Fast and Practical Strassen's Matrix Multiplication using FPGAs

Matrix multiplication is a cornerstone operation in a wide array of scientific fields, including machine learning and computer graphics. The standard algorithm for matrix multiplication has a complexity of $\mathcal{O}(n^3)$ for $n\times n$ matrices. Strassen's algorithm improves this to $\mathcal{O}(n^{2.807})$, but its practicality is limited for small to medium matrix sizes due to the large number of additions it introduces. This paper presents a novel FPGA-based implementation of Strassen's algorithm that achieves superior speed over an optimized General Matrix Multiply (GeMM) implementation for matrices as small as $n=256$. Our design, tested extensively on two high-performance FPGA accelerators (Alveo U50 and U280) across various data types, matches or surpasses the performance of a highly optimized baseline across a range of matrix sizes.

MultiResFormer: Transformer with Adaptive Multi-Resolution Modeling for General Time Series Forecasting

Transformer-based models have greatly pushed the boundaries of time series forecasting recently. Existing methods typically encode time series data into $\textit{patches}$ using one or a fixed set of patch lengths. This, however, could result in a lack of ability to capture the variety of intricate temporal dependencies present in real-world multi-periodic time series. In this paper, we propose MultiResFormer, which dynamically models temporal variations by adaptively choosing optimal patch lengths. Concretely, at the beginning of each layer, time series data is encoded into several parallel branches, each using a detected periodicity, before going through the transformer encoder block. We conduct extensive evaluations on long- and short-term forecasting datasets comparing MultiResFormer with state-of-the-art baselines. MultiResFormer outperforms patch-based Transformer baselines on long-term forecasting tasks and also consistently outperforms CNN baselines by a large margin, while using much fewer parameters than these baselines.

FADO: Floorplan-Aware Directive Optimization for High-Level Synthesis Designs on Multi-Die FPGAs

Multi-die FPGAs are widely adopted to deploy large hardware accelerators. Two factors impede the performance optimization of HLS designs implemented on multi-die FPGAs. On the one hand, the long net delay due to nets crossing die-boundaries results in an NP-hard problem to properly floorplan and pipeline an application. On the other hand, traditional automated searching flow for HLS directive optimizations targets single-die FPGAs, and hence, it cannot consider the resource constraints on each die and the timing issue incurred by the die-crossings. Further, it leads to an excessively long runtime to legalize the floorplan of HLS designs generated under each group of configurations during directive optimization due to the large design scale. To co-optimize the directives and floorplan of HLS designs on multi-die FPGAs, we propose the FADO framework, which formulates the directive-floorplan co-search problem based on the multi-choice multi-dimensional bin-packing and solves it using an iterative optimization flow. For each step of directive search, a latency-bottleneck-guided greedy algorithm searches for more efficient directive configurations. For floorplanning, instead of repetitively incurring global floorplanning algorithms, we implement a more efficient incremental floorplan legalization algorithm. It mainly applies the worst-fit online bin-packing algorithm to balance the floorplan, together with an offline best-fit-decreasing re-packing to compact the floorplan, followed by pipelining of long wires crossing die-boundaries. Through experiments on HLS designs mixing dataflow and non-dataflow kernels, FADO not only well-automates the co-optimization and finishes within 693X~4925X shorter runtime, compared with DSE assisted by global floorplanning, but also yields an improvement of 1.16X~8.78X in overall workflow execution time after implementation on the Xilinx Alveo U250 FPGA.

Modeling relation paths for knowledge base completion via joint adversarial training

Knowledge Base Completion (KBC), which aims at determining the missing relations between entity pairs, has received increasing attention in recent years. Most existing KBC methods focus on either embedding the Knowledge Base (KB) into a specific semantic space or leveraging the joint probability of Random Walks (RWs) on multi-hop paths. Only a few unified models take both semantic and path-related features into consideration with adequacy. In this paper, we propose a novel method to explore the intrinsic relationship between the single relation (i.e. 1-hop path) and multi-hop paths between paired entities. We use Hierarchical Attention Networks (HANs) to select important relations in multi-hop paths and encode them into low-dimensional vectors. By treating relations and multi-hop paths as two different input sources, we use a feature extractor, which is shared by two downstream components (i.e. relation classifier and source discriminator), to capture shared/similar information between them. By joint adversarial training, we encourage our model to extract features from the multi-hop paths which are representative for relation completion. We apply the trained model (except for the source discriminator) to several large-scale KBs for relation completion. Experimental results show that our method outperforms existing path information-based approaches. Since each sub-module of our model can be well interpreted, our model can be applied to a large number of relation learning tasks.

Mobile APP User Attribute Prediction by Heterogeneous Information Network Modeling

User-based attribute information, such as age and gender, is usually considered as user privacy information. It is difficult for enterprises to obtain user-based privacy attribute information. However, user-based privacy attribute information has a wide range of applications in personalized services, user behavior analysis and other aspects. this paper advances the HetPathMine model and puts forward TPathMine model. With applying the number of clicks of attributes under each node to express the user's emotional preference information, optimizations of the solution of meta-path weight are also presented. Based on meta-path in heterogeneous information networks, the new model integrates all relationships among objects into isomorphic relationships of classified objects. Matrix is used to realize the knowledge dissemination of category knowledge among isomorphic objects. The experimental results show that: (1) the prediction of user attributes based on heterogeneous information networks can achieve higher accuracy than traditional machine learning classification methods; (2) TPathMine model based on the number of clicks is more accurate in classifying users of different age groups, and the weight of each meta-path is consistent with human intuition or the real world situation.
