Chiral magnetic effect at finite temperature in a field-theoretic approach

We investigate the existence (or lack thereof) of the chiral magnetic effect in the framework of finite temperature field theory, studied through the path integral approach and regularized via the zeta function technique. We show that, independently of the temperature, gauge invariance implies the absence of the effect, a fact proved, at zero temperature and in a Hamiltonian approach, by N. Yamamoto. Indeed, the effect only appears when the manifold is finite in the direction of the magnetic field and gauge-invariance breaking boundary conditions are imposed. We present an explicit calculation for antiperiodic and periodic boundary conditions, which do allow for a CME, since only large gauge transformations are, then, an invariance of the theory. In both cases, the associated current does depend on the temperature, a well as on the size of the sample in the direction of the magnetic field, even for a temperature-independent chiral chemical potential. In particular, for antiperiodic boundary conditions, the value of this current only agrees with the result usually quoted in the literature on the subject in the zero-temperature limit, while it decreases with the temperature in a well-determined way.

To gap or not to gap? Mass distortions and edge modes in graphene armchair nanoribbons

We investigate, in the framework of macroscopic Dirac model, the spectrum, charge density and conductivity of metallic armchair graphene nanoribbons in presence of different mass terms. We reveal the conditions and symmetries governing the presence of edge modes in the system. Depending on the mass terms present they are exponentially localized gapless or gapped modes. The latter situation is realized, in particular, for a full Kekule distortion. For this case, we calculate the mean charge and conductivity of the ribbon, and derive the traces of the presence of edge modes suitable for experimental verification.

Graphene and non-Abelian quantization

In this article we employ a simple nonrelativistic model to describe the low energy excitation of graphene. The model is based on a deformation of the Heisenberg algebra which makes the commutator of momenta proportional to the pseudo-spin. We solve the Landau problem for the resulting Hamiltonian which reduces, in the large mass limit while keeping fixed the Fermi velocity, to the usual linear one employed to describe these excitations as massless Dirac fermions. This model, extended to negative mass, allows to reproduce the leading terms in the low energy expansion of the dispersion relation for both nearest and next-to-nearest neighbor interactions. Taking into account the contributions of both Dirac points, the resulting Hall conductivity, evaluated with a $ζ$-function approach, is consistent with the anomalous integer quantum Hall effect found in graphene. Moreover, when considered in first order perturbation theory, it is shown that the next-to-leading term in the interaction between nearest neighbor produces no modifications in the spectrum of the model while an electric field perpendicular to the magnetic field produces just a rigid shift of this spectrum. Aharonov-Bohm effect in a Class of Noncommutative Theories

The Aharonov-Bohm effect including spin-noncommutative effects is considered. At linear order in $θ$, the magnetic field is gauge invariant although spatially strongly anisotropic. Despite this anisotropy, the Schrödinger-Pauli equation is separable through successive unitary transformations and the exact solution is found. The scattering amplitude is calculated and compared with the usual case. In the noncommutative Aharonov-Bohm case the differential cross section is independent of $θ$.

Perturbation Theory on the Non-Commutative Plane with a Singular Potential

In this article we study the problem of a non-relativistic particle in the presence of a singular potential in the noncommutative plane. The potential contains a term proportional to $1/R^2$, where $R^2$ is the squared distance to the origin in the noncommutative plane. We find that the spectrum of energies is non analytic in the noncommutativity parameter $θ$.
