Resonant synchronization and information retrieve from memorized Kuramoto network

A new collective behavior of resonant synchronization is discovered and the ability to retrieve information from brain memory is proposed based on this mechanism. We use modified Kuramoto phase oscillator to simulate the dynamics of a single neuron in self-oscillation state, and investigate the collective responses of a neural network, which is composed of $N$ globally coupled Kuramoto oscillators, to the external stimulus signals in a critical state just below the synchronization threshold of Kuramoto model. The input signals at different driving frequencies, which are used to denote different neural stimuli, can drive the coupled oscillators into different synchronized groups locked to the same effective frequencies and recover different synchronized patterns emerged from their collective dynamics closely related to the predetermined frequency distributions of the oscillators (memory). This model is used to explain how brain stores and retrieves information by the synchronized patterns emerging in the neural network stimulated by the external inputs.

Deep Smoke Segmentation

Inspired by the recent success of fully convolutional networks (FCN) in semantic segmentation, we propose a deep smoke segmentation network to infer high quality segmentation masks from blurry smoke images. To overcome large variations in texture, color and shape of smoke appearance, we divide the proposed network into a coarse path and a fine path. The first path is an encoder-decoder FCN with skip structures, which extracts global context information of smoke and accordingly generates a coarse segmentation mask. To retain fine spatial details of smoke, the second path is also designed as an encoder-decoder FCN with skip structures, but it is shallower than the first path network. Finally, we propose a very small network containing only add, convolution and activation layers to fuse the results of the two paths. Thus, we can easily train the proposed network end to end for simultaneous optimization of network parameters. To avoid the difficulty in manually labelling fuzzy smoke objects, we propose a method to generate synthetic smoke images. According to results of our deep segmentation method, we can easily and accurately perform smoke detection from videos. Experiments on three synthetic smoke datasets and a realistic smoke dataset show that our method achieves much better performance than state-of-the-art segmentation algorithms based on FCNs. Test results of our method on videos are also appealing.

Dynamical classification of topological quantum phases

Topological phase of matter is now a mainstream of research in condensed matter physics, of which the classification, synthesis, and detection of topological states have brought excitements over the recent decade while remain incomplete with ongoing challenges in both theory and experiment. Here we propose to establish a universal dynamical characterization of the topological quantum phases classified by integers, and further propose the high-precision dynamical schemes to detect such states. The framework of {the dynamical classification theory} consists of basic theorems. First, we uncover that classifying a $d$-dimensional ($d$D) gapped topological phase {of generic multibands} can reduce to a ($d-1$)D invariant defined on so-called band inversion surfaces (BISs), rendering a {\it bulk-surface duality} which simplifies the topological characterization. Further, we show in quenching across phase boundary the (pseudo)spin dynamics to exhibit unique topological patterns on BISs, which are attributed to the post-quench bulk topology and manifest a {\it dynamical bulk-surface correspondence}. For this the topological phase is classified by a dynamical topological invariant measured from dynamical spin-texture field on the BISs. Applications to quenching experiments on feasible models are proposed and studied, demonstrating the new experimental strategies to detect topological phases with high feasibility. This work opens a broad new direction to classify and detect topological phases by quantum dynamics.

Dynamical detection of topological charges

We propose a generic scheme to characterize topological phases via detecting topological charges by quench dynamics. A topological charge is defined as the chirality of a monopole at Dirac or Weyl point of spin-orbit field, and topological phases can be classified by total charges in the region enclosed by the so-called band-inversion surfaces (BISs). We show that both the topological monopoles and BISs can be identified by non-equilibrium spin dynamics caused by a sequence of quenches. From an emergent dynamical field given by time-averaged spin textures, the topological charges, as well as the topological invariant, can be readily obtained. An explicit advantage in this scheme is that only a single spin component needs to be measured to detect all the information of the topological phase. We numerically examine two realistic models, and propose a feasible experimental setup for the measurement. This work opens a new way to dynamically classify topological phases.

Volume of the set of locally diagonalizable bipartite states

The purpose of this article is to investigate the geometry of the set of locally diagonalizable bipartite quantum states. We have the following new results: the Hilbert-Schmidt volume of all locally diagonalizable states, and a necessary and sufficient condition for local diagonalizability in the qubit-qubit case. Besides, we partition the set of all locally diagonalizable states as local unitary orbits (or coadjoint orbits) of diagonal forms. It is well-known that the Riemannian volume of a coadjoint orbit for a regular point in a specified Weyl chamber can be calculated by Harish-Chandra's volume formula. By modifying Harish-Chandra's volume formula, we give, for the first time, a specific formula for the Riemannian volume of a local unitary orbit of a regular point in a specified Weyl chamber. Several open questions are presented as well.

Dense People Counting Using IR-UWB Radar with a Hybrid Feature Extraction Method

People counting is one of the hottest issues in sensing applications. The impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar has been extensively applied to count people, providing a device-free solution without illumination and privacy concerns. However, performance of current solutions is limited in congested environments due to the superposition and obstruction of signals. In this letter, a hybrid feature extraction method based on curvelet transform and distance bin is proposed. 2-D radar matrix features are extracted in multiple scales and multiple angles by applying the curvelet transform. Furthermore, the distance bin is introduced by dividing each row of the matrix into several bins along the propagating distance to select features. The radar signal dataset in three dense scenarios is constructed, including people randomly walking in the constrained area with densities of 3 and 4 persons per square meter, and queueing with an average distance of 10 centimeters. The number of people is up to 20 in the dataset. Four classifiers including decision tree, AdaBoost, random forest and neural network are compared to validate the hybrid features, and random forest performs the highest accuracies of all above 97% in three dense scenarios. Moreover, to ensure the reliability of the hybrid features, three other features including cluster features, activity features and CNN features are compared. The experimental results reveal that the proposed hybrid feature extraction method exhibits stable performance with significantly superior effectiveness.

Chiral Phase Transition with 2+1 quark flavors in an improved soft-wall AdS/QCD Model

We study the chiral phase transition with 2 + 1 quark flavors in an improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model, which can produce the light meson spectrum and many other low-energy quantities consistent with experiments in the two-flavor case. The chiral transition behaviors of the quark condensates at different quark masses are analysed in detail, and the (m_{u,d}, m_s) phase diagram for the quark sector has been obtained from the improved soft-wall model. We find that the features of the calculated phase diagram are completely consistent with the standard scenario, which is supported by lattice simulations and theoretical arguments. The evidence of a tricritical point on the m_{u,d} = 0 boundary of the (m_{u,d}, m_s) phase diagram is first clearly presented in the bottom-up AdS/QCD.

Coherence generating power of unitary transformations via probabilistic average

We study the ability of a quantum channel to generate quantum coherence when it applies to incoherent states. Based on probabilistic averages, we define a measure of such coherence generating power (CGP) for a generic quantum channel, based on the average coherence generated by the quantum channel acting on a uniform ensemble of incoherent states. Explicit analytical formula of the CGP for any unitary channels are presented in terms of subentropy. An upper bound for CGP of unital quantum channels has been also derived. Detailed examples are investigated.

Average of uncertainty-product for bounded observables

The goal of this paper is to calculate exactly the average of uncertainty-product of two bounded observables and to establish its typicality over the whole set of finite dimensional quantum pure states. Here we use the uniform ensembles of pure and isospectral states as well as the states distributed uniformly according to the measure induced by the Hilbert-Schmidt norm. Firstly, we investigate the average uncertainty of an observable over isospectral density matrices. By letting the isospectral density matrices be of rank-one, we get the average uncertainty of an observable restricted to pure quantum states. These results can help us check how large the gap is between the uncertainty-product and any obtained lower bounds about the uncertainty-product. Although our method in the present paper cannot give a tighter lower bound of uncertainty-product for bounded observables, it can help us drop any one that is not tighter than the known one substantially.

Temporal Interpolation via Motion Field Prediction

Navigated 2D multi-slice dynamic Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging enables high contrast 4D MR imaging during free breathing and provides in-vivo observations for treatment planning and guidance. Navigator slices are vital for retrospective stacking of 2D data slices in this method. However, they also prolong the acquisition sessions. Temporal interpolation of navigator slices an be used to reduce the number of navigator acquisitions without degrading specificity in stacking. In this work, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) based method for temporal interpolation via motion field prediction. The proposed formulation incorporates the prior knowledge that a motion field underlies changes in the image intensities over time. Previous approaches that interpolate directly in the intensity space are prone to produce blurry images or even remove structures in the images. Our method avoids such problems and faithfully preserves the information in the image. Further, an important advantage of our formulation is that it provides an unsupervised estimation of bi-directional motion fields. We show that these motion fields can be used to halve the number of registrations required during 4D reconstruction, thus substantially reducing the reconstruction time.

Robotic Sewing and Knot Tying for Personalized Stent Graft Manufacturing

This paper presents a versatile robotic system for sewing 3D structured object. Leveraging on using a customized robotic sewing device and closed-loop visual servoing control, an all-in-one solution for sewing personalized stent graft is demonstrated. Stitch size planning and automatic knot tying are proposed as the two key functions of the system. By using effective stitch size planning, sub-millimetre sewing accuracy is achieved for stitch sizes ranging from 2mm to 5mm. In addition, a thread manipulator for thread management and tension control is also proposed to perform successive knot tying to secure each stitch. Detailed laboratory experiments have been performed to access the proposed instruments and allied algorithms. The proposed framework can be generalised to a wide range of applications including 3D industrial sewing, as well as transferred to other clinical areas such as surgical suturing.

Spectral density of mixtures of random density matrices for qubits

We derive the spectral density of the equiprobable mixture of two random density matrices of a two-level quantum system. We also work out the spectral density of mixture under the so-called quantum addition rule. We use the spectral densities to calculate the average entropy of mixtures of random density matrices, and show that the average entropy of the arithmetic-mean-state of $n$ qubit density matrices randomly chosen from the Hilbert-Schmidt ensemble is never decreasing with the number $n$. We also get the exact value of the average squared fidelity. Some conjectures and open problems related to von Neumann entropy are also proposed.

Asymptotics for Null-timelike Boundary Problems for General Linear Wave Equations

We study the linear wave equation $\Box_{g}u=0$ in Bondi-Sachs coordinates, for an asymptotically flat Lorentz metric $g$. We consider the null-timelike boundary problem, where an initial value is given on the null surface $τ=0$ and a boundary value on the timelike surface $r=r_{0}$. We obtain spacetime $H^{p}$-estimates of $ru$ for $r>r_0$ and derive an asymptotic exapnsion of $ru$ in terms of ${1}/{r}$ as $r\to\infty$.

Squeezed cooling of mechanical motion beyond the resolved-sideband limit

Cavity optomechanics provides a unique platform for controlling micromechanical systems by means of optical fields that crosses the classical-quantum boundary to achieve solid foundations for quantum technologies. Currently, optomechanical resonators have become promising candidates for the development of precisely controlled nano-motors, ultrasensitive sensors and robust quantum information processors. For all these applications, a crucial requirement is to cool the mechanical resonators down to their quantum ground states. In this paper, we present a novel cooling scheme to further cool a micromechanical resonator via the noise squeezing effect. One quadrature in such a resonator can be squeezed to induce enhanced fluctuation in the other, "heated" quadrature, which can then be used to cool the mechanical motion via conventional optomechanical coupling. Our theoretical analysis and numerical calculations demonstrate that this squeeze-and-cool mechanism offers a quick technique for deeply cooling a macroscopic mechanical resonator to an unprecedented temperature region below the zero-point fluctuations.

Volumes of orthogonal groups and unitary groups

The matrix integral has many applications in diverse fields. This review article begins by presenting detailed key background knowledge about matrix integral. Then the volumes of orthogonal groups and unitary groups are computed, respectively. As a unification, we present Mcdonald's volume formula for a compact Lie group. With this volume formula, one can easily derives the volumes of orthogonal groups and unitary groups. Applications are also presented as well. Specifically, The volume of the set of mixed quantum states is computed by using the volume of unitary group. The volume of a metric ball in unitary group is also computed as well. There are no new results in this article, but only detailed and elementary proofs of existing results. The purpose of the article is pedagogical, and to collect in one place many, if not all, of the quantum information applications of the volumes of orthogonal and unitary groups.

Some relationships with \textsc{mg} and \textsc{ddm} are also discussed. We analyze the convergence properties of the iterative schemes by using the matrix integrals associated with alternating projectors, and demonstrate the convergence behaviors of the randomized iterative methods by numerical examples.

Orthogonally Polarized Kerr Frequency Combs

Kerr optical frequency combs with multi-gigahertz spacing have previously been demonstrated in chip-scale microresonators, with potential applications in coherent communication, spectroscopy, arbitrary waveform generation, and radio frequency photonic oscillators. In general, the harmonics of a frequency comb are identically polarized in a single microresonator. In this work, we report that one comb in one polarization is generated by an orthogonally polarized soliton comb and two low-noise, orthogonally polarized combs interact with each other and exist simultaneously in a single microresonator. The second comb generation is attributed to the strong cross-phase modulation with the orthogonally polarized soliton comb and the high peak power of the intracavity soliton pulse. Experimental results show that a second frequency comb is excited even when a continuous wave light as a "seed"-with power as low as 0.1 mW-is input, while its own power level is below the threshold of comb generation. Moreover, the second comb has a concave envelope, which is different from the sech2 envelope of the soliton comb. This is due to the frequency mismatch between the harmonics and the resonant frequency. We also find that the repetition rates of these two combs coincide, although two orthogonal resonant modes are characterized by different free spectral ranges.

On the global existence and stability of 3-D viscous cylindrical circulatory flows

In this paper, we are concerned with the global existence and stability of a 3-D perturbed viscous circulatory flow around an infinite long cylinder. This flow is described by 3-D compressible Navier-Stokes equations. By introducing some suitably weighted energy spaces and establishing a priori estimates, we show that the 3-D cylindrical symmetric circulatory flow is globally stable in time when the corresponding initial states are perturbed suitably small.
