The total density profile of DM halos fitted from strong lensing

In cosmological N-body simulations, the baryon effects on the cold dark matter (CDM) halos can be used to solve the small scale problems in $Λ$CDM cosmology, such as cusp-core problem and missing satellites problem. It turns out that the resultant total density profiles (baryons plus CDM), for halos with mass ranges from dwarf galaxies to galaxy clusters, can match the observations of the rotation curves better than NFW profile. In our previous work, however, we found that such density profiles fail to match the most recent strong gravitational lensing observations. In this paper, we do the converse: we fit the most recent strong lensing observations with the predicted lensing probabilities based on the so-called $(α,β,γ)$ double power-law profile, and use the best-fit parameters ($α=3.04, β=1.39, γ=1.88$) to calculate the rotation curves. We find that, at outer parts for a typical galaxy, the rotation curve calculated with our fitted density profile is much lower than observations and those based on simulations, including the NFW profile. This again verifies and strengthen the conclusions in our previous works: in $Λ$CDM paradigm, it is difficult to reconcile the contradictions between the observations for rotation curves and strong gravitational lensing.

Massive Quiescent Galaxies at z>3 in The Millennium Simulation Populated by A Semi-analytic Galaxy Formation Model

We take advantage of the statistical power of the large-volume dark-matter-only Millennium simulation, combined with a sophisticated semi-analytic galaxy formation model, to explore whether the recently reported $z=3.7$ quiescent galaxy ZF-COSMOS-20115 (ZF; Glazebrook et al. 2017) can be accommodated in current galaxy formation models. In our model, a population of quiescent galaxies (QGs) with stellar masses and star formation rates comparable to those of ZF naturally emerges at redshifts $z<4$. There are two and five ZF analogues at the redshift $3.86$ and $3.58$ in the Millennium simulation volume, respectively. We demonstrate that, while the $z>3.5$ massive QGs are rare (about 2\% of the galaxies with the similar stellar masses), the existing AGN feedback model implemented in the semi-analytic galaxy formation model can successfully explain the formation of the high-redshift QGs as it does on their lower redshift counterparts.

Baryon effects on the dark matter halos constrained from strong gravitational lensing

Simulations are expected to be the powerful tool to investigate the baryon effects on dark matter (DM) halos. Recent high resolution, cosmological hydrodynamic simulations (\citealt{Cintio14}, DC14) predict that the inner density profiles of DM halos depend systematically on the ratio of stellar to DM mass ($M_{\ast}/M_{\rm halo}$) which is thought to be able to provide good fits to the observed rotation curves of galaxies. The DC14 profile is fitted from the simulations which are confined to $M_{\rm halo}\le 10^{12}M_{\sun}$, in order to investigate the physical processes that may affect all halos, we extrapolate it to much larger halo mass, including that of galaxy clusters. The inner slope of DC14 profile is flat for low halo mass, it approaches 1 when the halo mass increases towards $10^{12}M_{\sun}$ and decreases rapidly after that mass. We use DC14 profile for lenses and find that it predicts too few lenses compared with the most recent strong lensing observations SQLS (\citealt{Inada12}). We also calculate the strong lensing probabilities for a simulated density profile which continues the halo mass from the mass end of DC14 ($\sim 10^{12}M_{\sun}$) to the mass that covers the galaxy clusters (\citealt{Schaller15}, Schaller15), and find that this Schaller15 model predict too many lenses compared with other models and SQLS observations. Interestingly, Schaller15 profile has no core, however, like DC14, the rotation curves of the simulated halos are in excellent agreement with observational data. Furthermore, we show that the standard two-population model SIS+NFW cannot match the most recent SQLS observations for large image separations.

Two Categories of Indoor Interactive Dynamics of a Large-scale Human Population in a WiFi covered university campus

To explore large-scale population indoor interactions, we analyze 18,715 users' WiFi access logs recorded in a Chinese university campus during 3 months, and define two categories of human interactions, the event interaction (EI) and the temporal interaction (TI). The EI helps construct a transmission graph, and the TI helps build an interval graph. The dynamics of EIs show that their active durations are truncated power-law distributed, which is independent on the number of involved individuals. The transmission duration presents a truncated power-law behavior at the daily timescale with weekly periodicity. Besides, those `leaf' individuals in the aggregated contact network may participate in the `super-connecting cliques' in the aggregated transmission graph. Analyzing the dynamics of the interval graph, we find that the probability distribution of TIs' inter-event duration also displays a truncated power-law pattern at the daily timescale with weekly periodicity, while the pairwise individuals with burst interactions are prone to randomly select their interactive locations, and those individuals with periodic interactions have preferred interactive locations.

Switching between positive and negative group delay of the optical pulse refection from layer structures with a Graphene sheet

In this paper, we investigate the propagation of the light pulse reflected from the layer system with a graphene layer. We show a tunable transition between positive and negative group delay of the optical pulse reflection in such a layered system controlled by the properties of the graphene layer, and reveal two mechanisms to control the propagation properties of the light reflected from such systems. It is demonstrated that the reflected group delays are greatly tunable from positive and negative values in both mechanisms of resonances and the excitations of the surface plasmon resonances, which are adjusted by tuning the Fermi energy and temperature of the graphene layer. Our results are helpful to control the pulse propagations and are useful for design of graphene-based optical devices.

A Survey on Mobile Edge Networks: Convergence of Computing, Caching and Communications

As the explosive growth of smart devices and the advent of many new applications, traffic volume has been growing exponentially. The traditional centralized network architecture cannot accommodate such user demands due to heavy burden on the backhaul links and long latency. Therefore, new architectures which bring network functions and contents to the network edge are proposed, i.e., mobile edge computing and caching. Mobile edge networks provide cloud computing and caching capabilities at the edge of cellular networks. In this survey, we make an exhaustive review on the state-of-the-art research efforts on mobile edge networks. We first give an overview of mobile edge networks including definition, architecture and advantages. Next, a comprehensive survey of issues on computing, caching and communication techniques at the network edge is presented respectively. The applications and use cases of mobile edge networks are discussed. Subsequently, the key enablers of mobile edge networks such as cloud technology, SDN/NFV and smart devices are discussed. Finally, open research challenges and future directions are presented as well.

Distributed Edge Caching Scheme Considering the Tradeoff Between the Diversity and Redundancy of Cached Content

Caching popular contents at the edge of cellular networks has been proposed to reduce the load, and hence the cost of backhaul links. It is significant to decide which files should be cached and where to cache them. In this paper, we propose a distributed caching scheme considering the tradeoff between the diversity and redundancy of base stations' cached contents. Whether it is better to cache the same or different contents in different base stations? To find out this, we formulate an optimal redundancy caching problem. Our goal is to minimize the total transmission cost of the network, including cost within the radio access network (RAN) and cost incurred by transmission to the core network via backhaul links. The optimal redundancy ratio under given system configuration is obtained with adapted particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. We analyze the impact of important system parameters through Monte-Carlo simulation. Results show that the optimal redundancy ratio is mainly influenced by two parameters, which are the backhaul to RAN unit cost ratio and the steepness of file popularity distribution. The total cost can be reduced by up to 54% at given unit cost ratio of backhaul to RAN when the optimal redundancy ratio is selected. Under typical file request pattern, the reduction amount can be up to 57%.

SDSS J1640+1932: a spectacular galaxy-quasar strong lens system

We present Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) MegaCam observations of a galaxy-quasar strong gravitational lens system, SDSS J1640+1932. This system, located at z=0.195 (foreground elliptical galaxy) and z=0.778 (background quasar), was first visually identified by us in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) database. Our CFHT imaging with an angular resolution of 0.7$^{\prime \prime}$ clearly resolves 4 lensed images and a nearly complete Einstein ring. Modeling the system with a singular isothermal ellipsoid (SIE) total mass distribution, we find an Einstein radius of ${2.49^{\prime \prime}}_{-0.049}^{+0.063}$ enclosing a inferred mass of $7.25_{-0.29}^{+0.37}\times10^{11} M_{\odot}$. The quasar and its host galaxy have been magnified by a factor of 23, and the time delay relative to the leading image is determined to be 23.4-25.2 days. These parameters vary minimally when our model is fitted to the {\it{g}}-, {\it{r}}- or {\it{i}}-band images.

A geodesic feedback law to decouple the full and reduced attitude

This paper presents a novel approach to the problem of almost global attitude stabilization. The reduced attitude is steered along a geodesic path on the n-sphere. Meanwhile, the full attitude is stabilized on SO(n). This action, essentially two maneuvers in sequel, is fused into one smooth motion. Our algorithm is useful in applications where stabilization of the reduced attitude takes precedence over stabilization of the full attitude. A two parameter feedback gain affords further trade-offs between the full and reduced attitude convergence speed. The closed loop kinematics on SO(3) are solved for the states as functions of time and the initial conditions, providing precise knowledge of the transient dynamics. The exact solutions also help us to characterize the asymptotic behavior of the system such as establishing the region of attraction by straightforward evaluation of limits. The geometric flavor of these ideas is illustrated by a numerical example.

Deciding Irreducibility/Indecomposability of Feedback Shift Registers is NP-hard

Feedback shift registers(FSRs) are a fundamental component in electronics and secure communication. An FSR $f$ is said to be reducible if all the output sequences of another FSR $g$ can also be generated by $f$ and the FSR $g$ has less memory than $f$. An FSR is said to be decomposable if it has the same set of output sequences as a cascade connection of two FSRs. It is proved that deciding whether FSRs are irreducible/indecomposable is NP-hard.

On viscosity solution of HJB equations with state constraints and reflection control

Motivated by a control problem of a certain queueing network we consider a control problem where the dynamics is constrained in the nonnegative orthant $\mathbb{R}_+$ of the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space and controlled by the reflections at the faces/boundaries. We define a discounted value function associated to this problem and show that the value function is a viscosity solution to a certain HJB equation in $\mathbb{R}_+$ with nonlinear Neumann type boundary condition. Under certain conditions, we also characterize this value function as the unique solution to this HJB equation.

Direct Observation of Long-range field-effect from gate tuning of non-local conductivity

We report the observation of an unexpected, long-range field-effect in WTe$_2$ devices, leading to large gate-induced changes of the transport properties of crystals much thicker than the electrostatic screening length. The phenomenon --which manifests itself very differently from the conventional field-effect-- originates from the non-local nature of transport in the devices that are thinner than the carrier mean free path, because of the dominant role of surface scattering. We reproduce theoretically the gate dependence of the measured classical and quantum magneto-transport in all detail, and show that the phenomenon is caused by the gate-tuning of the bulk carrier mobility by changing the scattering at the surface. Our results demonstrate the possibility to gate tune the electronic properties deep in the interior of conducting materials, avoiding limitations imposed by electrostatic screening.

Distributed sampled-data control of nonholonomic multi-robot systems with proximity networks

This paper considers the distributed sampled-data control problem of a group of mobile robots connected via distance-induced proximity networks. A dwell time is assumed in order to avoid chattering in the neighbor relations that may be caused by abrupt changes of positions when updating information from neighbors. Distributed sampled-data control laws are designed based on nearest neighbour rules, which in conjunction with continuous-time dynamics results in hybrid closed-loop systems. For uniformly and independently initial states, a sufficient condition is provided to guarantee synchronization for the system without leaders. In order to steer all robots to move with the desired orientation and speed, we then introduce a number of leaders into the system, and quantitatively establish the proportion of leaders needed to track either constant or time-varying signals. All these conditions depend only on the neighborhood radius, the maximum initial moving speed and the dwell time, without assuming a prior properties of the neighbor graphs as are used in most of the existing literature.

Achieving Energy Efficiency in Cloud Brokering

The proliferation of cloud providers has brought substantial interoperability complexity to the public cloud market, in which cloud brokering has been playing an important role. However, energy-related issues for public clouds have not been well addressed in the literature. In this paper, we claim that the broker is also situated in a perfect position where necessary actions can be taken to achieve energy efficiency for public cloud systems, particularly through job assignment and scheduling. We formulate the problem by a mixed integer program and prove its NP-hardness. Based on the complexity analysis, we simplify the problem by introducing admission control on jobs. In the sequel, optimal job assignment can be done straightforwardly and the problem is transformed into improving job admission rate by scheduling on two coupled phases: data transfer and job execution. The two scheduling phases are further decoupled and we develop efficient scheduling algorithm for each of them. Experimental results show that the proposed solution can achieve significant reduction on energy consumption with admission rates improved as well, even in large-scale public cloud systems.

Probing the Electronic States in Black Phosphorus Vertical Heterostructures

Atomically thin black phosphorus (BP) is a promising two-dimensional material for fabricating electronic and optoelectronic nano-devices with high mobility and tunable bandgap structures. However, the charge-carrier mobility in few-layer phosphorene (monolayer BP) is mainly limited by the presence of impurity and disorders. In this study, we demonstrate that vertical BP heterostructure devices offer great advantages in probing the electron states of monolayer and few-layer phosphorene at temperatures down to 2 K through capacitance spectroscopy. Electronic states in the conduction and valence bands of phosphorene are accessible over a wide range of temperature and frequency. Exponential band tails have been determined to be related to disorders. Unusual phenomena such as the large temperature-dependence of the electron state population in few-layer phosphorene have been observed and systematically studied. By combining the first-principles calculation, we identified that the thermal excitation of charge trap states and oxidation-induced defect states were the main reasons for this large temperature dependence of the electron state population and degradation of the on-off ratio in phosphorene field-effect transistors.

Multi-resource Energy-efficient Routing in Cloud Data Centers with Networks-as-a-Service

With the rapid development of software defined networking and network function virtualization, researchers have proposed a new cloud networking model called Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) which enables both in-network packet processing and application-specific network control. In this paper, we revisit the problem of achieving network energy efficiency in data centers and identify some new optimization challenges under the NaaS model. Particularly, we extend the energy-efficient routing optimization from single-resource to multi-resource settings. We characterize the problem through a detailed model and provide a formal problem definition. Due to the high complexity of direct solutions, we propose a greedy routing scheme to approximate the optimum, where flows are selected progressively to exhaust residual capacities of active nodes, and routing paths are assigned based on the distributions of both node residual capacities and flow demands. By leveraging the structural regularity of data center networks, we also provide a fast topology-aware heuristic method based on hierarchically solving a series of vector bin packing instances. Our simulations show that the proposed routing scheme can achieve significant gain on energy savings and the topology-aware heuristic can produce comparably good results while reducing the computation time to a large extent.
