Comparing observations of the closely located JUICE and STEREO-A spacecraft during the widespread solar energetic particle event of 2024 May 13

JUICE was launched in April 2023, and it is now in its cruise phase to Jupiter, where it is scheduled to arrive in July 2031. JUICE carries a radiation monitor, namely the RADiation hard Electron Monitor (RADEM) to measure protons, electrons, and ions, detecting particles coming mainly from the anti-Sun direction. On 2024 May 13, a large solar energetic particle (SEP) event took place in association with an eruption close to the western limb of the Sun as seen from Earth. Providentially, at that time JUICE was located very close to STEREO-A, being separated by 0.13 au in radial distance, 0.3 deg in latitude, and 1.6 deg in longitude. Methods. We analysed the IP context using in-situ measurements and studied the proton anisotropies measured by near-Earth spacecraft and STEREO-A. We focused on an isotropic period during the decay phase of the SEP event to compute the proton energy spectrum. We fit the STEREO-A spectrum and compared it to that measured by SOHO and JUICE. Conclusions. The RADEM instrument aboard JUICE is a valuable tool for measuring SEP events in the heliosphere, providing an excellent opportunity to study and characterise the energetic particle environment in the solar wind between 0.65 and 5.2 au. The intercalibration factors between the fluxes measured by STEREO-A and JUICE at the effective energies of 6.9 MeV, 13.3 MeV, 21.6 MeV, and 31.2 MeV are 1.02, 1.23, 1.12, and 0.95 respectively. These intercalibration factors are valid only until 2024 July 10, when the configuration of the RADEM instrument was changed.

The 17 April 2021 widespread solar energetic particle event

Context. A solar eruption on 17 April 2021 produced a widespread Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) event that was observed by five longitudinally well-separated observers in the inner heliosphere at heliocentric distances of 0.42 to 1 au: BepiColombo, Parker Solar Probe, Solar Orbiter, STEREO A, and near-Earth spacecraft. The event produced relativistic electrons and protons. It was associated with a long-lasting solar hard X-ray flare and a medium fast Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) with a speed of 880 km/s driving a shock, an EUV wave as well as long-lasting radio burst activity showing four distinct type III burst. Methods. A multi-spacecraft analysis of remote-sensing and in-situ observations is applied to attribute the SEP observations at the different locations to the various potential source regions at the Sun. An ENLIL simulation is used to characterize the interplanetary state and its role for the energetic particle transport. The magnetic connection between each spacecraft and the Sun is determined. Based on a reconstruction of the coronal shock front we determine the times when the shock establishes magnetic connections with the different observers. Radio observations are used to characterize the directivity of the four main injection episodes, which are then employed in a 2D SEP transport simulation. Results. Timing analysis of the inferred SEP solar injection suggests different source processes being important for the electron and the proton event. Comparison among the characteristics and timing of the potential particle sources, such as the CME-driven shock or the flare, suggests a stronger shock contribution for the proton event and a more likely flare-related source of the electron event. Conclusions. We find that in this event an important ingredient for the wide SEP spread was the wide longitudinal range of about 110 degrees covered by distinct SEP injections.

Multi-dimensional almost periodic type functions and applications

In this paper, we analyze multi-dimensional $({\mathrm R}_{X},{\mathcal B})$-almost periodic type functions and multi-dimensional Bohr ${\mathcal B}$-almost periodic type functions. The main structural characterizations and composition principles for the introduced classes of almost periodic functions are established. Several applications of our abstract theoretical results to the abstract Volterra integro-differential equations in Banach spaces are provided, as well.

Stepanov pseudo almost periodic functions and applications

In this work, we present basic results and applications of Stepanov pseudo almost periodic functions with measures. Using only the continuity assumption, we prove a new composition result of $\mu$-pseudo almost periodic functions in Stepanov sense. Moreover, we present different applications to semilinear differential equations and inclusions in Banach spaces with weak regular forcing terms. We prove the existence and uniqueness of $\mu$-pseudo almost periodic solutions (in the strong sense) to a class of semilinear fractional inclusions and semilinear evolution equations, respectively, provided that the nonlinear forcing terms are only Stepanov $ \mu $-pseudo almost periodic in the first variable and not a uniformly strict contraction with respect to the second argument. Some examples illustrating our theoretical results are also presented.

$c$-Almost periodic type functions and applications

In this paper, we introduce several various classes of $c$-almost periodic type functions and their Stepanov generalizations, where $c\in {\mathbb C}$ and $|c|=1.$ We also consider the corresponding classes of $c$-almost periodic type functions depending on two variables and prove several related composition principles. Plenty of illustrative examples and applications are presented.

Discontinuous Almost Automorphic Functions and Almost Automorphic Solutions of Differential Equations with Piecewise Constant Argument

In this article we introduce a class of discontinuous almost automorphic functions which appears naturally in the study of almost automorphic solutions of differential equations with piecewise constant argument. Their fundamental properties are used to prove the almost automorphicity of bounded solutions of a system of differential equations with piecewise constant argument. Due to the strong discrete character of these equations, the existence of a unique discrete almost automorphic solution of a non-autonomous almost automorphic difference system is obtained, for which conditions of exponential dichotomy and discrete Bi-almost automorphicity are fundamental.

Wright type delay differential equations with negative Schwarzian

We prove that the well-known 3/2 stability condition established for the Wright equation (WE) still holds if the nonlinearity $p(\exp(-x)-1)$ in WE is replaced by a decreasing or unimodal smooth function f with $f'(0)<0$ satisfying the standard negative feedback and below boundedness conditions and having everywhere negative Schwarz derivative.
