A Generalized Algebraic Theory for Type Theory with Explicit Universe Polymorphism

We present generalized algebraic theories corresponding to slightly modified versions of two of the type theories in our paper Type Theory with Explicit Universe Polymorphism. We first present a generalized algebraic theory for categories with families with extra structure corresponding to Martin-Lof type theory with an external tower of universes. We then present a generalized algebraic theory for level-indexed categories with families with extra structure corresponding to Martin-Lof type theory with explicit universe polymorphism: a theory with universe level judgments, internally indexed universes, and level-indexed products. In this way we get abstract characterizations of the two theories as initial models of their respective generalized algebraic theories. We thus abstract from details of the grammar and inference rules of the type theories and highlight their high-level structure. More broadly, the present work can be viewed as a case study of a uniform approach to categorical logic based on generalized algebraic theories and categories with families. We also discuss the relevance to Voevodsky's initiality conjecture project.

On symmetries of spheres in univalent foundations

Working in univalent foundations, we investigate the symmetries of spheres, i.e., the types of the form $\mathbb{S}^n = \mathbb{S}^n$. The case of the circle has a slick answer: the symmetries of the circle form two copies of the circle. For higher-dimensional spheres, the type of symmetries has again two connected components, namely the components of the maps of degree plus or minus one. Each of the two components has $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ as fundamental group. For the latter result, we develop an EHP long exact sequence.

Type Theory with Explicit Universe Polymorphism (revised and extended version)

The aim of this paper is to refine and extend proposals by Sozeau and Tabareau and by Voevodsky for universe polymorphism in type theory. In those systems judgments can depend on explicit constraints between universe levels. We here present a system where we also have products indexed by universe levels and by constraints. Our theory has judgments for internal universe levels, built up from level variables by a successor operation and a binary supremum operation, and also judgments for equality of universe levels.

A Note on Generalized Algebraic Theories and Categories with Families

We give a new syntax independent definition of the notion of a generalized algebraic theory as an initial object in a category of categories with families (cwfs) with extra structure. To this end we define inductively how to build a valid signature $\Sigma$ for a generalized algebraic theory and the associated category of cwfs with a $\Sigma$-structure and cwf-morphisms that preserve this structure on the nose. Our definition refers to uniform families of contexts, types, and terms, a purely semantic notion. Furthermore, we show how to syntactically construct initial cwfs with $\Sigma$-structures. This result can be viewed as a generalization of Birkhoff's completeness theorem for equational logic. It is obtained by extending Castellan, Clairambault, and Dybjer's construction of an initial cwf. We provide examples of generalized algebraic theories for monoids, categories, categories with families, and categories with families with extra structure for some type formers of dependent type theory. The models of these are internal monoids, internal categories, and internal categories with families (with extra structure) in a category with families.

Construction of the Circle in UniMath

We show that the type $\mathrm{T}\mathbb{Z}$ of $\mathbb{Z}$-torsors has the dependent universal property of the circle, which characterizes it up to a unique homotopy equivalence. The construction uses Voevodsky's Univalence Axiom and propositional truncation, yielding a stand-alone construction of the circle not using higher inductive types.

Syntactic Forcing Models for Coherent Logic

We present three syntactic forcing models for coherent logic. These are based on sites whose underlying category only depends on the signature of the coherent theory, and they do not presuppose that the logic has equality. As an application we give a coherent theory T and a sentence {\psi} which is T-redundant (for any geometric implication {\phi}, possibly with equality, if T + {\psi} proves {\phi}, then T proves {\phi}), yet false in the generic model of T. This answers in the negative a question by Wraith.

The univalence axiom in cubical sets

In this note we show that Voevodsky's univalence axiom holds in the model of type theory based on symmetric cubical sets. We will also discuss Swan's construction of the identity type in this variation of cubical sets. This proves that we have a model of type theory supporting dependent products, dependent sums, univalent universes, and identity types with the usual judgmental equality, and this model is formulated in a constructive metatheory.

A Normalizing Computation Rule for Propositional Extensionality in Higher-Order Minimal Logic

The univalence axiom expresses the principle of extensionality for dependent type theory. However, if we simply add the univalence axiom to type theory, then we lose the property of canonicity - that every closed term computes to a canonical form. A computation becomes `stuck' when it reaches the point that it needs to evaluate a proof term that is an application of the univalence axiom. So we wish to find a way to compute with the univalence axiom. While this problem has been solved with the formulation of cubical type theory, where the computations are expressed using a nominal extension of lambda-calculus, it may be interesting to explore alternative solutions, which do not require such an extension. As a first step, we present here a system of propositional higher-order minimal logic (PHOML). There are three kinds of typing judgement in PHOML. There are terms which inhabit types, which are the simple types over $\Omega$. There are proofs which inhabit propositions, which are the terms of type $\Omega$. The canonical propositions are those constructed from $\bot$ by implication $\supset$. Thirdly, there are paths which inhabit equations $M =_A N$, where $M$ and $N$ are terms of type $A$. There are two ways to prove an equality: reflexivity, and propositional extensionality - logically equivalent propositions are equal. This system allows for some definitional equalities that are not present in cubical type theory, namely that transport along the trivial path is identity. We present a call-by-name reduction relation for this system, and prove that the system satisfies canonicity: every closed typable term head-reduces to a canonical form. This work has been formalised in Agda.

A Vernacular for Coherent Logic

We propose a simple, yet expressive proof representation from which proofs for different proof assistants can easily be generated. The representation uses only a few inference rules and is based on a frag- ment of first-order logic called coherent logic. Coherent logic has been recognized by a number of researchers as a suitable logic for many ev- eryday mathematical developments. The proposed proof representation is accompanied by a corresponding XML format and by a suite of XSL transformations for generating formal proofs for Isabelle/Isar and Coq, as well as proofs expressed in a natural language form (formatted in LATEX or in HTML). Also, our automated theorem prover for coherent logic exports proofs in the proposed XML format. All tools are publicly available, along with a set of sample theorems.

On streams that are finitely red

Mixing induction and coinduction, we study alternative definitions of streams being finitely red. We organize our definitions into a hierarchy including also some well-known alternatives in intuitionistic analysis. The hierarchy collapses classically, but is intuitionistically of strictly decreasing strength. We characterize the differences in strength in a precise way by weak instances of the Law of Excluded Middle.

Formulas as Programs

We provide here a computational interpretation of first-order logic based on a constructive interpretation of satisfiability w.r.t. a fixed but arbitrary interpretation. In this approach the formulas themselves are programs. This contrasts with the so-called formulas as types approach in which the proofs of the formulas are typed terms that can be taken as programs. This view of computing is inspired by logic programming and constraint logic programming but differs from them in a number of crucial aspects. Formulas as programs is argued to yield a realistic approach to programming that has been realized in the implemented programming language ALMA-0 (Apt et al.) that combines the advantages of imperative and logic programming. The work here reported can also be used to reason about the correctness of non-recursive ALMA-0 programs that do not include destructive assignment.
