Monte Carlo Experiments of Network Effects in Randomized Controlled Trials
This paper studies Monte Carlo simulations of content production in Randomized Controlled Trials on social networks modeled as random Watts-Strogatz graphs. Because treatment nodes are surrounded by control nodes, they do not receive the network boost they would receive if the entire network were treated, and part of their boost leaks into control. As a result, the treatment versus control lift underestimates the effect of a full graph-wide rollout. Clustering the treatment group reduces this underestimate, while its size does not depend on the size of the treatment group. These mechanisms appear as seven effects, each captured by a metric: the network effect, spillover effect, experiment dampening effect, intrinsic dampening effect, clustering effect, degree distribution effect and the experiment size effect.
