Stacked Neural Networks for end-to-end ciliary motion analysis

Cilia are hairlike structures protruding from nearly every cell in the body. Diseases known as ciliopathies, where cilia function is disrupted, can result in a wide spectrum of disorders. However, most techniques for assessing ciliary motion rely on manual identification and tracking of cilia; this process is laborious and error-prone, and does not scale well. Even where automated ciliary motion analysis tools exist, their applicability is limited. Here, we propose an end-to-end computational machine learning pipeline that automatically identifies regions of cilia from videos, extracts patches of cilia, and classifies patients as exhibiting normal or abnormal ciliary motion. In particular, we demonstrate how convolutional LSTM are able to encode complex features while remaining sensitive enough to differentiate between a variety of motion patterns. Our framework achieves 90% with only a few hundred training epochs. We find that the combination of segmentation and classification networks in a single pipeline yields performance comparable to existing computational pipelines, while providing the additional benefit of an end-to-end, fully-automated analysis toolbox for ciliary motion.

Study of Electroweak Interactions at the Energy Frontier

With the discovery of the Higgs boson, the spectrum of particles in the Standard Model (SM) is complete. It is more important than ever to perform precision measurements and to test for deviations from SM predictions in the electroweak sector. In this report, we investigate two themes in the arena of precision electroweak measurements: the electroweak precision observables (EWPOs) that test the particle content and couplings in the SM and the minimal supersymmetric SM, and the measurements involving multiple gauge bosons in the final state which provide unique probes of the basic tenets of electroweak symmetry breaking. Among the important EWPOs we focus our discussion on M_W and sin^2 theta_eff^l, and on anomalous quartic gauge couplings probed by triboson production and vector boson scattering. We investigate the thresholds of precision that need to be achieved in order to be sensitive to new physics. We study the precision that can be achieved at various facilities on these observables. We discuss the calculational tools needed to predict SM rates and distributions in order to perform these measurements at the required precision. This report summarizes the work of the Energy Frontier Precision Study of Electroweak Interactions working group of the 2013 Community Summer Study (Snowmass).

Studies of Vector Boson Scattering And Triboson Production with DELPHES Parametrized Fast Simulation for Snowmass 2013

Multiboson production provides a unique way to probe Electroweak Symmetry Breaking (EWSB) and physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). With the discovery of the Higgs boson, the default model is that EWSB occurs according to the Higgs mechanism. Deviations from the SM in Higgs and gauge boson properties due to new physics at a higher energy scale can be parameterized by higher-dimension operators in an Effective Field Theory (EFT). We present sensitivity studies for dimension-6 and dimension-8 operators in an EFT by looking for anomalous vector boson scattering and triboson production, at proton-proton colliders with center-of-mass energies of 14 TeV, 33 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively.

On the singular spectrum for adiabatic quasi-periodic Schrödinger Operators

In this paper we study spectral properties of a family of quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators on the real line in the adiabatic limit. We assume that the adiabatic iso-energetic curve has a real branch that is extended along the momentum direction. In the energy intervals where this happens, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the Lyapunov exponent and show that the spectrum is purely singular. This result was conjectured and proved in a particular case by Fedotov and Klopp in \cite{FEKL1}.
