Modular discretization of the AdS2/CFT1 Holography

We propose a finite discretization for the black hole geometry and dynamics. We realize our proposal, in the case of extremal black holes, for which the radial and temporal near horizon geometry is known to be AdS$_2=SL(2,\mathbb{R})/SO(1,1,\mathbb{R})$. We implement its discretization by replacing the set of real numbers $\mathbb{R}$ with the set of integers modulo $N$, with AdS$_2$ going over to the finite geometry AdS$_2[N]=SL(2,\mathbb{Z}_N)/SO(1,1,\mathbb{Z}_N)$. We model the dynamics of the microscopic degrees of freedom by generalized Arnol'd cat maps, ${\sf A}\in SL(2,\mathbb{Z}_N)$, which are isometries of the geometry at both the classical and quantum levels. These exhibit well studied properties of strong arithmetic chaos, dynamical entropy, nonlocality and factorization in the cutoff discretization $N$, which are crucial for fast quantum information processing. We construct, finally, a new kind of unitary and holographic correspondence, for AdS$_2[N]$/CFT$_1[N]$, via coherent states of both the bulk and boundary geometries.

Nambu Quantum Mechanics on Discrete 3-Tori

We propose a quantization of linear, volume preserving, maps on the discrete and finite 3-torus T_N^3 represented by elements of the group SL(3,Z_N). These flows can be considered as special motions of the Nambu dynamics (linear Nambu flows) in the three dimensional toroidal phase space and are characterized by invariant vectors, a, of T_N^3. We quantize all such flows which are necessarily restricted on a planar two-dimensional phase space, embedded in the 3-torus, transverse to the vector a . The corresponding maps belong to the little group of the vector a in SL(3,Z_N) which is an SL(2,Z_N) subgroup. The associated linear Nambu maps are generated by a pair of linear and quadratic Hamiltonians (Clebsch-Monge potentials of the flow) and the corresponding quantum maps, realize the metaplectic representation of SL(3,Z_N) on the discrete group of three dimensional magnetic translations i.e. the non-commutative 3-torus with deformation parameter the N-th root of unity. Other potential applications of our construction are related to the quantization of deterministic chaos in turbulent maps as well as to quantum tomography of three dimensional objects.

Hybrid Inflation without Flat Directions and without Primordial Black Holes

We investigate the possibility that the Universe may inflate due to moduli fields, corresponding to flat directions of supersymmetry, lifted by supergravity corrections. Using a hybrid-type potential we obtain a two-stage inflationary model. Depending on the curvature of the potential the first stage corresponds to a period of fast-roll inflation or a period of `locked' inflation, induced by an oscillating inflaton. This is followed by a second stage of fast-roll inflation. We demonstrate that these two consecutive inflationary phases result in enough total e-foldings to encompass the cosmological scales. Using natural values for the parameters (masses of order TeV and vacuum energy of the intermediate scale corresponding to gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking) we conclude that the $\eta$-problem of inflation is easily overcome. The greatest obstacle to our scenario is the possibility of copious production of cosmologically disastrous primordial black holes due to the phase transition switching from the first into the second stage of inflation. We study this problem in detail and show analytically that there is ample parameter space where these black holes do not form at all. To generate structure in the Universe we assume the presence of a curvaton field. Finally we also discuss the moduli problem and how it affects our considerations.

Rotating Toroidal Branes in Supermembrane and Matrix Theory

In the lightcone frame, where the supermembrane theory and the Matrix model are strikingly similar, the equations of motion admit an elegant complexification in even dimensional spaces. Although the explicit rotational symmetry of the target space is lost, the remaining unitary symmetries apart from providing a simple and unifying description of all known solutions suggest new ones for rotating spherical and toroidal membranes. In this framework the angular momentum is represented by U(1) charges which balance the nonlinear attractive forces of the membrane. We examine in detail a six dimensional rotating toroidal membrane solution which lives in a 3-torus, $T^3$ and admits stable radial modes. In Matrix Theory it corresponds to a toroidal N-$D_{0}$ brane bound state. We demonstrate its existence and discuss its radial stability.

Dark Energy and the quietness of the Local Hubble Flow

The linearity and quietness of the Local ($< 10 Mpc$) Hubble Flow (LHF) in view of the very clumpy local universe is a long standing puzzle in standard and in open CDM cosmogony. The question addressed in this paper is whether the antigravity component of the recently discovered dark energy can cool the velocity flow enough to provide a solution to this puzzle. We calculate the growth of matter fluctuations in a flat universe containing a fraction $Ω_X(t_0)$ of dark energy obeying the time independent equation of state $p_X = w ρ_X$. We find that dark energy can indeed cool the LHF. However the dark energy parameter values required to make the predicted velocity dispersion consistent with the observed value $v_{rms}\simeq 40km/sec$ have been ruled out by other observational tests constraining the dark energy parameters $w$ and $Ω_X$. Therefore despite the claims of recent qualitative studies dark energy with time independent equation of state can not by itself explain the quietness and linearity of the Local Hubble Flow.

Large Gauged Q Balls

We study Q-balls associated with local U(1) symmetries. Such Q-balls are expected to become unstable for large values of their charge because of the repulsion mediated by the gauge force. We consider the possibility that the repulsion is eliminated through the presence in the interior of the Q-ball of fermions with charge opposite to that of the scalar condensate. Another possibility is that two scalar condensates of opposite charge form in the interior. We demonstrate that both these scenaria can lead to the existence of classically stable, large, gauged Q-balls. We present numerical solutions, as well as an analytical treatment of the ``thin-wall'' limit.

Quadrupole Instabilities of Relativistic Rotating Membranes

We generalize recent study of the stability of isotropic (spherical) rotating membranes to the anisotropic ellipsoidal membrane. We find that while the stability persists for deformations of spin $l=1$, the quadrupole and higher spin deformations ($l\geq 2$) lead to instabilities. We find the relevant instability modes and the corresponding eigenvalues. These indicate that the ellipsoidal rotating membranes generically decay into finger-like configurations.

Q Rings

We show the existence of new stable ring-like localized scalar field configurations whose stability is due to a combination of topological and nontopological charges. In that sense these defects may be called semitopological. These rings are Noether charged and also carry Noether current (they are superconducting). They are local minima of the energy in scalar field theories with an unbroken U(1) global symmetry. We obtain numerical solutions of the field configuration corresponding to large rings and derive virial theorems demonstrating their stability. We also derive the minimum energy field configurations in 3D and simulate the evolution of a finite size Q ring on a three dimensional lattice thus generalizing our demonstration of stability.

Metastability of Spherical Membranes in Supermembrane and Matrix Theory

Motivated by recent work we study rotating ellipsoidal membranes in the framework of the light-cone supermembrane theory. We investigate stability properties of these classical solutions which are important for the quantization of super membranes. We find the stability modes for all sectors of small multipole deformations. We exhibit an isomorphism of the linearized membrane equation with that of the SU(N) matrix model for every value of $N$. The boundaries of the linearized stability region are at a finite distance and they appear for finite size perturbations.

Some Dynamical Effects of the Cosmological Constant

Newton's law gets modified in the presence of a cosmological constant by a small repulsive term (antigarvity) that is proportional to the distance. Assuming a value of the cosmological constant consistent with the recent SnIa data ($\Lambda \simeq 10^{-52} m^{-2}$) we investigate the significance of this term on various astrophysical scales. We find that on galactic scales or smaller (less than a few tens of kpc) the dynamical effects of the vacuum energy are negligible by several orders of magnitude. On scales of 1Mpc or larger however we find that vacuum energy can significantly affect the dynamics. For example we show that the velocity data in the Local Group of galaxies correspond to galactic masses increased by 35% in the presence of vacuum energy. The effect is even more important on larger low density systems like clusters of galaxies or superclusters.

Q-Balls and the Proton Stability in Supersymmetric Theories

Abelian non-topological solitons with Baryon and/or Lepton quantum numbers naturally appear in the spectrum of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. They arise as a consequence of the existence of flat directions in the potential lifted by non renormalizable operators and SUSY breaking. We examine the conditions that these operators should satisfy in order to ensure proton stability and present a realistic string model which fulfils these requirements. We further identify a generic U(1) breaking term in the scalar potential and discuss its effect of rendering Q-balls unstable.

Non-Abelian Q-balls in Supersymmetric Theories

We demonstrate the existence of non-abelian non-topological solitons such as Q-balls in the spectrum of Wess-Zumino models with non-abelian global symmetries. We conveniently name them Q-superballs and identify them for short as Q-sballs. More specifically, we show that in contrast to the non-supersymmetric case, they arise in renormalizable potentials with cubic self-interactions of only one dimensionful parameter and for the entire parameter space of the model available. We solve the field equations and present the explicit form of the Q-sball solution. We compute its main physical properties and observe that in the supersymmetrically invariant vacuum Q-sballs form domains of manifestly broken sypersymmetry.

Core Phase Structure of Cosmic Strings and Monopoles

Global and local symmetries may or may not be restored inside topological defects depending upon the values of the parameters of the model. A detailed study of this parameter dependence of the core structure of strings and monopoles is presented in the context of simple models.

Core Phase Transitions for Embedded Topological Defects

Vortices in superfluid 3He-B have been observed to undergo a core transition. We discuss the analog phenomenon in relativistic field theories which admit embedded global domain walls, vortices and monopoles with a core phase structure. They are present in scalar field theories with approximate global symmetries which are broken both spontaneously and in parts explicitly. For a particular range of parameters their symmetric core exhibits an instability and decays into the nonsymmetric phase.

On sphaleron deformations induced by Yukawa interactions

Due to the presence of the chiral anomaly sphalerons with Chern-Simons number a half (CS=1/2) are the only static configurations that allow for a fermion level crossing in the two-dimensional Abelian-Higgs model with massless fermions, i.e. in the absence of Yukawa interactions. In the presence of fermion-Higgs interactions we demonstrate the existence of zero energy solutions to the one-dimensional Dirac equation at deformed sphalerons with CS$\neq 1/2 .$ Induced level crossing due to Yukawa interactions illustrates a non-trivial generalization of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem and of the equivalence between parity anomaly in odd and the chiral anomaly in even dimensions. We discuss a subtle manifestation of this effect in the standard electroweak theory at finite temperatures.
