Equilibria for Networks of Linear Translational Springs

We use tools from nonlinear algebra to study the equilibria of small linear translational spring networks. Specifically we use the techniques of homotopy continuation, monodromy, and parameter homotopy (a.k.a. cheater homotopy) to solve all rigid linear translational spring networks up to $5$ nodes in both $2$ and $3$ dimensions. We describe a method of implementing parameter homotopy that arises naturally from the physical structure of the system. We give precise total degree bounds on the maximum number of solutions for general planar spring networks. We discuss further efficiency gains obtained from polyhedral homotopy methods. We compare the computation efficiency of these techniques against a baseline of Newton's method.

Four-qubit critical states

Verstraete, Dehaene, and De Moor (2003) showed that SLOCC invariants provide entanglement monotones. We observe that many highly entangled or useful four-qubit states that appear in prior literature are stationary points of such entanglement measures. This motivates the search for more stationary points. We use the notion of critical points (in the sense of the Kempf-Ness theorem) together with Vinberg theory to reduce the complexity of the problem significantly. We solve the corresponding systems utilizing modern numerical nonlinear algebra methods and reduce the solutions by natural symmetries. This method produces an extended list of four-qubit stationary points, which includes all the critical states in the survey by Enriquez et al (2016). To illustrate the potential for application, we discuss the use of these states to generate pure five-qubit and six-qubit quantum error correcting codes by reversing a construction of Rains (1996).

Tensor decompositions with applications to LU and SLOCC equivalence of multipartite pure states

We introduce a broad lemma, one consequence of which is the higher order singular value decomposition (HOSVD) of tensors defined by DeLathauwer, DeMoor and Vandewalle (2000). By an analogous application of the lemma, we find a complex orthogonal version of the HOSVD. Kraus' (2010) algorithm used the HOSVD to compute normal forms of almost all $n$-qubit pure states under the action of the local unitary group. Taking advantage of the double cover $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{C}) \times \operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{C}) \to \operatorname{SO}_4({\mathbb{C}})$, we produce similar algorithms (distinguished by the parity of $n$) that compute normal forms for almost all $n$-qubit pure states under the action of the SLOCC group.

ExteriorExtensions: A package for Macaulay2

We explain a Macaulay2 implementation of a construction, which appeared in [Holweck-Oeding arXiv:2206.13662], of a graded algebra structure on the direct sum of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ (typically $\mathfrak{sl}_n$) and a $\mathfrak{g}$-module (typically a subspace of an exterior algebra $\bigwedge^{\bullet}\mathbb{C}^n$). We implement brackets, a Killing form, matrix representations of adjoint operators and ranks of blocks of their powers.

Maximally entangled real states and SLOCC invariants: the 3-qutrit case

The absolute values of polynomial SLOCC invariants (which always vanish on separable states) can be seen as measures of entanglement. We study the case of real 3-qutrit systems and discover a new set of maximally entangled states (from the point of view of maximizing the hyperdeterminant). We also study the basic fundamental invariants and find real 3-qutrit states that maximize their absolute values. It is notable that the Aharonov state is a simultaneous maximizer for all 3 fundamental invariants. We also study the evaluation of these invariants on random real 3-qutrit systems and analyze their behavior using histograms and level-set plots. Finally, we show how to evaluate these invariants on any 3-qutrit state using basic matrix operations.

A hyperdeterminant on Fermionic Fock Space

Twenty years ago Cayley's hyperdeterminant, the degree four invariant of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{C}[\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^2\otimes \mathbb{C}^2]^{{\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})}^{\times 3}}$, was popularized in modern physics as separates genuine entanglement classes in the three qubit Hilbert space and is connected to entropy formulas for special solutions of black holes. In this note we compute the analogous invariant on the fermionic Fock space for $N=8$, i.e. spin particles with four different locations, and show how this invariant projects to other well-known invariants in quantum information. We also give combinatorial interpretations of these formulas.

Restricted Secant Varieties of Grassmannians

Restricted secant varieties of Grassmannians are constructed from sums of points corresponding to $k$-planes with the restriction that their intersection has a prescribed dimension. We study dimensions of restricted secant of Grassmannians and relate them to the analogous question for secants of Grassmannians via an incidence variety construction. We define a notion of expected dimension and give a formula for the dimension of all restricted secant varieties of Grassmannians that holds if the Baur-Draisma-deGraaf Conjecture on non-defectivity of Grassmannians is true. We also demonstrate example calculations in Macaulay2, and point out ways to make these calculations more efficient. We also show a potential application to coding theory.

Toward Jordan Decompositions of Tensors

We expand on an idea of Vinberg to take a tensor space and the natural Lie algebra that acts on it and embed their direct sum into an auxiliary algebra. Viewed as endomorphisms of this algebra, we associate adjoint operators to tensors. We show that the group actions on the tensor space and on the adjoint operators are consistent, which means that the invariants of the adjoint operator of a tensor, such as the Jordan decomposition, are invariants of the tensor. We show that there is an essentially unique algebra structure that preserves the tensor structure and has a meaningful Jordan decomposition. We utilize aspects of these adjoint operators to study orbit separation and classification in examples relevant to tensor decomposition and quantum information.

Analysis of the Stochastic Alternating Least Squares Method for the Decomposition of Random Tensors

Stochastic Alternating Least Squares (SALS) is a method that approximates the canonical decomposition of averages of sampled random tensors. Its simplicity and efficient memory usage make SALS an ideal tool for decomposing tensors in an online setting. We show, under mild regularization and readily verifiable assumptions on the boundedness of the data, that the SALS algorithm is globally convergent. Numerical experiments validate our theoretical findings and demonstrate the algorithm's performance and complexity.

Learning Algebraic Models of Quantum Entanglement

We review supervised learning and deep neural network design for learning membership on algebraic varieties. We demonstrate that these trained artificial neural networks can predict the entanglement type for quantum states. We give examples for detecting degenerate states, as well as border rank classification for up to 5 binary qubits and 3 qutrits (ternary qubits).

Hyperdeterminants from the $E_8$ Discriminant

We find expressions of the polynomials defining the dual varieties of Grassmannians $Gr(3,9)$ and $Gr(4,8)$ both in terms of the fundamental invariants and in terms of a generic semi-simple element. We project the polynomial defining the dual of the adjoint orbit of $E_{8}$, and obtain the polynomials of interest as factors. To find an expression of the $Gr(4,8)$ discriminant in terms of fundamental invariants, which has $15,942$ terms, we perform interpolation with mod-$p$ reduction and rational reconstruction. From these expressions for the discriminants of $Gr(3,9)$ and $Gr(4,8)$ we also obtain expressions for well-known hyperdeterminants of formats $3\times 3\times 3$ and $2\times 2\times 2\times 2$.

On the (non-)vanishing of syzygies of Segre embeddings

We analyze the vanishing and non-vanishing behavior of the graded Betti numbers for Segre embeddings of products of projective spaces. We give lower bounds for when each of the rows of the Betti table becomes non-zero, and prove that our bounds are tight for Segre embeddings of products of P^1. This generalizes results of Rubei concerning the Green-Lazarsfeld property N_p for Segre embeddings. Our methods combine the Kempf-Weyman geometric technique for computing syzygies, the Ein-Erman-Lazarsfeld approach to proving non-vanishing of Betti numbers, and the theory of algebras with straightening laws.

Border Ranks of Monomials

Young flattenings, introduced by Landsberg and Ottaviani, give determinantal equations for secant varieties and their non-vanishing provides lower bounds for border ranks of tensors and in particular polynomials. We study monomial-optimal shapes for Young flattenings, which exhibit the limits of the Young flattening method. In particular, they provide the best possible lower bound for large classes of monomials including all monomials up to degree 6, monomials in 3 variables, and any power of the product of variables. On the other hand, for degree 7 and higher there are monomials for which no Young flattening can give a lower bound that matches the conjecturally tight upper bound of Landsberg and Teitler.

Are all Secant Varieties of Segre Products Arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay?

When present, the Cohen-Macaulay property can be useful for finding the minimal defining equations of an algebraic variety. It is conjectured that all secant varieties of Segre products of projective spaces are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. A summary of the known cases where the conjecture is true is given. An inductive procedure based on the work of Landsberg and Weyman (LW-lifting) is described and used to obtain resolutions of orbits of secant varieties from those of smaller secant varieties. A new computation of the minimal free resolution of the variety of border rank 4 tensors of format $3 \times 3 \times 4$ is given together with its equivariant presentation. LW-lifting is used to prove several cases where secant varieties are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay and arithmetically Gorenstein.

Symmetrization of Principal Minors and Cycle-Sums

We solve the Symmetrized Principal Minor Assignment Problem, that is we show how to determine if for a given vector $v\in \mathbb{C}^{n}$ there is an $n\times n$ matrix that has all $i\times i$ principal minors equal to $v_{i}$. We use a special isomorphism (a non-linear change of coordinates to cycle-sums) that simplifies computation and reveals hidden structure. We use the symmetries that preserve symmetrized principal minors and cycle-sums to treat 3 cases: symmetric, skew-symmetric and general square matrices. We describe the matrices that have such symmetrized principal minors as well as the ideal of relations among symmetrized principal minors / cycle-sums. We also connect the resulting algebraic varieties of symmetrized principal minors to tangential and secant varieties, and Eulerian polynomials.

Equations for the fifth secant variety of Segre products of projective spaces

We describe a computational proof that the fifth secant variety of the Segre product of five copies of the projective line is a codimension 2 complete intersection of equations of degree 6 and 16. Our computations rely on pseudo-randomness, and numerical accuracy, so parts of our proof are only valid "with high probability".
