Cancer Treatment Outcomes

Treatments for breast cancer have continued to evolve and improve in recent years, resulting in a substantial increase in survival rates, with approximately 80\% of patients having a 10-year survival period. Given the serious impact that breast cancer treatments can have on a patient's body image, consequently affecting her self-confidence and sexual and intimate relationships, it is paramount to ensure that women receive the treatment that optimizes both survival and aesthetic outcomes. Currently, there is no gold standard for evaluating the aesthetic outcome of breast cancer treatment. In addition, there is no standard way to show patients the potential outcome of surgery. The presentation of similar cases from the past would be extremely important to manage women's expectations of the possible outcome. In this work, we propose a deep neural network to perform the aesthetic evaluation. As a proof-of-concept, we focus on a binary aesthetic evaluation. Besides its use for classification, this deep neural network can also be used to find the most similar past cases by searching for nearest neighbours in the highly semantic space before classification. We performed the experiments on a dataset consisting of 143 photos of women after conservative treatment for breast cancer. The results for accuracy and balanced accuracy showed the superior performance of our proposed model compared to the state of the art in aesthetic evaluation of breast cancer treatments. In addition, the model showed a good ability to retrieve similar previous cases, with the retrieved cases having the same or adjacent class (in the 4-class setting) and having similar types of asymmetry. Finally, a qualitative interpretability assessment was also performed to analyse the robustness and trustworthiness of the model.

A convex analysis approach to entropy functions, variational principles and equilibrium states

The first aims of this work are to endorse the advent of finitely additive set functions as equilibrium states and the possibility to replace the metric entropy by an upper semi-continuous map associated to a general variational principle. More precisely, using methods from Convex Analysis, we construct for each generalized convex pressure function an upper semi-continuous entropy-like map (which, in the context of continuous transformations acting on a compact metric space and the topological pressure, turns out to be the upper semi-continuous envelope of the Kolmogorov-Sinai metric entropy), then establish a new abstract variational principle and prove that equilibrium states, possibly finitely additive, always exist. This conceptual approach provides a new insight on dynamical systems without a measure with maximal entropy, prompts the study of finitely additive ground states for non-uniformly hyperbolic maps and grants the existence of finitely additive Lyapunov equilibrium states for singular value potentials generated by linear cocycles over continuous maps. We further investigate several applications, including a new thermodynamic formalism for systems driven by finitely generated semigroup or countable sofic group actions. On the final pages of the manuscript we provide a list of open problems in a wide range of topics suggested by our main results.

Genericity of historic behavior for maps and flows

We establish a sufficient condition for a continuous map, acting on a compact metric space, to have a Baire residual set of points exhibiting historic behavior (also known as irregular points). This criterion applies, for instance, to a minimal and non-uniquely ergodic map; to maps preserving two distinct probability measures with full support; to non-trivial homoclinic classes; to some non-uniformly expanding maps; and to partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with two periodic points whose stable manifolds are dense, including Mañé and Shub examples of robustly transitive diffeomorphisms. This way, our unifying approach recovers a collection of known deep theorems on the genericity of the irregular set, for both additive and sub-additive potentials, and also provides a number of new applications.

Smart fingertip sensor for food quality control: fruit maturity assessment with a magnetic device

Automated technologies for quality inspection of fruits have attracted great interest in the food industry. The development of nondestructive mechanisms to assess the quality of individual fruit prior to sale may lead to an increase in overall product quality, value, and consequently, producer competitiveness. However, the existing methods have limitations. Herein, a texture sensor based on highly sensitive hair-like cilia receptors, to allow a quick quality evaluation of fruit is proposed. The texture sensor consists of up to 100 magnetized nanocomposite cilia attached to a chip with magnetoresistive sensors in a full Wheatstone bridge architecture. In this paper we demonstrate the use of ciliary sensors in scanning fruits (blueberries and strawberries) in different maturation stages. The contact of the cilia with the fruit skin provided qualitative information about its texture in terms of ripeness stage. Less mature fruits exhibited, on average, a highest peak voltage of 0.14 mV for blueberries and 0.12 mV for strawberries, while overripe fruits exhibited 0.58 mV and 0.56 mV, respectively. The results were confirmed by sensorial assessment of the fruit freshness, and therefore attesting the application potential of the sensing technology for fruit quality control.

The role of the saddle-foci on the structure of a Bykov attracting set

We consider a one-parameter family $(f_λ)_{λ\, \geqslant \, 0}$ of symmetric vector fields on the three-dimensional sphere $\mathbb{S}^3\subset\mathbb{R}^4$ whose flows exhibit a heteroclinic network between two saddle-foci inside a global attracting set. More precisely, when $λ= 0$, there is an attracting heteroclinic cycle between the two equilibria which is made of two $1$-dimensional connections together with a $2$-dimensional sphere which is both the stable manifold of one saddle-focus and the unstable manifold of the other. After slightly increasing the parameter while keeping the $1$-dimensional connections unaltered, the two-dimensional invariant manifolds of the equilibria become transversal, and thereby create homoclinic and heteroclinic tangles. It is known that these newborn structures are the source of a countable union of topological horseshoes, which prompt the coexistence of infinitely many sinks and saddle-type invariant sets for many values of $λ$. We show that, for every small enough positive parameter $λ$, the stable and unstable manifolds of the equilibria and those infinitely many horseshoes are contained in the global attracting set of $f_λ$. Moreover, we prove that the horseshoes belong to the heteroclinic class of the equilibria. In addition, we verify that the set of chain-accessible points from either of the saddle-foci is chain-stable and contains the closure of the invariant manifolds of the two equilibria.

Generic homeomorphisms have full metric mean dimension

We prove that the upper metric mean dimension of $C^0$-generic homeomorphisms, acting on a compact smooth boundaryless manifold with dimension greater than one, coincides with the dimension of the manifold. In the case of continuous interval maps we also show that each level set for the metric mean dimension is $C^0$-dense in the space of continuous endomorphisms of $[0,1]$ with the uniform topology.

Periodic points and measures for a class of skew products

We consider the open set constructed by M. Shub in [42] of partially hyperbolic skew products on the space $\mathbb{T}^2\times \mathbb{T}^2$ whose non-wandering set is not stable. We show that there exists an open set $\mathcal{U}$ of such diffeomorphisms such that if $F_S\in \mathcal{U}$ then its measure of maximal entropy is unique, hyperbolic and, generically, describes the distribution of periodic points. Moreover, the non-wandering set of such an $F_S\in \mathcal{U}$ contains closed invariant subsets carrying entropy arbitrarily close to the topological entropy of $F_S$ and within which the dynamics is conjugate to a subshift of finite type. Under an additional assumption on the base dynamics, we verify that $F_S$ preserves a unique SRB measure, which is physical, whose basin has full Lebesgue measure and coincides with the measure of maximal entropy. We also prove that there exists a residual subset $\mathcal{R}$ of $\mathcal{U}$ such that if $F_S\in \mathcal{R}$ then the topological and periodic entropies of $F_S$ are equal, $F_S$ is asymptotic per-expansive, has a sub-exponential growth rate of the periodic orbits and admits a principal strongly faithful symbolic extension with embedding.

Moduli of stability for heteroclinic cycles of periodic solutions

We consider $C^2$ vector fields in the three dimensional sphere with an attracting heteroclinic cycle between two periodic hyperbolic solutions with real Floquet multipliers. The proper basin of this attracting set exhibits historic behavior and from the asymptotic properties of its orbits we obtain a complete set of invariants under topological conjugacy in a neighborhood of the cycle. As expected, this set contains the periods of the orbits involved in the cycle, a combination of their angular speeds, the rates of expansion and contraction in linearizing neighborhoods of them, besides information regarding the transition maps and the transition times between these neighborhoods. We conclude with an application of this result to a class of cycles obtained by the lifting of an example of R. Bowen.

A formula for the local metric pressure

In this note we present a formula for the local metric pressure that generalizes Brin-Katok result for the metric entropy. As an application, we give a straightforward proof of the fact that non-atomic weak-Gibbs invariant probability measures are equilibrium states.
