Closing the Dynamics Gap through Self-Directed Robotic Interaction

Agentic Real2Sim2Real systems can reconstruct a scene in simulation from camera observations, but contact-rich dynamics such as friction and restitution cannot be observed without interaction. We call this the dynamics gap and present CUE, an agentic system that closes it by interacting with the environment itself. Given only a high-level instruction and no resets, the agent builds its own perception, identifies physical parameters, and targets interactions where its simulation is least accurate. On billiards, CUE reduces held-out ball-position error by 72% relative to the strongest baseline across 25 hidden-physics conditions in simulation, and we further deploy it on a real pool table. Full-Order Safety for Nonlinear Reduced-Order MPC

Reduced-order models (ROMs) make model predictive control (MPC) of high-dimensional nonlinear systems tractable, but the resulting modeling error can lead to constraint violations on the real system. We introduce CoRE-MPC, a robust MPC formulation that plans with a nonlinear ROM and guarantees recursive feasibility and constraint satisfaction for the full-order system. It can be applied with a broad class of nonlinear model reduction techniques and the resulting MPC does not require evaluating the full-order model online, thus ensuring computational efficiency. The key insight is in how the ROM affects the dynamics of the prediction error. We account for this with two error radii that are propagated alongside the ROM and provide a guaranteed bound on the prediction error. The approach is validated in simulation on an 80-state oscillator chain, a Burgers equation, and a 9,768-state finite-element soft robot, where a two-state ROM with data-driven bounds keeps all 1,628 nodes clear of a wall at a median solve time below 1 ms for a 20 ms control period. Across these examples, CoRE-MPC is 13 to 61 times faster than full-order robust MPC at only 27 to 35% higher closed-loop cost, whereas existing certified schemes are either infeasible or at least twice as conservative. Harmonia: End-to-End RAG Serving Optimization

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) improves the reliability of large language models by integrating external knowledge, but serving RAG pipelines efficiently is challenging because requests traverse heterogeneous components spanning LLM inference, databases, and CPU-side processing. We present Harmonia, an end-to-end RAG serving framework that addresses these bottlenecks through (i) a flexible pipeline specification interface for composing custom workflows, (ii) heterogeneity-aware deployment that provisions and configures components as a distributed inference system, and (iii) a closed-loop runtime controller that monitors load and execution progress and reduces SLO violations through request prioritization and auto-scaling. Across four RAG applications, Harmonia outperforms commercial alternatives, improving throughput by more than 2.04x while reducing SLO violations by up to 78.4 percent.

Learning Actuator-Aware Spectral Submanifolds for Precise Control of Continuum Robots

Continuum robots exhibit high-dimensional, nonlinear dynamics which are often coupled with their actuation mechanism. Spectral submanifold (SSM) reduction has emerged as a leading method for reducing high-dimensional nonlinear dynamical systems to low-dimensional invariant manifolds. Our proposed control-augmented SSMs (caSSMs) extend this methodology by explicitly incorporating control inputs into the state representation, enabling these models to capture nonlinear state-input couplings. Training these models relies solely on controlled decay trajectories of the actuator-augmented state, thereby removing the additional actuation-calibration step commonly needed by prior SSM-for-control methods. We learn a compact caSSM model for a tendon-driven trunk robot, enabling real-time control and reducing open-loop prediction error by 40% compared to existing methods. In closed-loop experiments with model predictive control (MPC), caSSM reduces tracking error by 52%, demonstrating improved performance against Koopman and SSM based MPC and practical deployability on hardware continuum robots.

Graph Neural Model Predictive Control for High-Dimensional Systems

The control of high-dimensional systems, such as soft robots, requires models that faithfully capture complex dynamics while remaining computationally tractable. This work presents a framework that integrates Graph Neural Network (GNN)-based dynamics models with structure-exploiting Model Predictive Control to enable real-time control of high-dimensional systems. By representing the system as a graph with localized interactions, the GNN preserves sparsity, while a tailored condensing algorithm eliminates state variables from the control problem, ensuring efficient computation. The complexity of our condensing algorithm scales linearly with the number of system nodes, and leverages Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) parallelization to achieve real-time performance. The proposed approach is validated in simulation and experimentally on a physical soft robotic trunk. Results show that our method scales to systems with up to 1,000 nodes at 100 Hz in closed-loop, and demonstrates real-time reference tracking on hardware with sub-centimeter accuracy, outperforming baselines by 63.6%. Finally, we show the capability of our method to achieve effective full-body obstacle avoidance.

Perfecting Periodic Trajectory Tracking: Model Predictive Control with a Periodic Observer ($Π$-MPC)

In Model Predictive Control (MPC), discrepancies between the actual system and the predictive model can lead to substantial tracking errors and significantly degrade performance and reliability. While such discrepancies can be alleviated with more complex models, this often complicates controller design and implementation. By leveraging the fact that many trajectories of interest are periodic, we show that perfect tracking is possible when incorporating a simple observer that estimates and compensates for periodic disturbances. We present the design of the observer and the accompanying tracking MPC scheme, proving that their combination achieves zero tracking error asymptotically, regardless of the complexity of the unmodelled dynamics. We validate the effectiveness of our method, demonstrating asymptotically perfect tracking on a high-dimensional soft robot with nearly 10,000 states and a fivefold reduction in tracking errors compared to a baseline MPC on small-scale autonomous race car experiments.

Dobby: A Conversational Service Robot Driven by GPT-4

This work introduces a robotics platform which embeds a conversational AI agent in an embodied system for natural language understanding and intelligent decision-making for service tasks; integrating task planning and human-like conversation. The agent is derived from a large language model, which has learned from a vast corpus of general knowledge. In addition to generating dialogue, this agent can interface with the physical world by invoking commands on the robot; seamlessly merging communication and behavior. This system is demonstrated in a free-form tour-guide scenario, in an HRI study combining robots with and without conversational AI capabilities. Performance is measured along five dimensions: overall effectiveness, exploration abilities, scrutinization abilities, receptiveness to personification, and adaptability.
