Benders' decomposition of the unit commitment problem with semidefinite relaxation of AC power flow constraints

In this paper we present a formulation of the unit commitment problem with AC power flow constraints. It is solved by a Benders decomposition in which the unit commitment master problem is formulated as a mixed-integer problem with linearization of the power generation constraints for improved convergence. Semidefinite programming relaxation of the rectangular AC optimal power flow is used in the subproblem, providing somewhat conservative cuts. Numerical case studies, including a 6-bus and the IEEE 118-bus network, are provided to test the effectiveness of our proposal. We show in our numerical experiments that the use of such strategy improves the quality of feasibility and optimality cuts generated by the solution of the convex relaxation of the subproblem, therefore reducing the number of iterations required for algorithm convergence.

A Low-Rank Rounding Heuristic for Semidefinite Relaxation of Hydro Unit Commitment Problems

Hydro unit commitment is the problem of maximizing water use efficiency while minimizing start-up costs in the daily operation of multiple hydro plants, subject to constraints on short-term reservoir operation, and long-term goals. A low-rank rounding heuristic is presented for the semidefinite relaxation of the mixed-integer quadratic-constrained formulation of this problem. In addition to limits on reservoir and generator operation, transmission constraints are represented by an approximate AC power flow model. In our proposed method, the mathematical program is equivalently formulated as a QCQP problem solved by convex relaxation based on semidefinite programming, followed by a MILP solution of undefined unit commitment schedules. Finally, a rank reduction procedure is applied. Effectiveness of the proposed heuristic is compared to branch-and-bound solutions for numerical case studies of varying sizes of the generation and transmission systems.

Inexactness of the Hydro-Thermal Coordination Semidefinite Relaxation

Hydro-thermal coordination is the problem of determining the optimal economic dispatch of hydro and thermal power plants over time. The physics of hydroelectricity generation is commonly simplified in the literature to account for its fundamentally nonlinear nature. Advances in convex relaxation theory have allowed the advent of Shor's semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations of quadratic models of the problem. This paper shows how a recently published SDP relaxation is only exact if a very strict condition regarding turbine efficiency is observed, failing otherwise. It further proposes the use of a set of convex envelopes as a strategy to successfully obtain a stricter lower bound of the optimal solution. This strategy is combined with a standard iterative convex-concave procedure to recover a stationary point of the original non-convex problem.

Families of (1,2)-Symplectic M etrics on Full Flag Manifolds

We obtain new families of (1,2)-symplectic invariant metrics on the full complex flag manifolds F(n). For n > 4, we characterize n-3 different n-dimensional families of (1,2)-symplectic invariant metrics on F(n). Any of these families corresponds to a different class of non-integrable invariant almost complex structure on F(n).
