Non-uniformly elliptic variational problems on BV

We establish $\mathrm{W}^{1,1}$-regularity and higher gradient integrability for relaxed minimizers of convex integral functionals on $\mathrm{BV}$. Unlike classical examples such as the minimal surface integrand, we only require linear growth from below but not necessarily from above. This typically comes with a non-uniformly degenerate elliptic behaviour, for which our results extend the presently available bounds from the superlinear growth case in a sharp way.

Gradient integrability for bounded $\mathrm{BD}$-minimizers

We establish that locally bounded relaxed minimizers of degenerate elliptic symmetric gradient functionals on $\mathrm{BD}(\Omega)$ have weak gradients in $\mathrm{L}_{\mathrm{loc}}^{1}(\Omega;\mathbb{R}^{n\times n})$. This is achieved for the sharp ellipticity range that is presently known to yield $\mathrm{W}_{\mathrm{loc}}^{1,1}$-regularity in the full gradient case on $\mathrm{BV}(\Omega;\mathbb{R}^{n})$. As a consequence, we also obtain the first Sobolev regularity results for minimizers of the area-type functional on $\mathrm{BD}(\Omega)$.

Optimal regularity of isoperimetric sets with H\"older densities

We establish a regularity result for optimal sets of the isoperimetric problem with double density under mild ($\alpha$-)H\"older regularity assumptions on the density functions. Our main Theorem improves some previous results and allows to reach in any dimension the regularity class $C^{1,\frac{\alpha}{2-\alpha}}$. This class is indeed the optimal one for local minimizers of variational functionals with an integrand that depends $\alpha$-H\"older continuous on the minimizer itself, and as such can (the boundary of) the isoperimetric set be locally written (with additional constraint).

Exponential convergence to equilibrium for coupled systems of nonlinear degenerate drift diffusion equations

We study the existence and long-time asymptotics of weak solutions to a system of two nonlinear drift-diffusion equations that has a gradient flow structure in the Wasserstein distance. The two equations are coupled through a cross-diffusion term that is scaled by a parameter $\varepsilon\ge0$. The nonlinearities and potentials are chosen such that in the decoupled system for $\varepsilon=0$, the evolution is metrically contractive, with a global rate $\Lambda>0$. The coupling is a singular perturbation in the sense that for any $\varepsilon>0$, contractivity of the system is lost. Our main result is that for all sufficiently small $\varepsilon>0$, the global attraction to a unique steady state persists, with an exponential rate $\Lambda_\varepsilon=\Lambda-K\varepsilon$. The proof combines results from the theory of metric gradient flows with further variational methods and functional inequalities.

Eigendamage: an Eigendeformation model for the variational approximation of cohesive fracture -- a one-dimensional case study

We study an approximation scheme for a variational theory of cohesive fracture in a one-dimensional setting. Here, the energy functional is approximated by a family of functionals depending on a small parameter $0 < \varepsilon \ll 1$ and on two fields: the elastic part of the displacement field and an eigendeformation field that describes the inelastic response of the material beyond the elastic regime. We measure the inelastic contributions of the latter in terms of a non-local energy functional. Our main result shows that, as $\varepsilon \to 0$, the approximate functionals $\Gamma$-converge to a cohesive zone model.

A note on the weak* and pointwise convergence of BV functions

We study pointwise convergence properties of weakly* converging sequences $\{u_i\}_{i \in {\mathbb N}}$ in $\mathrm{BV}({\mathbb R}^n)$. We show that, after passage to a suitable subsequence (not relabeled), we have pointwise convergence $u_i^*(x)\to u^*(x)$ of the precise representatives for all $x\in {\mathbb R}^n \setminus E$, where the exceptional set $E \subset {\mathbb R}^n$ has on the one hand Hausdorff dimension at most $n-1$, and is on the other hand also negligible with respect to the Cantor part of $|D u|$. Furthermore, we discuss the optimality of these results.

Optimal Lipschitz criteria and local estimates for non-uniformly elliptic problems

We report on new techniques and results in the regularity theory of general non-uniformly elliptic variational integrals. By means of a new potential theoretic approach we reproduce, in the non-uniformly elliptic setting, the optimal criteria for Lipschitz continuity known in the uniformly elliptic one and provide a unified approach between non-uniformly and uniformly elliptic problems.

On a Neumann problem for variational functionals of linear growth

We consider a Neumann problem for strictly convex variational functionals of linear growth. We establish the existence of minimisers among $\operatorname{W}^{1,1}$-functions provided that the domain under consideration is simply connected. Hence, in this situation, the relaxation of the functional to the space of functions of bounded variation, which has better compactness properties, is not necessary. Similar $\operatorname{W}^{1,1}$-regularity results for the corresponding Dirichlet problem are only known under rather restrictive convexity assumptions limiting its non-uniformity up to the borderline case of the minimal surface functional, whereas for the Neumann problem no such quantified version of strong convexity is required.

Globally Lipschitz minimizers for variational problems with linear growth

We study the minimization of convex, variational integrals of linear growth among all functions in the Sobolev space $W^{1,1}$ with prescribed boundary values (or its equivalent formulation as a boundary value problem for a degenerately elliptic Euler--Lagrange equation). Due to insufficient compactness properties of these Dirichlet classes, the existence of solutions does not follow in a standard way by the direct method in the calculus of variations and in fact might fail, as it is well-known already for the non-parametric minimal surface problem. Assuming radial structure, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition on the integrand such that the Dirichlet problem is in general solvable, in the sense that a Lipschitz solution exists for any regular domain and all prescribed regular boundary values, via the construction of appropriate barrier functions in the tradition of Serrin's paper [19].

On the existence of integrable solutions to nonlinear elliptic systems and variational problems with linear growth

We investigate the properties of certain elliptic systems leading, a~priori, to solutions that belong to the space of Radon measures. We show that if the problem is equipped with a so-called asymptotic Uhlenbeck structure, then the solution can in fact be understood as a standard weak solution, with one proviso: analogously as in the case of minimal surface equations, the attainment of the boundary value is penalized by a measure supported on (a subset of) the boundary, which, for the class of problems under consideration here, is the part of the boundary where a Neumann boundary condition is imposed.

Stochastic ODEs and stochastic linear PDEs with critical drift: regularity, duality and uniqueness

In this paper linear stochastic transport and continuity equations with drift in critical $L^{p}$ spaces are considered. In this situation noise prevents shocks for the transport equation and singularities in the density for the continuity equation, starting from smooth initial conditions. Specifically, we first prove a result of Sobolev regularity of solutions, which is false for the corresponding deterministic equation. The technique needed to reach the critical case is new and based on parabolic equations satisfied by moments of first derivatives of the solution, opposite to previous works based on stochastic flows. The approach extends to higher order derivatives under more regularity of the drift term. By a duality approach, these regularity results are then applied to prove uniqueness of weak solutions to linear stochastic continuity and transport equations and certain well-posedness results for the associated stochastic differential equation (sDE) (roughly speaking, existence and uniqueness of flows and their $C^\alpha$ regularity, strong uniqueness for the sDE when the initial datum has diffuse law). Finally, we show two types of examples: on the one hand, we present well-posed sDEs, when the corresponding ODEs are ill-posed, and on the other hand, we give a counterexample in the supercritical case.

Random perturbations of nonlinear parabolic systems

Several aspects of regularity theory for parabolic systems are investigated under the effect of random perturbations. The deterministic theory, when strict parabolicity is assumed, presents both classes of systems where all weak solutions are in fact more regular, and examples of systems with weak solutions which develop singularities in finite time. Our main result is the extension of a regularity result due to Kalita to the stochastic case. Concerning the examples with singular solutions (outside the setting of Kalita's regularity result), we do not know whether stochastic noise may prevent the emergence of singularities, as it happens for easier PDEs. We can only prove that, for a linear stochastic parabolic system with coefficients outside the previous regularity theory, the expected value of the solution is not singular.

Boundary regularity for elliptic systems under a natural growth condition

We consider weak solutions $u \in u_0 + W^{1,2}_0(\Omega,R^N) \cap L^{\infty}(\Omega,R^N)$ of second order nonlinear elliptic systems of the type $- div a (\cdot, u, Du) = b(\cdot,u,Du)$ in $\Omega$ with an inhomogeneity satisfying a natural growth condition. In dimensions $n \in \{2,3,4\}$ we show that $\mathcal{H}^{n-1}$-almost every boundary point is a regular point for $Du$, provided that the boundary data and the coefficients are sufficiently smooth.

Regularity versus singularities for elliptic problems in two dimensions

In two dimensions every weak solution to a nonlinear elliptic system $\rm{div} a(x,u,Du)=0$ has H\"older continuous first derivatives provided that standard continuity, ellipticity and growth assumptions hold with a growth exponent $p \geq 2$. We give an example showing that this result cannot be extended to the subquadratic case, i.e. that weak solutions are not necessarily continuous if $1< p <2$. Furthermore, we discuss related results for variational integrals.
