The Crossed Product, Modular (Tomita) Dynamics and its Role in the Transition of Type $III$ to Type $II_{\infty}$ v.Neumann Algebras and Connections to Quantum Gravity

We analyse the role of the crossed product and the modular (Tomita) dynamics in the transition of type $III$ to type $II_{\infty}$ v.Neumann algebras which was recently observed in papers by Witten et al. In a preceding paper we argued that type $II_{\infty}$ v.Neumann algebras display certain features which we attributed to quantum gravity effects. We claim that the action of the modular evolution on the quantum fluctuations can be understood as an aspect of quantum gravity. We mention in this context the work of Sakharov on induced gravity. Furthermore we analyse the change of the properties of projectors and partial isometries in the transition from type $III$ to type $II_{\infty}$.

The Role of Type $II_{\infty}$ v.Neumann Algebras and their Tensor Structure in Quantum Gravity}}

We will argue in this paper that the type classification of v.Neumann algebras play an important role in a theory of quantum gravity and quantum space-time physics. We provide arguments that type $II_{\infty}$ and its representation as a tensor product of an ordinary (exterior) Hilbert space algebra $\cB(\cH_I)$ and an (internal) type $II_1$ algebra, encoding, in our view, the hidden microscopic gravitational degrees of freedom, do represent the first step away from the semiclassical picture towards a full theory of quantum gravity.

The Black Hole Singularity as a Thermodynamic System being the Seat of BH Entropy

We argue in this paper that the entropy of the BH is located in the BH singularity and that the localization around the event horizon is perhaps a secondary effect. We show in particular that the dependence of the entropy located in the singularity is also proportional to $M^2$. We furthermore show that our analysis leads in a natural way to information loss as the micro structure of the BH singularity is of a completely different character compared to ordinary quantum space time underlying our classical space time manifold.

A mathematical theory of the critical point of ferromagnetic Ising systems

We develop a theory of the critical point of the ferromagnetic Ising model, whose basic objects are the ergodic (pure) states of the infinite system. It proves the existence of anomalous critical fluctuations, for dimension $\nu=2$ and, under a standard assumption, for $\nu=3$, for the model with nearest neighbor interaction, in a way which is consistent with the probabilistic approach of Cassandro, Jona-Lasinio and several others, reviewed in Jona-Lasinio's article in Phys. Rep. 352, 439 (2001). We propose to single out the state at the critical temperature $T_{c}$ among the ergodic thermal states associated to temperatures $0 \le T \le T_{c}$, by a condition of non-summable clustering of the connected two-point function. The analogous condition for the connected $(2r)-$ point functions for $r \ge 2$, together with a scaling hypothesis, proves that the (macroscopic) fluctuation state is quasi-free, also at the critical temperature, after a proper rescaling, also at the critical temperature, in agreement with a theorem by Cassandro and Jona-Lasinio, whose proof is, however, shown to be incomplete. Other subjects include topics related to universality, including spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetries and violations of universality in problems of energetic and dynamic stability.

The Thermal Substructure of General Relativity

In a first step we will provide arguments for the understanding of quantum space-time (QST), that means, the microscopic substructure which is assumed to underly ordinary smooth classical space-time, as a thermal system at each (macroscopic) point $x$ of the classical space-time manifold (ST). In this context we exploit among other things some recent findings in the foundations of quantum statistical mechanics. We argue that the classical metric tensor field $g_{ij}(x)$ plays the role of an order parameter field, signalling the existence of a primordial phase transition in which both space-time and (quantum) matter emerged, accompanied by the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of diffeomorphism invariance which is induced by the existence of quantum excitations in QST. We then analyze the role the Einstein equations (EEQ) are playing in this context and relate them to the local thermodynamical heat influx into QST at point $x$, thus defining the Einstein tensor or Ricci tensor as local heat tensor. We also define local gravitational temperature, entropy and internal energy. Finally, we give a thermodynamic interpretation of the conserved Noether current which derives from diffeomorphism invariance, separating it into heat contributions and work terms. In this connection we discuss the role and nature of tensor and non-tensor quantities and relate our investigation to the socalled energy vector of Hilbert`s classical analysis.

The Rigorous Relation between Rindler and Minkowski Quantum Field Theory in the Unruh Scenario

Traditionally the physics of the Unruh effect, i.e. the q.f.t. in the wedges $W_R$ or $W_L$ in Minkowski space is related to the physics in the Rindler Fock space, which is a proplematical strategy. In a careful analysis we show that the correct dual q.f.t. lives rather in the thermal Rindler Hilbert space and turns out to be unitarily equivalent to the corresponding Minkowski space theory in contrast to the Rindler Fock space theory. We show in particular that in thermal Rindler Hilbert space a new sort of objects occurs, viz., quasi-particle/hole creation/annihilation operators of thermal Rindler quasi-particles and holes, which do not have a pendant in Rindler Fock space. The ordinary Rindler particle operators are certain temperature dependent superpositions of these more fundamental operators. These new objects play a crucial role in this duality and via the unitary equivalence do have their counterparts in Minkowski q.f.t.

Subspaces of Z^n or R^n having Dimension (n-\varepsilon) in the (n-\varepsilon)-Expansion

In the following we construct spaces of dimension $(n\pm \varepsilon)$ lying in the neighborhood of $\mathbb{Z}^n, \mathbb{Z}^n$ in the context of the $(n-\varepsilon)$-expansion. We provide means and criteria to deform the spaces of integer dimension into this neighborhood. We argue that the field theoretic models living on these deformed spaces are the continuation of the models defined on the corresponding integer valued spaces. Furthermore we perform the continuum limit of subgraphs of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ having non-integer dimension to the corresponding (fractal) subspaces of $\mathbb{Z}^n$. We make sense of a fractal volume measure like $d^{(n-\varepsilon)}x$.

Emergent Space-Time via a Geometric Renormalization Method

We present a purely geometric renormalization scheme for metric spaces (including uncolored graphs), which consists of a coarse graining and a rescaling operation on such spaces. The coarse graining is based on the concept of quasi-isometry, which yields a sequence of discrete coarse grained spaces each having a continuum limit under the rescaling operation. We provide criteria under which such sequences do converge within a superspace of metric spaces, or may constitute the basin of attraction of a common continuum limit, which hopefully, may represent our space-time continuum. We discuss some of the properties of these coarse grained spaces as well as their continuum limits, such as scale invariance and metric similarity, and show that different layers of spacetime can carry different distance functions while being homeomorphic. Important tools in this analysis are the Gromov-Hausdorff distance functional for general metric spaces and the growth degree of graphs or networks. The whole construction is in the spirit of the Wilsonian renormalization group. Furthermore we introduce a physically relevant notion of dimension on the spaces of interest in our analysis, which e.g. for regular lattices reduces to the ordinary lattice dimension. We show that this dimension is stable under the proposed coarse graining procedure as long as the latter is sufficiently local, i.e. quasi-isometric, and discuss the conditions under which this dimension is an integer. We comment on the possibility that the limit space may turn out to be fractal in case the dimension is non-integer. At the end of the paper we briefly mention the possibility that our network carries a translocal far-order which leads to the concept of wormhole spaces and a scale dependent dimension if the coarse graining procedure is no longer local.

About the Incompleteness of the Semiclassical Picture in the BH-Information Paradox and the Quantum Hair emerging from the Coupling of Quantum Matter and Quantum Space-Time Degrees of Freedom

We argue that the semiclassical analysis of the black hole information paradox is incomplete and has to be completed by an explicit entanglement of matter and quantum gravity degrees of freedom. We study in detail the evaporation process from beginning to end in the light of our extension and show that a pure initial state remains pure over the full evaporation process, including the final state which remains after the black hole has completely evaporated. By the same token we show how the quantum hair is encoded in the micro structure of the (final) gravitational state which is entangled with the (final) radiation state.

The Structurally Dynamic Cellular Network and Quantum Graphity Approaches to Quantum Gravity and Quantum Geometry - A Review and Comparison

Starting from the working hypothesis that both physics and the corresponding mathematics and in particular geometry have to be described by means of discrete concepts on the Planck-scale, one of the many problems one has to face in this enterprise is to find the discrete protoforms of the building blocks of our ordinary continuum physics and mathematics living on a smooth background, and perhaps more importantly find a way how this continuum limit emerges from the mentioned discrete structure. We model this underlying substratum as a structurally dynamic cellular network (basically a generalisation of a cellular automaton). We regard these continuum concepts and continuum spacetime in particular as being emergent, coarse-grained and derived relative to this underlying erratic and disordered microscopic substratum, which we would like to call quantum geometry and which is expected to play by quite different rules, namely generalized cellular automaton rules. A central role in our analysis is played by a geometric renormalization group which creates (among other things) a kind of sparse translocal network of correlations between the points in classical continuous space-time and underlies, in our view, such mysterious phenomena as holography and the black hole entropy-area law. The same point of view holds for quantum theory which we also regard as a low-energy, coarse-grained continuum theory, being emergent from something more fundamental. In this paper we review our approach and compare it to the quantum graphity framework.

On the Reality of Unruh Temperature

In contrast to recent criticism we undertake to show that the notion of Unruh temperature describes a real thermal property of the vacuum if viewed from an accelerated reference frame. We embed our investigation in a more general analysis of general relativistic temperature (Tolman-Ehrenfest effect) with the entropy-maximum principle being our guiding principle. We show that the Unruh effect neatly fits into this more general framework. Our criterion of reality is, first, the possibility to transfer a quantum of acceleration radiation to the inertial laboratory where it can be studied in principle under ordinary thrmodynamical conditions. Second, we emphasize as another criterion the importance of the coincidence of the accelerated and inertial observer description as far as the final objective result is concerned.

The Thermal Aspects of Relativistic Quantum Field Theory as an Observational Window in a Deeper Layer of Quantum Space-Time or: Dirac's Revenge

In this paper we shall derive the thermal properties of the relativistic quantum vacuum from a more primordial underlying structure which shares some properties with the old Dirac-sea picture. We show in particular how the Tomita-KMS structure in RQFT is a consequence of the structure and dynamics of the underlying pattern of vacuum fluctuations. We explain the origin of the doubling phenomenon in thermofield theory and the duality symmetry between a local algebra of fields or observables and its commutant in RQFT and give an interpretation of the notion of thermal time.

Observables need not be diffeomorphism invariant in Classical and Quantum Gravity

The problem of observables in classical and quantum gravity is a long-standing one. It is sometimes argued that observable quantities should be diffeomorphsm invariant, following the philosophy of Dirac. We argue that diffeomorphism invariance in classical and quantum gravity is not primarily a case of gauge invariance but rather an example of spontaneous symmetry breaking of the diffeomorphism group. As a consequence, observables fall into two classes, Dirac observables which are invariant under the full diffeomorphism group and more general observables which take on different (expectation) values in the different phases of the broken (diffeomorphims) symmetry group. To this latter class belong for example scalar functions of the metric tensor.

Quantum Theory as emergent from an undulatory translocal Sub-Quantum Level

We argue that quantum theory is a low-energy effective theory which emerges from some sub-quantum level theory which is of an undulatory and translocal character. We show the close connection of quantum theory with both gravity and the holographic principle which are different phenomena of one and the same theory on this primordial level. An important role in our analysis is played by the concept of a generalized renormalization group connecting this primordial level and e.g. quantum theory plus a continuous space-time. We show that characteristic phenomena like the seemingly instantaneous state reduction, the EPR-paradox or the problem of polydimensions can be understood in our undulatory translocal theory in a realistic way. Most importantly, we give a realistic interpretation of the phasefunction as a collective action variable in the spirit of Bohm and explain the emergence of a macroscopic notion of time.

Gravitons as Goldstone Modes and the Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking of Diffeomorphism Invariance

We complement investigations of the gauge structure of general relativity with an analysis of the physical consequences of the spontaneous breaking of diffeomorphism invariance which manifests itself in e.g. the socalled Einstein hole problem. We analyze the nature of the gravitons as Goldstone excitations both in the classical and the quantum case. We show that the metrical field and the classical space-time manifold play the role of an order parameter field and order parameter manifold as macroscopic super structures living in an underlying presumed quantum space-time. We furthermore relate our observations to possible phase transitions in some pre big-bang era.

An Alternative to Decoherence by Environment and the Appearance of a Classical World

We provide an alternative approach to the decoherence-by-environment paradigm in the field of the quantum measurement process and the appearance of a classical world. In contrast to the decoherence approach we argue that the transition from pure states to mixtures and the appearance of macro objects (and macroscopic properties) can be understood without invoking the measurement-like influence of the environment on the pointer-states of the measuring instrument. We show that every generic many-body system contains within the class of microscopic quantum observables a subalgebra of macro observables, the spectrum of which comprises the macroscopic properties of the many-body system. Our analysis is based (among other things) on two ingenious papers by v.Neumann and v.Kampen.

Wormhole Spaces: the Common Cause for the Black Hole Entropy-Area Law,the Holographic Principle and Quantum Entanglement

We present strong arguments that the deep structure of the quantum vacuum contains a web of microscopic wormholes or short-cuts. We develop the concept of wormhole spaces and show that this web of wormholes generate a peculiar array of long-range correlations in the patterns of vacuum fluctuations on the Planck scale. We conclude that this translocal structure represents the common cause for both the BH-entropy-area law, the more general holographic principle and the entanglement phenomena in quantum theory. In so far our approach exhibits a common structure which underlies both gravity and quantum theory on a microscopic scale. A central place in our analysis is occupied by a quantitative derivation of the distribution laws of microscopic wormholes in the quantum vacuum. This makes it possible to address a number of open questions and controversial topics in the field of quantum gravity.
