STILTS-NLI: A Natural Language Interface for STILTS

The Starlink Tables Infrastructure Library Tool Set (STILTS) is a powerful suite for astronomical data analysis, particularly useful when dealing with large datasets. However, like other software suites in astronomy its comprehensive syntax creates a significant learning curve to new users. To address this, we present STILTS-NLI, a natural language interface that generates STILTS commands from user prompts, with agentic support for a user-friendly experience. We developed STILTS-NLI by fine-tuning a compact, open-source Large Language Model (LLM) on a synthetically generated dataset. This dataset was curated and validated to ensure both comprehensive coverage of key STILTS functionalities and the syntactic correctness of the resulting commands. Our results demonstrate that this specialised model generates valid commands that match and in some cases outperform larger proprietary models. By leveraging small, open-source models, STILTS-NLI provides an accessible, low-resource solution that lowers the barrier to entry for using STILTS.

Study of the $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ Decay at the J-PARC KOTO Experiment

The rare decay $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ was studied with the dataset taken at the J-PARC KOTO experiment in 2016, 2017, and 2018. With a single event sensitivity of $( 7.20 \pm 0.05_{\rm stat} \pm 0.66_{\rm syst} ) \times 10^{-10}$, three candidate events were observed in the signal region. After unveiling them, contaminations from $K^{\pm}$ and scattered $K_L$ decays were studied, and the total number of background events was estimated to be $1.22 \pm 0.26$. We conclude that the number of observed events is statistically consistent with the background expectation. For this dataset, we set an upper limit of $4.9 \times 10^{-9}$ on the branching fraction of $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ at the 90% confidence level.

First Search for the $K_L \to \pi^0 \gamma$ Decay

We report the first search for the $K_L \to \pi^0 \gamma$ decay, which is forbidden by Lorentz invariance, using the data from 2016 to 2018 at the J-PARC KOTO experiment. With a single event sensitivity of $(7.1\pm 0.3_{\rm stat.} \pm 1.6_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-8}$, no candidate event was observed in the signal region. The upper limit on the branching fraction was set to be $1.7\times 10^{-7}$ at the 90\% confidence level.

Exterior powers in Iwasawa theory

The Iwasawa theory of CM fields has traditionally concerned Iwasawa modules that are abelian pro-p Galois groups with ramification allowed at a maximal set of primes over p such that the module is torsion. A main conjecture for such an Iwasawa module describes its codimension one support in terms of a p-adic L-function attached to the primes of ramification. In this paper, we study more general and potentially much smaller Iwasawa modules that are quotients of exterior powers of Iwasawa modules with ramification at a set of primes over p by sums of exterior powers of inertia subgroups. We show that the higher codimension support of such quotients can be measured by finite collections of p-adic L-functions under the relevant CM main conjectures.

Search for $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ and $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 X^0$ Decays at the J-PARC KOTO Experiment

A search for the rare decay $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ was performed. With the data collected in 2015, corresponding to $2.2 \times 10^{19}$ protons on target, a single event sensitivity of $( 1.30 \pm 0.01_{\rm stat} \pm 0.14_{\rm syst} ) \times 10^{-9}$ was achieved and no candidate events were observed. We set an upper limit of $3.0 \times 10^{-9}$ for the branching fraction of $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), which improved the previous limit by almost an order of magnitude. An upper limit for $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 X^0$ was also set as $2.4 \times 10^{-9}$ at the 90% C.L., where $X^0$ is an invisible boson with a mass of $135~{\rm MeV}/c^2$.

IVOA Recommendation: SAMP - Simple Application Messaging Protocol Version 1.3

SAMP is a messaging protocol that enables astronomy software tools to interoperate and communicate. IVOA members have recognised that building a monolithic tool that attempts to fulfil all the requirements of all users is impractical, and it is a better use of our limited resources to enable individual tools to work together better. One element of this is defining common file formats for the exchange of data between different applications. Another important component is a messaging system that enables the applications to share data and take advantage of each other's functionality. SAMP builds on the success of a prior messaging protocol, PLASTIC, which has been in use since 2006 in over a dozen astronomy applications and has proven popular with users and developers. It is also intended to form a framework for more general messaging requirements.

K_1 of a p-adic group ring I. The determinantal image

We study the K-group K_1 of the group ring of a finite group over a coefficient ring which is p-adically complete and admits a lift of Frobenius. In this paper, we consider the image of K_1 under the determinant map; the central tool is the group logarithm which we can define using the Frobenius lift. Using this we prove a fixed point theorem for the determinantal image of K_1.

Holographic anatomy of fuzzballs

We present a comprehensive analysis of 2-charge fuzzball solutions, that is, horizon-free non-singular solutions of IIB supergravity characterized by a curve on R^4. We propose a precise map that relates any given curve to a specific superposition of R ground states of the D1-D5 system. To test this proposal we compute the holographic 1-point functions associated with these solutions, namely the conserved charges and the vacuum expectation values of chiral primary operators of the boundary theory, and find perfect agreement within the approximations used. In particular, all kinematical constraints are satisfied and the proposal is compatible with dynamical constraints although detailed quantitative tests would require going beyond the leading supergravity approximation. We also discuss which geometries may be dual to a given R ground state. We present the general asymptotic form that such solutions must have and present exact solutions which have such asymptotics and therefore pass all kinematical constraints. Dynamical constraints would again require going beyond the leading supergravity approximation.

Cubic structures, equivariant Euler characteristics and lattices of modular forms

We use the theory of cubic structures to give a fixed point Riemann-Roch formula for the equivariant Euler characteristics of coherent sheaves on projective flat schemes over Z with a tame action of a finite abelian group. This formula supports a conjecture concerning the extent to which such equivariant Euler characteristics may be determined from the restriction of the sheaf to an infinitesimal neighborhood of the fixed point locus. Our results are applied to study the module structure of modular forms having Fourier coefficients in a ring of algebraic integers, as well as the action of diamond Hecke operators on the Mordell-Weil groups and Tate-Shafarevich groups of Jacobians of modular curves.

A study of the Navier-Stokes-alpha model for two-dimensional turbulence

For wavenumbers k such that k * alpha > 1, corresponding to spatial scales smaller than alpha, there are three candidate power laws for the energy spectrum of the Navier-Stokes-alpha model, corresponding to three possible dynamical eddy turnover time scales in the model equations: one from the smoothed field, the second from the rough field and the third from a special combination of the two. Using two-dimensional turbulence as a test case, we measure the scaling of the spectra from high-resolution simulations of the Navier-Stokes-alpha model, in the limit as alpha goes to infinity. We show that the energy spectrum of the smoothed velocity field scales as k^{-7} in the direct enstrophy cascade regime, consistent with dynamics dominated by the time scale of the rough velocity field.
