Programmable CMOS DAC Operating in Cryogenic Environments for Controlling Superconducting Qubits

This paper presents the design and test results of a CMOS current-based Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) that operates at cryogenic temperatures and that can be used to precisely control the amount of flux coupled to qubits or that can be used in the readout of superconducting circuits. The current pulse output can be controlled in terms of its amplitude, rise and fall slopes, via digital controls, and pulse width, via external triggers, while driving a superconducting circuit. The design has been implemented in a planar 90 nm CMOS process and test results closely match circuit predictions. The solution's wide degree of digital tunability affords potential application of the same device to many types of quantum circuits, beyond those discussed here. Due to the wide-ranging flexibility of digital CMOS control, we envision that this DAC design will enable the next generation of high-fidelity cryo-CMOS control architectures for superconducting qubits.

Predicting the Properties of the Remnants of Dissipative Galaxy Mergers

We construct a physically motivated model for predicting the properties of the remnants of gaseous galaxy mergers, given the properties of the progenitors and the orbit. The model is calibrated using a large suite of SPH merger simulations. It implements generalized energy conservation while accounting for dissipative energy losses and star formation. The dissipative effects are evaluated from the initial gas fractions and from the orbital parameters via an "impulse" parameter, which characterizes the strength of the encounter. Given the progenitor properties, the model predicts the remnant stellar mass, half-mass radius, and velocity dispersion to an accuracy of 25%. The model is valid for both major and minor mergers. We provide an explicit recipe for semi-analytic models of galaxy formation.

Current induced magnetization dynamics in current perpendicular to the plane spin valves

We observe magnetization dynamics induced by spin momentum transfer in the noise spectra of current perpendicular to the plane giant magnetoresistance spin valves. The dynamics are observable only for those combinations of current direction and magnetic configuration in which spin transfer acts to reorient the free layer magnetization away from the direction set by the net magnetic field. Detailed measurements as a function of magnetic configuration reveal an evolution of the noise spectra, going from a spectrum with a well-defined noise peak when the free layer is roughly collinear with the pinned layer to a spectrum dominated by 1/f noise when the free layer is in an orthogonal configuration. Finally, the amplitude of the corresponding resistance noise increases rapidly with increasing current until it saturates at a value that is a substantial fraction of the magnetoresistance between parallel and antiparallel states.

Spin momentum transfer in current perpendicular to the plane spin valves

We present experimental and numerical micromagnetic data on the effect of spin momentum transfer in current perpendicular to the plane spin valves. Starting from a configuration with orthogonal free and pinned layer magnetizations, the free layer magnetization exhibits abrupt current induced switching that is qualitatively consistent with the spin torque model. When operating the spin valve as a field sensor, spin transfer can produce a change in resistance that mimics an effective magnetic field and induce magnetic instability that requires a larger bias field in order to stabilize the device.
