Maximal Sobolev regularity of the stress tensor for the symmetric gradient p-Laplace system

The symmetric $p$-Laplace operator enters various models in mathematical physics, such as incompressible materials with power-type hardening and non-Newtonian fluids. In this work, second-order differentiability properties of solutions to the symmetric $p$-Laplace system are established. They are formulated as maximal Sobolev regularity of the nonlinear stress tensor for locally square integrable right-hand sides.

Examples of $p$-harmonic maps

We construct explicit examples of $p$-harmonic maps $u:\mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^N$. These are more irregular than the previously known examples and thus provide new upper bounds for the regularity of $p$-harmonic maps, including the case of $\infty$-harmonic maps. To optimize our approach, we utilize solutions of the Hurwitz problem from algebra.

Nonlocal equations with degenerate weights

We introduce fractional weighted Sobolev spaces with degenerate weights. For these spaces we provide embeddings and Poincar\'e inequalities. When the order of fractional differentiability goes to $0$ or $1$, we recover the weighted Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces with Muckenhoupt weights, respectively. Moreover, we prove interior H\"older continuity and Harnack inequalities for solutions to the corresponding weighted nonlocal integro-differential equations. This naturally extends a classical result by Fabes, Kenig, and Serapioni to the nonlinear, nonlocal setting.

The De Giorgi method for local and nonlocal systems

We extend the De Giorgi iteration technique to the vectorial setting. For this we replace the usual scalar truncation operator by a vectorial shortening operator. As an application, we prove local boundedness for local and nonlocal nonlinear systems. Furthermore, we show convex hull properties, which are a generalization of the maximum principle to the case of systems.

Global regularity for nonlinear systems with symmetric gradients

We study global regularity of nonlinear systems of partial differential equations depending on the symmetric part of the gradient with Dirichlet boundary conditions. These systems arise from variational problems in plasticity with power growth. We cover the full range of exponents $p \in (1,\infty)$. As a novelty the degenerate case for $p>2$ is included. We present a unified approach for all exponents by showing the regularity for general systems of Orlicz growth.

On symmetric div-quasiconvex hulls and divsym-free $\mathrm{L}^\infty$-truncations

We establish that for any non-empty, compact set $K\subset\mathbb{R}_{\mathrm{sym}}^{3\times 3}$ the $1$- and $\infty$-symmetric div-quasiconvex hulls $K^{(1)}$ and $K^{(\infty)}$ coincide. This settles a conjecture in a recent work of Conti, M\"{u}ller and Ortiz (Symmetric Div-Quasiconvexity and the Relaxation of Static Problems. Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 235(2):841-880) in the affirmative. As a key novelty, we construct an $\mathrm{L}^{\infty}$-truncation that preserves both symmetry and solenoidality of matrix-valued maps in $\mathrm{L}^{1}$.
