On Logics and Homomorphism Closure

Predicate logic is the premier choice for specifying classes of relational structures. Homomorphisms are key to describing correspondences between relational structures. Questions concerning the interdependencies between these two means of characterizing (classes of) structures are of fundamental interest and can be highly non-trivial to answer. We investigate several problems regarding the homomorphism closure (homclosure) of the class of all (finite or arbitrary) models of logical sentences: membership of structures in a sentence's homclosure; sentence homclosedness; homclosure characterizability in a logic; normal forms for homclosed sentences in certain logics. For a wide variety of fragments of first- and second-order predicate logic, we clarify these problems' computational properties.

Tractability of Quantified Temporal Constraints To The Max

A temporal constraint language is a set of relations that are first-order definable over (Q;<). We show that several temporal constraint languages whose constraint satisfaction problem is maximally tractable are also maximally tractable for the more expressive quantified constraint satisfaction problem. These constraint languages are defined in terms of preservation under certain binary polymorphisms. We also present syntactic characterizations of the relations in these languages.

Maximal Digraphs With Respect to Primitive Positive Constructibility

We study the class of all finite directed graphs up to primitive positive constructability. The resulting order has a unique greatest element, namely the graph $P_1$ with one vertex and no edges. The graph $P_1$ has a unique greatest lower bound, namely the graph $P_2$ with two vertices and one directed edge. Our main result is a complete description of the greatest lower bounds of $P_2$; we call these graphs submaximal. We show that every graph that is not equivalent to $P_1$ and $P_2$ is below one of the submaximal graphs.

Constraint satisfaction problems for reducts of homogeneous graphs

For $n\geq 3$, let $(H_n, E)$ denote the $n$-th Henson graph, i.e., the unique countable homogeneous graph with exactly those finite graphs as induced subgraphs that do not embed the complete graph on $n$ vertices. We show that for all structures $Γ$ with domain $H_n$ whose relations are first-order definable in $(H_n,E)$ the constraint satisfaction problem for $Γ$ is either in P or is NP-complete. We moreover show a similar complexity dichotomy for all structures whose relations are first-order definable in a homogeneous graph whose reflexive closure is an equivalence relation. Together with earlier results, in particular for the random graph, this completes the complexity classification of constraint satisfaction problems of structures first-order definable in countably infinite homogeneous graphs: all such problems are either in P or NP-complete.

ω-categorical structures avoiding height 1 identities

The algebraic dichotomy conjecture for Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) of reducts of (infinite) finitely bounded homogeneous structures states that such CSPs are polynomial-time tractable if the model-complete core of the template has a pseudo-Siggers polymorphism, and NP-complete otherwise. One of the important questions related to the dichotomy conjecture is whether, similarly to the case of finite structures, the condition of having a pseudo-Siggers polymorphism can be replaced by the condition of having polymorphisms satisfying a fixed set of identities of height 1, i.e., identities which do not contain any nesting of functional symbols. We provide a negative answer to this question by constructing for each non-trivial set of height 1 identities a structure within the range of the conjecture whose polymorphisms do not satisfy these identities, but whose CSP is tractable nevertheless. An equivalent formulation of the dichotomy conjecture characterizes tractability of the CSP via the local satisfaction of non-trivial height 1 identities by polymorphisms of the structure. We show that local satisfaction and global satisfaction of non-trivial height 1 identities differ for $ω$-categorical structures with less than doubly exponential orbit growth, thereby resolving one of the main open problems in the algebraic theory of such structures.

Projective clone homomorphisms

It is known that a countable $ω$-categorical structure interprets all finite structures primitively positively if and only if its polymorphism clone maps to the clone of projections on a two-element set via a continuous clone homomorphism. We investigate the relationship between the existence of a clone homomorphism to the projection clone, and the existence of such a homomorphism which is continuous and thus meets the above criterion.

Tractable Combinations of Theories via Sampling

For a first-order theory $T$, the Constraint Satisfaction Problem of $T$ is the computational problem of deciding whether a given conjunction of atomic formulas is satisfiable in some model of $T$. In this article we develop sufficient conditions for polynomial-time tractability of the constraint satisfaction problem for the union of two theories with disjoint relational signatures. To this end, we introduce the concept of sampling for theories and show that samplings can be applied to examples which are not covered by the seminal result of Nelson and Oppen.

A universal-algebraic proof of the complexity dichotomy for Monotone Monadic SNP

The logic MMSNP is a restricted fragment of existential second-order logic which allows to express many interesting queries in graph theory and finite model theory. The logic was introduced by Feder and Vardi who showed that every MMSNP sentence is computationally equivalent to a finite-domain constraint satisfaction problem (CSP); the involved probabilistic reductions were derandomized by Kun using explicit constructions of expander structures. We present a new proof of the reduction to finite-domain CSPs which does not rely on the results of Kun. This new proof allows us to obtain a stronger statement and to verify the more general Bodirsky-Pinsker dichotomy conjecture for CSPs in MMSNP. Our approach uses the fact that every MMSNP sentence describes a finite union of CSPs for countably infinite $ω$-categorical structures; moreover, by a recent result of Hubička and Nešetřil, these structures can be expanded to homogeneous structures with finite relational signature and the Ramsey property. This allows us to use the universal-algebraic approach to study the computational complexity of MMSNP.

Canonical Functions: a proof via topological dynamics

Canonical functions are a powerful concept with numerous applications in the study of groups, monoids, and clones on countable structures with Ramsey-type properties. In this short note, we present a proof of the existence of canonical functions in certain sets using topological dynamics, providing a shorter alternative to the original combinatorial argument. We moreover present equivalent algebraic characterisations of canonicity.

Piecewise Linear Valued Constraint Satisfaction Problems with Fixed Number of Variables

Many combinatorial optimisation problems can be modelled as valued constraint satisfaction problems. In this paper, we present a polynomial-time algorithm solving the valued constraint satisfaction problem for a fixed number of variables and for piecewise linear cost functions. Our algorithm finds the infimum of a piecewise linear function and decides whether it is a proper minimum.

The Complexity of Combinations of Qualitative Constraint Satisfaction Problems

The CSP of a first-order theory $T$ is the problem of deciding for a given finite set $S$ of atomic formulas whether $T \cup S$ is satisfiable. Let $T_1$ and $T_2$ be two theories with countably infinite models and disjoint signatures. Nelson and Oppen presented conditions that imply decidability (or polynomial-time decidability) of $\mathrm{CSP}(T_1 \cup T_2)$ under the assumption that $\mathrm{CSP}(T_1)$ and $\mathrm{CSP}(T_2)$ are decidable (or polynomial-time decidable). We show that for a large class of $ω$-categorical theories $T_1, T_2$ the Nelson-Oppen conditions are not only sufficient, but also necessary for polynomial-time tractability of $\mathrm{CSP}(T_1 \cup T_2)$ (unless P=NP).

Hardness of Network Satisfaction for Relation Algebras with Normal Representations

We study the computational complexity of the general network satisfaction problem for a finite relation algebra $A$ with a normal representation $B$. If $B$ contains a non-trivial equivalence relation with a finite number of equivalence classes, then the network satisfaction problem for $A$ is NP-hard. As a second result, we prove hardness if $B$ has domain size at least three and contains no non-trivial equivalence relations but a symmetric atom $a$ with a forbidden triple $(a,a,a)$, that is, $a \not\leq a \circ a$. We illustrate how to apply our conditions on two small relation algebras.

Solving Equation Systems in $ω$-categorical Algebras

We study the computational complexity of deciding whether a given set of term equalities and inequalities has a solution in an $ω$-categorical algebra $\mathfrak{A}$. There are $ω$-categorical groups where this problem is undecidable. We show that if $\mathfrak{A}$ is an $ω$-categorical semilattice or an abelian group, then the problem is in P or NP-hard. The hard cases are precisely those where Pol$(\mathfrak{A},\neq)$ has a uniformly continuous minor-preserving map to the clone of projections on a two-element set. The results provide information about algebras $\mathfrak{A}$ such that Pol$(\mathfrak{A},\neq)$ does not satisfy this condition, and they are of independent interest in universal algebra. In our proofs we rely on the Barto-Pinsker theorem about the existence of pseudo-Siggers polymorphisms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the pseudo-Siggers identity has been used to prove a complexity dichotomy.

Two-element structures modulo primitive positive constructability

Primitive positive constructions have been introduced in recent work of Barto, Opršal, and Pinsker to study the computational complexity of constraint satisfaction problems. Let $\mathfrak P_{\operatorname{fin}}$ be the poset which arises from ordering all finite relational structures by pp-constructability. This poset is infinite, but we do not know whether it is uncountable. In this paper, we give a complete description of the restriction $\mathfrak P_{\operatorname{Boole}}$ of $\mathfrak P_{\operatorname{fin}}$ to relational structures on a two-element set; in particular, we prove that $\mathfrak P_{\operatorname{Boole}}$ is a lattice. Finally, we use $\mathfrak P_{\operatorname{Boole}}$ to present the various complexity regimes of Boolean constraint satisfaction problems that were described by Allender, Bauland, Immerman, Schnoor and Vollmer.

ASNP: a tame fragment of existential second-order logic

Amalgamation SNP (ASNP) is a fragment of existential second-order logic that strictly contains binary connected MMSNP of Feder and Vardi and binary guarded monotone SNP of Bienvenu, ten Cate, Lutz, and Wolter; it is a promising candidate for an expressive subclass of NP that exhibits a complexity dichotomy. We show that ASNP has a complexity dichotomy if and only if the infinite-domain dichotomy conjecture holds for constraint satisfaction problems for first-order reducts of binary finitely bounded homogeneous structures. For such CSPs, powerful universal-algebraic hardness conditions are known that are conjectured to describe the border between NP-hard and polynomial-time tractable CSPs. The connection to CSPs also implies that every ASNP sentence can be evaluated in polynomial time on classes of finite structures of bounded treewidth. We show that the syntax of ASNP is decidable. The proof relies on the fact that for classes of finite binary structures given by finitely many forbidden substructures, the amalgamation property is decidable.

Structures with Small Orbit Growth

Let $K_{exp+}$ be the class of all structures $A$ such that the automorphism group of $A$ has at most $c n^{d n}$ orbits in its componentwise action on the set of $n$-tuples with pairwise distinct entries, for some constants $c,d$ with $d < 1$. We show that $K_{exp+}$ is precisely the class of finite covers of first-order reducts of unary structures, and also that $K_{exp+}$ is precisely the class of first-order reducts of finite covers of unary structures. It follows that the class of first-order reducts of finite covers of unary structures is closed under taking model companions and model-complete cores, which is an important property when studying the constraint satisfaction problem for structures from $K_{exp+}$. We also show that Thomas' conjecture holds for $K_{exp+}$: all structures in $K_{exp+}$ have finitely many first-order reducts up to first-order interdefinability.

Piecewise Linear Valued CSPs Solvable by Linear Programming Relaxation

Valued constraint satisfaction problems (VCSPs) are a large class of combinatorial optimisation problems. The computational complexity of VCSPs depends on the set of allowed cost functions in the input. Recently, the computational complexity of all VCSPs for finite sets of cost functions over finite domains has been classified. Many natural optimisation problems, however, cannot be formulated as VCSPs over a finite domain. We initiate the systematic investigation of infinite-domain VCSPs by studying the complexity of VCSPs for piecewise linear homogeneous cost functions. Such VCSPs can be solved in polynomial time if the cost functions are improved by fully symmetric fractional operations of all arities. We show this by reducing the problem to a finite-domain VCSP which can be solved using the basic linear program relaxation. It follows that VCSPs for submodular PLH cost functions can be solved in polynomial time; in fact, we show that submodular PLH functions form a maximally tractable class of PLH cost functions.

Topology is relevant (in a dichotomy conjecture for infinite-domain constraint satisfaction problems)
