Thermal Benchmark and Power Benchmark Software

Power consumption and heat dissipation become key elements in the field of high-end integrated circuits, especially those used in mobile and high-speed applications, due to their increase of transistor count and clock frequencies. Dynamic thermal management strategies have been proposed and implemented in order to mitigate heat dissipation. However, there is a lack of a tool that can be used to evaluate DTM strategies and thermal response of real life systems. Therefore, in this paper we introduce and define the concepts of thermal benchmark software and power benchmark software as a software application for run-time system level thermal and power characterization

The Sine Gordon Model: Perturbation Theory and Cluster Monte Carlo

We study the expansion of the surface thickness in the 2-dimensional lattice Sine Gordon model in powers of the fugacity z. Using the expansion to order z**2, we derive lines of constant physics in the rough phase. We describe and test a VMR cluster algorithm for the Monte Carlo simulation of the model. The algorithm shows nearly no critical slowing down. We apply the algorithm in a comparison of our perturbative results with Monte Carlo data.

High Precision Renormalization Group Study of the Roughening Transition

We confirm the Kosterlitz-Thouless scenario of the roughening transition for three different Solid-On-Solid models: the Discrete Gaussian model, the Absolute-Value-Solid-On-Solid model and the dual transform of the XY model with standard (cosine) action. The method is based on a matching of the renormalization group flow of the candidate models with the flow of a bona fide KT model, the exactly solvable BCSOS model. The Monte Carlo simulations are performed using efficient cluster algorithms. We obtain high precision estimates for the critical couplings and other non-universal quantities. For the XY model with cosine action our critical coupling estimate is $β_R^{XY}=1.1197(5)$. For the roughening coupling of the Discrete Gaussian and the Absolute-Value-Solid-On-Solid model we find $K_R^{DG}=0.6645(6)$ and $K_R^{ASOS}=0.8061(3)$, respectively.

Monte Carlo Simulation of 2-D Quantum Gravity as Open Dynamically Triangulate Random Surfaces

We describe a Monte Carlo procedure for the simulation of dynamically triangulate random surfaces with a boundary (topology of a disk). The algorithm keeps the total number of triangles fixed, while the length of the boundary is allowed to fluctuate. The algorithm works in the presence of matter fields. We here present results for the pure gravity case. The algorithm reproduces the theoretical expectations.

The Solid-on-Solid Surface Width Around the Roughening Transition

We investigate the surface width $W$ of solid-on-solid surfaces in the vicinity of the roughening temperature $T_r$. Above $T_r$, $W^2$ is expected to diverge with the system size $L$ like $\ln L$. However, close to $T_r$ a clean $\ln{L}$ behavior can only be seen on extremely large lattices. Starting from the Kosterlitz-Thouless renormalization group, we derive an improved formula that describes the small $L$ behavior on both sides of $T_r$. For the Discrete Gaussian model, we used the valleys-to-mountains-reflections cluster algorithm in order to simulate the fluctuating solid-on-solid surface. The base plane above which the surface is defined is an $L \times L$ square lattice. In the simulation we took $8\leq L\leq 256$. The improved formula fits the numerical results very well. {}From the analysis, we estimate the roughening temperature to be $T_r = 0.755(3)$.

Vertex Models and Quantum Spin Systems: a nonlocal approach

Within a general cluster framework, we discuss the loop-algorithm, a new type of cluster algorithm that reduces critical slowing down in vertex models and in quantum spin systems. We cover the example of the 6-vertex model in detail. For the F-model, we present numerical results that demonstrate the effectiveness of the loop algorithm. We discuss how to modify the original algorithm for some more complicated situations, especially for quantum spin systems in one and two dimensions.

Monte Carlo Simulations of 2-Dimensional Quantum Gravity Coupled to $c = 1$ Matter

We present results of a high precision Monte Carlo simulation of dynamically triangulated random surfaces (up to $\approx$ 34,000 triangles) coupled to one scalar field ($c=1$). The mean square extent has been measured for different actions to test the universality of the leading term as a function of the size of the surfaces. Furthermore, the integrated 2-point correlation function for vertex operators is compared with conformal field theory and matrix model predictions.

The Loop-Cluster Algorithm for the Case of the 6 Vertex Model

We present the loop algorithm, a new type of cluster algorithm that we recently introduced for the F model. Using the framework of Kandel and Domany, we show how to GENERALIZE the algorithm to the arrow flip symmetric 6 vertex model. We propose the principle of least possible freezing as the guide to choosing the values of free parameters in the algorithm. Finally, we briefly discuss the application of our algorithm to simulations of quantum spin systems. In particular, all necessary information is provided for the simulation of spin $\half$ Heisenberg and $xxz$ models.

Cluster Algorithm for Vertex Models

We present a new type of cluster algorithm that strongly reduces critical slowing down in simulations of vertex models. Since the clusters are closed paths of bonds, we call it the {\em loop algorithm}. The basic steps in constructing a cluster are the break-up and the freezing of vertices. We concentrate on the case of the F model, which is a subset of the 6-vertex model exhibiting a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. The loop algorithm is also applicable to simulations of other vertex models and of one and two-dimensional quantum spin systems.

High Precision Verification of the Kosterlitz Thouless Scenario

We verify the Kosterlitz Thouless scenario for three different SOS (solid-on-solid) models, including the dual transforms of XY-models with Villain and with cosine action. The method is based on a matching of the renormalization group (RG) flow of the candidate models with the flow of a bona fide KT model, the exactly solvable BCSOS model. We obtain high precision estimates for the critical couplings and other non-universal quantities.

Cluster Algorithm for a Solid-On-Solid Model with Constraints

We adapt the VMR (valleys-to-mountains reflections) algorithm, originally devised by us for simulations of SOS models, to the BCSOS model. It is the first time that a cluster algorithm is used for a model with constraints. The performance of this new algorithm is studied in detail in both phases of the model, including a finite size scaling analysis of the autocorrelations.
