Superconductivity in Al-based high-entropy alloys TiHfNbTaAl and TaNbHfZrAl

Since the first report of a high entropy alloy (HEA) superconductor in 2014, HEAs have continued to captivate the interest of superconducting researchers. Owing to the significant degree of disorder inherent in these systems, they serve as exemplary models for examining the properties of materials that exist in states intermediate between crystalline and amorphous structures. Here we present the superconductivity properties and crystal structure of TaNbHfZrAl and TiHfNbTaAl HEAs, which both have the VEC of 4.2 and body centered cubic (BCC) structure. Through resistivity, magnetic, and specific heat measurements, we prove that both samples are the bulk type-II superconductors with a critical temperature Tc of 5.5 K for TaNbHfZrAl and Tc of 3.2 K for TiHfNbTaAl. The Tc of HEA superconductors is influenced by the VEC and the element composition. And the incorporation of Al in high disorder HEA superconductors causes a more crystallinelike Tc dependence.

Strongly correlated electronic superconductivity in the noncentrosymmetric Re-Os-based high/medium-entropy alloys

The class of unconventional superconductors, particularly noncentrosymmetric superconductors, has been highly considered as potential materials for understanding the complex properties of quantum materials. Here, five previously unreported Re3.5Os3.5Ta0.5Hf0.5Nb3, Re3Os3Ta0.5Hf0.5Nb3, Re3.5Os3.5Mo0.5Hf0.5Nb3, Re3.5Os3.5Mo0.5W0.5Nb3, and Re3Os3Mo0.5Hf0.5Nb3 Re-Os-based high/medium-entropy alloys (MEAs-HEAs) with valence electron count ranging from 6.45 to 6.81 were synthesized and investigated using x-ray diffraction, transport, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. Our analyses confirm that all five compounds crystallize in a noncentrosymmetric {\alpha}-Mn-type structure and exhibit type-II superconductivity with Tc values from 4.20 K to 5.11 K, respectively. Unexpectedly, despite being immersed in an acidic environment for one month, the structures and superconducting properties of HEAs remain stable. Our findings indicate that the Tc increases with an increasing valence electron count in MEAs-HEAs. Furthermore, these noncentrosymmetric {\alpha}-Mn-type HEA superconductors have large Kadowaki-Woods ratios (KWR), implying the presence of strong electronic correlations.

Strong correlation behavior and Strong coupling superconductivity in (Ti1/4Hf1/4Nb1/4Ta1/4)1-xNix with the rich magnetic element Ni

Searching for new superconductors, especially unconventional superconductors, has been studied extensively for decades but remains one of the major outstanding challenges in condensed matter physics. Medium/high-entropy alloys (MEAs-HEAs) are new fertile soils of unconventional superconductors and generate widespread interest and questions on the existence of superconductivity in highly disordered materials. Here, we report on the effect of Ni-doped on the crystal structure and superconductivity properties of strongly coupled TiHfNbTa MEA. XRD results indicate that the maximum solid solution of (Ti1/4Hf1/4Nb1/4Ta1/4)1-xNix is about 7.7%. Resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements demonstrated that (Ti1/4Hf1/4Nb1/4Ta1/4)1-xNix HEAs are all bulk type-II superconductors and follow the trend of the increase of Tc with the increase of Ni-doped contents. The specific heat jump of all (Ti1/4Hf1/4Nb1/4Ta1/4)1-xNix are much larger than the BCS value of 1.43, suggesting all these HEAs are strongly coupled superconductors. Additionally, large Kadawaki-Woods ratio values suggest that there is a strong electron correlation effect in this system. The (Ti1/4Hf1/4Nb1/4Ta1/4)1-xNix HEA system is a new ideal material platform for the study of strong correlation behavior and strongly coupled superconductivity, which provides an insight into the physics of high-temperature superconductors or other unconventional superconductors.

Ambient-pressure superconductivity onset at 10 K and robust Tc under high pressure in TiNbTaN3 medium-entropy nitride

Superconductivity has been one of the focal points in medium and high-entropy alloys (MEAs-HEAs) since the first discovery of the HEA superconductor in 2014. Until now, most HEAs' superconducting transition temperature (Tc) has not exceeded 10 K. Here we report the first observation of superconductivity in a bulk medium-entropy nitride (MEN), TiNbTaN3, which shows a Tc of 10 K at ambient pressure. Notably, the electronic specific heat coefficient {\gamma}(H) exhibits nonlinear H-dependence behavior, which is similar to other well-studied multigap superconductors. Furthermore, TiNbTaN3 exhibits extraordinary pressure resilience, maintaining robust superconductivity under high-pressure conditions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that pressure exerts a negligible impact on the electronic structures of TiNbTaN3, thereby corroborating the experimental observations. These findings not only advance our understanding of emergent phenomena in entropy-stabilized nitrides but also establish a new material platform for finding more high-Tc superconductors with combinations of 4d/5d transition metal elements and light elements, motivating further investigations into high-entropy functional ceramics for extreme environment applications.

Superconductivity in the Medium-Entropy/High-Entropy Re-based Alloys with a Non-Centrosymmetric $\alpha$-Mn Lattice

Medium or high-entropy alloys (MEAs-HEAs) and rhenium-based compounds with a non-centrosymmetric (NC) structure have received a lot of attention for offering a fertile soil in search for unconventional superconductivity. Here, five previously unreported NC Re-based MEA-HEA superconductors with an $\alpha$-Mn lattice are successfully synthesized, with their superconducting transition temperatures (Tcs) ranging from 4 to 5 K. An increase in the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) can be achieved by modulating the valence electron count (VEC) through compositional adjustments. Magnetization measurements confirm that all the synthesized Re-based MEA-HEAs are bulk type-II superconductors. Specific heat analysis reveals that the superconducting state of these HEAs can be well described by a single-gap s-wave model. Our results show that the Kadowaki-Woods ratio of these $\alpha$-Mn MEA/HEA superconductors are close to the typical value of heavy fermion compounds, suggesting the existence of strong electronic correlation. These findings provide promising material platforms to study the role of high disorder in the origin of superconductivity in the NC MEAs-HEAs.

Large upper critical fields and strong coupling superconductivity in the medium-entropy alloy (Ti1/3Hf1/3Ta1/3)1-xNbx

Since the discovery of high-entropy superconductors in 2014, superconductivity has remained a focal point of interest in medium- and high-entropy alloys (MEAs-HEAs). Here, we report a series of (Ti0.33Hf0.33Ta0.33)1-xNbx MEA superconductors crystallized in the BCC structure, whose superconductivity was characterized by resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. The study found that the (Ti0.33Hf0.33Ta0.33)1-xNbx MEAs exhibit bulk superconductivity. With the doping of Nb, the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) increases from 5.31 K to 9.11 K, and the normalized Cel jumps at Tc, and the logarithmically averaged characteristic phonon frequency exhibit dome-shaped curves. Results from specific heat measurements indicate that the superconductivity is of a strongly coupled s-wave type observed. Furthermore, at low Nb content, the upper critical field of the samples is larger than the Pauli paramagnetic limit. The strongly coupling behavior and large upper critical field in s-wave type (Ti0.33Hf0.33Ta0.33)1-xNbx MEA superconductors are unusual, as they typically occur in other unconventional superconductors. Thus, (Ti0.33Hf0.33Ta0.33)1-xNbx may have significant potential in the research and understanding of physical mechanisms.

Superconductivity in the medium entropy alloys Nb2TiW and Nb2TiMo

This study describes the synthesis and characterization of Nb2TiW and Nb2TiMo medium entropy alloys (MEAs). The Nb2TiW and Nb2TiMo MEAs can be successfully synthesized by an arc melting method. Their structures and superconducting properties are investigated by detailed characterization of X ray diffraction (XRD), resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. XRD results confirm that the obtained Nb2TiW and Nb2TiMo compounds have the same body-centered cubic (BCC) structures. Experimental results show that the superconducting transition temperatures Tcs of Nb2TiW and Nb2TiMo are around 4.86 K and 3.22 K, respectively. The upper and lower critical fields of Nb2TiW are 3.52(2) T and 53.36(2) Oe, respectively, and those of Nb2TiMo are 2.11(2) T and 68.23(3) Oe, respectively. First-principles calculations reveal that the d electrons of Nb, Ti, and Mo or W are the dominant contribution of the density of states near the Fermi level. Specific heat measurement results indicate that Nb2TiW and Nb2TiMo display BCS full-gap s-wave superconductivity.

Effects of Lanthanides on the Structure and Oxygen Permeability of Ti-doped Dual-phase Membranes

The trade-off effect of the oxygen permeability and stability of oxygen transport membranes (OTMs) still exists in working atmospheres containing CO2. Herein, we reported a new series of 60 wt%Ce0.9Ln0.1O2-{\delta}-40wt%Ln0.6Sr0.4Fe0.9Ti0.1O3-{\delta} (CLnO-LnSFTO, Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb) dual-phase OTMs by selecting different Ln elements based on the reported highly stable Ti-doped CPrO-PrSFTO. The effects of different Ln elements on the structure and oxygen permeability of Ti-doped dual-phase OTMs were systematically studied. Basically, as the atomic number of Ln elements increases, the unit cell parameters of both the fluorite phase and the perovskite phase become smaller. The unit cell volume and spatial symmetry of the perovskite phase are reduced, resulting in a reduction in oxygen permeability. The optimal CLaO-LaSFTO showed JO2 of 0.60 and 0.54 mL min-1 cm-2 with He and CO2 sweeping at 1000 oC, respectively. In addition, all CLnO-LnSFTO OTMs could work for more than 100 hours with no significant performance degradation in a CO2 atmosphere, maintaining excellent stability. This work explores candidate OTM materials for CO2 capture and oxygen separation, as well as provides some ideas for addressing the trade-off effect.

A new approach to N-doped di-molybdenum carbide with enhanced superconductivity via Urea

Chemical doping is a critical factor in the development of new superconductors or optimizing the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of the parent superconducting materials. Herein, a new simple urea approach is developed to synthesize the N-doped alfa-Mo2C. Benefiting from the simple urea method, a broad superconducting dome is found in the Mo2C1-xNx compositions. XRD results show that the structure of alfa-Mo2C remains unchanged and that there is a variation of lattice parameters with nitrogen doping. Resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurement results confirm that the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) was strongly increased from 2.68 K (x = 0) to 7.05 K (x = 0.49). First-principles calculations and our analysis indicate that increasing nitrogen doping leads to a rise in the density of states at the Fermi level and doping-induced phonon softening, which enhances electron-phonon coupling. This results in an increase in Tc and a sharp rise in the upper critical field. Our findings provide a promising strategy for fabricating transition metal carbonitrides and provide a material platform for further study of the superconductivity of transition metal carbides.

Mapping Hydrogen Evolution Activity Trends of V-based A15 Superconducting Alloys

Exploring high-efficiency and low-cost electrocatalysts is valuable for water-splitting technologies. Recently, Si-group compounds have attracted increasing attention in electrocatalysis, considering the abundant Si-group elements on Earth. However, Si-group compounds for HER electrocatalysis have not been systematically studied. In this study, we unveil the activity trends of non-noble metal catalyst A15-type V3M (i.e., V3Si, V3Ge, and V3Sn) superconductors and show that V3Si is the most efficient HER catalyst because of the high electronic conductivity and suitable d-band center. Among them, the V3Si only requires 33.4 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2, and only 57.6 mV and 114.6 mV are required to attain a high current density of 100 mA cm-2 and 500 mA cm-2, respectively. These low overpotentials are close to the 34.3 mV at 10 mA cm-2 of state-of-art Pt/C (20 %) but superior to 168.5 mV of Pt/C (20 %) at 100 mA cm-2. Furthermore, the V3Si illustrates exceptional durability with no obvious decay in the 120 h at the different current densities (i.e., 10 - 250 mA cm-2). The excellent HER activity of V3Si alloy can be ascribed to the synergies of superior electronic conductivity and suitable d-band center. Moreover, DFT calculations reveal that the absolute hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy is decreased after introducing the V to Si. Beyond offering a stable and high-performance electrocatalyst in an acidic medium, this work inspires the rational design of desirable silicide electrocatalysts.

Excellent and CO$_2$$_{0.85}$Nd$_{0.1}$Cu$_{0.05}$O$_{2-\delta}$-Nd$_x$Sr$_{1-x}$Fe$_{1-y}$Cu$_y$O$_{3-\delta}$ dual-phase oxygen transport membranes

Oxygen transport membranes(OTMs)have provided great opportunities in the last decades but are suffering from the trade-off effect between stability and oxygen permeability. Here, we report a group of new planar dual-phase mixed ionic-electronic conducting (MIEC) OTMs consisting of CO$_2$$_{0.85}$Nd$_{0.1}$Cu$_{0.05}$O$_2$ (CNCO) and Nd$_x$Sr$_{1-x}$Fe$_{1-y}$Cu$_y$O$_3$(NSFCO; $x = 0.4, 0.6$; $y = 0.05, 0.1$) phases, showing excellent oxygen permeability while comparable CO$_2$-resistant stability. The substitution of Cu as a bifunctional additive decreases the sintering temperature and enhances bulk diffusion and oxygen permeability with the co-doping of Nd.The oxygen permeation fluxes reached 2.62 and 1.52 mL min$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ at 1000$^\circ$C through the optimal 60wt%Ce0.85Nd0.1Cu0.05O2-40wt%Nd0.4Sr0.6Fe0.9Cu0.1O3 (CNCO-NSFCO41) composition with He and CO$_2$ sweeping, respectively, higher than all reported dense dual-phase OTMs. Such excellent CO$_2$-tolerant permeability meets the needs of potential industrial applications. Analysis with Zhu's oxygen permeation model shows lower bulk diffusion resistance of CNCO-NSFCO41 than that of reported 60wt%Ce0.85Pr0.1Cu0.05O2-40wt%Pr0.4Sr0.6Fe0.9Cu0.1O3(CPCO-PSFCO41)and more limitation by the interfacial exchange at high temperature. All the prepared OTMs also show good long-term stability over 100 hours in both atmospheres. Our results confirm the excellent oxygen permeability and stability under a high-concentration CO2 atmosphere, providing a material candidate for CO2 capture in oxyfuel combustion.

Non-trivial Topological Surface States Regulation of 1T-OsCoTe$_2$ Enables Selective C-C Coupling for Highly Efficient Photochemical CO$_2$ Reduction Toward C$_{2+}$ hydrocarbons

Despite ongoing research, the rational design of nontrivial topological semimetal surface states for the selective photocatalytic CO$_2$ conversion into valuable products remains full of challenges. Herein, we present the synthesis of 1T-OsCoTe$_2$ for the photoreduction upgrading of CO$_2$ to tricarbon alkane C$_3$H$_8$,by the integration of experimental work and theory calculation. Experimental studies suggested a high electron based selectivity of 71.2% for C$_3$H$_8$ and an internal quantum efficiency of 54.6% at 380 nm. In-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy demonstrated that Co and Os atoms coordinated with Te atoms enable an efficient Os-Te-Co electron transfer to activate the generation of *CH$_3$,*CHOCO and *CH$_2$OCOCO. Density functional theory calculations further confirmed Os-Te-Co electron bridging on the improved CO$_2$ conversion kinetics. To our knowledge, this is the first report suggesting the role of Os atoms in accelerating the photocatalytic CO$_2$ conversion activity of the topological semimetal 1T-OsCoTe$_2$.

Revealing the nontrivial topological surface states of catalysts for effective photochemical carbon dioxide conversion

Topological semimetals with protected surface states mark a new paradigm of research beyond the early landmarks of band-structure engineering, allowing fabrication of efficient catalyst to harness the rich metallic surface states to activate specific chemical processes. Herein, we demonstrate a facile solid-phase method for in-situ doping of Ir at the Os sites in the Os3Sn7, an alloy with topological states, which significantly improves the photocatalytic performance for the reduction of CO2 to CO and CH4. Experimental evidence combined with theoretical calculations reveal that the nontrivial topological surface states greatly accelerate charge-separation/electron-enrichment and adsorption/activation of CO2 molecules, rendering highly efficient reaction channels to stimulate the formation of *COOH and *CO, as well CHO*. This work shows the promise of achieving high photocatalytic performances with synthesizing topological catalysts and provides hints on the design of novel topological catalysts with superior photoactivity towards the CO2 reduction reaction.

Structural and Superconducting Properties in the Te-doped Spinel CuRh2Se4

In this paper, we discuss the impact of tellurium (Te) doping on the spinel superconductor CuRh2Se4. We conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the structural and superconducting properties of the system using various techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. Based on our XRD analysis, we found that the spinel superconductor CuRh2Se4-xTex crystallizes in the space group Fd3m(227) with x in the region of 0 to 0.28, while the layered compound CuRh2Se4-xTex crystallizes in the space group P3m1 (164) with x in the region of 2.8 to 4.0. The upper critical magnetic field can be increased from 0.95(2) T for CuRh2Se4 to 3.44(1) T for CuRh2Se3.72Te0.28 by doping with elemental Te. However, the layered compound CuRh2Se4-xTex did not exhibit superconducting properties. Besides, the specific heat measurements of CuRh2Se4-xTex (x = 0, 0.1, 0.28) indicate that the Te element doping affects the electronic structure and interactions of the material and breaks the stability of the superconducting pairing, which leads to a decrease in the Tc. Finally, we show the electronic phase diagram of Tc with Te doping to summarise our findings.

Superconductivity of the New Medium-Entropy Alloy V4Ti2W with a Body-Centered Cubic Structure

Medium- and high-entropy alloy (MEA and HEA) superconductors have attracted considerable interest since their discovery. This paper reports the superconducting properties of ternary tungsten-containing MEA V4Ti2W for the first time. V4Ti2W is a type II superconductor with a body-centered cubic (BCC) structure. Experimental results of resistivity, magnetization, and heat capacity indicate that the superconducting transition temperature of the MEA V4Ti2W is roughly 5.0 K. The critical magnetic fields at the upper and lower ends are 9.93(2) T and 40.7(3) mT, respectively. Interestingly, few BCC MEA superconductors with VEC greater than 4.8 have been found. The addition of tungsten leads to a VEC of 4.83 e/a for V4Ti2W, which is rarely higher than the 4.8 value. Adding tungsten element expands the variety of MEA alloys, which may improve the microstructure and mechanical properties of materials and even superconducting properties. This material could potentially offer a new platform for the investigation of innovative MEA and HEA superconductors.

Superconductivity in the bcc-type High-entropy Alloy TiHfNbTaMo

X-ray powder diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetization, and thermodynamic measurements were conducted to investigate the structure and superconducting properties of TiHfNbTaMo, a novel high-entropy alloy possessing a valence electron count (VEC) of 4.8. The TiHfNbTaMo HEA was discovered to have a body-centered cubic structure and a microscopically homogeneous distribution of the constituent elements. This material shows type-II superconductivity with Tc = 3.42 K, lower critical field with 22.8 mT, and upper critical field with 3.95 T. Low-temperature specific heat measurements show that the alloy is a conventional s-wave type with a moderately coupled superconductor. First-principles calculations show that the density of states (DOS) of the TiHfNbTaMo alloy is dominated by hybrid d orbitals of these five metal elements. Additionally, the TiHfNbTaMo HEA exhibits three van Hove singularities. Furthermore, the VEC and the composition of the elements (especially the Nb elemental content) affect the Tc of the bcc-type HEA.

Superconductivity in the medium-entropy alloy TiVNbTa with a body-centered cubic structure

Here we report the TiVNbTa medium-entropy alloy (MEA) superconductor with the mixed 3d - 5d elements synthesized by an arc-melting method. The TiVNbTa material has a body-centered cubic structure. The superconducting properties of TiVNbTa were studied by resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements. The experimental results show that the bulk superconducting phase transition temperature of TiVNbTa is about 4.65 K, and the upper and lower critical fields are 49.3(4) mT and 5.9(5) T, respectively, which indicates TiVNbTa is a type-II superconductor. First-principles calculations show that the d electrons of Ti, V, Nb, and Ta atoms play a significant role near the Fermi level. The results show TiVNbTa is a traditional s-wave superconductor.

Extremely strong coupling s-wave superconductivity in the medium-entropy alloy TiHfNbTa

Here we report a TiHfNbTa bulk medium-entropy alloy (MEA) superconductor crystallized in the body-centered cubic structure, which is synthesized by an arc melting method. Superconducting properties of the TiHfNbTa are studied by employing magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, and specific heat measurements. Experimental results show a bulk superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of around 6.75 K. The lower and upper crit-ical fields for TiHfNbTa are 45.8 mT and 10.46 T, respectively. First-principles calculations show that the d electron of Ti, Hf, Nb, and Ta is the main contribution near the Fermi level. Our results indicate that the superconductivity is a conven-tional s-wave type with extremely strong coupling. The extremely strong coupling behavior in the s-wave type TiHfNbTa MEA superconductor is unusual because it generally happens in cuprates, pnictides, and other unconventional superconductors.
