Quantum revivals in HgTe/CdTe quantum wells and topological phase transitions

The time evolution of a wave packet is a tool to detect topological phase transitions in two-dimensional Dirac materials, such as graphene and silicene. Here we extend the analysis to HgTe/CdTe quantum wells and study the evolution of their electron current wave packet, using 2D effective Dirac Hamiltonians and different layer thicknesses. We show that the two different periodicities that appear in this temporal evolution reach a minimum near the critical thickness, where the system goes from normal to inverted regime. Moreover, the maximum of the electron current amplitude changes with the layer thickness, identifying that current maxima reach their higher value at the critical thickness. Thus, we can characterize the topological phase transitions in terms of the periodicity and amplitude of the electron currents.

Faraday rotation and transmittance as markers of topological phase transitions in 2D materials

We analyze the magneto-optical conductivity (and related magnitudes like transmittance and Faraday rotation of the irradiated polarized light) of some elemental two-dimensional Dirac materials of group IV (graphene analogues, buckled honeycomb lattices, like silicene, germanene, stannane, etc.), group V (phosphorene), and zincblende heterostructures (like HgTe/CdTe quantum wells) near the Dirac and gamma points, under out-of-plane magnetic and electric fields, to characterize topological-band insulator phase transitions and their critical points. We provide plots of the Faraday angle and transmittance as a function of the polarized light frequency, for different external electric and magnetic fields, chemical potential, HgTe layer thickness and temperature, to tune the material magneto-optical properties. We have shown that absortance/transmittance acquires extremal values at the critical point, where the Faraday angle changes sign, thus providing fine markers of the topological phase transition. In the case of non-topological materials as phosphorene, a minimum of the transmittance is also observed due to the energy gap closing by an external electric field.

Role of mixed permutation symmetry sectors in the thermodynamic limit of critical three-level Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick atom models

We introduce the notion of Mixed Symmetry Quantum Phase Transition (MSQPT) as singularities in the transformation of the lowest-energy state properties of a system of identical particles inside each permutation symmetry sector $\mu$, when some Hamiltonian control parameters $\lambda$ are varied. We use a three-level Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model, with $U(3)$ dynamical symmetry, to exemplify our construction. After reviewing the construction of $U(3)$ unirreps using Young tableaux and Gelfand basis, we firstly study the case of a finite number $N$ of three-level atoms, showing that some precursors (fidelity-susceptibility, level population, etc.) of MSQPTs appear in all permutation symmetry sectors. Using coherent (quasi-classical) states of $U(3)$ as variational states, we compute the lowest-energy density for each sector $\mu$ in the thermodynamic $N\to\infty$ limit. Extending the control parameter space by $\mu$, the phase diagram exhibits four distinct quantum phases in the $\lambda$-$\mu$ plane that coexist at a quadruple point. The ground state of the whole system belongs to the fully symmetric sector $\mu=1$ and shows a four-fold degeneracy, due to the spontaneous breakdown of the parity symmetry of the Hamiltonian. The restoration of this discrete symmetry leads to the formation of four-component Schr\"odinger cat states.

Hilbert space structure of the low energy sector of U(N) quantum Hall ferromagnets and their classical limit

Using the Lieb-Mattis ordering theorem of electronic energy levels, we identify the Hilbert space of the low energy sector of U($N$) quantum Hall/Heisenberg ferromagnets at filling factor $M$ for $L$ Landau/lattice sites with the carrier space of irreducible representations of U($N$) described by rectangular Young tableaux of $M$ rows and $L$ columns, and associated with Grassmannian phase spaces U($N$)/U($M$)$\times$U($N-M$). We embed this $N$-component fermion mixture in Fock space through a Schwinger-Jordan (boson and fermion) representation of U($N$)-spin operators. We provide different realizations of basis vectors using Young diagrams, Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns and Fock states (for an electron/flux occupation number in the fermionic/bosonic representation). U($N$)-spin operator matrix elements in the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis are explicitly given. Coherent state excitations above the ground state are computed and labeled by complex $(N-M)\times M$ matrix points $Z$ on the Grassmannian phase space. They adopt the form of a U($N$) displaced/rotated highest-weight vector, or a multinomial Bose-Einstein condensate in the flux occupation number representation. Replacing U($N$)-spin operators by their expectation values in a Grassmannian coherent state allows for a semi-classical treatment of the low energy (long wavelength) U($N$)-spin-wave coherent excitations (skyrmions) of U($N$) quantum Hall ferromagnets in terms of Grasmannian nonlinear sigma models.

Massive conformal particles with non-Abelian charges from free U(2N,2N)-twistor dynamics: quantization and coherent states

The inclusion of non-Abelian U(N) internal charges (other than the electric charge) into Twistor Theory is accomplished through the concept of "colored twistors" (ctwistors for short) transforming under the colored conformal symmetry U(2N,2N). In particular, we are interested in 2N-ctwistors describing colored spinless conformal massive particles with phase space U(2N,2N)/[U(2N)xU(2N)]. Penrose formulas for incidence relations are generalized to N>1. We propose U(2N)-gauge invariant Lagrangians for 2N-ctwistors and we quantize them through a bosonic representation, interpreting quantum states as particle-hole excitations above the ground state. The connection between the corresponding Hilbert (Fock-like with constraints) space and the carrier space of a discrete series representation of U(2N,2N) is established through a coherent space (holomorphic) representation.

Husimi function and phase-space analysis of bilayer quantum Hall systems at $\nu=2/\lambda$

We propose localization measures in phase space of the ground state of bilayer quantum Hall (BLQH) systems at fractional filling factors $\nu=2/\lambda$, to characterize the three quantum phases (shortly denoted by spin, canted and ppin) for arbitrary $U(4)$-isospin $\lambda$. We use a coherent state (Bargmann) representation of quantum states, as holomorphic functions in the 8-dimensional Grassmannian phase-space $\mathbb{G}^4_{2}=U(4)/[U(2)\times U(2)]$ (a higher-dimensional generalization of the Haldane's 2-dimensional sphere $\mathbb{S}^2=U(2)/[U(1)\times U(1)]$). We quantify the localization (inverse volume) of the ground state wave function in phase-space throughout the phase diagram (i.e., as a function of Zeeman, tunneling, layer distance, etc, control parameters) with the Husimi function second moment, a kind of inverse participation ratio that behaves as an order parameter. Then we visualize the different ground state structure in phase space of the three quantum phases, the canted phase displaying a much higher delocalization (a Schr\"odinger cat structure) than the spin and ppin phases, where the ground state is highly coherent. We find a good agreement between analytic (variational) and numeric diagonalization results.

Band inversion at critical magnetic fields in a silicene quantum dot

We have found out that the band inversion in a silicene quantum dot (QD), in perpendicular magnetic $B$ and electric $\Delta_z$ fields, drastically depends on the strength of the magnetic field. We study the energy spectrum of the silicene QD where the electric field provides a tunable band gap $\Delta$. Boundary conditions introduce chirality, so that negative and positive angular momentum $m$ zero Landau level (ZLL) edge states show a quite different behavior regarding the band-inversion mechanism underlying the topological insulator transition. We show that, whereas some ZLLs suffer band inversion at $\Delta=0$ for any $B>0$, other ZLLs only suffer band inversion above critical values of the magnetic field at nonzero values of the gap.

Hilbert space and ground state structure of bilayer quantum Hall systems at $\nu=2/\lambda$

We analyze the Hilbert space and ground state structure of bilayer quantum Hall (BLQH) systems at fractional filling factors $\nu=2/\lambda$ ($\lambda$ odd) and we also study the large $SU(4)$ isospin-$\lambda$ limit. The model Hamiltonian is an adaptation of the $\nu=2$ case [Z.F. Ezawa {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. {B71} (2005) 125318] to the many-body situation (arbitrary $\lambda$ flux quanta per electron). The semiclassical regime and quantum phase diagram (in terms of layer distance, Zeeeman, tunneling, etc, control parameters) is obtained by using previously introduced Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}^4_{2}=U(4)/[U(2)\times U(2)]$ coherent states as variational states. The existence of three quantum phases (spin, canted and ppin) is common to any $\lambda$, but the phase transition points depend on $\lambda$, and the instance $\lambda=1$ is recovered as a particular case. We also analyze the quantum case through a numerical diagonalization of the Hamiltonian and compare with the mean-field results, which give a good approximation in the spin and ppin phases but not in the canted phase, where we detect exactly $\lambda$ energy level crossings between the ground and first excited state for given values of the tunneling gap. An energy band structure at low and high interlayer tunneling (spin and ppin phases, respectively) also appears depending on angular momentum and layer population imbalance quantum numbers.

Inverse participation ratio and localization in topological insulator phase transitions

Fluctuations of Hamiltonian eigenfunctions, measured by the inverse participation ratio (IPR), turn out to characterize topological-band insulator transitions occurring in 2D Dirac materials like silicene, which is isostructural with graphene but with a strong spin-orbit interaction. Using monotonic properties of the IPR, as a function of a perpendicular electric field (which provides a tunable band gap), we define topological-like quantum numbers that take different values in the topological-insulator and band-insulator phases.

Identifying topological-band insulator transitions in silicene and other 2D gapped Dirac materials by means of R\'enyi-Wehrl entropy

We propose a new method to identify transitions from a topological insulator to a band insulator in silicene (the silicon equivalent of graphene) in the presence of perpendicular magnetic and electric fields, by using the R\'enyi-Wehrl entropy of the quantum state in phase space. Electron-hole entropies display an inversion/crossing behavior at the charge neutrality point for any Landau level, and the combined entropy of particles plus holes turns out to be maximum at this critical point. The result is interpreted in terms of delocalization of the quantum state in phase space. The entropic description presented in this work will be valid in general 2D gapped Dirac materials, with a strong intrinsic spin-orbit interaction, isoestructural with silicene.

The Husimi distribution, the Wehrl entropy and the superradiant phase in spin-boson interactions

We study the Husimi distribution of the ground state in the Dicke model of field-matter interactions to visualize the quantum phase transition, from normal to superradiant, in phase-space. We follow an exact numerical and variational analysis, without making use of the usual Holstein-Primakoff approximation. We find that Wehrl entropy of the Husimi distribution provides an indicator of the sharp change of symmetry trough the critical point. Additionally, we note that the zeros of the Husimi distribution characterize the Dicke model quantum phase transition.

Parity-symmetry-adapted coherent states and entanglement in quantum phase transitions of vibron models

We propose coherent (`Schr\"odinger catlike') states adapted to the parity symmetry providing a remarkable variational description of the ground and first excited states of vibron models for finite-($N$)-size molecules. Vibron models undergo a quantum shape phase transition (from linear to bent) at a critical value $\xi_c$ of a control parameter. These trial cat states reveal a sudden increase of vibration-rotation entanglement linear ($L$) and von Neumann ($S$) entropies from zero to $L^{(N)}_{\rm cat}(\xi)\simeq 1-{2}/{\sqrt{\pi N}}$ [to be compared with $L^{(N)}_{\rm max.}(\xi)=1-{1}/{(N+1)}$] and $S^{(N)}_{\rm cat}(\xi)\simeq \frac{1}{2} \log_2(N+1)$, respectively, above the critical point, $\xi>\xi_c$, in agreement with exact numerical calculations. We also compute inverse participation ratios, for which these cat states capture a sudden delocalization of the ground state wave packet across the critical point. Analytic expressions for entanglement entropies and inverse participation ratios of variational states, as functions of $N$ and $\xi$, are given in terms of hypergeometric functions.

Husimi distribution and phase space analysis of Dicke model quantum phase transition

The Husimi distribution is proposed for a phase space analysis of quantum phase transitions in the Dicke model of spin-boson interactions. We show that the inverse participation ratio and Wehrl entropy of the Husimi distribution give sharp signatures of the quantum phase transition. The analysis has been done using two frameworks: a numerical treatment and an analytical variational approximation. Additionally we have proposed a new characterization of the Dicke model quantum phase transition by means of the zeros of the Husimi distribution in the variational approach.

Husimi distribution and phase-space analysis of a vibron-model quantum phase transition

The Husimi distribution is proposed for a phase space analysis of quantum phase transitions in the two-dimensional $U(3)$ vibron model for $N$-size molecules. We show that the inverse participation ratio and Wehrl's entropy of the Husimi distribution give sharp signatures of the quantum (shape) phase transition from linear to bent. Numerical results are complemented with a variational approach using parity-symmetry-adapted $U(3)$ coherent states, which reach the minimum Wehrl entropy $\frac{N(3+2N)}{(N+1)(N+2)}$, in the rigidly linear phase, according to a generalized Wehrl-Lieb conjecture. We also propose a characterization of the vibron-model quantum phase transition by means of the zeros of the Husimi distribution.

On the oscillator realization of conformal U(2,2) quantum particles and their particle-hole coherent states

We revise the unireps. of $U(2,2)$ describing conformal particles with continuous mass spectrum from a many-body perspective, which shows massive conformal particles as compounds of two correlated massless particles. The statistics of the compound (boson/fermion) depends on the helicity $h$ of the massless components (integer/half-integer). Coherent states (CS) of particle-hole pairs ("excitons") are also explicitly constructed as the exponential action of exciton (non-canonical) creation operators on the ground state of unpaired particles. These CS are labeled by points $Z$ ($2\times 2$ complex matrices) on the Cartan-Bergman domain $\mathbb D_4=U(2,2)/U(2)^2$, and constitute a generalized (matrix) version of Perelomov $U(1,1)$ coherent states labeled by points $z$ on the unit disk $\mathbb D_1=U(1,1)/U(1)^2$. Firstly we follow a geometric approach to the construction of CS, orthonormal basis, $U(2,2)$ generators and their matrix elements and symbols in the reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathcal H_\lambda(\mathbb D_4)$ of analytic square-integrable holomorphic functions on $\mathbb D_4$, which carries a unitary irreducible representation of $U(2,2)$ with index $\lambda\in\mathbb N$ (the conformal or scale dimension). Then we introduce a many-body representation of the previous construction through an oscillator realization of the $U(2,2)$ Lie algebra generators in terms of eight boson operators with constraints. This particle picture allows us for a physical interpretation of our abstract mathematical construction in the many-body jargon. In particular, the index $\lambda$ is related to the number $2(\lambda-2)$ of unpaired quanta and to the helicity $h=(\lambda-2)/2$ of each massless particle forming the massive compound.

Searching for pairing energies in phase space

We obtain a representation of pairing energies in phase space, for the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick and general boson Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairing models. This is done by means of a probability distribution of the quantum state in phase space. In fact, we prove a correspondence between the points at which this probability distribution vanishes and the pairing energies. In principle, the vanishing of this probability distribution is experimentally accessible and additionally gives a method to visualize pairing energies across the model control parameter space. This result opens new ways to experimentally approach quantum pairing systems.

Interlayer coherence and entanglement in bilayer quantum Hall states at filling factor $\nu=2/\lambda$

We study coherence and entanglement properties of the state space of a composite bi-fermion (two electrons pierced by $\lambda$ magnetic flux lines) at one Landau site of a bilayer quantum Hall system. In particular, interlayer imbalance and entanglement (and its fluctuations) are analyzed for a set of $U(4)$ coherent (\emph{quasiclassical}) states generalizing the standard pseudospin $U(2)$ coherent states for the spin-frozen case. The interplay between spin and pseudospin degrees of freedom opens new possibilities with regard to the spin-frozen case. Actually, spin degrees of freedom make interlayer entanglement more effective and robust under perturbations than in the spin-frozen situation, mainly for a large number of flux quanta $\lambda$. Interlayer entanglement of an equilibrium thermal state and its dependence with temperature and bias voltage is also studied for a pseudo-Zeeman interaction.
