The on-shell action of supergravity & the B-side of TsT and single-trace $T\bar T$

We propose boundary terms for the action of the NS sector of supergravity on $M_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ spacetimes -- where $M_3$ is an AdS$_3$ or a linear dilaton background -- that render the Brown-York stress tensor and the on-shell action finite. For AdS$_3$ backgrounds, we show that the on-shell action yields a free energy with chemical potentials determined by the $B$-field. TsT (T-duality + shift + T-duality) transformations of these backgrounds generate classes of linear dilaton backgrounds distinguished by their boundary conditions. Among them, there is one class of backgrounds that reproduces features of the single-trace $T\bar T$ deformation. These backgrounds have additional chemical potentials that can be turned off by large gauge transformations of the $B$-field. We show that the Brown-York stress tensor of these backgrounds reproduces the energies and the trace flow equation of $T\bar T$-deformed CFTs. We also show that the on-shell action matches the $T\bar T$ partition function and discuss the interpretation of these results.

The light we can see: Extracting black holes from weak Jacobi forms

We quantify how constraints on light states affect the asymptotic growth of heavy states in weak Jacobi forms. The constraints we consider are sparseness conditions on the Fourier coefficients of these forms, which are necessary to interpret them as gravitational path integrals. Using crossing kernels, we extract the leading and subleading behavior of these coefficients and show that the leading Cardy-like growth is robust in a wide regime of validity. On the other hand, we find that subleading corrections are sensitive to the constraints placed on the light states, and we quantify their imprint on the asymptotic growth of states. Our approach is tested against the generating function of symmetric product orbifolds, where we provide new insights into the factors contributing to the asymptotic growth of their Fourier coefficients. Finally, we use our methods to revisit the UV/IR connection that relates black hole microstate counting to modular forms. We provide a microscopic interpretation of the logarithmic corrections to the entropy of BPS black holes in N = 2, 4 ungauged supergravity in four and five dimensions, and tie it to consistency conditions in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$.

Searching for strongly coupled AdS matter with multi-trace deformations

Holographic CFTs admit a dual emergent description in terms of semiclassical general relativity minimally coupled to matter fields. While the gravitational interactions are required to be suppressed by the Planck scale, the matter sector is allowed to interact strongly at the AdS scale. From the perspective of the dual CFT, this requires breaking large-$N$ factorization in certain sectors of the theory. Exactly marginal multi-trace deformations are capable of achieving this while still preserving a consistent large-$N$ limit. We probe the effect of these deformations on the bulk theory by computing the relevant four-point functions in conformal perturbation theory. We find a simple answer in terms of a finite sum of conformal blocks, indicating that the correlators display no bulk-point singularities. This implies that the matter of the bulk theory is made strongly coupled by boundary terms rather than local bulk interactions. Our results suggest that holographic CFTs that describe strongly coupled AdS matter must be isolated points on the CFT landscape or sit infinitely far away on the conformal manifold from conventional holographic CFTs.

Extremal surfaces in glue-on AdS/$T\bar T$ holography

$T\bar T$ deformed CFTs with positive deformation parameter have been proposed to be holographically dual to Einstein gravity in a glue-on $\mathrm{AdS}_3$ spacetime. The latter is constructed from AdS$_3$ by gluing a patch of an auxiliary AdS$_3^*$ spacetime to its asymptotic boundary. In this work, we propose a glue-on version of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, which is given by the signed area of an extremal surface. The extremal surface is anchored at the endpoints of an interval on a cutoff surface in the glue-on geometry. It consists of an RT surface lying in the AdS$_3$ part of the spacetime and its extension to the AdS$_3^*$ region. The signed area is the length of the RT surface minus the length of the segments in AdS$_3^*$. We find that the Ryu-Takayanagi formula with the signed area reproduces the entanglement entropy of a half interval for $T\bar T$-deformed CFTs on the sphere. We then study the properties of extremal surfaces on various glue-on geometries, including Poincar\'e $\mathrm{AdS}_3$, global $\mathrm{AdS}_3$, and the BTZ black hole. When anchored on multiple intervals at the boundary, the signed area of the minimal surfaces undergoes phase transitions with novel properties. In all of these examples, we find that the glue-on extremal surfaces exhibit a minimum length related to the deformation parameter of $T\bar T$-deformed CFTs.

Glue-on AdS holography for $T\bar T$-deformed CFTs

The $T\bar T$ deformation is a solvable irrelevant deformation whose properties depend on the sign of the deformation parameter $\mu$. In particular, $T\bar T$-deformed CFTs with $\mu<0$ have been proposed to be holographically dual to Einstein gravity where the metric satisfies Dirichlet boundary conditions at a finite cutoff surface. In this paper, we put forward a holographic proposal for $T\bar T$-deformed CFTs with $\mu>0$, in which case the bulk geometry is constructed by gluing a patch of AdS$_3$ to the original spacetime. As evidence, we show that the $T\bar T$ trace flow equation, the spectrum on the cylinder, and the partition function on the torus and the sphere, among other results, can all be reproduced from bulk calculations in glue-on AdS$_3$.

On the universal behavior of $T\bar T$-deformed CFTs: single and double-trace partition functions at large $c$

We study universal properties of the torus partition function of $T\bar T$-deformed CFTs under the assumption of modular invariance, for both the original version, referred to as the double-trace version in this paper, and the single-trace version defined as the symmetric product orbifold of double-trace $T\bar T$-deformed CFTs. In the double-trace case, we specify sparseness conditions for the light states for which the partition function at low temperatures is dominated by the vacuum when the central charge of the undeformed CFT is large. Using modular invariance, this implies a universal density of high energy states, in analogy with the behavior of holographic CFTs. For the single-trace $T\bar T$ deformation, we show that modular invariance implies that the torus partition function can be written in terms of the untwisted partition function and its modular images, the latter of which can be obtained from the action of a generalized Hecke operator. The partition function and the energy of twisted states match holographic calculations in previous literature, thus providing further evidence for the conjectured holographic correspondence. In addition, we show that the single-trace partition function is universal when the central charge of the undeformed CFT is large, without needing to assume a sparse density of light states. Instead, the density of light states is shown to always saturate the sparseness condition.

Conformal field theories dual to quantum gravity with strongly coupled matter

A holographic conformal field theory is dual to semi-classical general relativity in Anti-de Sitter space coupled to matter fields. If the CFT factorizes in the large-$N$ limit, then all couplings in its dual are suppressed by the Planck scale, making the matter fields weakly interacting. We propose a mechanism to produce CFTs whose dual matter fields couple weakly to gravity, but interact strongly with each other. We achieve this by turning on exactly marginal multi-trace deformations, and quantify the effect using conformal perturbation theory.

Deforming Symmetric Product Orbifolds: A tale of moduli and higher spin currents

We analyze how deforming symmetric product orbifolds of two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ conformal field theories by an exactly marginal operator lifts higher spin currents present at the orbifold point. We find on the one hand that these currents are universally lifted regardless of the underlying CFT. On the other hand the details of the lifting are surprisingly non-universal, with dependence on the central charge of the underlying CFT and the specific marginal operator in use. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, our results illustrate the mechanism by which the stringy spectrum turns into a supergravity spectrum when moving through the moduli space. They also provide further evidence that symmetric product orbifolds of $\mathcal{N}=2$ minimal models are holographic.

TsT, black holes, and $T\bar T + J\bar T + T\bar J$

We generate a class of string backgrounds by a sequence of TsT transformations of the NS1-NS5 system that we argue are holographically dual to states in a single-trace $T\bar T + J\bar T + T\bar J$-deformed CFT$_2$. The new string backgrounds include general rotating black hole solutions with two $U(1)$ charges as well as a smooth solution without a horizon that is interpreted as the ground state. As evidence for the correspondence we (i) derive the long string spectrum and relate it to the spectrum of the dual field theory; (ii) show that the black hole thermodynamics can be reproduced from single-trace $T\bar T + J\bar T + T\bar J$-deformed CFTs; and (iii) show that the energy of the ground state matches the energy of the vacuum in the dual theory. We also study geometric properties of these new spacetimes and find that for some choices of the parameters the three-dimensional Ricci scalar in the Einstein frame can become positive in a region outside the horizon before reaching closed timelike curves and singularities.

Modular Hamiltonians in flat holography and (W)AdS/WCFT

We study several aspects of holographic entanglement in two models known as flat$_3$/BMSFT and (W)AdS$_3$/WCFT. These are two examples of holography beyond AdS/CFT where the the boundary field theories are not Lorentz invariant but still feature an infinite set of local symmetries. In the first example, BMS-invariant field theories (BMSFTs) are conjectured to provide a holographic description of quantum gravity in asymptotically flat three-dimensional spacetimes; while in the second example, warped conformal field theories (WCFTs) are proposed to describe quantum gravity in warped AdS$_3$ or AdS$_3$ backgrounds with Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, we derive the modular Hamiltonian for single intervals in both BMSFTs and WCFTs and find the holographic duals in the bulk using the covariant formulation of gravitational charges. We also extend the first law of entanglement entropy to these models of non-AdS holography and discuss the bound on "modular chaos" introduced recently in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Swing surfaces and holographic entanglement beyond AdS/CFT

We propose a holographic entanglement entropy prescription for general states and regions in two models of holography beyond AdS/CFT known as flat$_3$/BMSFT and (W)AdS$_3$/WCFT. Flat$_3$/BMSFT is a candidate of holography for asymptotically flat three-dimensional spacetimes, while (W)AdS$_3$/WCFT is relevant in the study of black holes in the real world. In particular, the boundary theories are examples of quantum field theories that feature an infinite dimensional symmetry group but break Lorentz invariance. Our holographic entanglement entropy proposal is given by the area of a swing surface that consists of ropes, which are null geodesics emanating from the entangling surface at the boundary, and a bench, which is a spacelike geodesic connecting the ropes. The proposal is supported by an extension of the Lewkowycz-Maldacena argument, reproduces previous results based on the Rindler method, and satisfies the first law of entanglement entropy.

TsT, $T\bar{T}$ and black strings

We study the relationship between TsT transformations, marginal deformations of string theory on AdS$_3$ backgrounds, and irrelevant deformations of 2d CFTs. We show that TsT transformations of NS-NS backgrounds correspond to instantaneous deformations of the worldsheet action by the antisymmetric product of two Noether currents, holographically mirroring the definition of the $T\bar{T}$, $J\bar{T}$, $T\bar{J}$, and $J\bar{J}$ deformations of 2d CFTs. Applying a TsT transformation to string theory on BTZ $\times S^3\times M^4$ we obtain a general class of rotating black string solutions, including the Horne-Horowitz and the Giveon-Itzhaki-Kutasov ones as special cases, which we show are holographically dual to thermal states in single-trace $T\bar{T}$-deformed CFTs. We also find a smooth solution interpolating between global AdS$_3$ in the IR and a linear dilaton background in the UV that is interpreted as the NS-NS ground state in the dual $T\bar{T}$-deformed CFT. This background suggests the existence of an upper bound on the deformation parameter above which the solution becomes complex. We find that the worldsheet spectrum, the thermodynamics of the black strings (in particular their Bekenstein-Hawking entropy), and the critical value of the deformation parameter match the corresponding quantities obtained from single-trace $T\bar{T}$ deformations.

Heating up holography for single-trace $J\bar{T}$ deformations

We study thermodynamic aspects of a tractable toy model of holography for extremal Kerr black holes proposed in [arXiv:1806.10127]. On the gravity side, the theory can be described by the worldsheet action of string theory on a warped AdS$_3$ background supported by NS-NS flux. Once we turn on temperature, the deformed background is described by a black string solution of type IIB supergravity that features a locally warped AdS$_3$ factor. The dual field theory is conjectured to be a single-trace version of a $J\bar{T}$-deformed CFT at finite temperature. As evidence for the correspondence we show that the spectrum of strings winding on the deformed background agrees with the spectrum of $J\bar{T}$-deformed CFTs. Furthermore, we show that the gravitational charges of the black string match the averaged charges of a thermal ensemble in the dual field theory. Finally, we reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black string from the microscopic density of states of $J\bar{T}$-deformed CFTs.

Entanglement and chaos in warped conformal field theories

Various aspects of warped conformal field theories (WCFTs) are studied including entanglement entropy on excited states, the Renyi entropy after a local quench, and out-of-time-order four-point functions. Assuming a large central charge and dominance of the vacuum block in the conformal block expansion, (i) we calculate the single-interval entanglement entropy on an excited state, matching previous finite temperature results by changing the ensemble; and (ii) we show that WCFTs are maximally chaotic, a result that is compatible with the existence of black holes in the holographic duals. Finally, we relax the aforementioned assumptions and study the time evolution of the Renyi entropy after a local quench. We find that the change in the Renyi entropy is topological, vanishing at early and late times, and nonvanishing in between only for charged states in spectrally-flowed WCFTs.

Strings on warped AdS$_3$ via $T\bar{J}$ deformations

We study a toy model of the Kerr/CFT correspondence using string theory on AdS$_3 \times S^3$. We propose a single trace irrelevant deformation of the dual CFT generated by a vertex operator with spacetime dimensions (2,1). This operator shares the same quantum numbers as the integrable $T\bar{J}$ deformation of two-dimensional CFTs where $\bar{J}$ is a chiral $U(1)$ current. We show that the deformation is marginal on the worldsheet and that the target spacetime is deformed to null warped AdS$_3$ upon dimensional reduction. We also calculate the spectrum of the deformed theory on the cylinder and compare it to the field theory analysis of $T\bar{J}$-deformed CFTs.

Bootstrapping holographic warped CFTs or: how I learned to stop worrying and tolerate negative norms

We use modular invariance to derive constraints on the spectrum of warped conformal field theories (WCFTs) --- nonrelativistic quantum field theories described by a chiral Virasoro and $U(1)$ Kac-Moody algebra. We focus on holographic WCFTs and interpret our results in the simplest holographic set up: three dimensional gravity with Compere-Song-Strominger boundary conditions. Holographic WCFTs feature a negative $U(1)$ level that is responsible for negative norm descendant states. Despite the violation of unitarity we show that the modular bootstrap is still viable provided the (Virasoro-Kac-Moody) primaries carry positive norm. In particular, we show that holographic WCFTs must feature either primary states with negative norm or states with imaginary $U(1)$ charge, the latter of which have a natural holographic interpretation. For large central charge and arbitrary level, we show that the first excited primary state in any WCFT satisfies the Hellerman bound. Moreover, when the level is positive we point out that known bounds for CFTs with internal $U(1)$ symmetries readily apply to unitary WCFTs.

Bounds on CFTs with $W_3$ algebras and AdS$_3$ higher spin theories

The scaling dimension of the first excited state in two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) satisfies a universal upper bound. Using the modular bootstrap, we extend this result to CFTs with $W_3$ algebras which are generically dual to higher spin theories in AdS$_3$. Assuming unitarity and modular invariance, we show that the conformal weights $h$, $\bar{h}$ of the lightest charged state satisfy $h < c/12 + O(1)$ and $\bar{h} < \bar{c}/12 + O(1)$ in the limit where the central charges $c$, $\bar{c}$ are large. Furthermore, we show that in this limit any consistent CFT with $W_3$ currents must contain at least one state whose $W_3$ charge $w$ obeys $|w| > 4 |h-c/24| /\sqrt{10 \pi c} + O(1)$. We discuss hints on the existence of stronger bounds and comment on the interpretation of our results in the dual higher spin theory.

Non-linear partially massless symmetry in an SO(1,5) continuation of conformal gravity

We construct a non-linear theory of interacting spin-2 fields that is invariant under the partially massless (PM) symmetry to all orders. This theory is based on the SO(1,5) group, in analogy with the SO(2,4) formulation of conformal gravity, but has a quadratic spectrum free of ghost instabilities. The action contains a vector field associated to a local SO(2) symmetry which is manifest in the vielbein formulation of the theory. We show that, in a perturbative expansion, the SO(2) symmetry transmutes into the PM transformations of a massive spin-2 field. In this context, the vector field is crucial to circumvent earlier obstructions to an order-by-order construction of PM symmetry. Although the non-linear theory lacks enough first class constraints to remove all helicity-0 modes from the spectrum, the PM transformations survive to all orders. The absence of ghosts and strong coupling effects at the non-linear level are not addressed here.
