Symmetries of Borcherds algebras

We give an overview of the construction of Borcherds algebras, particularly the Monstrous Lie algebras $\mathfrak m_g$ constructed by Carnahan, where $g$ is an element of the Monster finite simple group. When $g$ is the identity element, $\mathfrak m_g$ is the Monster Lie algebra of Borcherds. We discuss the appearance of the $\mathfrak m_g$ in compactified models of the Heterotic String. We also summarize recent work on associating Lie group analogs to the Lie algebras $\mathfrak m_g$. We include a discussion of some open problems.

A Magnus group construction for a class of Borcherds algebras

We construct a group associated to a class of Borcherds algebras that admit a direct sum decomposition into a Kac--Moody (or semi-simple) subalgebra and a pair of free Lie subalgebras. Such Borcherds algebras have no mutually orthogonal imaginary simple roots. Our group is a semi-direct product of a Kac--Moody (or semi-simple) group and a Magnus group of invertible formal power series corresponding to a basis of a certain highest weight module determined by the simple imaginary roots. We show that our group is independent of this choice of basis, up to isomorphism. We apply our construction to a number of concrete examples, such as certain Borcherds algebras formed using root lattices of hyperbolic Kac--Moody algebras, the Monster Lie algebra, Monstrous Lie algebras of Fricke type and the gnome Lie algebra.

Kac--Moody Fibonacci sequences

We summarize known results on how to generate an infinite family of integer sequences from the root lattices of rank 2 Kac--Moody algebras. We compute and tabulate the first twenty entries of a number of these sequences. This provides an overarching framework for a large class of Fibonacci-type integer sequences, evaluations of Chebyshev S and U-polynomials and others.

Prosummability in Kac--Moody groups

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a symmetrizable Kac--Moody algebra. We describe {standard graded} $\mathfrak{g}$-modules $V$, which we use to construct a completion $\widehat{V}$ and pro-unipotent group $\widehat{U}$ in $\GL(\widehat{V})$. These standard graded modules include the adjoint module, all integrable modules, Category~$\mathcal{O}$ modules, and opposite Category~$\mathcal{O}$ modules. We prove that the elements of $\widehat{U}$ are pro-summable series, that is, they are projective limits of summable series on quotients $\widehat{V}/\prod_{j=k}^\infty{V}_j$, for each $k>0$. We give an explicit construction of root subalgebras and their completions, corresponding to every root including the imaginary roots. We also construct complete root groups for imaginary roots, whose elements are also pro-summable series acting on $\widehat{V}$. We show that these groups are isomorphic to groups of power series in variables corresponding to basis elements for the imaginary root space.

Advancing mathematics research with generative AI

The main drawback of using generative AI models for advanced mathematics is that these models are not primarily logical reasoning engines. However, Large Language Models, and their refinements, can pick up on patterns in higher mathematics that are difficult for humans to see. By putting the design of generative AI models to their advantage, mathematicians may use them as powerful interactive assistants that can carry out laborious tasks, generate and debug code, check examples, formulate conjectures and more. We discuss how generative AI models can be used to advance mathematics research. We also discuss their integration with neuro-symbolic solvers, Computer Algebra Systems and formal proof assistants such as Lean.

Chevalley groups over $\Z$: A representation-theoretic approach

Let $G(\mathbb{Q})$ be a simply connected Chevalley group over $\mathbb{Q}$ corresponding to a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ over $\mathbb{C}$. Let $V$ be a finite dimensional faithful highest weight $\mathfrak g$-module and let $V_\mathbb{Z}$ be a Chevalley $\mathbb{Z}$-form of $V$. Let $\Gamma(\mathbb{Z})$ be the subgroup of $G(\mathbb{Q})$ that preserves $V_{\mathbb{Z}}$ and let $G(\mathbb{Z})$ be the group of $\mathbb{Z}$-points of $G(\mathbb{Q})$. Then $G(\mathbb{Q})$ is \emph{integral} if $G(\mathbb{Z})=\Gamma(\mathbb{Z})$. Chevalley's original work constructs a scheme-theoretic integral form of $G(\mathbb{Q})$ which equals $\Gamma(\mathbb{Z})$. Here we give a representation-theoretic proof of integrality of $G(\mathbb{Q})$ using only the action of $G(\mathbb{Q})$ on $V$, rather than the language of group schemes. We discuss the challenges and open problems that arise in trying to extend this to a proof of integrality for Kac-Moody groups over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Growth of root multiplicities along imaginary root strings in Kac--Moody algebras

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a symmetrizable Kac--Moody algebra. Given a root $\alpha$ and a real root $\beta$ of $\mathfrak{g}$, it is known that the $\beta$-string through $\alpha$, denoted $R_\alpha(\beta)$, is finite. Given an imaginary root $\beta$, we show that $R_\alpha(\beta)=\{\beta\}$ or $R_\alpha(\beta)$ is infinite. If $(\beta,\beta)<0$, we also show that the multiplicity of the root ${\alpha+n\beta}$ grows at least exponentially as $n\to\infty$. If $(\beta,\beta)=(\alpha, \beta) = 0$, we show that $R_\alpha(\beta)$ is bi-infinite and the multiplicities of $\alpha+n\beta$ are bounded. If $(\beta,\beta)=0$ and $(\alpha, \beta) \neq 0$, we show that $R_\alpha(\beta)$ is semi-infinite and the muliplicity of $\alpha+n\beta$ or $\alpha-n\beta$ grows faster than every polynomial as $n\to\infty$. We also prove that $\dim \mathfrak{g}_{\alpha+\beta} \geq \dim \mathfrak{g}_\alpha + \dim \mathfrak{g}_\beta -1$ whenever $\alpha \neq \beta$ with $(\alpha, \beta)<0$.

A Lie group analog for the Monster Lie algebra

The Monster Lie algebra $\frak m $, which admits an action of the Monster finite simple group $\mathbb{M}$, was introduced by Borcherds as part of his work on the Conway--Norton Monstrous Moonshine conjecture. Here we construct an analog~$G(\frak m)$ of a Lie group or Kac--Moody group, associated to~$\frak m$. The group~$G(\frak m)$ is given by generators and relations, analogous to a construction of a Kac--Moody group given by Tits. In the absence of local nilpotence of the adjoint representation of $\frak m$, we introduce the notion of pro-summability of an infinite sum of operators. We use this to construct a complete pro-unipotent group $\Uhp$ of automorphisms of a completion $\widehat{\mathfrak{m}}=\frak n^-\ \oplus\ \frak h\ \oplus\ \widehat{\frak n}^+$ of~$\mathfrak{m}$, where $\widehat{\frak n}^+$ is the formal product of the positive root spaces of $\frak m$. The elements of $\widehat{U}^+$ are pro-summable infinite series with constant term 1. The group $\widehat{U}^+$ has a subgroup~$\widehat{U}^+_\text{im}$, which is an analog of a complete unipotent group corresponding to the positive imaginary roots of~$\frak m$.We construct analogs $\text{Exp}: \widehat{\mathfrak{n}}^+\to\widehat{U}^+$ and $\text{Ad} :\widehat{U}^+ \to \Aut(\widehat{\frak{n}}^+)$ of the classical exponential map and adjoint representation. We show that the action of $\mathbb{M}$ on $\mathfrak m$ induces an action of~$\mathbb{M}$ on~$\widehat{\frak m}$, and that this in turn induces an action of $\mathbb{M}$ on~$\widehat{U}^+$. We also show that the action of $\mathbb{M}$ on $\widehat{\mathfrak n}^+$ is compatible with the action of $\widehat{U}^+$ on $\widehat{\mathfrak n}^+$.

Vertex operators for imaginary $\mathfrak{gl}_2$ subalgebras in the Monster Lie Algebra

The Monster Lie algebra $\mathfrak m$ is a quotient of the physical space of the vertex algebra $V=V^\natural\otimes V_{1,1}$, where $V^\natural$ is the Moonshine module vertex operator algebra of Frenkel, Lepowsky, and Meurman, and $V_{1,1}$ is the vertex algebra corresponding to the rank 2 even unimodular lattice $\textrm{II}_{1,1}$. We construct vertex algebra elements that project to bases for subalgebras of $\mathfrak m$ isomorphic to $\mathfrak{gl}_{2}$, corresponding to each imaginary simple root, denoted $(1,j)$ for $j>0$. Our method requires the existence of pairs of primary vectors in $V^{\natural}$ satisfying some natural conditions, which we prove. We show that the action of the Monster finite simple group $\mathbb{M}$ on the subspace of primary vectors in $V^\natural$ induces an $\mathbb{M}$-action on the set of $\mathfrak{gl}_2$ subalgebras corresponding to a fixed imaginary simple root. We use the generating function for dimensions of subspaces of primary vectors of $V^\natural$ to prove that this action is non-trivial for small values of $j$.

Strong integrality of inversion subgroups of Kac-Moody groups

Let $A$ be a symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrix with corresponding Kac--Moody algebra $\frak{g}$ over ${\mathbb Q}$. Let $V=V^{\lambda}$ be an integrable highest weight $\frak{g}$-module and let $V_{\mathbb Z}=V^{\lambda}_{\mathbb Z}$ be a ${\mathbb Z}Z$-form of $V$. Let $G$ be an associated minimal representation-theoretic Kac--Moody group and let $G({\mathbb Z})$ be its integral subgroup. Let $\Gamma({\mathbb Z})$ be the Chevalley subgroup of $G$, that is, the subgroup that stabilizes the lattice $V_{{\mathbb Z}}$ in $V$. For a subgroup $M$ of $G$, we say that $M$ is integral if $M\cap G({\mathbb Z})=M\cap \Gamma({\mathbb Z})$ and that $M$ is strongly integral if there exists $v\in V^{\lambda}_{\mathbb Z}$ such that, for all $g\in M$, $g\cdot v\in V_{\mathbb{Z}}$ implies $g\in G({\mathbb{Z}})$. We prove strong integrality of inversion subgroups $U_{(w)}$ of $G$ where, for $w\in W$, $U_{(w)}$ is the the group generated by positive real root groups that are flipped to negative roots by $w^{-1}$. We use this to prove strong integrality of subgroups of the unipotent subgroup $U$ of $G$ generated by commuting real root groups. When $A$ has rank 2, this gives strong integrality of subgroups $U_1$ and $U_2$ where $U=U_{1}{\Large{*}}\ U_{2}$ and each $U_{i}$ is generated by `half' the positive real roots.

Imaginary reflections and discrete symmetries in the heterotic Monster

Let $\mathbb{M}$ be the Monster finite simple group. We give an interpretation of certain discrete symmetries of a family of heterotic string compactifications to $1 + 1$ dimensions in terms of discrete symmetries of the Monster Lie algebra $\frak m$, and more generally Carnahan's family of Monstrous Lie algebras $\frak m_g$, for $g\in\mathbb{M}$ of Fricke type. We relate a Weyl group-type reflection $w_{\im}$, with respect to an imaginary simple root, to a composition of T-duality, time reversal, and parity reversal transformations in the compactified heterotic string. The transformation $w_{\im}$ also has a natural permutation action on the BPS states of the compactified heterotic string.

Eisenstein series on arithmetic quotients of rank 2 Kac--Moody groups over finite fields

Let $G$ be an affine or hyperbolic rank 2 Kac--Moody group over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$. Let $X=X_{q+1}$ be the Tits building of $G$, the $(q+1)$--homogeneous tree, and let $\Gamma$ be a non-uniform lattice in $G$. When $\Gamma$ is a standard parabolic subgroup for the negative $BN$--pair, we define Eisenstein series on $\Gamma \backslash X$ and prove its convergence in a half space using Iwasawa decomposition of the Haar measure on $G$. A crucial tool is a description of the vertices of $X$ in terms of Iwasawa cells. We also prove meromorphic continuation of the Eisenstein series. This requires us to construct an integral operator on the Tits building $X$ and a truncation operator for the Eisenstein series. We also develop the functional analytic framework necessary for proving meromorphic continuation in our setting, by refining and extending Bernstein's Continuation Principle.

Entirety of certain cuspidal Eisenstein series on Kac--Moody groups

Let $G$ be an infinite-dimensional representation-theoretic Kac--Moody group associated to a nonsingular symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrix. We consider Eisenstein series on $G$ induced from unramified cusp forms on finite-dimensional Levi subgroups of maximal parabolic subgroups. Under a natural condition on maximal parabolic subgroups, we prove that the cuspidal Eisenstein series are entire on the full complex plane.

On the convergence of Kac-Moody Eisenstein series

Let $G$ be a representation-theoretic Kac--Moody group associated to a nonsingular symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrix. We first consider Kac-Moody analogs of Borel Eisenstein series (induced from quasicharacters on the Borel), and prove they converge almost everywhere inside the Tits cone for arbitrary spectral parameters in the Godement range. We then use this result to show the full absolute convergence everywhere inside the Tits cone (again for spectral parameters in the Godement range) for a class of Kac-Moody groups satisfying a certain combinatorial property, in particular for rank-2 hyperbolic groups.

${\boldsymbol\pi}$-systems of symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras

As part of his classification of regular semisimple subalgebras of semisimple Lie algebras, Dynkin introduced the notion of a $\pi$-system. This is a subset of the roots such that pairwise differences of its elements are not roots. These arise as simple systems of regular semisimple subalgebras. Morita and Naito generalized this notion to all symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras. In this work, we systematically develop the theory of $\pi$-systems of symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras and establish their fundamental properties. We study the orbits of the Weyl group on $\pi$-systems, and completely determine the number of orbits in many cases of interest in physics. In particular, we show that there is a unique $\pi$-system of type $HA_1^{(1)}$ (the Feingold-Frenkel algebra) in $E_{10}$ (the rank 10 hyperbolic algebra) up to Weyl group action and negation.

Generators and relations for (generalised) Cartan type superalgebras

In Kac's classification of finite-dimensional Lie superalgebras, the contragredient ones can be constructed from Dynkin diagrams similar to those of the simple finite-dimensional Lie algebras, but with additional types of nodes. For example, $A(n-1,0) = \mathfrak{sl}(1|n)$ can be constructed by adding a "gray" node to the Dynkin diagram of $A_{n-1} = \mathfrak{sl}(n)$, corresponding to an odd null root. The Cartan superalgebras constitute a different class, where the simplest example is $W(n)$, the derivation algebra of the Grassmann algebra on $n$ generators. Here we present a novel construction of $W(n)$, from the same Dynkin diagram as $A(n-1,0)$, but with additional generators and relations.
