Search for axion-like particles decaying to two photons at Belle II

Axion-like particles (ALPs) are predicted in many extensions of the Standard Model and provide a well-motivated portal between visible and hidden sectors through their coupling to photons. We search for ALPs produced in the process $e^{+}e^{-}\toγa$, $a\toγγ$, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $408~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ recorded by the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. Events containing three photons are used to reconstruct the ALP as a narrow peak in the di-photon invariant mass spectrum over the range $0.17 < m_{a} < 9.80~\mathrm{GeV}/c^{2}$. No significant excess above background is observed. We set 95\% confidence level upper limits on the production cross section and on the ALP-photon coupling $g_{aγγ}$, reaching sensitivities at the level of $10^{-4}~\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$. The limits are the most restrictive to date over nearly the entire mass range $0.17 < m_{a} < 5.00~\mathrm{GeV}/c^{2}$, and improve upon previous results by up to a factor 9.

Searches for charged-lepton-flavor violation in $χ_{bJ}(1P)$ decays

We report the first searches for charged-lepton-flavor violation in decays of $χ_{bJ}(1P)$ ($J=0, 1,$ and $2$) to a pair of charged leptons using 158 million $Υ(2S)$ decays collected with the Belle detector in $e^+e^-$ collisions at the KEKB collider. No significant signal is observed, and we set upper limits on the branching fractions for $χ_{bJ}(1P)$ decays to $e^\pmμ^\mp$ at the level of $10^{-6}$ and to $e^\pmτ^\mp$ or $μ^\pmτ^\mp$ at the level of $10^{-5}$. Limits on $χ_{b0}(1P)$ decays are translated into bounds on the corresponding Wilson coefficients of scalar operators that mediate charged-lepton-flavor violation.

Observation and branching fraction measurements of $J/ψ\to p \bar p K^0_S K^0_S$ and $ψ(3686) \to p \bar p K^0_S K^0_S$

Using $(10.087\pm0.044)\times10^9$ $J/ψ$ events and $(2.712\pm0.014)\times10^9$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, we report the first observation of the hadronic decays of $J/ψ\to p \bar p K^0_S K^0_S$ and $ψ(3686) \to p \bar p K^0_S K^0_S$, both with statistical significance greater than $10σ$. Their branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p \bar p K^0_S K^0_S)=(1.60 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.09)\times10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686) \to p \bar p K^0_S K^0_S)=(3.93 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.34)\times10^{-6}$. The ratio of their branching fractions is $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686) \to p \bar p K^0_S K^0_S)/\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p \bar p K^0_S K^0_S)=(24.6 \pm 1.5 \pm 2.1)\%$, which deviates from theoretical expectation by 4.6$σ$. Here the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. We have also examined the $p\bar p$ invariant mass distributions in these decays, and no significant enhancement around the $p \bar p$ near threshold is found.

First measurement of the masses of the $Υ_1(1D)$ and $Υ_3(1D)$ states and the energy dependence of the cross sections for $e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)η$ and $e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)π^+π^-$

We study the processes $e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)η$ and $e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)π^+π^-$ at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$=(10.73 -- 11.02) GeV using a $142.5\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ data sample, including 122~fb$^{-1}$ near the $Υ$(10860) peak ($\sqrt{s}$ = 10.866 GeV), collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. From the peak sample, the products of Born cross section times branching fraction are obtained for $σ_{\rm Born}(e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)η)$ or $σ_{\rm Born}(e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)π^+π^-)$ and ${\cal B}(Υ_J(1D)\toχ_{b1}γ)$ or ${\cal B}(Υ_J(1D)\toχ_{b2}γ)$ for each $Υ_J(1D)$ state. The corresponding branching fractions for $Υ(10860)$ decays are also obtained. The significances of the $Υ_1(1D)$, $Υ_2(1D)$, and $Υ_3(1D)$ signals are 4.8$σ$, ${>}10σ$, and 3.0$σ$, respectively, including systematic uncertainties. The mass for $Υ_2(1D)$ is measured to be $(10167.0\pm 1.0\pm 0.2)$ MeV/$c^2$, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic. The mass splittings $Δm_{12}=m(Υ_2(1D))-m(Υ_1(1D))$ and $Δm_{23}=m(Υ_3(1D))-m(Υ_2(1D))$ are $(11.8\pm1.5\pm0.4)$ MeV/$c^2$ and $(7.6\pm2.4\pm0.6)$ MeV/$c^2$, respectively.~We determine the energy dependence of the cross sections for $e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)η$ and $e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)π^+π^-$ for the $Υ_1(1D)$, $Υ_2(1D)$, and $Υ_3(1D)$ states, combined.

Observation of $Ξ(1530)^0$ Polarization and Determination of Its Electric and Magnetic Moments in $ψ(3686)\toΞ(1530)^0\barΞ(1530)^0$

Using the data sample of $2.7\times10^9$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we present an observation of the $Ξ(1530)^0$ polarization in the decay $ψ(3686)\toΞ(1530)^0\barΞ(1530)^0$ with a significance larger than $20σ$ compared with all other tested hypotheses. The helicity amplitudes for the process $ψ(3686)\toΞ(1530)^0\barΞ(1530)^0$ and the moduli of form factors including electric charge, magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, and magnetic octupole are measured for the first time by performing an angular distribution analysis. Additionally, the polarization correlations between $Ξ(1530)^0$ and $\barΞ(1530)^0$ are measured.

Study of the $e^+e^-\to π^+π^-D_s^+D_s^-$ process from $\sqrt{s}$ = 4.42 to 4.95 GeV at BESIII

Based on $8.5~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.42 and 4.95 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we investigate the process $e^+e^-\to π^+π^-D_s^+D_s^-$. With no significant signal observed, upper limits on the Born cross sections of $e^+e^-\to π^+π^-D_s^+D_s^-$ at each energy value are determined at the 90% confidence level. Additionally, a search for intermediate charmonium-like resonances is performed in the $M(D_s^+D_s^-)$ invariant-mass spectrum, but no significant resonant structures are observed with the current statistics.

Study of $B^+ \to μ^+ ν_μ$ decays at Belle and Belle II

We report a measurement of the branching fraction for the leptonic decay $B^+\toμ^+ν_μ$. This work presents the first $B^+\toμ^+ν_μ$ result using Belle~II data, an updated Belle measurement that supersedes the previous result, and their combination, which yields the most precise search to date. The analysis is based on $1076\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of $10.58\,\mathrm{GeV}$ with the Belle and Belle~II detectors at the KEKB and SuperKEKB colliders, respectively. We measure $\mathcal{B}(B^+\toμ^+ν_μ)=(4.4\pm1.9\pm 1.0)\times10^{-7}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The observed significance relative to the background-only hypothesis is 2.4 standard deviations. We set a 90\% confidence level upper limit of $\mathcal{B}(B^+\toμ^+ν_μ)<6.7\times10^{-7}$ using a frequentist approach and a 90\% credibility level upper limit of $\mathcal{B}(B^+\toμ^+ν_μ)<7.2\times 10^{-7}$ using a Bayesian approach. These are the most stringent limits to date. The result is interpreted as an exclusion region in the parameter space of type~II and type~III two-Higgs-doublet models. We search for stable sterile neutrinos with masses $m_N\in[0,1.5]\,\mathrm{GeV}$. No signal is observed, and the resulting exclusion on the squared mixing parameter $|U_{μN}|^2$ provides improvement over previous limits. We report a measurement of the partial branching fraction of semileptonic $B\to X_u\ellν_\ell$ decays with $p_μ^B>2.2\,\mathrm{GeV}$, obtaining $Δ\mathcal{B}(B\to X_u\ellν_\ell)=(2.72\pm0.05\pm0.29)\times10^{-4}$. We present a model-dependent study of weak annihilation decays using the muon momentum spectrum. We observe a signal of 2.4 standard deviations above the background-only hypothesis in regions where the distribution resembles that of $B\to X_u\ellν_\ell$ decays.

Charged-lepton identification at Belle~II

Effective particle identification capabilities are a strategic priority for the physics program of the Belle~II experiment. We describe the algorithms used at Belle~II for identifying electrons and muons and separating them from charged hadrons. We present the performance obtained by the experiment during Run 1, which consists of 428 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at the energy-asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider SuperKEKB between 2019 and 2022 at center-of-mass energies near the mass of the $Υ(4S)$.

Study of $e^{+}e^{-}\to h^{+}h^{-}J/ψ~(h=π,~K,~p)$ via initial-state radiation at Belle~II

Using a data sample of 427.9 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle~II detector at or near the $Υ(4S)$ and $Υ(10753)$ resonances, the cross sections for $e^+e^-\to h^+h^-J/ψ$ $(h=π/K/p)$ at center-of-mass energies ranging from 3.8 GeV or the production threshold to 5.5/6.0/7.0 GeV have been measured via initial-state radiation. The cross sections for the processes $e^+e^-\to π^+π^-J/ψ$ and $e^+e^-\to K^+K^-J/ψ$ are consistent with previously published results. The cross sections for these channels obtained by combining with previous Belle results are also given. The process $e^+e^-\to p\bar p J/ψ$ is investigated for the first time. The yields are small and no significant structure is observed in the cross section versus energy. Searches for vector charmonium-like states in the $h^+h^-J/ψ$ systems, and for associated intermediate states in the $h^{\pm} J/ψ$ systems, are also presented.

First evidence of $X(3872)\toπ^0χ_{c0}(1P)$ and search for $X(3915)\toπ^0χ_{c1}(1P)$

We search for the pionic transitions $X(3872)\toπ^0χ_{cJ}(1P)$ $(J = 0,~1,~2)$ and $X(3915)\toπ^0χ_{c1}$ in $B^+\to π^0χ_{cJ}K^+$ decays using the Belle and Belle~II data samples collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance, corresponding to integrated luminosities of $711~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ and $492~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, respectively. We report the first evidence for the decay $X(3872)\toπ^0χ_{c0}$ with a significance of $3.4σ$, including systematic uncertainties. We measure the product of branching fractions ${\cal B}(B^+\to X(3872)K^+)\times{\cal B}(X(3872)\toπ^0χ_{c0})=(20.0\pm6.8\pm2.3)\times10^{-6}$ and the branching fraction ratio ${\cal B}(X(3872)\toπ^0χ_{c0})/{\cal B}(X(3872)\toπ^+π^-J/ψ)=2.3\pm0.8\pm0.4$, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The upper limits at 90\% credibility on the products of branching fractions for the $π^0χ_{c1}$ and $π^0χ_{c2}$ modes are $7.5\times10^{-6}$ and $15.3\times10^{-6}$, respectively. The corresponding upper limits on the branching fraction ratios relative to the $π^+π^-J/ψ$ decay are $0.9$ and $1.8$. The measured branching fractions for $X(3872)\toπ^0χ_{cJ}$ are consistent with several theoretical predictions based on the hadronic molecular interpretation of the $X(3872)$. No significant signal is seen for the $X(3915)\toπ^0χ_{c1}$ decay, and we set the 90\% credibility upper limit of ${\cal B}(B^+\to X(3915)K^+)\times{\cal B}(X(3915)\toπ^0χ_{c1})<6.6\times10^{-6}$, while the decays for $J=0$ and 2 are forbidden by parity conservation.

Observation of $ψ(3770)\to p\bar p$ and Measurement of Electromagnetic Form Factors of Proton at $\sqrt{s} = 3.510-4.946$ GeV

We search for possible charmonium(-like) states decaying into the $p\bar{p}$ final state by studying the Born cross sections of the $e^+e^-\to p\bar{p}$ reaction, and we determine the proton electromagnetic form factors by analyzing the proton angular distribution. The measurement is performed using a sample of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at 47 center-of-mass energies from 3.510 to 4.946 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 26 fb$^{-1}$, recorded by the BESIII detector collected at the BEPCII collider. The decay $ψ(3770)\to p\bar{p}$ is observed with a significance of 6.6$σ$ including systematic uncertainties. Furthermore, a structure near 4.2 GeV is observed with significances of $4.6σ$ or $4.8σ$ for the $ψ(4160)$ or $Y(4230)$ hypotheses including systematic uncertainties, respectively; these interpretations cannot presently be distinguished. In addition, the moduli of the form factor ratios $|G_{E}/G_{M}|$ and of the magnetic form factors $|G_{M}|$ are extracted by analyzing the proton polar angle distribution with higher precision at large time-like squared momentum transfer. These results provide important experimental insights into both the decay mechanisms of charmonium(-like) states in the open charm region and the internal structure of proton.

Measurement of Born cross sections for $e^+e^-\to p\bar p$ at $\sqrt{s} =3.510-4.946$ GeV

We report a measurement of the Born cross section and the effective form factor for the $e^+e^-\to p\bar{p}$ reaction at 47 center-of-mass energies between 3.510 and 4.946 GeV. The measurement is performed using the energy-scan technique and is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 26 fb\(^{-1}\) collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. For the first time, the moduli of the electromagnetic form factor ratio $|G_{E}/G_{M}|$ and of the magnetic form factor $|G_{M}|$ are determined with high precision by analyzing the distribution of the polar angle of the proton at a large timelike momentum transfer. These results provide essential insights into the nature of charmonium(-like) states above the open-charm threshold and the dynamics underlying the proton electromagnetic form factors.

Search for the charged lepton flavor violating decay $η\to e^{\pm}μ^{\mp}$

No signal is observed, and an upper limit on the branching fraction is determined to be $\mathcal{B}(η\to e^{\pm}μ^{\mp}) < 6.8 \times 10^{-7}$ at the 90\% confidence level. This result improves the previous best limit by one order of magnitude.

Measurement of mixing-induced CP violation in the decay $B^0 \to π^0 π^0$

Measurements of charge-parity (CP) violation in quark transitions provide stringent tests of the current theory and sensitive probes of particles or interactions beyond it. We report the first measurement of mixing-induced CP violation in $B^0\toπ^0π^0$ decays. The measurement uses 190 million $Υ(4S)\to B^{0}\overline{B}{}^0$ events collected with the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. A new approach that exploits the quantum entanglement of the $B^{0}\overline{B}{}^0$ pair enables a decay-time-dependent analysis without reconstructing the $B^0 \to π^0π^0$ decay position. We measure the mixing-induced CP-violating coefficient to be $S_{π^{0}π^{0}} = 0.61^{+0.75}_{-0.79}\,(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.11\,(\mathrm{syst})$, attaining a precision that would require a data set twenty times as large with a conventional analysis. We also measure the direct CP-violating coefficient to be $C_{π^{0}π^{0}} = 0.05 \pm 0.28\,(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.07\,(\mathrm{syst})$. These results substantially improve the constraints from $B \to ππ$ decays on the CP-violating phase $ϕ_2$ of the quark-mixing matrix using far less data than had previously been assumed necessary.

Observation of the radiative decay $D_s (2317)^+ \to D_s^* γ$

We observe the radiative decay $D^{*}_{s0}(2317)^{+} \to D_{s}^{*+} γ$ for the first time, with a significance exceeding $10$ standard deviations. The signal is found in the continuum $e^+ e^- \to c\bar{c}$ process with the combined data samples of 980.4~$\rm fb^{-1}$ and 427.9~$\rm fb^{-1}$ collected by the Belle and Belle~II detectors operating at the KEKB and SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ colliders, respectively. The branching fraction ratio ${\cal B}(D^{*}_{s0}(2317)^{+} \to D_{s}^{*+} γ)/{\cal B}(D^{*}_{s0}(2317)^{+} \to D_{s}^{+} π^{0})$ is measured to be $[7.13 \pm 0.70({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.23({\rm syst.})]\%$. This result provides significant new experimental input for the determination of the quark structure of the $D^{*}_{s0}(2317)^{+}$, which remains unknown.

Observation of an Altered $a_{0}(980)$ Line shape in $D^{+} \rightarrow π^{+}ηη$

Using $20.3~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected with the BESIII detector at $\sqrt{s}=3.773~{\rm GeV}$, we perform the first amplitude analysis of the decay $D^+\toπ^+ηη$. The intermediate process $D^+\to a_0(980)^+η$, $a_0(980)^+\toπ^+η$, is observed as the only significant component in the amplitude analysis, and its branching fraction is measured to be $(3.67\pm0.12_{\rm stat}\pm0.06_{\rm syst})\times10^{-3}$. The $π^+η$ mass spectrum associated with $a_0(980)^+η$ production exhibits a line shape that differs substantially from those observed in $D_{(s)}\to a_0(980)π$ and $D^0\to a_0(980)^-e^+ν_e$ decays. We examine several conventional descriptions of the $a_0(980)$ amplitude, including Flatté, dispersively modified Flatté, $T$-matrix, and $K$-matrix parameterizations. With reference $a_0(980)$ parameters, neither these models nor their extensions including additional small resonant or non-resonant amplitudes reproduce the observed line shape satisfactorily. When the $a_0(980)$ parameters are allowed to float, satisfactory fits can be obtained, but the pole mass is driven well above the $K\bar K$ threshold, inconsistent with the near-threshold character of the $a_0(980)$. The results reveal a tension between fit quality and the physical pole position in conventional direct-production amplitude models.

First Experimental Constraint on the Scalar Current in the $D^{0(+)}\to \bar K\ell^+ν_{\ell}$ Transition

Using 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data taken at the center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=3.773$ GeV, we report the first experimental constraint on the scalar current in the $D^{0(+)}\to \bar K\ell^+ν_{\ell}$ transitions, based on a simultaneous fit to the first measured forward-backward asymmetries and precisely determined partial decay rates. The parameters of the scalar current are determined to be ${\rm Re}(c_S^μ)=0.017\pm0.008_{\rm stat}\pm0.006_{\rm syst}$ and ${\rm Im}(c_S^μ)=\pm(0.077\pm0.011_{\rm stat}\pm0.009_{\rm syst})$, which deviates from the SM by a significance of $2.3σ$. The branching fractions of $D^{0(+)}\to \bar K\ell^+ν_\ell$, the hadronic form factor $f_+(0)$, and the modulus of the $c\to s$ CKM matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ are also determined with improved precision. In addition, lepton flavor universality is tested via the ratios of the decay rates between semi-muonic and semi-electronic decays in the full momentum transfer range and in subranges.

Precise measurements of $D^0 \to K^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ and $D^+ \to \bar K^0\ell^+ν_\ell$ decays

Using $e^+e^-$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$, collected at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we present precise measurements of $D^0 \to K^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ and $D^+ \to \bar K^0\ell^+ν_\ell$ ($\ell=e,μ$) decays. The branching fractions of $D^0\to K^-e^+ν_e$, $D^0\to K^-μ^+ν_μ$, $D^+\to \bar K^0e^+ν_e$, and $D^+\to \bar K^0μ^+ν_μ$ are measured to be $(3.548\pm0.006_{\rm stat}\pm0.017_{\rm syst}) \%$, $(3.445\pm0.007_{\rm stat}\pm0.017_{\rm syst}) \%$, $(8.928\pm0.025_{\rm stat}\pm0.050_{\rm syst}) \%$, and $(8.770\pm0.029_{\rm stat}\pm0.053_{\rm syst}) \%$, respectively. The partial decay rates of these four decays are measured with improved precision, and their forward-backward asymmetries are determined for the first time. By performing a simultaneous fit to the measured partial decay rates and the forward-backward asymmetries of $D \to \bar K\ell^+ν_{\ell}$, a search for a possible scalar current contribution in the $c\to s\ell^+ν_{\ell}$ transition is performed. The results are ${\rm Re}(c_S^μ)=0.017\pm0.008_{\rm stat}\pm0.006_{\rm syst}$ and ${\rm Im}(c_S^μ)=\pm(0.077\pm0.011_{\rm stat}\pm0.009_{\rm syst})$, corresponding to a difference from the SM with a significance of $2.3σ$. The product of the form factor $f_+(0)$ and the modulus of the $c\to s$ Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ is determined to be $f_+(0)|V_{cs}|=0.7183\pm0.0007_{\rm stat}\pm0.0014_{\rm syst}$. With the inputs $|V_{cs}|=0.97349\pm0.00016$ from the Standard Model global fit or $\ffK=0.7452\pm0.0031$ from the lattice quantum chromodynamics calculation, we derive $f_+(0)=0.7383\pm0.0007_{\rm stat}\pm0.0014_{\rm syst}$ and $|V_{cs}|=0.9639\pm0.0009_{\rm stat}\pm0.0018_{\rm syst}\pm0.0040_{\rm LQCD}$.
