A Task Force on Strong Coupling Determinations from Event Shapes

The strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$ is a fundamental parameter of the Standard Model. Its precise determination is essential for accurately predicting, studying, and understanding processes at the Large Hadron Collider and future experiments such as the Future Circular Collider. Event shape and correlator observables measured at electron-positron colliders provide one of the cleanest environments for extracting $\alpha_s$, thanks to their sensitivity to $\alpha_s$ and the availability of high-precision data from the Large Electron-Positron Collider. More broadly, such observables provide an ideal setting to develop and test our understanding of the perturbative and non-perturbative elements of Quantum Chromodynamics, which will underpin the field's precision and discovery frontiers for decades to come. Despite these advances, significant discrepancies persist between different determinations of $\alpha_s$ from event shapes, both in the extracted central values and estimated uncertainties. This document motivates the establishment of a dedicated Task Force to coordinate a community-wide effort addressing these open questions. We report on the first two-day meeting held at CERN in November 2025, summarizing the scientific discussion and documenting the experimental analyses identified as priorities during the meeting, as well as the concrete list of tasks to be carried out by the theory community in preparation for future meetings.

Impact of Z-boson transverse-momentum resummation on PDF determination

We study the impact of small-transverse-momentum resummation for neutral-current Drell-Yan lepton-pair production on the determination of collinear parton distribution functions (PDFs). We focus on measurements of the Z-boson transverse-momentum spectrum performed by ATLAS and CMS at the LHC at centre-of-mass energies of 8 and 13 TeV, and include them in PDF fits based on the NNPDF methodology. Theoretical predictions are computed at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD and are supplemented with small-transverse-momentum resummation corrections at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy obtained with RadISH. Missing higher-order uncertainties are accounted for through a theory covariance matrix constructed from renormalisation- and factorisation-scale variations. We first revisit the treatment of the 8 TeV data, replacing the fixed-order predictions used in previous analyses with numerically stable NNLO calculations, and removing the additional numerical uncertainties introduced in earlier fits. We then assess the impact of the 13 TeV measurements, of resummation corrections, and of progressively lowering the minimum cut on the dilepton transverse momentum. We find that resummation improves the description of the Z boson transverse-momentum data and is essential for ensuring the overall consistency of the PDF fits. Nevertheless, it does not conclusively support extending the fitted kinematic region to transverse momenta below a few tens of GeV. The impact of resummation on PDFs is moderate, leading primarily to a stabilisation of the gluon PDF in a kinematic region of relevance for LHC phenomenology. Finally, we comment on the fact that the treatment of correlations among theoretical uncertainties may play a central role in PDF fits to measurements with percent- and sub-percent-level precision.

Top-Antitop Production and Decay at Threshold at the LHC in QCD Perturbation Theory

In this work we consider the production of a top-antitop pair at the LHC when the mass of the pair is relatively near to the nominal threshold, that is to say to twice the top pole mass. In this regime, enhanced perturbative corrections arise that can be computed to all orders in perturbation theory. We present three generators of the NLO+PS kind (Next-to-Leading-Order that can be interfaced to parton showers) that include these threshold enhanced effects. Using these generators we address the following questions: what is the size of enhanced non-relativistic effects that are not already present in the well known NLO and NNLO perturbative results; what is the size of the contribution from these effects that can be loosely attributed to toponium production; and to what extent the finite width of the top quark affects threshold enhanced corrections. Our generators are relevant for the recent observation of enhanced $t{\bar t}$ production near threshold in the pseudoscalar channel by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations.

Boosted Higgs-strahlung off a $W$ boson at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD

The production of a boosted Higgs boson in association with a charged weak ($W$) boson is a key process to scrutinize the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism at hadron colliders. This reaction constitutes the dominant Higgs production channel at large transverse momentum, providing unique sensitivity to Higgs-boson interactions with other Standard Model particles as well as to physics beyond the Standard Model. In this Letter, we present the first fully differential calculation of this important scattering process at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). We find that the N$^3$LO corrections, amounting to approximately $+2\%$ in the boosted regime, generally lie at the edge of or outside the standard scale variation band of the previous perturbative order. The residual dependence of the N$^3$LO prediction on perturbative scales is reduced to below the percent level, marking a milestone for the Higgs precision program.

Constraining the Higgs potential using multi-Higgs production

The Higgs self-couplings remain only weakly constrained by current Large Hadron Collider (LHC) measurements, leaving ample room for physics beyond the Standard Model that could modify the structure of the Higgs potential. Multi-Higgs production processes provide a particularly sensitive probe of deviations in both the Higgs trilinear and quartic self-couplings. In this note, we summarize the current status of next-to-leading-order electroweak (EW) corrections to double-Higgs production computed within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory and Higgs Effective Field Theory frameworks, emphasizing how these calculations introduce sensitivity to the Higgs self-couplings beyond what is accessible at leading order. We discuss the key conceptual and technical differences between the two effective field theory approaches, including their treatment of higher-dimensional operators, renormalization procedures, and the structure of EW~two-loop amplitudes. Despite these differences, both approaches yield broadly consistent constraints, illustrating the complementarity of double- and triple-Higgs measurements. With the high-luminosity LHC and future high-energy colliders on the horizon, these developments and further advances provide an essential foundation for extracting increasingly precise information on the dynamics of EW symmetry breaking.

Spin Correlations in $t{\bar t}$ Production and Decay at the LHC in QCD Perturbation Theory

In this work we consider the QCD predictions for spin correlations in $t\bar{t}$ production in hadronic collisions. In view of recent tensions between experimental data and theoretical calculations, it has been argued that one should include in the predictions also the effects of the production of the $η_t$, i.e. the pseudoscalar $t\bar{t}$ bound state, or alternatively the full effects of the non-relativistic dynamics of the $t\bar{t}$ pair near threshold. This implies the resummation of all corrections that scale like powers of $α_s/v$ (where $v$ is the velocity of the top quark in the $t\bar{t}$ rest frame) which are dominated by values of $v$ of order $α_s$. In this work, we show that, since the observables that are usually considered for these studies are integrated cross sections up to a $t\bar{t}$ mass cut that is not small, it is possible to perform the calculation using perturbation theory, considering only the contributions that scale as the first few powers of $α_s/v$. We examine the implications of our approach by computing corrections to nominal Monte Carlo results for correlation-sensitive observables, and compare them with available data, showing that the tension with data is no longer present.

On Thrust Resummation Ambiguities in $e^+e^-$ Annihilation into Hadrons

In $e^+e^-$ shape-variable studies, and in particular for the case of thrust, fixed-order QCD predictions are typically supplemented with the resummation of contributions enhanced near the two-jet limit. In this work we examine whether different, yet legitimate, resummation prescriptions can induce significant differences in the resulting predictions. This can occur because formally equivalent prescriptions may differ by terms that, although subleading, are characterised by asymptotic expansions and may therefore lead to slow convergence. We first compare two alternative formulations of resummation: the conjugate-space (or Laplace-space) approach, in which resummation is performed in a variable conjugate to thrust, such that the observable factorises exactly in the soft-collinear limit; and the direct-space formulation, where resummation is instead carried out directly in the thrust variable. We show that, at double-logarithmic level, the inverse Laplace transform generates a convergent tower of subleading terms. Starting from leading-logarithmic accuracy, the expansion becomes asymptotic due to the presence of the Landau pole, leading to a mild log-factorial growth of the coefficients. When including the highest available logarithmic order in the resummation, matched to fixed-order results, we still find non-negligible differences between predictions obtained in the two spaces. We then consider a formulation of the resummation that avoids certain approximations commonly used in the derivation of conjugate-space resummation. We observe that this also has a non-negligible numerical impact. In general, we find that the systematics stemming from the adoption of different formalisms typically exceeds the quoted theoretical uncertainties, suggesting the need for more conservative theory-error estimates when using the thrust distribution in determinations of the strong coupling.

Jet Production at NNLO: Exploring a New Scheme

We consider dijet production in $e^+e^-$ collisions and in $H\to b{\bar b}$ decays at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. A new non-local subtraction scheme is applied, for the first time, to obtain the fully differential cross section for these benchmark processes. We discuss and explicitly evaluate the perturbative ingredients needed in the computation, and we compare the performance of different slicing variables to obtain the NNLO corrections.

The Quark Jet Function for $k_T$-like Variables in NNLO QCD

The precise description of jet processes requires observables capable of efficiently capturing the dynamics of the energy flow in hadronic final states. We consider a class of tranverse-momentum like resolution variables that smoothly describe the $n+1$ to $n$ jet transition in multi-jet processes. We discuss a general method for the computation of the corresponding quark jet function at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. Rapidity divergences are regulated by using a time-like auxiliary vector. We present explicit results for a variant of $y_{23}$ in the $E$-scheme and in the WTA scheme.

Exploring high-purity multi-parton scattering at hadron colliders

Multi-parton interactions are a fascinating phenomenon that occur in almost every high-energy hadron--hadron collision, yet are remarkably difficult to study quantitatively. In this letter we present a strategy to optimally disentangle multi-parton interactions from the primary scattering in a collision. That strategy enables probes of multi-parton interactions that are significantly beyond the state of the art, including their characteristic momentum scale, the interconnection between primary and secondary scatters, and the pattern of three and potentially even more simultaneous hard scatterings. This opens a path to powerful new constraints on multi-parton interactions for LHC phenomenology and to the investigation of their rich field-theoretical structure.

Exploring slicing variables for jet processes

We consider the class of inclusive hadron collider processes in which one or more energetic jets are produced, possibly accompanied by colourless particles. We provide a general formulation of a slicing scheme for this class of processes, by identifying the various contributions that need to be computed up to next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD perturbation theory. We focus on two novel observables, the one-jet resolution variable $ΔE_t$ and the $n$-jet resolution variable $k_{T}^{\mathrm{ness}}$, and explicitly compute all the ingredients needed to carry out NLO computations using these variables. We contrast the behaviour of these variables when the slicing parameter becomes small. In the case of $k_{T}^{\mathrm{ness}}$ we also present results for the hadroproduction of multiple jets.

Matching NNLO to parton shower using N$^3$LL colour-singlet transverse momentum resummation in GENEVA

We extend the GENEVA Monte Carlo framework using the transverse momentum of a colour-singlet system as the resolution variable. This allows us to use next-to-next-to-next-to leading logarithm (N$^3$LL) resummation via the \radish formalism to obtain precise predictions for any colour-singlet production process at the fully exclusive level. Thanks to the implementation of two different resolution variables within the GENEVA framework, we are able to assess the impact of such a choice on differential observables for the first time. As a first application we present predictions for Drell-Yan lepton pair production at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD interfaced to a parton shower simulation that includes additional all-order radiative corrections. We provide fully showered and hadronised events using PYTHIA8, while retaining the NNLO QCD accuracy for observables which are inclusive over the additional radiation. We also show that it is possible to obtain a numerically good agreement between showered GENEVA predictions and the N$^3$LL resummation for the transverse momentum spectrum by choosing a more local recoil scheme. We compare our final predictions to LHC data at 13 TeV, finding good agreement across several distributions.

Subleading power corrections for event shape variables in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation

We consider subleading power corrections to event shape variables in $e^+e^-$ collisions at the first order in the QCD coupling $α_s$. We start from the jettiness variable $τ_2$ and the $y_{23}$ resolution variable for the $k_T$ jet clustering algorithm and we analytically compute the corresponding cumulative cross section. We investigate the origin of the different power suppressed contributions in the two-jet limit and trace it back to their different coverage of the phase space. We extend our analysis to the case of thrust and of the $C$-parameter, and we finally discuss a class of observables that depend on a continuous parameter giving different weight to central and forward emissions and we evaluate the corresponding subleading power corrections.

Resummation of combined QCD-electroweak effects in Drell Yan lepton-pair production

We consider neutral- and charged-current Drell Yan lepton-pair production at hadron colliders, and include dominant classes of electroweak and mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to all orders in perturbation theory. The accurate description of these physical effects is vital for a precise determination of fundamental Standard Model parameters, such as the $W$-boson mass and the electroweak mixing angle, as well as for a solid assessment of the associated theoretical uncertainties. Our state-of-the-art resummation reaches next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy in both the electroweak and the mixed QCD-electroweak perturbative expansions, including constant terms at first order beyond Born level in both couplings, i.e. at order $α$ and $α_s α$. These effects are incorporated on top of QCD predictions at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy, which include constant terms at third order in the strong coupling. Our results retain, for the first time at this accuracy, full dependence on the kinematics of the final-state leptons, thereby enabling a realistic comparison with experimental analyses at the differential level in presence of fiducial cuts. We present a phenomenological analysis of the impact of electroweak corrections in relevant observables at the LHC. We find visible shape distortions in resummation-dominated kinematical regions with respect to pure-QCD predictions, highlighting the importance of a complete description, not limited to QCD, for precision Drell Yan physics.

Determination of the $W$-boson mass at hadron colliders

We introduce an observable relevant for the determination of the $W$-boson mass $m_W$ at hadron colliders. This observable is defined as an asymmetry around the jacobian peak of the charged-lepton transverse-momentum distribution in the charged-current Drell-Yan process. We discuss the observable's theoretical prediction, presenting results at different orders in QCD, and showing its perturbative stability. Its definition as a single scalar number and its linear sensitivity to $m_W$ allow a clean extraction of the latter and a straightforward discussion of the associated theoretical systematics: a perturbative QCD uncertainty of ${\cal O}(\pm 5)$ MeV on $m_W$ can be established by means of this observable, relying solely on charged-current Drell-Yan information. Owing to its relatively inclusive nature, the observable displays desirable properties also from the experimental viewpoint, especially for the unfolding of detector effects. We show that a measurement of this observable can lead to a competitive experimental error on $m_W$ at the LHC.

Associated production of a $W$ boson and massive bottom quarks at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD

We present the first calculation for the hadroproduction of a $W$ boson in association with a massive bottom ($b$) quark-antiquark pair at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD perturbation theory. We exploit the hierarchy between the $b$ quark mass and the characteristic energy scale of the process to obtain a reliable analytic expression for the two-loop virtual amplitude with three massive legs, starting from the corresponding result available for massless bottom quarks. The use of massive $b$ quarks avoids the ambiguities associated with the correct flavour assignment in massless calculations, paving the way to a more realistic comparison with experimental data. We present phenomenological results considering proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV for inclusive $Wb \bar b$ production and within a fiducial region relevant for the associated production of a $W$ boson and a Higgs boson decaying into a $b \bar b$ pair, for which $Wb \bar b$ production represents one of the most relevant backgrounds. We find that the NNLO corrections are substantial and that their inclusion is mandatory to obtain reliable predictions.

Predictions for Neutrinos and New Physics from Forward Heavy Hadron Production at the LHC

Scenarios with new physics particles feebly interacting with the Standard Model sector provide compelling candidates for dark matter searches. Geared with a set of new experiments for the detection of neutrinos and long-lived particles the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has joined the hunt for these elusive states. On the theoretical side, this emerging physics program requires reliable estimates of the associated particle fluxes, in particular those arising from heavy hadron decays. In this work, we provide state-of-the-art QCD predictions for heavy hadron production including radiative corrections at next-to-leading order and using parton distribution functions including small-$x$ resummation at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We match our predictions to parton showers to provide a realistic description of hadronisation effects. We demonstrate the utility of our predictions by presenting the energy spectrum of neutrinos from charm hadron decays. Furthermore, we employ our predictions to estimate, for the first time, FASER's sensitivity to electrophilic ALPs, which are predominantly generated in beauty hadron decays.

Addendum to: Constraints on the quartic Higgs self-coupling from double-Higgs production at future hadron colliders

We study inclusive double-Higgs boson production at the LHC and at the HL-LHC including variations of the trilinear and of the quartic Higgs boson self-couplings at next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD with full top quark mass dependence. Our results include the two-loop contributions to the $gg \rightarrow HH$ amplitudes that involve a modified $h_4$ vertex calculated in arXiv:1810.04665. We present results at 13, 13.6 and 14 TeV centre-of-mass energies. The implementation of the calculation is made publicly available in the POWHEG-BOX-V2 Monte Carlo framework.
