Discontinuous solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations versus Radon measure-valued solutions of scalar conservation laws: Disappearance of singularities

Let $H$ be a bounded and Lipschitz continuous function. We consider discontinuous viscosity solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation $U_{t}+H(U_x)=0$ and signed Radon measure valued entropy solutions of the conservation law $u_{t}+[H(u)]_x=0$. After having proved a precise statement of the formal relation $U_x=u$, we establish estimates for the (strictly positive!) times at which singularities of the solutions disappear. Here singularities are jump discontinuities in case of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and signed singular measures in case of the conservation law.

Signed Radon measure-valued solutions of flux saturated scalar conservation laws

We prove existence and uniqueness for a class of signed Radon measure-valued entropy solutions of the Cauchy problem for a first order scalar hyperbolic conservation law in one space dimension. The initial data of the problem is a finite superposition of Dirac masses, whereas the flux is Lipschitz continuous and bounded. The solution class is determined by an additional condition which is needed to prove uniqueness.

Discontinuous viscosity solutions of first order Hamilton-Jacobi equations

We consider the simplest example of a time-dependent first order Hamilton-Jacobi equation, in one space dimension and with a bounded and Lipschitz continuous Hamiltonian which only depends on the spatial derivative. We show that if the initial function has a finite number of jump discontinuities, the corresponding discontinuous viscosity solution of the corresponding Cauchy problem on the real line is unique. Uniqueness follows from a comparison theorem for semicontinuous viscosity sub- and supersolutions, using the barrier effect of spatial discontinuities of a solution. We also prove an existence theorem, as well as a comparison theorem for viscosity solutions with different initial data. In addition, we describe several properties of the evolution of the jump discontinuities.

Self-Similar Intermediate Asymptotics for a Degenerate Parabolic Filtration-Absorption Equation

The equation $$ \partial_tu=u\partial^2_{xx}u-(c-1)(\partial_xu)^2 $$ is known in literature as a qualitative mathematical model of some biological phenomena. Here this equation is derived as a model of the groundwater flow in a water absorbing fissurized porous rock, therefore we refer to this equation as a filtration-absorption equation. A family of self-similar solutions to this equation is constructed. Numerical investigation of the evolution of non-self-similar solutions to the Cauchy problems having compactly supported initial conditions is performed. Numerical experiments indicate that the self-similar solutions obtained represent intermediate asymptotics of a wider class of solutions when the influence of details of the initial conditions disappears but the solution is still far from the ultimate state: identical zero. An open problem caused by the nonuniqueness of the solution of the Cauchy problem is discussed.
