Precision electroweak shift of muonium hyperfine splitting

Electroweak second order shifts of muonium ($μ^+e^-$ bound state) energy levels are calculated for the first time. Calculation starts from on-shell one-loop elastic $μ^+ e^-$ scattering amplitudes in the center of mass frame, proceed to renormalization and to derivation of muonium matrix elements by using the momentum space wave functions. This is a reliable method unlike the unjustified four-Fermi approximation in the literature. Corrections of order $αG_F$ (with $α\sim 1/137$ the fine structure constant and $G_F$ the Fermi constant) and of order $αG_F /(m_Z a_B)$ (with $m_Z$ the Z boson mass and $a_B$ the Bohr radius) are derived from three classes of Feynman diagrams, Z self-energy, vertex and box diagrams. The ground state muonium hyperfine splitting is given in terms of the only experimentally unknown parameter, the smallest neutrino mass. It is however found that the neutrino mass dependence is very weak, making its detection difficult.

Magnetic skyrmions as host of neutrino mass spectroscopy

Large magneto-electric effect in multi-ferroics and topological protection against decays of excited magnetic skyrmions are an ideal setting for detecting radiative emission of neutrino pair (RENP). We propose a new RENP scheme using multi-ferroic magnetic skyrmion condensates in order to determine the absolute neutrino mass including the mass hierarchy patterns, the type of neutrino mass (Majorana vs Dirac), one of CP violation parameters, and to detect relic 1.9 K cosmic neutrino. We critically examine the possibility of feasible experiments, and show what are required as good targets for neutrino physics.

New method of galactic axion search

An appealing candidate of the galactic dark matter is the axion, which was postulated to solve the strong CP (Charge-conjugation Parity) violation problem in the standard particle theory. A new experimental method is proposed to determine the axion mass. The method uses collectively and coherently excited atoms or molecules, the trigger laser inducing galactic axion absorption along with signal photon emission to be detected.

Extraordinary water adsorption characteristics of graphene oxide

The laminated structure of graphene oxide (GO) confers unique interactions with water molecules which may be utilised in a range of applications that require materials with tuneable hygroscopic properties. Precise roles of the expandable interlayer spacing and functional groups in GO laminates are not fully understood till date. Herein, we report experimental and theoretical study on the adsorption and desorption behaviour of water in GO laminates as a function of relative pressure. We have observed that GO imparts excellent water uptake capacity of up to 0.58 gram of water per gram of GO (g g-1), which is much higher than silica gel a conventional desiccant material. More interestingly, the adsorption and desorption kinetics of GO is one order of magnitude higher than silica gel. The observed extraordinary adsorption/desorption rate can be attributed to the high capillary pressure in GO laminates as well as micro meter sized tunnel like wrinkles located at the surface.

Nuclear resonant scattering experiment with fast time response: new scheme for observation of $^{229\rm m}$Th radiative decay

Nuclear resonant excitation of the 29.19-keV level in $^{229}$Th with high-brilliance synchrotron- radiation and detection of its decay signal, are proposed with the aim of populating the extremely low-energy isomeric state of $^{229}$Th.The proposed experiment, known as nuclear resonant scattering (NRS), has the merit of being free from uncertainties about the isomer level energy. However, it requires higher time resolution and shorter tail in the response function of the detector than that of conventional NRS experiments because of the short lifetime of the 29.19-keV state. We have fabricated an X-ray detector system which has a time resolution of 56 ps and a shorter tail function than the previously reported one. We have demonstrated an NRS experiment with the 26.27-keV nuclear level of $^{201}$Hg for feasibility assessment of the $^{229}$Th experiment. The NRS signal is clearly distinct from the prompt electronic scattering signal by the implemented detector system. The half-life of the 26.27-keV state of $^{201}$Hg is determined as 629 $\pm$ 18 ps which is better precision by a factor three than that reported to date.

On the mechanism of gas adsorption for pristine, defective and functionalized graphene

Defect is no longer deemed an adverse aspect of graphene. Contrarily, it can pave ways of extending applicability of graphene. Here, we discuss the effects of three types of defects on graphene: carbon deficiency, adatom (single Fe) dopant and introduction of functional groups (carboxyl, pyran group) on NO2 gas adsorption via density functional theory method. We have observed that the unsaturated carbon in defected graphene is highly active to attract NO2 molecules. Our study suggests that introducing Fe on graphene can enhance the NO2 adsorption process. Adsorption energy calculations suggest the enhancement in NO2 adsorption is more profound for Fe-doped mono and tetra vacant graphene than Fe doped bi- and tri-vacant graphene. This study could potentially be useful in developing adsorption-based applications of graphene.

A new method of creating high intensity neutron source

We propose a new scheme of producing intense neutron beam whose yields exceed those of existing facilities by many orders of magnitude. This scheme uses the recently proposed photon beam extracted from circulating quantum ions, which is directed to a deuteron target for photo-disintegration. The calculated neutron energy spectrum is nearly flat down to neV range, except a threshold rise and its adjacent wide structure. Hence, there exists a possibility of directly using sub-eV neutrons without a moderator. We shall have brief comments on promising particle physics applications using this large yield of neutron.

Yet another symmetry breaking to be discovered

The discovery of spontaneous symmetry breaking in particle physics was the greatest contribution in Nambu's achievements. There is another class of symmetries that exist in the low energy nature, yet is doomed to be broken at high energy, due to a lack of protection of the gauge symmetry. I shall review our approach to search for this class of symmetry breaking, the lepton number violation linked to generation of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in our universe.

Interference effect between $ϕ$ and $Λ(1520)$ production channels in the $γp \rightarrow K^+K^-p$ reaction near threshold

The $ϕ$-$Λ(1520)$ interference effect in the $γp\to K^+K^-p$ reaction has been measured for the first time in the energy range from 1.673 to 2.173 GeV. The relative phases between $ϕ$ and $Λ(1520)$ production amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The measurement results support strong constructive interference when $K^+K^-$ pairs are observed at forward angles, but destructive interference for proton emission at forward angles. Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the $\sqrt{s}=2.1$ GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for $ϕ$ photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange and rescattering processes via other hyperon states.

Basic oscillation measurables in the neutrino pair beam

It is shown that the vector current contribution of neutrino interaction with electrons in ion gives rise to oscillating component, which is absent for the axial-vector contribution, when a single neutrino is detected in the recently proposed neutrino pair beam. CP violation measurements are thus possible with high precision along with determination of mass hierarchical patterns.

Photon and neutrino-pair emission from circulating quantum ions

The recent proposal of photon and neutrino pair beam is extensively investigated. Production rates, both differential and total, of single photon, two-photon and neutrino-pair emitted from quantum ions in circular motion are calculated for any velocity of ion. This part is an extension of our previous results at highest energies to lower energies of circulating ions, and helps much to identify the new process at a low energy ion ring. We clarify how to utilize the circulating ion for a new source of coherent neutrino beam despite of much stronger background photons. Once one verifies that the coherence is maintained in the initial phases of time evolution after laser irradiation, large background photon emission rates are not an obstacle against utilizing the extracted neutrino pair beam.

Neutrino mass determination using circulating heavy ions

We study process of radiative neutrino pair emission $|e\rangle \rightarrow |g \rangle + γ+ν\barν$ from coherently excited heavy ions (quantum mixture of two ionic states, the ground and an excited states) in circular motion. Determination of the neutrino mass is found to be possible with simultaneous detection of the photon and one of neutrinos in the pair down to the level of the smallest neutrino mass of order 5 meV in the three flavor scheme.

Determination of CP violation parameter using neutrino pair beam

Neutrino oscillation experiments under neutrino pair beam from circulating excited heavy ions are studied. It is found that detection of double weak events has a good sensitivity to measure CP violating parameter and distinguish mass hierarchy patterns in short baseline experiments in which the earth-induced matter effect is minimized.

Neutrino pair and gamma beams from circulating excited ions

We propose a new method of producing neutrino pair beam that consists of a mixture of neutrinos and anti-neutrinos of all flavors. The idea is based on a coherent neutrino pair emission from excited ions in circular motion. High energy gamma ray much beyond the keV range may also be produced by a different choice of excited level.

Radiative emission of neutrino pair free of quantum electrodynamic backgrounds

A scheme of quantum electrodynamic (QED) background-free radiative emission of neutrino pair (RENP) is proposed in order to achieve precision determination of neutrino properties so far not accessible. The important point for the background rejection is the fact that the dispersion relation between wave vector along propagating direction in wave guide (and in a photonic-crystal type fiber) and frequency is modified by a discretized non-vanishing effective mass. This effective mass acts as a cutoff of allowed frequencies, and one may select the RENP photon energy region free of all macro-coherently amplified QED processes by choosing the cutoff larger than the mass of neutrinos.

Experimental method of detecting relic neutrino by atomic de-excitation

The cosmic background neutrino of temperature 1.9 K affects rates of radiative emission of neutrino pair (RENP) from metastable excited atoms, since its presence blocks the pair emission by the Pauli exclusion principle. We quantitatively investigate how the Pauli blocking distorts the photon energy spectrum and calculate its sensitivity to cosmic parameters such as the neutrino temperature and its chemical potential. Important quantities for high sensitivities to these parameter measurement are found to be the level spacing of atomic de-excitation and the unknown mass value of lightest neutrino, in particular their mutual relation.

Two-photon paired solitons supported by medium polarization

We derive for the first time fundamental equations that describe soliton spatial profiles consisting of two-photon mode fields and macroscopic polarization of medium. Numerical solutions of this basic equation are presented to give single and multiple soliton chains taking an example of para-H$_2$ $v=0 \leftrightarrow 1$ vibrational system. Although effects of dissipative relaxation are included in the general form for two-level system, the existence of static soliton-condensate is established. Stability analysis of soliton solutions is given. Arguments given here support that soliton-condensates thus derived are final remnants of time evolution of macro-coherent two-photon process. These soliton-condensates are expected to be important in the proposed neutrino mass spectroscopy using atoms.

Parity violating radiative emission of neutrino pair in heavy alkaline earth atoms of even isotopes

Metastable excited states ${}^3P_2, {}^3P_0$ of heavy alkaline earth atoms of even isotopes are studied for parity violating (PV) effects in radiative emission of neutrino pair (RENP). PV terms arise from interference between two diagrams containing neutrino pair emission of valence spin current and nuclear electroweak charge density proportional to the number of neutrons in nucleus. This mechanism gives large PV effects, since it does not suffer from the suppression of 1/(electron mass) usually present for non-relativistic atomic electrons. A controllable magnetic field is crucial to identify RENP process by measuring PV observables. Results of PV asymmetries under the magnetic field reversal and the photon circular polarization reversal are presented for an example of Yb atom.
