TRAGALDABAS. First results on cosmic ray studies and their relation with the solar activity, the Earth magnetic field and the atmospheric properties

Cosmic rays originating from extraterrestrial sources are permanently arriving at Earth atmosphere, where they produce up to billions of secondary particles. The analysis of the secondary particles reaching to the surface of the Earth may provide a very valuable information about the Sun activity, changes in the geomagnetic field and the atmosphere, among others. In this article, we present the first preliminary results of the analysis of the cosmic rays measured with a high resolution tracking detector, TRAGALDABAS, located at the Univ. of Santiago de Compostela, in Spain.

Ultracold atomic quantum gases far from equilibrium

We calculate the time evolution of a far-from-equilibrium initial state of a non-relativistic ultracold Bose gas in one spatial dimension. The non-perturbative approximation scheme is based on a systematic expansion of the two-particle irreducible effective action in powers of the inverse number of field components. This yields dynamic equations which contain direct scattering, memory and off-shell effects that are not captured in mean-field theory.

MSSM Electroweak Baryogenesis and Flavour Mixing in Transport Equations

We make use of the formalism developed in Ref. [1], and calculate the chargino mediated baryogenesis in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. The formalism makes use of a gradient expansion of the Kadanoff-Baym equations for mixing fermions. For illustrative purposes, we first discuss the semiclassical transport equations for mixing bosons in a space-time dependent Higgs background. To calculate the baryon asymmetry, we solve a standard set of diffusion equations, according to which the chargino asymmetry is transported to the top sector, where it biases sphaleron transitions. At the end we make a qualitative and quantitative comparison of our results with the existing work. We find that the production of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe by CP-violating currents in the chargino sector is strongly constrained by measurements of electric dipole moments.

Phenomenology of a Quark Mass Matrix from Six Dimensions and its implication for the Strong CP problem

A model of quark mass matrices from six dimensions, which is nearly democatic in nature and which is previously constructed by two of us (PQH and MS), is studied in detail in this manuscript. We found that not only it fits all the six quark masses as well as the CKM matrix but also that there exists a region in the allowed parameter space of the model where the constraint on the parameter \barθ of the Strong CP problem is satisfied. This region itself puts a constraint on the CKM parameters \barρ and \barη. As such, through our analysis, there appears to be a deep connection between Strong and Weak CP in this model

Almost Pure Phase Mass Matrices from Six Dimensions

A model of quark masses and mixing angles is constructed within the framework of two large extra compact dimensions. A ``democratic'' pure phase mass matrix arises in a rather interesting way. This type of mass matrix has often been used as a phenomenologically viable ansatz, albeit one which had very little dynamical justification. It turns out that the idea of Large Extra Dimensions provides a fresh look at this interesting phenomenological ansatz as presented in this paper. Some possible interesting connections to the strong CP problem will also be presented.

Improved Results in Supersymmetric Electroweak Baryogenesis

Electroweak baryogenesis provides a very attractive scenario to explain the origin of the baryon asymmetry. The mechanism of electroweak baryogenesis makes use of the baryon number anomaly and relies on physics that can be tested experimentally. It is today understood that, if the Higgs mass is not larger than 120 GeV, this mechanism may be effective within supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model. In this work, we reconsider the question of baryon number generation at the electroweak phase transition within the context of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. We derive the relevant diffusion equations, give a consistent definition of the sources, and compare our results with those appearing in the recent literature on this subject

Supersymmetric CP-violating Currents and Electroweak Baryogenesis

In this work we compute the CP-violating currents of the right-handed stops and Higgsinos, induced by the presence of non-trivial vacuum expectation values of the Higgs fields within the context of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) with explicit CP-violating phases. Using the Keldysh formalism, we perform the computation of the currents at finite temperature, in an expansion of derivatives of the Higgs fields. Contrary to previous works, we implement a resummation of the Higgs mass insertion effects to all orders in perturbation theory. While the components of the right-handed stop current j^μ_{\widetilde t_R} become proportional to the difference H_2 \partial^μH_1-H_1 \partial^μ H_2 (suppressed by Δβ), the Higgsino currents, j^μ_{\widetilde{H}_i}, present contributions proportional to both H_2 \partial^μH_1\pm H_1 \partial^μ H_2. For large values of the charged Higgs mass and moderate values of \tanβthe contribution to the source proportional to H_2 \partial^μH_1+H_1 \partial^μ H_2 in the diffusion equations become sizeable, although it is suppressed by the Higgsino number violating interaction rate Γ_μ^{-1/2}. For small values of the wall velocity, 0.04\simlt v_ω\simlt 0.1, the total contribution leads to acceptable values of the baryon asymmetry for values of the CP-violating phases ϕ_{CP} in the range 0.04\simlt|\sinϕ_{CP}|\simlt 1. Finally, we comment on the relevance of the latest results of Higgs searches at LEP2 for the mechanism of electroweak baryogenesis within the MSSM.

Electroweak Baryogenesis in the MSSM

We review the baryogenesis scenario in the MSSM at the perturbative level and, in particular, the impact of two-loop corrections on the strength of the phase transition and the amount of generated baryon asymmetry. We confirm the baryogenesis window, where m_H is less than 115GeV, for m_Q less than a few GeV, and the right-handed stop mass is constrained in the region between 100GeV and the top mass. This scenario will be tested at LEP and Tevatron colliders.

Bubbles in the supersymmetric standard model

We compute the tunneling probability from the symmetric phase to the true vacuum, in the first order electroweak phase transition of the MSSM, and the corresponding Higgs profiles along the bubble wall. We use the resummed two-loop temperature-dependent effective potential, and pay particular attention to the light stop scenario, where the phase transition can be sufficiently strongly first order not to wipe off any previously generated baryon asymmetry. We compute the bubble parameters which are relevant for the baryogenesis mechanism: the wall thickness and $Δβ$. The two-loop corrections provide important enhancement effects, with respect to the one-loop results, in the amount of baryon asymmetry.
