Do the Hodge spectra distinguish orbifolds from manifolds? Part 1

We examine the relationship between the singular set of a compact Riemannian orbifold and the spectrum of the Hodge Laplacian on $p$-forms by computing the heat invariants associated to the $p$-spectrum. We show that the heat invariants of the $0$-spectrum together with those of the $1$-spectrum for the corresponding Hodge Laplacians are sufficient to distinguish orbifolds with singularities from manifolds as long as the singular sets have codimension $\le 3.$ This is enough to distinguish orbifolds from manifolds for dimension $\le 3.$

Spectral isoperimetric inequalities for Robin Laplacians on 2-manifolds and unbounded cones

We consider the problem of geometric optimization of the lowest eigenvalue for the Laplacian on a compact, simply-connected two-dimensional manifold with boundary subject to an attractive Robin boundary condition. We prove that in the sub-class of manifolds with the Gauss curvature bounded from above by a constant $K_\circ \ge 0$ and under the constraint of fixed perimeter, the geodesic disk of constant curvature $K_\circ$ maximizes the lowest Robin eigenvalue. In the same geometric setting, it is proved that the spectral isoperimetric inequality holds for the lowest eigenvalue of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. Finally, we adapt our methods to Robin Laplacians acting on unbounded three-dimensional cones to show that, under a constraint of fixed perimeter of the cross-section, the lowest Robin eigenvalue is maximized by the circular cone.

Effective operators for Robin eigenvalues in domains with corners

We study the eigenvalues of the Laplacian with a strong attractive Robin boundary condition in curvilinear polygons. It was known from previous works that the asymptotics of several first eigenvalues is essentially determined by the corner openings, while only rough estimates were available for the next eigenvalues. Under some geometric assumptions, we go beyond the critical eigenvalue number and give a precise asymptotics of any individual eigenvalue by establishing a link with an effective Schr\"odinger-type operator on the boundary of the domain with boundary conditions at the corners.

Spectral asymptotics for Robin Laplacians on polygonal domains

Let $Ω$ be a curvilinear polygon and $Q^γ_Ω$ be the Laplacian in $L^2(Ω)$, $Q^γ_Ωψ=-Δψ$, with the Robin boundary condition $\partial_νψ=γψ$, where $\partial_ν$ is the outer normal derivative and $γ>0$. We are interested in the behavior of the eigenvalues of $Q^γ_Ω$ as $γ$ becomes large. We prove that the asymptotics of the first eigenvalues of $Q^γ_Ω$ is determined at the leading order by those of model operators associated with the vertices: the Robin Laplacians acting on the tangent sectors associated with $\partial Ω$. In the particular case of a polygon with straight edges the first eigenpairs are exponentially close to those of the model operators. Finally, we prove a Weyl asymptotics for the eigenvalue counting function of $Q^γ_Ω$ for a threshold depending on $γ$, and show that the leading term is the same as for smooth domains.

Eigenvalues of Robin Laplacians in infinite sectors

For $α\in(0,π)$, let $U_α$ denote the infinite planar sector of opening $2α$, \[ U_α=\big\{ (x_1,x_2)\in\mathbb R^2: \big|\arg(x_1+ix_2) \big|<α\big\}, \] and $T^γ_α$ be the Laplacian in $L^2(U_α)$, $T^γ_αu= -Δu$, with the Robin boundary condition $\partial_νu=γu$, where $\partial_ν$ stands for the outer normal derivative and $γ>0$. The essential spectrum of $T^γ_α$ does not depend on the angle $α$ and equals $[-γ^2,+\infty)$, and the discrete spectrum is non-empty iff $α<\fracπ2$. In this case we show that the discrete spectrum is always finite and that each individual eigenvalue is a continous strictly increasing function of the angle $α$. In particular, there is just one discrete eigenvalue for $α\ge \fracπ{6}$. As $α$ approaches $0$, the number of discrete eigenvalues becomes arbitrary large and is minorated by $κ/α$ with a suitable $κ>0$, and the $n$th eigenvalue $E_n(T^γ_α)$ of $T^γ_α$ behaves as \[ E_n(T^γ_α)=-\dfrac{γ^2}{(2n-1)^2 α^2}+O(1) \] and admits a full asymptotic expansion in powers of $α^2$. The eigenfunctions are exponentially localized near the origin. The results are also applied to $δ$-interactions on star graphs.
