Small Samples and Short Panels: Evaluating Policy Evaluation Methods with Realistic Data

Methods for estimating causal effects in longitudinal, quasi-experimental settings are widely used in economics, public health, political science, and other fields. However, studies evaluating effects of health policies often rely on limited sample sizes, both in terms of study units and time periods analyzed. Synthetic difference-in-differences (SDiD) and the augmented synthetic control method (ASCM) are recently developed methods for evaluating the effects of policy interventions. Although SDiD and ASCM generally rely on weaker assumptions than both DiD and SCM, they lack theoretical performance guarantees with respect to bias or coverage in relevant settings with small sample sizes or short panel lengths. To evaluate the performance of SDiD and ASCM in realistic, small-sample settings, we employ a calibrated simulation strategy that allows the injection of a known treatment effect into existing data in a setting of interest. Drawing on findings from these empirical investigations, we offer practical guidance for researchers and policymakers on when SDiD and ASCM are likely to yield reliable estimates and inferences under realistic scenarios.

Waring Numbers of Ramified $p$-adic Rings

Let $p$ be prime and $e,k$ be positive integers, and let $R = {\mathbb Z}_p[\sqrt[e]{p}]$. We calculate the Waring numbers $g_R(k)$ for many values of $p, e$, and $k$, and investigate how the Waring numbers for $p=2$ change as $e$ and $k$ vary.

Subsets of free groups with distinct differences

Let $F_n$ be a free group of rank $n$, with free generating set $X$. A subset $D$ of $F_n$ is a \emph{Distinct Difference Configuration} if the differences $g^{-1}h$ are distinct, where $g$ and $h$ range over all (ordered) pairs of distinct elements of $D$. The subset $D$ has diameter at most $d$ if these differences all have length at most $d$. When $n$ is fixed and $d$ is large, the paper shows that the largest distinct difference configuration in $F_n$ of diameter at most $d$ has size approximately $(2n-1)^{d/3}$.

Machine-learning-accelerated Bose-Einstein condensation

Machine learning is emerging as a technology that can enhance physics experiment execution and data analysis. Here, we apply machine learning to accelerate the production of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms by Bayesian optimization of up to 55 control parameters. This approach enables us to prepare BECs of $2.8 \times 10^3$ optically trapped $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms from a room-temperature gas in 575 ms. The algorithm achieves the fast BEC preparation by applying highly efficient Raman cooling to near quantum degeneracy, followed by a brief final evaporation. We anticipate that many other physics experiments with complex nonlinear system dynamics can be significantly enhanced by a similar machine-learning approach.

Enhanced spontaneous emission from nanodiamond colour centres on opal photonic crystal

Colour centres in diamond are promising candidates as a platform for quantum technologies and biomedical imaging based on spins and/or photons. Controlling the emission properties of colour centres in diamond is a key requirement for developing efficient single photon sources with high collection efficiency. A number of groups have produced enhancement in the emission rate over narrow wavelength ranges by coupling single emitters in nanodiamond crystals to resonant electromagnetic structures. Here we characterise in detail the spontaneous emission rates of nitrogen-vacancy centres positioned in various locations on a structured substrate. We show an average factor of 1.5 enhancement of the total emission rate when nanodiamonds are on an opal photonic crystal surface, and observe changes in the lifetime distribution. We present a model to explain these observations and associate the lifetime properties with dipole orientation and polarization effects.
