Fully gapped pairing state in spin-triplet superconductor UTe$_2$

Spin-triplet superconductors provide an ideal platform for realizing topological superconductivity with emergent Majorana quasiparticles. The promising candidate is the recently discovered superconductor UTe$ _2$, but the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter remains highly controversial. Here we determine the superconducting gap structure by the thermal conductivity of ultra-clean UTe$ _2$ single crystals. We find that the $a$ axis thermal conductivity divided by temperature $\kappa/T$ in zero-temperature limit is vanishingly small for both magnetic fields $\mathbf{H}||a$ and $\mathbf{H}||c$ axes up to $H/H_{c2}\sim 0.2$, demonstrating the absence of any types of nodes around $a$ axis contrary to the previous belief. The present results, combined with the reduction of the NMR Knight shift in the superconducting state, indicate that the superconducting order parameter belongs to the isotropic $A_u$ representation with a fully gapped pairing state, analogous to the B phase of superfluid $ ^3$He. These findings reveal that UTe$ _2$ is likely to be a long-sought three-dimensional (3D) strong topological superconductor characterized by a 3D winding number, hosting helical Majorana surface states on any crystal plane.

Evidence for the first-order topological phase transition in a Kitaev spin liquid candidate $\alpha$-RuCl$ _3$

The Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) on the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice epitomizes an entangled topological state, where the spins fractionalize into Majorana fermions. This state has aroused tremendous interest because it harbors non-Abelian anyon excitations. The half-integer quantized thermal Hall (HIQTH) conductance observed in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ is a key signature of these excitations. However, the fate of this topologically nontrivial state at intense fields remains largely elusive. Here, we report the thermal conductivity $\kappa$ and specific heat $C$ of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ with in-plane magnetic fields $H$. For the field direction perpendicular to the Ru-Ru bond, where the HIQTH effect is observed, we find a discontinuous jump in $\kappa(H)$ and a peak anomaly in $C(H)$ at $\mu_0H^*\approx11$\,T, evidencing a weak first-order phase transition. Remarkably, the HIQTH effect vanishes close to $H^*$. Furthermore, we find that the spin-fractionalization feature is retained well above $H^\ast$. These imply the emergence of the phase transition that separates two QSL phases with distinct topological properties.

Comprehensive study of muon-catalyzed nuclear reaction processes in the $dt\mu$ molecule

Muon catalyzed fusion ($\mu$CF) has recently regained considerable research interest owing to several new developments and applications. In this regard, we have performed a comprehensive study of the most important fusion reaction, namely $(dt\mu)_{J=v=0}\to\alpha$+$n$+$\mu$+17.6 MeV or $(\alpha \mu)_{nl}$+$n$+17.6 MeV. The coupled-channels Schr\"{o}dinger equation for the reaction is thus solved, satisfying the boundary condition for the muonic molecule $(dt\mu)_{\rm J=v=0}$ as the initial state and the outgoing $\alpha n \mu$ channel with the $\alpha$-$n$ $D$ wave. We employ the $dt\mu$- and $\alpha n \mu$-channel coupled three-body model. All the $d$-$t$ and $\alpha$-$n$ potentials, and the $d t$-$\alpha n$ channel-coupling nonlocal tensor potential are chosen to reproduce the observed low-energy astrophysical $S$-factor of the reaction $d$+$t\to\alpha$+$n$+17.6 MeV, as well as the total cross section of the $\alpha$+$n$ reaction. The resultant $dt\mu$ fusion rate is 1.15x10$^{12}$ s$^{-1}$. Substituting the obtained total wave function into the $T$ matrix, we have calculated absolute values of the fusion rates going to the bound and continuum states of the outgoing $\alpha$-$\mu$ pair. We then derived the initial $\alpha$-$\mu$ sticking probability $\omega_S^0$=0.857%, which is $\sim$7% smaller than the literature values ($\simeq$0.91-0.93%), and can explain the recent observations (2001) at high D-T densities. We also calculate the absolute values for the momentum and energy spectra of the emitted muon. The most important result is that the peak energy is 1.1 keV although the mean energy is 9.5 keV. This is an essential result for the ongoing experimental project to realize the generation of an ultra-slow negative muon beam by utilizing the $\mu$CF for various applications e.g., a scanning negative muon microscope and an injection source for the muon collider.

On the possibility of generating a 4-neutron resonance with a {\boldmath $T=3/2$} isospin 3-neutron force

We consider the theoretical possibility to generate a narrow resonance in the four neutron system as suggested by a recent experimental result. To that end, a phenomenological $T=3/2$ three neutron force is introduced, in addition to a realistic $NN$ interaction. We inquire what should be the strength of the $3n$ force in order to generate such a resonance. The reliability of the three-neutron force in the $T=3/2$ channel is exmined, by analyzing its consistency with the low-lying $T=1$ states of $^4$H, $^4$He and $^4$Li and the $^3{\rm H} + n$ scattering. The {\it ab initio} solution of the $4n$ Schr\"{o}dinger equation is obtained using the complex scaling method with boundary conditions appropiate to the four-body resonances. We find that in order to generate narrow $4n$ resonant states a remarkably attractive $3N$ force in the $T=3/2$ channel is required.

Resonant states of neutron-rich $\Lambda$ hypernucleus $^7_{\Lambda}$He

The structure of neutron-rich $\Lambda$ hypernucleus, $^7_{\Lambda}$He is studied within the framework of an $\alpha +\Lambda +n+n$ four-body cluster model. We predict second $3/2^+$ and $5/2^+$ states, corresponding to a $0s$ $\Lambda$ coupled to the second $2^+$ state of $^6$He, as narrow resonant states with widths $\Gamma \sim 1$ MeV to be at 0.03 MeV and 0.07 MeV respect to the $\alpha +\Lambda +n+n$ threshold. From an estimation of the differential cross section for the $^7{\rm Li} (\gamma,K^+) ^7_{\Lambda}$He reaction, there is a possibility to observe these state at JLab in the future. We also calculate the second $2^+$ state of $^6$He as resonant state within the framework of an $\alpha +n+n$ three-body cluster model. Our result is $2.81$ MeV with $\Gamma =$4.63 MeV with respect to the $\alpha +n+n$ threshold. This energy position is $\sim 1$ MeV higher, and with a much broader decay width, than the recent SPIRAL data. It is suggested that an experiment at JLab to search for the second $3/2^+$ and $5/2^+$ states of $^7_{\Lambda}$He would provide an opportunity to confirm the second $2^+$ state of the core nucleus $^6$He.

Universality in Efimov associated tetramers in 4He

We calculated, using seven realistic 4He-4He potentials in the literature, the Efimov spectra of the 4He trimer and tetramer and analyzed the universality of the systems. The three-(four-)body Schroedinger equations were solved fully nonadiabatically with the high-precision calculation method employed in our previous work on the 4He trimer and tetramer [Phys. Rev. A 85, 022502 (2012); 85, 062505 (2012)]. We found the following universality in the four-boson system: i) The critical scattering lengths at which the tetramer ground and excited states couple to the four-body threshold are independent of the choice of the two-body realistic potentials in spite of the difference in the short-range details and do not contradict the corresponding values observed in the experiments in ultracold alkali atoms when scaled with the van der Waals length r_vdW, and ii) the four-body hyperradial potential has a repulsive barrier at the four-body hyperradius R_4 \approx 3 r_vdW, which prevents the four particles from getting close together to explore nonuniversal features of the interactions at short distances. This result is an extension of the universality in Efimov trimers that the appearance of the repulsive barrier at the three-body hyperradius R_3 \approx 2 r_vdW makes the critical scattering lengths independent of the short-range details of the interactions as reported in the literature and also in the present work for the 4He trimer with the realistic potentials.

Four-body structure of neutron-rich hypernucleus $^6_{\Lambda}$H

The structure of heavy hyperhydrogen $^6_{\Lambda}$H is studied within the framework of a $tnn\Lambda$ four-body cluster model. Interactions among the constituent subunits are determined so as to reproduce reasonably well the observed low-energy properties of the $tn, t\Lambda$ and $tnn$ subsystems. As long as we reproduce the energy and width of $^5$H within the error bar, the ground state of $^6_{\Lambda}$H is obtained as a resonant state.

Linear correlations between 4He trimer and tetramer energies calculated with various realistic 4He potentials

In a previous work [Phys. Rev. A 85, 022502 (2012)] we calculated, with the use of our Gaussian expansion method for few-body systems, the energy levels and spatial structure of the 4He trimer and tetramer ground and excited states using the LM2M2 potential, which has a very strong short-range repulsion. In this work, we calculate the same quantities using the presently most accurate 4He-4He potential [M. Przybytek et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 183003 (2010)] that includes the adiabatic, relativistic, QED and residual retardation corrections. Contributions of the corrections to the tetramer ground-(excited-)state energy, -573.90 (-132.70) mK, are found to be, respectively, -4.13 (-1.52) mK, +9.37 (+3.48) mK, -1.20 (-0.46) mK and +0.16 (+0.07) mK. Further including other realistic 4He potentials, we calculated the binding energies of the trimer and tetramer ground and excited states, B_3^(0), B_3^(1), B_4^(0) and B_4^(1), respectively. We found that the four kinds of the energies for the different potentials exhibit perfect linear correlations between any two of them over the range of binding energies relevant for 4He atoms (namely, six types of the generalized Tjon lines are given). The dimerlike-pair model for 4He clusters, proposed in the previous work, predicts a simple universal relation B_4^(1)/B_2 =B_3^(0)/B_2 + 2/3, which precisely explains the correlation between the tetramer excited-state energy and the trimer ground-state energy, with B_2 being the dimer binding energy.

Variational calculation of 4He tetramer ground and excited states using a realistic pair potential

We calculated the 4He trimer and tetramer ground and excited states with the LM2M2 potential using our Gaussian expansion method (GEM) for ab initio variational calculations of few-body systems. The method has extensively been used for a variety of three-, four- and five-body systems in nuclear physics and exotic atomic/molecular physics. The trimer (tetramer) wave function is expanded in terms of symmetric three-(four-)body Gaussian basis functions, ranging from very compact to very diffuse, without assuming any pair correlation function. Calculated results of the trimer ground and excited states are in excellent agreement with the literature. Binding energies of the tetramer ground and excited states are obtained to be 558.98 mK and 127.33 mK (0.93 mK below the trimer ground state), respectively. Precisely the same shape of the short-range correlation (r_ij < 4 Å) in the dimer appear in the ground and excited states of the trimer and tetramer. Analyzing the asymptotic wave functions (accurate up to 1000 Å) of those excited states, we propose a model which predicts the binding energy of the first excited state of 4He_N measured from the 4He_{N-1} ground state to be N/2(N-1)xB_2 using dimer binding energy B_2 only; fit in N=3 and 4 is excellent.

Five-body cluster structure of double-$Λ$ hypernucleus $^{11}_{ΛΛ}$Be

Energy levels of the double $Λ$ hypernucleus, $^{11}_{ΛΛ}$Be are calculated within the framework of an $ααn ΛΛ$ five-body model. Interactions between constituent particles are determined so as to reproduce reasonably the observed low-energy properties of the $αα$, $ααn$ nuclei and the existing data for $Λ$-binding energies of the $αΛ$, $ααΛ$, $αn Λ$ and $ααn Λ$ systems. An effective $ΛΛ$ interaction is constructed so as to reproduce, within the $αΛΛ$ three-body model, the $B_{ΛΛ}$ of $^6_{ΛΛ}$He, which was extracted from the emulsion experiment, the NAGARA event. With no adjustable parameters for the $ααn ΛΛ$ system, $B_{ΛΛ}$ of the ground and bound excited states of $^{11}_{ΛΛ}$Be are calculated with the Gaussian Expansion Method. The Hida event, recently observed at KEK-E373 experiment, is interpreted as an observation of the ground state of the $^{11}_{ΛΛ}$Be.

Structure of A=7 iso-triplet $Λ$ hypernuclei studied with he four-body model

The structure of the T=1 iso-triplet hypernuclei, $^7_Λ$He, $^7_Λ$Li and $^7_Λ$Be within the framework of an $α+Λ+N+N$ four-body cluster model is studied. Interactions between the constituent subunits are determined so as to reproduce reasonably well the observed low-energy properties of the $αN$, $αΛ$, $αNN$ and $αΛN$ subsystems. Furthermore, the two-body $ΛN$ interaction is adjusted so as to reproduce the $0^+$-$1^+$ splitting of $^4_Λ$H. Also a phenomenological $ΛN$ charge symmetry breaking(CSB) interaction is introduced. The $Λ$ binding energy of the ground state in $^7_Λ$He is predicted to be 5.16(5.36) MeV with(without) the CSB interaction. The calculated energy splittings of the $3/2^+$-$5/2^+$ states in $^7_Λ$He and $^7_Λ$Li are around 0.1 MeV. We point out that there is a three-layer structure of the matter distribution, $α$ particle, $Λ$ skin, proton or neutron halo, in the $^7_Λ{\rm He}(J=5/2^+)$, $^7_Λ{\rm Li}(J=5/2^+)$ and $^7_Λ{\rm Be}(J=1/2^+)$ states.

Stau-catalyzed $^6$Li Production in Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis

If the gravitino mass is in the region from a few GeV to a few 10's GeV, the scalar lepton X such as stau is most likely the next lightest supersymmetry particle. The negatively charged and long-lived X^- may form a Coulomb bound state (A X) with a nucleus A and may affect the big-bang nucleosynthesis through catalyzed fusion process. We calculate a production cross section of Li6 from the catalyzed fusion (He4 X^-) + d \to Li6 + X^- by solving the Schrödinger equation exactly for three-body system of He4, d, and X. We utilize the state-of-the-art coupled-channel method, which is known to be very accurate to describe other three-body systems in nuclear and atomic reactions. The importance of the use of appropriate nuclear potential and the exact treatment of the quantum tunneling in the fusion process are emphasized. We find that the astrophysical S-factor at the Gamow peak corresponding to T=10 keV is 0.038 MeV barn. This leads to the Li6 abundance from the catalyzed process as Li6|_{CBBN}\simeq 4.3\times 10^{-11} (D/2.8\times 10^{-5}) ([n_{X^-}/s]/10^{-16}) in the limit of long lifetime of X. Particle physics implication of this result is also discussed.

Determination of S17 from 8B breakup by means of the method of continuum-discretized coupled-channels

The astrophysical factor for 7Be(p,γ)8B at zero energy, S17(0), is determined from an analysis of 208Pb(8B, p+7Be)208Pb at 52 MeV/nucleon by means of the method of continuum-discretized coupled-channels (CDCC) taking account of all nuclear and Coulomb breakup processes. The asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) method is used to extract S17(0) from the calculated breakup-cross-section. The main result of the present paper is S17(0)=20.9 +2.0/-1.9 eV b. The error consists of 8.4% experimental systematic error and the error due to the ambiguity in the s-wave p-7Be scattering length. This value of S17(0) differs from the one extracted with the first-order perturbation theory including Coulomb breakup by dipole transitions: 18.9 +/- 1.8 eV b. It turns out that the difference is due to the inclusion of the nuclear and Coulomb-quadrupole transitions and multi-step processes of all-order in the present work. The p-7Be interaction potential used in the CDCC calculation is also used in the ANC analysis of 7Be(p,γ)8B. The value of S17(0)=21.7 +0.62/-0.55 eV b obtained is consistent with the previous one obtained from a precise measurement of the p-capture reaction cross section extrapolated to zero incident energy, S17(0)=22.1 +/- 0.6 (expt) +/- 0.6 (theo) eV b, where (theo) stands for the error in the extrapolation. Thus, the agreement between the values of S17(0) obtained from direct 7Be(p,γ)8B and indirect 8B-breakup measurements is significantly improved.

Coulomb breakup effects on the elastic cross section of $^6$He+$^{209}$Bi scattering near Coulomb barrier energies

We accurately analyze the $^6$He+$^{209}$Bi scattering at 19 and 22.5 MeV near the Coulomb barrier energy, using the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC) based on the $n$+$n$+$^4$He+$^{209}$Bi four-body model. The three-body breakup continuum of $^6$He is discretized by diagonalizing the internal Hamiltonian of $^6$He in a space spanned by the Gaussian basis functions. The calculated elastic and total reaction cross sections are in good agreement with the experimental data, while the CDCC calculation based on the di-neutron model of $^6$He, i.e., the $^2n$+$^{4}$He+$^{209}$Bi three-body model, does not reproduce the data.

Five-body calculation of resonance and scattering states of pentaquark system

Scattering problem of the $uudd{\bar s}$ system, in the standard non-relativistic quark model of Isgur-Karl, is solved for the first time, by treating the large five-body modelspace including the $NK$ scattering channel accurately with the Gaussian expansion method and the Kohn-type coupled-channel variational method. The two-body interaction that reproduces observed properties of ordinary baryons and mesons is applied to the pentaquark system with no additional adjustable parameter. The five-body wave function calculated has the correct asymptotic form in its the scattering-channel component and describes $qq$ and $q{\bar q}$ correlations properly. The $NK$ scattering phase shift calculated shows no resonance in the energy region of the reported pentaquark $Θ^+(1540)$, that is, at 0-500 MeV above the $NK$ threshold ($1.4-1.9$ GeV in mass). The phase shift does show two resonances just above 500 MeV: a broad ${1/2}^+$ resonance with a width of $ Γ\sim~110$ MeV located at $\sim~520$ MeV ($\sim~2.0$ GeV in mass) and a sharp ${1/2}^-$ resonance with $Γ=$0.12 MeV at 540 MeV. Properties of these states are discussed.

Continuum-discretized coupled-channels method for four-body breakup reactions

Development of the method of CDCC (Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels) from the level of three-body CDCC to that of four-body CDCC is reviewed. Introduction of the pseudo-state method based on the Gaussian expansion method for discretizing the continuum states of two-body and three-body projectiles plays an essential role in the development. Furthermore, introduction of the complex-range Gaussian basis functions is important to improve the CDCC for nuclear breakup so as to accomplish that for Coulomb and nuclear breakup. A successful application of the four-body CDCC to $^6$He+$^{12}$C scattering at 18 and 229.8 MeV is reported.

Continuum-discretized coupled-channels method for four-body nuclear breakup in $^6$He+$^{12}$C scattering

We propose a fully quantum-mechanical method of treating four-body nuclear breakup processes in scattering of a projectile consisting of three constituents, by extending the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method. The three-body continuum states of the projectile are discretized by diagonalizing the internal Hamiltonian of the projectile with the Gaussian basis functions. For $^6$He+$^{12}$C scattering at 18 and 229.8 MeV, the validity of the method is tested by convergence of the elastic and breakup cross sections with respect to increasing the number of the basis functions. Effects of the four-body breakup and the Borromean structure of $^6$He on the elastic and total reaction cross sections are discussed.
