Mapping the Quasar Main Sequence in the UV range: A Connection with the UV Fe III Emission

The quasar main sequence (MS) provides a consistent unification scheme for type I AGNs. This framework, constructed from the relative flux between the optical emissions $\mathrm{H}β$ and $\mathrm{Fe\,II\,(\lambda4570)}$, and the $\mathrm{FWHM(Hβ)}$, organizes quasars into two populations (B, A) and the subpopulation xA, which typically consists of highly accreting sources. We explored the use of the UV 1900 blend emissions ($\mathrm{Al\,III}\,\mathrmλ1860$, $\mathrm{Si\,III]}\,\mathrmλ1892$, $\mathrm{C\,III]}\,\mathrmλ1909$) and the $\mathrm{Fe\,III}$ and $\mathrm{Fe\,II}$ transitions between 1700 and 2200 Angstrom as tracers of this main sequence. We fitted these emissions for a sample of 69 low-$z$ ($z\lesssim0.8$) quasars observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) that had available optical measurements, enabling a direct comparison with the optical quasar main sequence. We found a UV plane defined by $\mathrm{FWHM}(\mathrm{Al\,III})$ and the equivalent width of the combined emissions of $\mathrm{Fe\,III}$ and $\mathrm{Fe\,II}$. The plane defined by these parameters mirrors the quasar main sequence in the optical regime and shows a clear distinction between the different populations. The plane also enables the identification of xA sources with high completeness but a non-negligible rate of false positives. Our results suggest that the UV iron emission around the 1900 blend could be used to trace the quasar main sequence trend, offering an alternative way to study this scheme at high redshift.

Increasing GP Computing Power via Volunteer Computing

This paper describes how it is possible to increase GP Computing Power via Volunteer Computing (VC) using the BOINC framework. Two experiments using well-known GP tools -Lil-gp & ECJ- are performed in order to demonstrate the benefit of using VC in terms of computing power and speed up. Finally we present an extension of the model where any GP tool or framework can be used inside BOINC regardless of its programming language, complexity or required operating system.

Amalgamated products and properly 3-realizable groups

In this paper, we show that the class of all properly 3-realizable groups is closed under amalgamated free products (and HNN-extensions) over finite groups. We recall that $G$ is said to be properly 3-realizable if there exists a compact 2-polyhedron $K$ with $π_1(K) \cong G$ and whose universal cover $\tilde{K}$ has the proper homotopy type of a 3-manifold (with boundary).

Self-consistent Overhauser model for the pair distribution function of an electron gas at finite temperature

We present calculations of the spin-averaged pair distribution function $g(r)$ in a homogeneous gas of electrons moving in dimensionality D=3 or D=2 at finite temperature. The model involves the solution of a two-electron scattering problem via an effective potential which embodies many-body effects through a self-consistent Hartree approximation, leading to two-body wave functions to be averaged over a temperature-dependent distribution of relative momentum for electron pairs. We report illustrative numerical results for $g(r)$ in an intermediate-coupling regime and interpret them in terms of changes of short-range order with increasing temperature.
