Nonquadratic global asymptotic stability certificates for saturated linear feedbacks

We establish sufficient conditions for positive (semi-)definiteness, with or without radial unboundedness, for nonquadratic Lyapunov function constructed as sign-indefinite quadratic forms involving the state and the deadzone of a suitable input. We then use these conditions to build weak nonquadratic Lyapunov functions establishing global asymptotic stability of linear systems in feedback through a saturation, leveraging invariance principles. Our results are shown to be non-conservative (necessary and sufficient) for a family of well known prototypical examples of linear SISO feedbacks that are not globally exponentially stabilizable (the so-called ANCBI plants). Our multi-input extension leads to convex stability analysis tests, formulated as linear matrix inequalities that are applicable to ANCBI non-globally-exponentially-stabilizable plants.

Regional stability conditions for recurrent neural network-based control systems

In this paper we propose novel global and regional stability analysis conditions based on linear matrix inequalities for a general class of recurrent neural networks. These conditions can be also used for state-feedback control design and a suitable optimization problem enforcing H2 norm minimization properties is defined. The theoretical results are corroborated by numerical simulations, showing the advantages and limitations of the methods presented herein.

Modelling and Hovering Stabilisation of a Free-Rotating Wing UAV

We propose a multibody model of a freewing UAV. This model allows obtaining simulations of the UAV's behaviour and, in the future, to design a control law stabilising the entire flight envelope (hovering and forward flight). We also describe the realisation of a prototype and a comparison of possible methods for estimating the UAV's states. With this prototype, we report on experimental hovering flights with a non-linear incremental dynamic inversion controller to stabilise the wing and a proportional derivative controller for the fuselage stabilization.

Hybrid Lyapunov-based feedback stabilization of bipedal locomotion based on reference spreading

We propose a hybrid formulation of the linear inverted pendulum model for bipedal locomotion, where the foot switches are triggered based on the center of mass position, removing the need for pre-defined footstep timings. Using a concept similar to reference spreading, we define nontrivial tracking error coordinates induced by our hybrid model. These coordinates enjoy desirable linear flow dynamics and rather elegant jump dynamics perturbed by a suitable extended class ${\mathcal K}_\infty$ function of the position error. We stabilize this hybrid error dynamics using a saturated feedback controller, selecting its gains by solving a convex optimization problem. We prove local asymptotic stability of the tracking error and provide a certified estimate of the basin of attraction, comparing it with a numerical estimate obtained from the integration of the closed-loop dynamics. Simulations on a full-body model of a real robot show the practical applicability of the proposed framework and its advantages with respect to a standard model predictive control formulation.

A hybrid dynamical system approach to the impulsive control of spacecraft rendezvous (extended version)

This paper introduces a hybrid dynamical system methodology for managing impulsive control in spacecraft rendezvous and proximity operations under the Hill-Clohessy-Wiltshire model. We address the control design problem by isolating the out-of-plane from the in-plane dynamics and present a feedback control law for each of them. This law is based on a Lyapunov function tailored to each of the dynamics, capable of addressing thruster saturation and also a minimum impulse bit. These Lyapunov functions were found by reformulating the system's dynamics into coordinates that more intuitively represent their physical behavior. The effectiveness of our control laws is then shown through numerical simulation. This is an extended version of an ECC24 article of the same name, which includes the proofs omitted for lack of space.

Robust Safety-Critical Control for Systems with Sporadic Measurements and Dwell Time Constraints

This paper presents extensions of control barrier function (CBF) theory to systems with disturbances wherein a controller only receives measurements infrequently and operates open-loop between measurements, while still satisfying state constraints. The paper considers both impulsive and continuous actuators, and models the actuators, measurements, disturbances, and timing constraints as a hybrid dynamical system. We then design an open-loop observer that bounds the worst-case uncertainty between measurements. We develop definitions of CBFs for both actuation cases, and corresponding conditions on the control input to guarantee satisfaction of the state constraints. We apply these conditions to simulations of a satellite rendezvous in an elliptical orbit and autonomous orbit stationkeeping.

Controlling identical linear multi-agent systems over directed graphs

We consider the problem of synchronizing a multi-agent system (MAS) composed of several identical linear systems connected through a directed graph. To design a suitable controller, we construct conditions based on Bilinear Matrix Inequalities (BMIs) that ensure state synchronization.Since these conditions are non-convex, we propose an iterative algorithm based on a suitable relaxation that allows us to formulate Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) conditions. As a result, the algorithm yields a common static state-feedback matrix for the controller that satisfies general linear performance constraints. Our results are achieved under the mild assumption that the graph is time-invariant and connected.

Data-driven control of input saturated systems: a LMI-based approach

This paper addresses three complex control challenges related to input-saturated systems from a data-driven perspective. Unlike the traditional two-stage process involving system identification and model-based control, the proposed approach eliminates the need for an explicit model description. The method combines data-based closed-loop representations, Lyapunov theory, instrumental variables, and a generalized sector condition to formulate data-driven linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). These LMIs are applied to maximize the origin's basin of attraction, minimize the closed-loop reachable set with bounded disturbances, and introduce a new data-driven $\ell_2$-gain minimization problem. Demonstrations on benchmark examples highlight the advantages and limitations of the proposed approach compared to an explicit identification of the system, emphasizing notable benefits in handling nonlinear dynamics.

Decentralized PI-control and Anti-windup in Resource Sharing Networks

We consider control of multiple stable first-order \review{agents} which have a control coupling described by an M-matrix. These agents are subject to incremental sector-bounded \review{input} nonlinearities. We show that such plants can be globally asymptotically stabilized to a unique equilibrium using fully decentralized proportional-integral controllers equipped with anti-windup and subject to local tuning rules. In addition, we show that when the nonlinearities correspond to the saturation function, the closed loop asymptotically minimizes a weighted 1-norm of the agents state mismatch. The control strategy is finally compared to other state-of-the-art controllers on a numerical district heating example.

Hybrid coupling rules for leaderless heterogeneous oscillators: uniform global asymptotic and finite-time synchronization

We investigate the engineering scenario where the objective is to synchronize heterogeneous oscillators in a distributed fashion. The internal dynamics of each oscillator are general enough to capture their time-varying natural frequency as well as physical couplings and unknown bounded terms. A communication layer is set in place to allow the oscillators to exchange synchronizing coupling actions through a tree-like leaderless network. In particular, we present a class of hybrid coupling rules depending only on local information to ensure uniform global practical or asymptotic synchronization, which is impossible to obtain by using the Kuramoto model customarily used in the literature. We further show that the synchronization set can be made uniformly globally prescribed finite-time stable by selecting the coupling function to be discontinuous at the origin. Novel mathematical tools on non-pathological functions and set-valued Lie derivatives are developed to carry out the stability analysis. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated in simulations where we apply our synchronizing hybrid coupling rules to models of power grids previously used in the literature.

Anti-windup coordination strategy around a fair equilibrium in resource sharing networks

This paper aims at coordinating interconnected agents where the control input of each agent is limited by the control input of others. In that sense, the systems have to share a limited resource over a network. Such problems can arise in different areas and it is here motivated by a simplified district heating example. When the shared resource is insufficient for the combined need of all systems, the resource will have to be shared in an optimal fashion. In this scenario, we want the systems to automatically converge to an optimal equilibrium. The contribution of this paper is the proposal of a control architecture where each separate system is controlled by a local PI controller. The controllers are then coordinated through a global rank-one anti-windup signal. It is shown that the equilibrium of the proposed closed-loop system minimizes the infinity-norm of stationary state deviations. Convergence is investigated via a randomized numerical study, and a district heating-inspired example illustrates the utility of the proposed method.

Equivalent Conditions for the Synchronization of Identical Linear Systems over Arbitrary Interconnections

We propose necessary and sufficient conditions for the synchronization of $N$ identical single-input-single-output (SISO) systems, connected through a directed graph {without imposing any assumption on the graph interconnection}. We consider both the continuous-time and the discrete-time case, and we provide conditions that {are equivalent to} the uniform global exponential stability, {with guaranteed convergence rate,} of the closed {and unbounded} attractor that corresponds to the synchronization set.

Finite-time stability properties of Lur'e systems with piecewise continuous nonlinearities

We analyze the stability properties of Lur'e systems with piecewise continuous nonlinearities by exploiting the notion of set-valued Lie derivative for Lur'e-Postnikov Lyapunov functions. We first extend an existing result of the literature to establish the global asymptotic stability of the origin under a more general sector condition. We then present the main results of this work, namely additional conditions under which output and state finite-time stability properties also hold for the considered class of systems. We highlight the relevance of these results by certifying the stability properties of two engineering systems of known interest: mechanical systems affected by friction and cellular neural networks.

Distributed Hybrid Observer With Prescribed Convergence Rate for a Linear Plant Using Multi-Hop Decomposition

With a continuous-time formulation of the multihop decomposition, we propose a distributed hybrid observer for a sensor network where the plant and local observers run in continuous time and the information exchange among the sensing nodes is sampled-data. Process disturbances, measurement noise and communication noise are considered, and we prove that under some necessary detectability assumptions the observer gains can be tuned to guarantee exponential ISS with a prescribeda convergence rate. Simulations illustrate the performance of the proposed observer.

Nonpathological ISS-Lyapunov Functions for Interconnected Differential Inclusions

This article concerns robustness analysis for interconnections of two dynamical systems (described by upper semicontinuous differential inclusions) using a generalized notion of derivatives associated with locally Lipschitz Lyapunov functions obtained from a finite family of differentiable functions. We first provide sufficient conditions for input-to-state stability (ISS) for differential inclusions, using a class of non-smooth (but locally Lipschitz) candidate Lyapunov functions and the concept of Lie generalized derivative. In general our conditions are less conservative than the more common Clarke derivative based conditions. We apply our result to state-dependent switched systems, and to the interconnection of two differential inclusions. As an example, we propose an observer-based controller for certain nonlinear two-mode state-dependent switched systems.

Nonlinear modeling and feedback control of boom barrier automation

We address modeling and control of a gate access automation system. A model of the mechatronic system is derived and identified. Then an approximate explicit feedback linearization scheme is proposed, which ensures almost linear response between the external input and the delivered torque. A nonlinear optimization problem is solved offline to generate a feasible trajectory associated with a feedforward action and a low level feedback controller is designed to track it. The feedback gains can be conveniently tuned by solving a set of convex linear matrix inequalities, performing a multi-objective trade-off between disturbances attenuation and closed-loop performance. Finally, the proposed control strategy is tested on the real system and experimental results show that it can effectively meet the requirements in terms of robustness, load disturbance rejection and tracking performance.

Piecewise structure of Lyapunov functions and densely checked decrease conditions for hybrid systems

We propose a class of locally Lipschitz functions with piecewise structure for use as Lyapunov functions for hybrid dynamical systems. Subject to some regularity of the dynamics, we show that Lyapunov inequalities can be checked only on a dense set and thus we avoid checking them at points of nondifferentiability of the Lyapunov function. Connections to other classes of locally Lipschitz or piecewise regular functions are also discussed and applications to hybrid dynamical systems are included.

Max-Min Lyapunov Functions for Switched Systems and Related Differential Inclusions

Starting from a finite family of continuously differentiable positive definite functions, we study conditions under which a function obtained by max-min combinations is a Lyapunov function, establishing stability for two kinds of nonlinear dynamical systems: a) Differential inclusions where the set-valued right-hand-side comprises the convex hull of a finite number of vector fields, and b) Autonomous switched systems with a state-dependent switching signal. We investigate generalized notions of directional derivatives for these max-min functions, and use them in deriving stability conditions with various degrees of conservatism, where more conservative conditions are numerically more tractable. The proposed constructions also provide nonconvex Lyapunov functions, which are shown to be useful for systems with state-dependent switching that do not admit a convex Lyapunov function. Several examples are included to illustrate the results.
