All reducts of the random graph are model-complete

We study locally closed transformation monoids which contain the automorphism group of the random graph. We show that such a transformation monoid is locally generated by the permutations in the monoid, or contains a constant operation, or contains an operation that maps the random graph injectively to an induced subgraph which is a clique or an independent set. As a corollary, our techniques yield a new proof of Simon Thomas' classification of the five closed supergroups of the automorphism group of the random graph; our proof uses different Ramsey-theoretic tools than the one given by Thomas, and is perhaps more straightforward. Since the monoids under consideration are endomorphism monoids of relational structures definable in the random graph, we are able to draw several model-theoretic corollaries: One consequence of our result is that all structures with a first-order definition in the random graph are model-complete. Moreover, we obtain a classification of these structures up to existential interdefinability.

Finite trees are Ramsey under topological embeddings

We show that the class of finite rooted binary plane trees is a Ramsey class (with respect to topological embeddings that map leaves to leaves). That is, for all such trees P,H and every natural number k there exists a tree T such that for every k-coloring of the (topological) copies of P in T there exists a (topological) copy H' of H in T such that all copies of P in H' have the same color. When the trees are represented by the so-called rooted triple relation, the result gives rise to a Ramsey class of relational structures with respect to induced substructures.

The reducts of equality up to primitive positive interdefinability

We initiate the study of reducts of relational structures up to primitive positive interdefinability: After providing the tools for such a study, we apply these tools in order to obtain a classification of the reducts of the logic of equality. It turns out that there exists a continuum of such reducts. Equivalently, expressed in the language of universal algebra, we classify those locally closed clones over a countable domain which contain all permutations of the domain.

aleph_0-categorical Structures: Endomorphisms and Interpretations

We extend the Ahlbrandt--Ziegler analysis of interpretability in aleph_0-categorical structures by showing that existential interpretation is controlled by the monoid of self--embeddings and positive existential interpretation of structures without constant endomorphisms is controlled by the monoid of endomorphisms in the same way as general interpretability is controlled by the automorphism group.

A Fast Algorithm and Datalog Inexpressibility for Temporal Reasoning

We introduce a new tractable temporal constraint language, which strictly contains the Ord-Horn language of Buerkert and Nebel and the class of AND/OR precedence constraints. The algorithm we present for this language decides whether a given set of constraints is consistent in time that is quadratic in the input size. We also prove that (unlike Ord-Horn) this language cannot be solved by Datalog or by establishing local consistency.

Cores of Countably Categorical Structures

A relational structure is a core, if all its endomorphisms are embeddings. This notion is important for computational complexity classification of constraint satisfaction problems. It is a fundamental fact that every finite structure has a core, i.e., has an endomorphism such that the structure induced by its image is a core; moreover, the core is unique up to isomorphism. Weprove that every ω-categorical structure has a core. Moreover, every ω-categorical structure is homomorphically equivalent to a model-complete core, which is unique up to isomorphism, and which is finite or ω-categorical. We discuss consequences for constraint satisfaction with ω-categorical templates.

On the logical complexity of convex polygon dissections

The logical depth of a graph $G$ is the minimum quantifier depth of a first order sentence defining $G$ up to isomorphism in the language of the adjacency and the equality relations. We consider the case that $G$ is a dissection of a convex polygon or, equivalently, a biconnected outerplanar graph. We bound the logical depth of a such $G$ from above by a function of combinatorial parameters of the dual tree of $G$.

Enumeration of Unlabeled Outerplanar Graphs

We determine the exact and asymptotic number of unlabeled outerplanar graphs. The exact number g_n of unlabeled outerplanar graphs on n vertices can be computed in polynomial time, and g_n is asymptotically $g n^{-5/2}ρ^{-n}$, where $g\approx0.00909941$ and $ρ^{-1}\approx7.50360$ can be approximated. Using our enumerative results we investigate several statistical properties of random unlabeled outerplanar graphs on n vertices, for instance concerning connectedness, chromatic number, and the number of edges. To obtain the results we combine classical cycle index enumeration with recent results from analytic combinatorics.

Enumeration and limit laws of series-parallel graphs

We show that the number $g_n$ of labelled series-parallel graphs on $n$ vertices is asymptotically $g_n \sim g\cdot n^{-5/2} γ^n n!$, where $γ$ and $g$ are explicit computable constants. We show that the number of edges in random series-parallel graphs is asymptotically normal with linear mean and variance, and that the number of edges is sharply concentrated around its expected value. Similar results are proved for labelled outerplanar graphs and for graphs not containing $K_{2,3}$ as a minor.
