Counting sets with given doubling via dimension

We determine, up to a factor of $2^{o(k)}$, the number of $k$-sets $A \subset \{1, \ldots, n\}$ such that $|A + A| \leq m$, where $k = Θ(\log n)$ and $m \leq k^{1 + α}$, for small $α> 0$, answering a question of Green and Morris.

A new lower bound for two-color van der Waerden numbers

The van der Waerden number $w(k)$ is the smallest positive integer $N$ such that every two-coloring of $\{1,2,\ldots,N\}$ contains a monochromatic $k$-term arithmetic progression. We prove that $w(k) \geq (1-o(1))k2^{k-1}$ holds for all positive integers $k$. This verifies a conjecture of Erdős. In 1968, Berlekamp proved the same result when $k-1$ is prime. The coloring for general $k$ can be viewed as a product of Berlekamp's colorings for various primes. It was found by ChatGPT 5.6 Sol Pro.

Upper bounds for multicolour Ramsey numbers

The $r$-colour Ramsey number $R_r(k)$ is the minimum $n \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every $r$-colouring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ on $n$ vertices contains a monochromatic copy of $K_k$. We prove, for each fixed $r \geqslant 2$, that $$R_r(k) \leqslant e^{-δk} r^{rk}$$ for some constant $δ= δ(r) > 0$ and all sufficiently large $k \in \mathbb{N}$. For each $r \geqslant 3$, this is the first exponential improvement over the upper bound of Erdős and Szekeres from 1935. In the case $r = 2$, it gives a different (and significantly shorter) proof of a recent result of Campos, Griffiths, Morris and Sahasrabudhe.

An update on multicolor Ramsey lower bounds

Building upon previous works by Conlon-Ferber and Wigderson, Sawin showed a few years ago that upper bounds on the minimum density of independent sets in a $K_t$-free $G$ can be used to provide lower bounds for multicolor Ramsey numbers. In this note, we observe how a further improved upper bound on this parameter directly follows from a recent spherical random geometric graph construction of Ma-Shen-Xie. As a consequence, we derive a small exponential improvement over the best known lower bounds for multicolor Ramsey numbers.

An exponential upper bound for induced Ramsey numbers

The induced Ramsey number $R_{\mathrm{ind}}(H; r)$ of a graph $H$ is the minimum number $N$ such that there exists a graph with $N$ vertices for which all $r$-colourings of its edges contain a monochromatic induced copy of $H$. Our main result is the existence of a constant $C > 0$ such that, for every graph $H$ on $k$ vertices, these numbers satisfy \begin{equation*} R_{\mathrm{ind}}(H; r) \le r^{C r k}. \end{equation*} When $r = 2$, this resolves a conjecture of Erdős from 1975. For $r > 2$, it answers a question of Conlon, Fox and Sudakov in a strong form.

An exponential improvement for diagonal Ramsey

The Ramsey number $R(k)$ is the minimum $n \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every red-blue colouring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ on $n$ vertices contains a monochromatic copy of $K_k$. We prove that \[ R(k) \leqslant (4 - \varepsilon)^k \] for some constant $\varepsilon > 0$. This is the first exponential improvement over the upper bound of Erdős and Szekeres, proved in 1935.

A new lower bound for the Ramsey numbers $R(3,k)$

We prove a new lower bound for the off-diagonal Ramsey numbers, \[ R(3,k) \geq \bigg( \frac{1}{3}+ o(1) \bigg) \frac{k^2}{\log k }\, , \] thereby narrowing the gap between the upper and lower bounds to a factor of $3+o(1)$. This improves the best known lower bound of $(1/4+o(1))k^2/\log k$ due, independently, to Bohman and Keevash, and Fiz Pontiveros, Griffiths and Morris, resulting from their celebrated analysis of the triangle-free process. As a consequence, we disprove a conjecture of Fiz Pontiveros, Griffiths and Morris that the constant $1/4$ is sharp.

On the independence number of sparser random Cayley graphs

The Cayley sum graph $Γ_A$ of a set $A \subseteq \mathbb{Z}_n$ is defined to have vertex set $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and an edge between two distinct vertices $x, y \in \mathbb{Z}_n$ if $x + y \in A$. Green and Morris proved that if the set $A$ is a $p$-random subset of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ with $p = 1/2$, then the independence number of $Γ_A$ is asymptotically equal to $α(G(n, 1/2))$ with high probability. Our main theorem is the first extension of their result to $p = o(1)$: we show that, with high probability, $$α(Γ_A) = (1 + o(1)) α(G(n, p))$$ as long as $p \ge (\log n)^{-1/80}$. One of the tools in our proof is a geometric-flavoured theorem that generalises Freĭman's lemma, the classical lower bound on the size of high dimensional sumsets. We also give a short proof of this result up to a constant factor; this version yields a much simpler proof of our main theorem at the expense of a worse constant.

Towards an optimal hypergraph container lemma

The hypergraph container lemma is a powerful tool in probabilistic combinatorics that has found many applications since it was first proved a decade ago. Roughly speaking, it asserts that the family of independent sets of every uniform hypergraph can be covered by a small number of almost-independent sets, called containers. In this article, we formulate and prove two new versions of the lemma that display the following three attractive features. First, they both admit short and simple proofs that have surprising connections to other well-studied topics in probabilistic combinatorics. Second, they use alternative notions of almost-independence in order to describe the containers. Third, they yield improved dependence of the number of containers on the uniformity of the hypergraph, hitting a natural barrier for second-moment-type approaches.

A new lower bound for sphere packing

We show there exists a packing of identical spheres in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with density at least \[ (1-o(1))\frac{d \log d}{2^{d+1}}\, , \] as $d\to\infty$. This improves upon previous bounds for general $d$ by a factor of order $\log d$ and is the first asymptotically growing improvement to Rogers' bound from 1947.

Counting orientations of random graphs with no directed k-cycles

For every $k \geq 3$, we determine the order of growth, up to polylogarithmic factors, of the number of orientations of the binomial random graph containing no directed cycle of length $k$. This solves a conjecture of Kohayakawa, Morris and the last two authors.

The least singular value of a random symmetric matrix

Let $A$ be a $n \times n$ symmetric matrix with $(A_{i,j})_{i\leq j} $, independent and identically distributed according to a subgaussian distribution. We show that $$\mathbb{P}(σ_{\min}(A) \leq \varepsilon/\sqrt{n}) \leq C \varepsilon + e^{-cn},$$ where $σ_{\min}(A)$ denotes the least singular value of $A$ and the constants $C,c>0 $ depend only on the distribution of the entries of $A$. This result confirms a folklore conjecture on the lower-tail asymptotics of the least singular value of random symmetric matrices and is best possible up to the dependence of the constants on the distribution of $A_{i,j}$. Along the way, we prove that the probability $A$ has a repeated eigenvalue is $e^{-Ω(n)}$, thus confirming a conjecture of Nguyen, Tao and Vu.

The typical approximate structure of sets with bounded sumset

Let $A_1$ and $A_2$ be randomly chosen subsets of the first $n$ integers of cardinalities $s_2\geq s_1 = Ω(s_2)$, such that their sumset $A_1+A_2$ has size $m$. We show that asymptotically almost surely $A_1$ and $A_2$ are almost fully contained in arithmetic progressions $P_1$ and $P_2$ with the same common difference and cardinalities approximately $s_i m/(s_1+s_2)$. We also prove a counting theorem for such pairs of sets in arbitrary abelian groups. The results hold for $s_i = ω(\log^3 n)$ and $s_1+s_2 \leq m = o(s_2/\log^3 n)$. Our main tool is an asymmetric version of the method of hypergraph containers which was recently used by Campos to prove similar results in the special case $A=B$.

Towards Hadwiger's conjecture via Bourgain Slicing

In 1957, Hadwiger conjectured that every convex body in $\mathbb{R}^d$ can be covered by $2^d$ translates of its interior. For over 60 years, the best known bound was of the form $O(4^d \sqrt{d} \log d)$, but this was recently improved by a factor of $e^{Ω(\sqrt{d})}$ by Huang, Slomka, Tkocz and Vritsiou. In this note we take another step towards Hadwiger's conjecture by deducing an almost-exponential improvement from the recent breakthrough work of Chen, Klartag and Lehec on Bourgain's slicing problem. More precisely, we prove that, for any convex body $K \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $$\exp\bigg( - Ω\bigg( \frac{d}{(\log d)^8} \bigg) \bigg) \cdot 4^d$$ translates of $\text{int}(K)$ suffice to cover $K$. We also show that a positive answer to Bourgain's slicing problem would imply an exponential improvement for Hadwiger's conjecture.

Singularity of random symmetric matrices revisited

Let $M_n$ be drawn uniformly from all $\pm 1$ symmetric $n \times n$ matrices. We show that the probability that $M_n$ is singular is at most $\exp(-c(n\log n)^{1/2})$, which represents a natural barrier in recent approaches to this problem. In addition to improving on the best-known previous bound of Campos, Mattos, Morris and Morrison of $\exp(-c n^{1/2})$ on the singularity probability, our method is different and considerably simpler.

On the singularity of random symmetric matrices

A well-known conjecture states that a random symmetric $n \times n$ matrix with entries in $\{-1,1\}$ is singular with probability $Θ\big( n^2 2^{-n} \big)$. In this paper we prove that the probability of this event is at most $\exp\big( - Ω( \sqrt{n} ) \big)$, improving the best known bound of $\exp\big( - Ω( n^{1/4} \sqrt{\log n} ) \big)$, which was obtained recently by Ferber and Jain. The main new ingredient is an inverse Littlewood-Offord theorem in $\mathbb{Z}_p^n$ that applies under very mild conditions, whose statement is inspired by the method of hypergraph containers.
