Conditional stability for backward parabolic equations with $\rm{Log}\rm{Lip}_t \times \rm{Lip}_x$-coefficients

In this paper we present an improvement of [Math. Ann. 345 (2009), 213--243], where the authors proved a result concerning continuous dependence for backward parabolic operators whose coefficients are Log-Lipschitz in $t$ and $C^2$ in $x$. The $C^2$ regularity with respect to $x$ had to be assumed for technical reasons. Here we remove this assumption, replacing it with Lipschitz-continuity. The main tools in the proof are Littlewood-Paley theory and Bony's paraproduct as well as a result of Coifman and Meyer [Ast\'erisque 57, 1978, Th. 35].

Attractors for singularly perturbed hyperbolic equations on unbounded domains

For an arbitrary unbounded domain $Ω\subset\R^3$ and for $\eps>0$, we consider the damped hyperbolic equations \leqno{(H_\eps)} \eps u_{tt}+ u_t+β(x)u- \sum_{ij}(a_{ij}(x) u_{x_j})_{x_i}&=f(x,u),\quad x\in Ω, t\in\ro0,\infty.., u(x,t)&=0,\quad x\in \partial Ω, t\in\ro0,\infty... and their singular limit as $\eps\to0$, i.e. the parabolic equation \leqno{(P)} u_t+β(x)u- \sum_{ij}(a_{ij}(x)u_{x_j})_{x_i}&=f(x,u),\quad x\in Ω, t\in\ro0,\infty.., u(x,t)&=0,\quad x\in \partial Ω, t\in\ro0,\infty... Under suitable assumptions, $(H_\eps)$ possesses a compact global attractor $\Cal A_\eps$ in the phase space $H^1_0(Ω)\times L^2(Ω)$, while $(P)$ possesses a compact global attractor $\widetilde{\Cal A_0}$ in the phase space $H^1_0(Ω)$, which can be embedded into a compact set ${\Cal A_0}\subset H^1_0(Ω)\times L^2(Ω)$. We show that, as $\eps\to0$, the family $({\Cal A_\eps})_{\eps\in[0,\infty[}$ is upper semicontinuous with respect to the topology of $H^1_0(Ω)\times H^{-1}(Ω)$. We thus extend a well known result by Hale and Raugel in three directions: first, we allow $f$ to have critical growth; second, we let $Ω$ be unbounded; last, we do not make any smoothness assumption on $\partialΩ$, $β(\cdot)$, $a_{ij}(\cdot)$ and $f(\cdot,u)$.

Characterization of the limit of some higher dymensional thin domain problems

A reaction-diffusion equation on a family of three dimensional thin domains, collapsing onto a two dimensional subspace, is considered. In \cite{\rfa pr..} it was proved that, as the thickness of the domains tends to zero, the solutions of the equations converge in a strong sense to the solutions of an abstract semilinear parabolic equation living in a closed subspace of $H^1$. Also, existence and upper semicontinuity of the attractors was proved. In this work, for a specific class of domains, the limit problem is completely characterized as a system of two-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations, coupled by mean of compatibility and balance boundary conditions.

Inertial manifolds on squeezed domains

Let $Ω$ be an arbitrary smooth bounded domain in $\R^2$ and $ε>0$ be arbitrary. Squeeze $Ω$ by the factor $ε$ in the $y$-direction to obtain the squeezed domain $Ω_ε=\{(x,εy)\mid (x,y)\inΩ\}$. In this paper we study the family of reaction-diffusion equations $$ \alignedat 2 u_t&=Δu+f(u),&\quad &t>0, (x,y)\inΩ_ε\partial_{ν_ε} u&=0,& & t>0, (x,y)\in\partialΩ_ε,\endalignedat\tag $E_ε$ $$ where $f$ is a dissipative nonlinearity of polynomial growth. In a previous paper we showed that, as $ε\to 0$, the equations $(E_ε)$ have a limiting equation which is an abstract semilinear parabolic equation defined on a closed linear subspace of $H^1(Ω)$. We also proved that the family ${\Cal A}_ε$ of the corresponding attractors is upper semicontinuous at $ε=0$. In this paper we prove that, if $Ω$ satisfies some natural assumptions, then the limiting equation can be characterized as a reaction-diffusion equation on a finite topological graph. Moreover, there is a family $\Cal M_ε$ of inertial $C^1$-manifolds for $(E_ε)$, of some fixed finite dimension $ν$, and, as $ε\to 0$, the flow on $\Cal M_ε$ converges in the $C^1$-sense to the limit flow on $\Cal M_0$.

Attractors and global averaging of non-autonomous reaction-diffusion equations in R^n

We consider a family of non-autonomous reaction-diffusion equations with almost periodic, rapidly oscillating principal part and nonlinear interactions. As the frequency of the oscillations tends to infinity, we prove that the solutions of the non-autonomous equations converge to the solutions of the autonomous averaged equation. If the nonlinearity is dissipative, we prove existence of compact attractors and their upper-semicontinuity at infinity.
