Detection of optical quasi-periodic oscillation in the blazar 3C 454.3

We analyzed 19 years of $R$-band data of the blazar 3C 454.3 from the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) archive, along with new data from its members and from public archives such as those provided by the Small and Moderate Aperture Research Telescope System (SMARTS) and the Steward Observatory projects to search for quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). We detected a QPO of $\sim$ 433 days using Lomb-Scargle periodogram, which lasted from MJD 54980--58450 as detected by the weighted wavelet Z-transform technique, making it one of the most persistent QPOs ever detected in the optical regime. The phase dispersion minimization technique was also performed to further validate this QPO claim. We detected this signal at a global significance of $2.53\sigma$ across all methodologies. To explain the observed QPO, we have considered both models focused on the accretion disk around the super-massive black hole (SMBH), and those based purely on jet emissions. Plausible jet-based models involve a shock moving down the jet in a helical magnetic field, whereas the SMBH models could involve Lense-Thirring effect-induced jet precession or dual jets in a binary SMBH system. We introduce a novel approach to distinguish genuine QPOs from spurious signals arising from annual seasonal gaps, a common limitation of ground-based observations.

Multiband Optical Variability of the Blazar 3C 454.3 on Diverse Timescales

Due to its peculiar and highly variable nature, the blazar 3C 454.3 has been extensively monitored by the WEBT team. Here, we present for the first time these long-term optical flux and color variability results using data acquired in B, V, R, and I bands over a time span of $\sim$ 2 decades. We include data from WEBT collaborators and public archives such as SMARTS, Steward Observatory, and ZTF. The data are binned and segmented to study the source over this long term when more regular sampling was available. During our study, the long-term spectral variability reveals a redder when brighter (RWB) trend, which, however, stabilizes at a particular brightness cutoff $\sim$ 14.5 mag in the I-band, after which it saturates and evolves into a complex state. This trend indicates increasing jet emission dominance over accretion disk emission until jet emission completely dominates. Plots of the spectral index variation (following $F_{\nu} \propto \nu^{-\alpha}$) reveal a bimodal distribution using a one-day binning. These correlate with two extreme phases of 3C 454.3, an outburst or high flux state and quiescent or low flux state, which are respectively jet and accretion disk dominated. We have also conducted intra-day variability studies of nine light curves and found that six of them are variable. Discrete Correlation Function (DCF) analysis between different optical waveband pairs peak at zero lags, indicating co-spatial emission in different optical bands.

Search for heavy neutral leptons in electron-positron and neutral-pion final states with the MicroBooNE detector

We present the first search for heavy neutral leptons (HNL) decaying into $\nu e^+e^-$ or $\nu\pi^0$ final states in a liquid-argon time projection chamber using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector. The data were recorded synchronously with the NuMI neutrino beam from Fermilab's Main Injector corresponding to a total exposure of $7.01 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target. We set upper limits at the $90\%$ confidence level on the mixing parameter $\lvert U_{\mu 4}\rvert^2$ in the mass ranges $10\le m_{\rm HNL}\le 150$ MeV for the $\nu e^+e^-$ channel and $150\le m_{\rm HNL}\le 245$ MeV for the $\nu\pi^0$ channel, assuming $\lvert U_{e 4}\rvert^2 = \lvert U_{\tau 4}\rvert^2 = 0$. These limits represent the most stringent constraints in the mass range $35<m_{\rm HNL}<175$ MeV and the first constraints from a direct search for $\nu\pi^0$ decays.

Systematic behavior of the fusion barrier parameters for heavy ion pairs [MSc Thesis]

The nucleus-nucleus potential is calculated in the frame work of the double folding model (DFM) to obtain the Coulomb barrier parameters (barrier position and height), starting from M3Y-Reid nucleon-nucleon interaction and realistic nuclear matter distribution. The systematic behavior of the barrier parameters with mass numbers, charges, and radii of interacting nuclei is studied. The relation between the barrier height and radius is also discussed. The systematic behavior of the barrier parameters is presented in the form of simple analytical formulae, which can be used to calculate the barrier position and height directly, and show which factors can affect them. The potentials obtained from DFM are used to derive a universal function of the nuclear proximity potential which is useful for barrier calculations for heavy ion reactions. The obtained universal function reproduces the barrier parameters within less than 2% deviation from the values obtained using DFM for heavy and super heavy ion reactions. Reactions involving {\alpha}-particle are studied individually, and another form of the universal function is presented.

Graphene nanoplatelets induced tailoring in photocatalytic activity and antibacterial characteristics of MgO/graphene nanoplatelets nanocomposites

The synthesis, physical, photocatalytic, and antibacterial properties of MgO and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) nanocomposites are reported. The crystallinity, phase, morphology, chemical bonding, and vibrational modes of prepared nanomaterials are studied. The conductive nature of GNPs is tailored via photocatalysis and enhanced antibacterial activity. It is interestingly observed that the MgO/GNPs nanocomposite with optimized GNPs content show a significant photocatalytic activity (97.23% degradation) as compared to bare MgO (43%) which makes it the potential photocatalyst for purification of industrial waste water. In addition, the effect of increased amount of GNPs on antibacterial performance of nanocomposites against pathogenic micro-organisms is researched, suggesting them toxic. MgO/GNPs 25% nanocomposite may have potential applications in waste water treatment and nanomedicine due its multifunctionality.

Optimum orientation versus orientation averaging description of cluster radioactivity

Background: The deformation of the nuclei involved in the cluster decay of heavy nuclei affect seriously their half-lives against the decay. Purpose: We investigate the description of the different decay stages in both the optimum orientation and the orientation-averaged pictures of the cluster decay process. Method: We consider the decays of 232,233,234U and 236,238Pu isotopes. The quantum mechanical knocking frequency and penetration probability based on the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation are used to find the decay width. Results: We found that the orientation-averaged decay width is one or two orders of magnitude less than its value along the non-compact optimum orientation. The difference between the two values increases with decreasing the mass number of the emitted cluster. Correspondingly, the extracted preformation probability based on the averaged decay width increases with the same orders of magnitude compared to its value obtained considering the optimum orientation. The cluster preformation probabilities (Sc) obtained in the two considered schemes give more or less comparable agreement with the Blendowske-Walliser (BW) formula based on the preformation probability of Sa(ave.) obtained from the orientation-averaging scheme. All the obtained results, including those obtained in the optimum-orientation scheme, deviate substantially from the BW law based on Sa(opt.) obtained using the optimum-orientation scheme. Conclusion: In order to account for deformations of the participating nuclei, it is more relevant to calculate the decay width by averaging over the different possible orientations of the participating deformed nucleus, rather than considering the corresponding non-compact optimum orientation.

Single universal curve for Alpha decay derived from semi-microscopic calculations

The universal curve is one of the simple ways to get preliminary information about the Alpha-decay half-life times of heavy nuclei. We try to find parameterization for the universal curve of Alpha decay based on semi-microscopic calculations, starting from the realistic M3Y-Reid nucleon-nucleon interaction. Within the deformed density-dependent cluster model, the penetration probability and the assault frequency are calculated using the WKB penetration probability. The deformations of daughter nuclei and the ground-state spin and parity of the involved nuclei are considered. We found that it is accurate enough to express the assault frequency, for all studied decays, either as a function of the mass number of the parent nuclei or as a constant average value. The average preformation probability of the Alpha cluster inside four groups of 166 even(Z)-even(N), 117 odd-even, 141 even-odd, and 72 odd-odd Alpha-emitters are obtained, individually. The effect of participating unpaired nucleons in the involved nuclei, as well as the influence of any differences in their ground-state spin and/or parity, appears in the obtained average values of the preformation probability. Based on the calculated WKB penetration probability, we suggested a single universal curve for Alpha decay, with only one parameter. This parameter varies according to the classified four groups. It includes the preformation probability and the average assault frequency, in addition to the pairing contribution.
