Identification of forward models: a nonparametric approach

In this paper we propose a new kernel-based method for the identification of the impulse responses of forward models. The resulting estimator leads to a nonlinear Tikhonov regularization problem for which we prove the existence of a solution. The latter result makes legitimate to approximate the forward model through a high-order Moving Average with eXogenous input (MAX) model, i.e. the numerical solution found using this model introduces only a negligible bias in the estimate. The optimization of the marginal likelihood to estimate the kernel hyperparameters is also taken into account. Since there does not exist a closed-form expression for the marginal likelihood, we present an evaluation method that relies on the Laplace approximation of the marginal likelihood. Finally, some numerical experiments are discussed to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Reconstructing Quantum States and Expectations via Dynamical Tomography

When the dynamics of a quantum system of interest is known, an informationally-complete set of observables is not needed for state reconstruction via tomographic techniques: letting the system evolve before performing the measurement allows one to effectively extend the available ways to probe the system. This idea leads to dynamical quantum tomography, whose feasibility we characterize for general quantum dynamics using Krylov-based methods. Specializing to Markovian ones, we also provide deterministic tests, and randomized ones to effectively assess parametric dynamics. The limits of the methods are explored comparing unitary and open dynamics when a single observable is available, and the set of observables whose expectation can be reconstructed from the available ones characterized. The framework is illustrated with applications to a spin chain (with or without dissipation) and an electron-nuclear system

Finding Conditions for Target Controllability under Christmas Trees

This paper presents new graph-theoretic conditions for structural target controllability of directed networks. After reviewing existing conditions and highlighting some gaps in the literature, we introduce a new class of network systems, named Christmas trees, which generalizes trees and cacti. We then establish a graph-theoretic characterization of sets of nodes that are structurally target controllable for a simple subclass of Christmas trees. Our characterization applies to general network systems by considering spanning subgraphs of Christmas tree class and allows us to uncover target controllable sets that existing criteria fail to identify.

Obtaining Structural Network Controllability with Higher-Order Local Dynamics

We consider a network of identical, first-order linear systems, and investigate how replacing a subset of the systems composing the network with higher-order ones, either taken to be generic or specifically designed, may affect its controllability. After establishing a correspondence between state controllability in networks of first-order systems with output controllability in networks of higher-order systems, we show that adding higher-order dynamics may require significantly fewer subsystem modifications to achieve structural controllability, when compared to first-order heterogeneous subsystems. Furthermore, we characterize the topology of networks (which we call X-networks) in which the introduction of heterogeneous local dynamics is not necessary for structural output controllability, as the latter can be attained by suitable higher-order subsystems with homogeneous internal dynamics.

Reconstructing Quantum States from Local Observation: A Dynamical Viewpoint

We analyze the problem of reconstructing an unknown quantum state of a multipartite system from repeated measurements of local observables. In particular, via a system-theoretic observability analysis, we show that, even when the initial state is not uniquely determined for a static system, this can be reconstructed if we leverage the system's dynamics. The choice of dynamical generators and the effect of finite samples is discussed, along with an illustrative example.

A kernel-based PEM estimator for forward models

This paper addresses the problem of learning the impulse responses characterizing forward models by means of a regularized kernel-based Prediction Error Method (PEM). The common approach to accomplish that is to approximate the system with a high-order stable ARX model. However, such choice induces a certain undesired prior information in the system that we want to estimate. To overcome this issue, we propose a new kernel-based paradigm which is formulated directly in terms of the impulse responses of the forward model and leading to the identification of a high-order MAX model. The most challenging step is the estimation of the kernel hyperparameters optimizing the marginal likelihood. The latter, indeed, does not admit a closed form expression. We propose a method for evaluating the marginal likelihood which makes possible the hyperparameters estimation. Finally, some numerical results showing the effectiveness of the method are presented.
