Dispersive description of the $K \to \pi \ell^+ \ell^-$ radiative amplitudes

We propose a description of the $K^+$, $K_S$ radiative decay form factors $W_+$, $W_S$ based on general properties of analyticity and unitarity. Starting from the simple consideration of the asymptotic behaviour of the two combinations $2W_+-W_S$ and $W_+ +W_S$ we derive a dispersive representation involving only two parameters. Using the rich experimental information on the $K\to3\pi$ amplitudes, extended beyond the low energy region using the Khuri-Treiman formalism, we show that the sign of the $W_+$ form factor is unambiguously determined and its energy dependence can be well reproduced. We also show that the yet unknown $\Delta{I}=1/2$ part of the $K_S \to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ can be determined from the value of $W_+(0)+W_S(0)$. The possibility of fixing the sign of $W_S$ from experiment is discussed.

A dispersive approach to the CP conserving $K\to\pi\ell^+\ell^-$ radiative decays

We reconsider the constraints on the form factors $W_+ (s)$ and $W_S (s)$, describing the radiative decay modes $K^+\to\pi^+ \ell^+\ell^-$ and $K_S\to\pi^0 \ell^+\ell^-$, associated with the general properties of analyticity and unitarity. Starting from the simple consideration of the asymptotic behaviours of the two combinations $2 W_+ (s) - W_S (s)$ and $W_+ (s) + W_S (s)$, we derive a minimal pair of dispersive representations which involves only two free parameters. An important input for these representations consists of the $K\to3\pi$ decay amplitudes, for which we use a set of solutions of the Khuri-Treiman equations obtained recently. These solutions provide an extrapolation from the physical $K\to3\pi$ decay region up to the resonant $K\pi\to\pi\pi$ scattering regions. We show that the experimental energy dependence of $|W_+|^2$ can be well reproduced and that the sign of $W_+$ is unambiguously determined. We also show that the yet unknown $\Delta{I}=1/2$ part of the $K_S\to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0$ amplitude can be determined from the value of $W_+(0) + W_S(0)$. The possibility of fixing the sign of $W_S(0)$ using experimental data on both $|W_+|^2$ and $|W_S|^2$ is discussed.

On the contribution from the light quarks to $H\to\gamma\gamma , \gamma Z$

This Letter addresses the contribution from the light $u , d , s$ quarks to the amplitudes for the decay modes of the Brout-Englert-Higgs scalar boson $H$ into two photons ($H\to\gamma\gamma$) or to a photon and a neutral weak gauge boson ($H\to\gamma Z$), taking into account the non-perturbative aspects of QCD. Contrary to a recent claim, the contribution from the light quarks does not vanish. Rather, it is shown that, in contrast to the perturbative evaluations usually considered in the literature, this contribution to the amplitudes starts with a term that is linear, and not quadratic, in the masses of the light quarks, thus pointing toward a sizeable enhancement of their contribution to $H \to \gamma \gamma$.

Predictions for the rare kaon decays $K_{S,L} \to \pi^0 \ell^+ \ell^-$ from QCD in the limit of a large number of colours

The long-distance and non-local parts of the form factors describing the single-photon mediated $K_{S,L}\to\pi^0\gamma^*\to\pi^0\ell^+\ell^-$ ($\ell = e, \mu$) transitions in the standard model are addressed in QCD in the limit where the number $N_c$ of colours becomes infinite. It is shown that this provides a suitable theoretical framework to study these decay modes and that it allows to predict the decay rates for $K_{S}\to\pi^0\ell^+\ell^-$. It also unambiguously predicts that the interference between the direct and indirect CP-violating contributions to the decay rate for $K_L\to\pi^0 \ell^+ \ell^-$ is constructive.

A dispersive study of final-state interactions in $K\to\pi\pi\pi$ amplitudes

A system of dispersive representations of the Omn\`es-Khuri-Treiman-Sawyer-Wali type for the final-state interactions in the amplitudes of the $K\to\pi\pi\pi$ weak transitions is constructed, under the assumptions that CP and isospin symmetries are conserved. Both the $\Delta I = 1/2$ and $\Delta I = 3/2$ transition channels are considered. The set of single-variable functions involved in these representations is identified, and the polynomial ambiguities in their definitions are discussed. Numerical solutions for the system of coupled integral relations satisfied by these functions are provided, and the determination of the subtraction constants in terms of the experimental information on the amplitudes in the decay region is addressed.

Holographic models of composite Higgs in the Veneziano limit. Part II. Fermionic sector

We continue our study of strongly-coupled, approximately scale-invariant gauge theories with a large number of flavours, which provide a suitable ultraviolet completion of the composite-Higgs scenario. We identify the requisite operators to realise partial compositeness of the Standard-Model fermions. In order to compute the spectrum of composite fermionic states, we extend the bottom-up holographic models, which we previously introduced to capture the main features of the non-perturbative dynamics in the Veneziano limit, by adding fermion fields in the bulk. We identify regions in parameter space where some fermionic bound states become light, depending in particular on the number of flavours, the operator scaling dimensions, and the bulk Yukawa couplings. We also observe a dense spectrum of states, when multi-scale dynamics is induced by a large backreaction of bulk scalars on the geometry. Adapting the formalism of the holographic Wilsonian renormalisation group, we study the linear coupling between the composite and elementary fermions, as a function of energy scale. We find that, in some circumstances, the associated operators are dangerously irrelevant: the renormalisation-group flow gives rise to a large linear coupling in the infrared, even when it is irrelevant from the point of view of the ultraviolet fixed point. We finally compute the partially composite spectrum, correlate it with the analysis of the flow, and assess the potential phenomenological implications, e.g. for the top-quark partners.

Holographic models of composite Higgs in the Veneziano limit. Part I. Bosonic sector

We study strongly-coupled, approximately scale-invariant gauge theories, which develop a mass gap in the infrared. We argue that a large number of fermion flavours is most suitable to provide an ultraviolet completion for the composite Higgs scenario. The holographic approach allows to describe the qualitative features of the non-perturbative dynamics in the Veneziano limit. We introduce new bottom-up holographic models, which incorporate the backreaction of flavour on the geometry, and show that this can correlate the mass gap to the scale of flavour-symmetry breaking. We compute the mass spectrum for the various composite bosonic states, and study its dependence on the scaling dimension of the symmetry-breaking operators, as well as on the number of flavours. The different regions with a light dilaton are critically surveyed. We carefully assess the domain of validity of the holographic approach, and compare it with lattice simulations and the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model.

Dispersive construction of two-loop $P \to πππ$ $(P=K,η)$ amplitudes

We present and develop a general dispersive framework allowing us to construct representations of the amplitudes for the processes $Pπ\toππ$, $P=K,η$, valid at the two-loop level in the low-energy expansion. The construction proceeds through a two-step iteration, starting from the tree-level amplitudes and their S and P partial-wave projections. The one-loop amplitudes are obtained for all possible configurations of pion masses. The second iteration is presented in detail in the cases where either all masses of charged and neutral pions are equal, or for the decay into three neutral pions. Issues related to analyticity properties of the amplitudes and of their lowest partial-wave projections are given particular attention. This study is introduced by a brief survey of the situation, for both experimental and theoretical aspects, of the decay modes into three pions of charged and neutral kaons and of the eta meson.

Matching long and short distances at order ${\mathcal O}(α_s)$ in the form factors for $K\toπ\ell^+\ell^-$

At order ${\mathcal O}(αG_{\mathrm F})$, the amplitudes for the decays $K\toπ\ell^+\ell^-$ involve a form factor given by the matrix element of the time-ordered product of the electromagnetic current with the four-quark operators describing weak non-leptonic neutral-current transitions between a kaon and a pion. The short-distance behaviour of this time-ordered product, when considered at order ${\mathcal O}(α_s)$ in the perturbative expansion of QCD, involves terms linear and quadratic in the logarithm of the Euclidean momentum transfer squared. It is shown how one can exactly match these short-distance features using a dispersive representation of the form factor, with an absorptive part given by an infinite sum of zero-width resonances following a Regge-type spectrum. Some phenomenology-related issues are briefly discussed.

Complete One-Loop Renormalization of the Higgs-Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian

The electroweak sector of the Standard Model can be formulated in a way similar to Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT), but extended by a singlet scalar. The resulting effective field theory (EFT) is called Higgs-Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian (EWCh$\mathcal{L}$) and is the most general approach to new physics in the Higgs sector. It solely assumes the pattern of symmetry breaking leading to the three electroweak Goldstone bosons (i.e. massive $W$ and $Z$) and the existence of a Higgs-like scalar particle. The power counting of the EWCh$\mathcal{L}$ is given by a generalization of the momentum expansion of ChPT. It is connected to a loop expansion, making the theory renormalizable order by order in the EFT. I will briefly review the construction of the EWCh$\mathcal{L}$ and its power counting. Then, I will discuss the complete one-loop renormalization of the EWCh$\mathcal{L}$ employing the background-field method and the super-heat-kernel expansion. This computation confirms the power counting assumptions, is consistent with the completeness of the operator basis, and reproduces known results of subsectors in the appropriate limits.

On the amplitudes for the CP-conserving $K^\pm(K_S)\toπ^\pm(π^0)\ell^+\ell^-$ rare decay modes

The amplitudes for the rare decay modes $K^\pm\toπ^\pm\ell^+\ell^-$ and $K_S\toπ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ are studied with the aim of obtaining predictions for them, such as to enable the possibility to search for violations of lepton-flavour universality in the kaon sector. The issue is first addressed from the perspective of the low-energy expansion, and a two-loop representation of the corresponding form factors is constructed, leaving as unknown quantities their values and slopes at vanishing momentum transfer. In a second step a phenomenological determination of the latter is proposed. It consists of the contribution of the resonant two-pion state in the $P$ wave, and of the leading short-distance contribution determined by the operator-product expansion. The interpolation between the two energy regimes is described by an infinite tower of zero-width resonances matching the QCD short-distance behaviour. Finally, perspectives for future improvements in the theoretical understanding of these amplitudes are discussed.

Non-perturbative analysis of the spectrum of meson resonances in an ultraviolet-complete composite-Higgs model

We consider a vector-like gauge theory of fermions that confines at the multi-TeV scale, and that realizes the Higgs particle as a composite Goldstone boson. The weak interactions are embedded in the unbroken subgroup $Sp(4)$ of a spontaneously broken $SU(4)$ flavour group. The meson resonances appear as poles in the two-point correlators of fermion bilinears, and include the Goldstone bosons plus a massive pseudoscalar $η'$, as well as scalars, vectors and axial vectors. We compute the mass spectrum of these mesons, as well as their decay constants, in the chiral limit, in the approximation where the hypercolour $Sp(2N)$ dynamics is described by four-fermion operators, à la Nambu-Jona Lasinio. By resumming the leading diagrams in the $1/N$ expansion, we find that the spin-one states lie beyond the LHC reach, while spin-zero electroweak-singlet states may be as light as the Goldstone-boson decay constant, $f\sim 1$ TeV. We also confront our results with a set of available spectral sum rules. In order to supply composite top-quark partners, the theory contains additional fermions carrying both hypercolour and ordinary colour, with an associated flavour symmetry-breaking pattern $SU(6)/SO(6)$. We identify and analyse several non-trivial features of the complete two-sector gauge theory: the 't~Hooft anomaly matching conditions; the higher-dimension operator which incorporates the effects of the hypercolour axial-singlet anomaly; the coupled mass-gap equations; the mixing between the singlet mesons of the two sectors, resulting in an extra Goldstone boson $η_0$, and novel spectral sum rules. Assuming that the strength of the four-fermion interaction is the same in the two sectors, we find that the coloured vector and scalar mesons have masses $\gtrsim 4 f$, while the masses of coloured pseudo-Goldstone bosons, induced by gluon loops, are $\gtrsim 1.5f$.

On some aspects of isospin breaking in the decay $K^pm$ $\to$ $π^0 π^0 e^\pm$ $\stackrel{_{(-)}}{ν_e}$

Two aspects of isospin breaking in the decay $K^\pm \to π^0 π^0 e^\pm \stackrel{_{(-)}}{ν_e}$ are studied and discussed. The first addresses the possible influence of the phenomenological description of the unitarity cusp on the extraction of the normalization of the form factor from data. Using the scalar form factor of the pion as a theoretical laboratory, we find that this determination is robust under variations of the phenomenological parameterizations of the form factor. The second aspect concerns the issue of radiative corrections. We compute the radiative corrections to the total decay rate for $K^\pm \to π^0 π^0 e^\pm \stackrel{_{(-)}}{ν_e}$ in a setting that allows comparison with the way radiative corrections were handled in the channel $K^\pm \to π^+ π^- e^\pm \stackrel{_{(-)}}{ν_e}$. We find that once radiative corrections are included, the normalizations of the form factor as determined experimentally from data in the two decay channels come to a better agreement. The remaining discrepancy can easily be accounted for by other isospin-breaking corrections, mainly those due to the difference between the masses of the up and down quarks.

Isospin breaking in pion and $K_{e4}$ form factors

Isospin breaking in the $K_{\ell 4}$ form factors induced by the difference between charged and neutral pion masses is discussed within a framework built on suitably subtracted dispersion representations. The $K_{\ell 4}$ form factors are constructed in an iterative way up to two loops in the low-energy expansion by implementing analyticity, crossing, and unitarity due to two-meson intermediate states. Analytical expressions for the phases of the two-loop form factors of the $K^\pm\toπ^+π^- e^\pm ν_e$ channel are presented, allowing one to connect the difference of form-factor phase shifts measured experimentally (out of the isospin limit) and the difference of $S$- and $P$-wave $ππ$ phase shifts studied theoretically (in the isospin limit). The dependence with respect to the two $S$-wave scattering lengths $a_0^0$ and $a_0^2$ in the isospin limit is worked out in a general way, in contrast to previous analyses based on one-loop chiral perturbation theory. The results on the phases of the $K^\pm\toπ^+π^- e^\pm ν_e$ form factors obtained by the NA48/2 collaboration at the CERN SPS are reanalysed including isospin-breaking correction to extract values for the scattering lengths $a_0^0$ and $a_0^2$.

Narrow Tetraquarks at Large N

Following a recent suggestion by Weinberg, we use the large-N expansion in QCD to discuss the decay amplitudes of tetraquarks into ordinary mesons as well as their mixing properties. We find that the flavor structure of the tetraquark is a crucial ingredient to determine both this mixing as well as the decays. Although in some cases tetraquarks should be expected to be as narrow as ordinary mesons, they may get to be even narrower, depending on this flavor structure.
