Scaling Laws for Thermodiffusively Unstable Lean Premixed Turbulent Hydrogen-Air Flames

Lean premixed hydrogen-air flames are strongly affected by thermodiffusive (TD) instabilities, which can alter the flame structure and enhance the local reactivity many-fold. Two recent models (Howarth et al. (Combust.~Flame 253, 2023) and Rieth et al. (MSC 2023)) describe the scaling of the stretch factor in turbulent hydrogen flames with the Karlovitz number using different parameters, i.e., the $\omega_2$ parameter from linear stability theory and the ratio of the Zel'dovich to the Peclet number (${Ze}/{Pe}$). Using a comprehensive set of 91 direct numerical simulation (DNS) cases spanning a wide range of pressures, equivalence ratios, turbulence intensities, and flow configurations, both formulations are systematically evaluated and an adapted formulation is proposed. The analysis of the governing non-dimensional groups reveals a scaling behavior characterized by two distinct regimes. In the first regime, typically relevant for burner and gas turbine conditions, both models reduce to an identical form that depends solely on the Karlovitz number and the stretch factor of laminar flames, independent of $\omega_2$ or ${Ze}/{Pe}$. In the second regime, characterized by ultra-low flame speeds, the explicit consideration of $\omega_2$ or the ratio ${Ze}/{Pe}$ is required for accurate scaling. In both regimes, the two models predict the DNS data reasonably well and reduce to the same functional form of non-dimensional groups, indicating their physical equivalence.

Developing Structural, High-heat flux and Plasma Facing Materials for a near-term DEMO Fusion Power Plant: the EU Assessment

The findings of the EU 'Materials Assessment Group' (MAG), within the 2012 EU Fusion Roadmap exercise, are discussed. MAG analysed the technological readiness of structural, plasma facing and high heat flux materials for a DEMO concept to be constructed in the early 2030s, proposing a coherent strategy for R&D up to a DEMO construction decision. Technical consequences for the materials required and the development, testing and modelling programmes, are analysed using: a systems engineering approach, considering reactor operational cycles, efficient maintenance and inspection requirements, and interaction with functional materials/coolants; and a project-based risk analysis, with R&D to mitigate risks from material shortcomings including development of specific risk mitigation materials.

Stability of an Exciton bound to an Ionized Donor in Quantum Dots

Total energy, binding energy, recombination rate (of the electron hole pair) for an exciton (X) bound in a parabolic two dimensional quantum dot by a donor impurity located on the z axis at a distance d from the dot plane, are calculated by using the Hartree formalism with a recently developed numerical method (PMM) for the solution of the Schroedinger equation. As our analysis indicates there is a critical dot radius such that for radius less than the critical radius the complex is unstable and with an increase of the impurity distance this critical radius increases. Furthermore, there is a critical value of the mass ratio such that for mass ratio less than the critical value the complex is stable. The appearance of this stability condition depends both on the impurity distance and the dot radius, in a way that with an increase of the impurity distance we have an increase in the maximum dot radius where this stability condition appears. For dot radii greater than this maximum dot radius (for fixed impurity distance) the complex is always stable.
