A new characterization of right keys, and the $m$-symmetric Schur functions at $t=0$

The ring $R_m$ of $m$-symmetric functions consists of the formal power series that are symmetric in the variables $x_{m+1},x_{m+2},\dots$ but carry no symmetry in the first $m$ variables. We develop a combinatorial theory for the specialization at $t=0$ of the Schur functions of $R_m$. Our main tool is a new characterization of right key tableaux as suprema of the sets of decreasing subwords of the reading words of the subtableaux of $T$. Being invariant under elementary Knuth transformations, this characterization is compatible with the RSK correspondence. We obtain in this way a generating function over semistandard tableaux for the $m$-symmetric Schur functions at $t=0$, together with a combinatorial proof of a Cauchy identity in $R_m$. The $m$-symmetric Schur functions and their dual are then respectively identified with Demazure atoms and Demazure characters. Restricted to the last $m$ variables, our correspondence specializes to a proof, by ordinary RSK, of Lascoux's nonsymmetric Cauchy identity for Demazure characters and atoms. As further applications, we relate the $m$-symmetric Schur functions at $t=0$ to the almost symmetric Schur functions through a unitriangular change-of-basis matrix, obtain tableau generating functions and Cauchy identities for both families, and derive Jacobi-Trudi type determinantal formulas for three different bases.

A proof of the $m$-Symmetric Macdonald positivity at $t=1$

We prove, in the case $t=1$, the extension to the $m$-symmetric world of the original Macdonald positivity conjecture. This is achieved by giving a combinatorial interpretation of the Kostka coefficients $K_{\Omega \Lambda}(q,1)$ in terms of standard fillings of the diagram associated to the $m$-partition $\Omega$. This interpretation generalizes the one in the usual Macdonald case, which is given by a major index statistic on standard tableaux.

A memorial tribute: Adriano Garsia (1928--2024)

Adriano Mario Garsia was born in Tunis on August 20, 1928, to a Tunisian-Italian family. He lived on a farm there until the end of World War II, then moved to Rome. After finishing high school, he was sent to the United States to live with relatives in Woyming and eventually made his way to California, becoming a student of Charles Loewner at Stanford in the early 1950s. Following his Ph.D., Adriano held positions at MIT, the University of Minnesota, and Caltech before joining the nascent mathematics department at the University of California, San Diego, in 1966 where he spent the remainder of his career. He passed away in San Diego on October 6, 2024, at the age of 96.

Reach together: How populations win repeated games

In repeated games, players choose actions concurrently at each step. We consider a parameterized setting of repeated games in which the players form a population of an arbitrary size. Their utility functions encode a reachability objective. The problem is whether there exists a uniform coalition strategy for the players so that they are sure to win independently of the population size. We use algebraic tools to show that the problem can be solved in polynomial space. First we exhibit a finite semigroup whose elements summarize strategies over a finite interval of population sizes. Then, we characterize the existence of winning strategies by the existence of particular elements in this semigroup. Finally, we provide a matching complexity lower bound, to conclude that repeated population games with reachability objectives are PSPACE-complete.

Fundamental quasisymmetric functions in superspace

The fundamental quasisymmetric functions in superspace are a generalization of the fundamental quasisymmetric functions involving anticommuting variables. We obtain the action of the product, coproduct, and antipode on the fundamental quasisymmetric functions in superspace. We also extend to superspace the well known expansion of the Schur functions in terms of fundamental quasisymmetric functions.

The $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials

The $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials form a basis of the space of polynomials that are symmetric in the variables $x_{m+1},x_{m+2},\dots$ (while having no special symmetry in the variables $x_1,\dots,x_m$).We establish in this article the fundamental properties of the $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials. These include among other things the orthogonality with respect to a natural scalar product, as well as formulas for the squared norm, the evaluation, and the inclusion. We also obtain a Cauchy-type identity for the $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials which specializes to the known Cauchy-type identity for the non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials.

Symmetry and Pieri rules for the bisymmetric Macdonald polynomials

Bisymmetric Macdonald polynomials can be obtained through a process of antisymmetrization and $t$-symmetrization of non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials. Using the double affine Hecke algebra, we show that the evaluation of the bisymmetric Macdonald polynomials satisfies a symmetry property generalizing that satisfied by the usual Macdonald polynomials. We then obtain Pieri rules for the bisymmetric Macdonald polynomials where the sums are over certain vertical strips.

$m$-Symmetric functions, non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials and positivity conjectures

We study the space, $R_m$, of $m$-symmetric functions consisting of polynomials that are symmetric in the variables $x_{m+1},x_{m+2},x_{m+3},\dots$ but have no special symmetry in the variables $x_1,\dots,x_m$. We obtain $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials by $t$-symmetrizing non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials, and show that they form a basis of $R_m$. We define $m$-symmetric Schur functions through a somewhat complicated process involving their dual basis, tableaux combinatorics, and the Hecke algebra generators, and then prove some of their most elementary properties. We conjecture that the $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials (suitably normalized and plethystically modified) expand positively in terms of $m$-symmetric Schur functions. We obtain relations on the $(q,t)$-Koska coefficients $K_{\Omega \Lambda}(q,t)$ in the $m$-symmetric world, and show in particular that the usual $(q,t)$-Koska coefficients are special cases of the $K_{\Omega \Lambda}(q,t)$'s. Finally, we show that when $m$ is large, the positivity conjecture, modulo a certain subspace, becomes a positivity conjecture on the expansion of non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials in terms of non-symmetric Hall-Littlewood polynomials.

Multi-Macdonald polynomials

We introduce Macdonald polynomials indexed by $n$-tuples of partitions and characterized by certain orthogonality and triangularity relations. We prove that they can be explicitly given as products of ordinary Macdonald polynomials depending on special alphabets. With this factorization in hand, we establish their most basic properties, such as explicit formulas for their norm-squared, evaluation and reproducing kernel. Moreover, we show that the $q,t$-Kostka coefficients associated to the multi-Macdonald polynomials are positive and correspond to $q,t$-analogs of the dimensions of the irreducible representations of $C_n \sim S_d$, the wreath product of the cyclic group $C_n$ with the symmetric group.

Hopf algebra structure of symmetric and quasisymmetric functions in superspace

We show that the ring of symmetric functions in superspace is a cocommutative and self-dual Hopf algebra. We provide formulas for the action of the coproduct and the antipode on various bases of that ring. We introduce the ring sQSym of quasisymmetric functions in superspace and show that it is a Hopf algebra. We give explicitly the product, coproduct and antipode on the basis of monomial quasisymmetric functions in superspace. We prove that the Hopf dual of sQSym, the ring sNSym of noncommutative symmetric functions in superspace, has a multiplicative basis dual to the monomial quasisymmetric functions in superspace.

Symmetric functions in superspace: a compendium of results and open problems (including a SageMath worksheet)

We present a review of the most important results in the theory of symmetric functions in superspace (or symmetric superpolynomials), summarizing all principal contributions since its introduction in 2001 in the context of the supersymmetric Calogero-Moser-Sutherland integrable model. We also mention some open problems which remain unanswered at this moment, in particular the connection with representation theory. In addition, we provide a free open access source code, relying on SageMath library, that can be used as a research tool for symmetric superpolynomials. The content is directed to an audience new to this research area, but who is familiar with the classical theory of symmetric functions.

The norm and the evaluation of the Macdonald polynomials in superspace

We demonstrate the validity of previously conjectured explicit expressions for the norm and the evaluation of the Macdonald polynomials in superspace. These expressions, which involve the arm-lengths and leg-lengths of the cells in certain Young diagrams, specialize to the well known formulas for the norm and the evaluation of the usual Macdonald polynomials.

The N=2 supersymmetric Calogero-Sutherland model and its eigenfunctions

In a recent work, we have initiated the theory of N=2 symmetric superpolynomials. As far as the classical bases are concerned, this is a rather straightforward generalization of the N=1 case. However this construction could not be generalized to the formulation of Jack superpolynomials. The origin of this obstruction is unraveled here, opening the path for building the desired Jack extension. Those are shown to be obtained from the non-symmetric Jack polynomials by a suitable symmetrization procedure and an appropriate dressing by the anticommuting variables. This construction is substantiated by the characterization of the N=2 Jack superpolynomials as the eigenfunctions of the N=2 supersymmetric version of the Calogero-Sutherland model, for which, as a side result, we demonstrate the complete integrability by displaying the explicit form of four towers of mutually commuting (bosonic) conserved quantities. The N=2 Jack superpolynomials are orthogonal with respect to the analytical scalar product (induced by the quantum-mechanical formulation) as well as a new combinatorial scalar product defined on a suitable deformation of the power-sum basis.

$\mathfrak {osp}(1,2)$ and generalized Bannai-Ito algebras

Generalizations of the (rank 1) Bannai-Ito algebra are obtained from a refinement of the grade involution of the Lie super algebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1,2)$. A hyperoctahedral extension is derived by using a realization of $\mathfrak{osp}(1,2)$ in terms of Dunkl operators associated to the Weyl group $B_3$.

Pieri rules for Schur functions in superspace

The Schur functions in superspace $s_\Lambda$ and $\bar s_\Lambda$ are the limits $q=t=0$ and $q=t=\infty$ respectively of the Macdonald polynomials in superspace. We prove Pieri rules for the bases $s_\Lambda$ and $\bar s_{\Lambda}$ (which happen to be essentially dual). As a consequence, we derive the basic properties of these bases such as dualities, monomial expansions, and tableaux generating functions.

From Jack to Double Jack Polynomials via the Supersymmetric Bridge

The Calogero-Sutherland model occurs in a large number of physical contexts, either directly or via its eigenfunctions, the Jack polynomials. The supersymmetric counterpart of this model, although much less ubiquitous, has an equally rich structure. In particular, its eigenfunctions, the Jack superpolynomials, appear to share the very same remarkable combinatorial and structural properties as their non-supersymmetric version. These super-functions are parametrized by superpartitions with fixed bosonic and fermionic degrees. Now, a truly amazing feature pops out when the fermionic degree is sufficiently large: the Jack superpolynomials stabilize and factorize. Their stability is with respect to their expansion in terms of an elementary basis where, in the stable sector, the expansion coefficients become independent of the fermionic degree. Their factorization is seen when the fermionic variables are stripped off in a suitable way which results in a product of two ordinary Jack polynomials (somewhat modified by plethystic transformations), dubbed the double Jack polynomials. Here, in addition to spelling out these results, which were first obtained in the context of Macdonal superpolynomials, we provide a heuristic derivation of the Jack superpolynomial case by performing simple manipulations on the supersymmetric eigen-operators, rendering them independent of the number of particles and of the fermionic degree. In addition, we work out the expression of the Hamiltonian which characterizes the double Jacks. This Hamiltonian, which defines a new integrable system, involves not only the expected Calogero-Sutherland pieces but also combinations of the generators of an underlying affine ${\widehat{\mathfrak {sl}}_2}$ algebra.

Superconformal field theory and Jack superpolynomials

We uncover a deep connection between the $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theory in 2D and eigenfunctions of the supersymmetric Sutherland model known as Jack superpolynomials (sJacks). Specifically, the singular vector at level $rs/2$ of the Kac module labeled by the two integers $r$ and $s$ are given explicitly as a sum of sJacks whose indexing diagrams are contained in a rectangle with $r$ columns and $s$ rows As a second compelling evidence for the distinguished status of the sJack-basis in SCFT, we find that the degenerate Whittaker vectors (Gaiotto states) can be expressed as a remarkably simple linear combination of sJacks. As a consequence, we are able to reformulate the supersymmetric version of the (degenerate) AGT conjecture in terms of the combinatorics of sJacks. Note that the closed-form formulas for the singular vectors and the degenerate Whittaker vectors, although only conjectured in general, have been heavily tested (in some cases, up to level 33/2). Note also that both the Neveu-Schwarz and Ramond sectors are treated.

Charge on tableaux and the poset of k-shapes

A poset on a certain class of partitions known as k-shapes was recently introduced to provide a combinatorial rule for the expansion of a (k-1)-Schur functions into k-Schur functions at t=1. The main ingredient in this construction was a bijection, which we call the weak bijection, that associates to a k-tableau a pair made out of a (k-1)-tableau and a path in the poset of k-shapes. We define here a concept of charge on k-tableaux (which conjecturally gives a combinatorial interpretation for the expansion coefficients of Hall-Littlewood polynomials into k-Schur functions), and show that it is compatible in the standard case with the weak bijection. In particular, we obtain that the usual charge of a standard tableau of size n is equal to the sum of the charges of its corresponding paths in the poset of k-shapes, for k=2,3...n.
