High Multiplicity Trigger for Long-Lived Particles in CMS detector

Searches for long-lived particles (LLPs) at the CMS experiment often involve unconventional event topologies that are difficult to efficiently select using standard trigger strategies. To improve sensitivity to such signatures during LHC Run~3 operation, a dedicated High Multiplicity Trigger (HMT) has been developed and deployed in the CMS trigger system. The trigger targets events containing unusually large numbers of hits in the CMS cathode strip chamber (CSC) muon detectors, a characteristic signature of several LLP scenarios involving displaced decays in the muon system. The HMT implementation, trigger logic, rate dependence with pileup, and operational stability are described. Optimized hit multiplicity thresholds are used to maintain acceptable trigger rates under high-luminosity and high-pileup conditions while preserving high efficiency across a broad range of LLP lifetimes and kinematic regimes. The trigger performance is evaluated using both simulated event samples and proton-proton collision data collected during Run~3 of the LHC. The HMT substantially extends the CMS sensitivity to non-standard signatures associated with LLP decays and provides a flexible platform for future searches for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Hyperon II: Properties of excited hyperons

We report properties of $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma$ hyperon resonances formed in $K^-$ induced reactions. Special emphasis is laid on the analysis of the three-body final states $2\pi^0\Lambda$ and $2\pi^0\Sigma$ and of the quasi-two-body final states $\pi\Lambda(1520)$, $\bar K\Delta(1232)$, $\pi\Sigma(1385)$, $\bar K^*N$, and $\omega\Lambda$. We give pole positions of $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma$ hyperon resonances and transition residues from the $K^-p$ initial to various final states as well as Breit-Wigner masses and widths and decay branching ratios. Twenty resonances and "bumps" reported in the Review of Particle Physics are not required in our fits, evidence for five new resonances is reported. The observed mass spectrum is compared to the spectrum calculated in the Bonn quark model. Three spin doublets, six $\Lambda$ hyperons, are tentatively assigned to the SU(3) singlet system.

Radiation Testing of Electronics for the CMS Endcap Muon System

The electronics used in the data readout and triggering system for the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator at CERN are exposed to high radiation levels. This radiation can cause permanent damage to the electronic circuitry, as well as temporary effects such as data corruption induced by Single Event Upsets. Once the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) accelerator upgrades are completed it will have five times higher instantaneous luminosity than LHC, allowing for detection of rare physics processes, new particles and interactions. Tests have been performed to determine the effects of radiation on the electronic components to be used for the Endcap Muon electronics project currently being designed for installation in the CMS experiment in 2013. During these tests the digital components on the test boards were operating with active data readout while being irradiated with 55 MeV protons. In reactor tests, components were exposed to 30 years equivalent levels of neutron radiation expected at the HL-LHC. The highest total ionizing dose (TID) for the muon system is expected at the inner-most portion of the CMS detector, with 8900 rad over ten years. Our results show that Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components selected for the new electronics will operate reliably in the CMS radiation environment.

Further study of $D^+_s$ decays into $π^- π^+ π^+$

A Dalitz plot analysis of the OZI rule violating decay $D^+_s$ into $π^- π^+ π^+$ is presented using different partial wave approaches. Scalar and vector waves are described by $K$-matrices; their production is parameterized in a $P$-vector approach. Alternatively, Breit-Wigner amplitudes and Flatté parametrization are used. Special emphasis is devoted to scalar mesons. The $f_0(980)$ resonance provides the most significant contribution. Adding $f_0(1500)$ to the scalar wave leads to an acceptable fit while introduction of $f_0(1370)$ and/or $f_0(1710)$ does not lead to significant improvements. A scan of the scalar wave optimizes for $M=1452\pm 22$ MeV/c$^2$. When $f_0(1710)$ is added, the mass uncertainty increases, and the fit yields $M=1470\pm 60$ MeV/c$^2$ which is fully compatible with the nominal $f_0(1500)$ mass. The scalar wave seems to exhibit a phase motion of 270$^{\circ}$ units in the mass range from 1200 to 1650 MeV/c$^2$.
