Partial Results on Hankel Determinants and the Corresponding J-Fractions of a Sequence Related to Bernoulli Numbers

When exploring the Hankel determinant of the sequence $\mu_{k}=B_{k+1}/(k+1)$, where $B_{k}$ is the $k$-th Bernoulli number, we obtained two interesting results. The first one applies in general to all sequences $(c_{k})_{k\geq0}$ with all even-indexed term $0$, except for $c_{0}$. In this case, the coefficient of the second highest order of the corresponding monic orthogonal polynomials determines the Hankel determinants. Our second result shows, the corresponding J-fractions, obtained from the generating function of $\mu_{k}$, is exactly the same as in early work of Cao, on a faster sequence converging to the Euler--Mascheroni constant.

New central $q$-binomial identities

We establish several new series evaluations involving the central $q$-binomial coefficients, with the inspiration coming from earlier work by Vignat and one of the authors on the limiting case at $q\to 1$.

Multi-headed lattices and Green functions

Lattice geometries and random walks on them are of great interest for their applications in different fields such as physics, chemistry, and computer science. In this work, we focus on multi-headed lattices and study properties of the Green functions for these lattices such as the associated differential equations and the P\'olya numbers. In particular, we complete the analysis of three missing cases in dimensions no larger than five. Our results are built upon an automatic machinery of creative telescoping.

Leading coefficient in the Hankel determinants related to binomial and $q$-binomial transforms

It is a standard result that the Hankel determinants for a sequence stay invariant after performing the binomial transform on this sequence. In this work, we extend the scenario to $q$-binomial transforms and study the behavior of the leading coefficient in such Hankel determinants. We also investigate the leading coefficient in the Hankel determinants for even-indexed Bernoulli polynomials with recourse to a curious binomial transform. In particular, the degrees of these Hankel determinants share the same nature as those in one of the $q$-binomial cases.

Information geometry and $\alpha$-parallel prior of the beta-logistic distribution

The hyperbolic secant distribution has several generalizations with applications in finance. In this study, we explore the dual geometric structure of one such generalization, namely the beta-logistic distribution. Recent findings also interpret Bernoulli and Euler polynomials as moments of specific random variables, treating them as special cases within the framework of the beta-logistic distribution. The current study also uncovers that the beta-logistic distribution admits an $\alpha$-parallel prior for any real number $\alpha$, that has the potential for application in geometric statistical inference.

A central limit theorem for a card shuffling problem

Given a positive integer $n$, consider a random permutation $\tau$ of the set $\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$. In $\tau$, we look for sequences of consecutive integers that appear in adjacent positions: a maximal such a sequence is called a block. Each block in $\tau$ is merged, and after all the merges, the elements of this new set are relabeled from $1$ to the current number of elements. We continue to randomly permute and merge this new set until only one integer is left. In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of $X_n$, the number of permutations needed for this process to end. In particular, we find an explicit asymptotic expression for each of $\mathbf{E}[X_n]$ and $\mathbf{Var} [X_n]$ as well as for every higher central moment, and show that $X_n$ satisfies a central limit theorem.

Hankel determinants and Jacobi continued fractions for $q$-Euler numbers

The $q$-analogs of Bernoulli and Euler numbers were introduced by Carlitz. Similar to the recent results on the Hankel determinants for the $q$-Bernoulli numbers established by Chapoton and Zeng, we determine parallel evaluations for the $q$-Euler numbers. It is shown that the associated Favard-type orthogonal polynomials for $q$-Euler numbers are given by a specialization of the big $q$-Jacobi polynomials, thereby leading to their corresponding Jacobi continued fraction expression, which eventually serves as a key to our determinant evaluations.

Random Walk Models for Nontrivial Identities of Bernoulli and Euler Polynomials

We consider the $1$-dimensional reflected Brownian motion and $3$-dimensional Bessel process and the general models. By decomposing the hitting times of consecutive sites into loops, we obtain identities, called loop identities, for the generating functions of the hitting times. After proving this decomposition both combinatorially and inductively, we consider the case that sites are equally distributed. Then, from loop identities, we derive expressions of Bernoulli and Euler polynomials, in terms of Euler polynomials of higher-orders.

Hankel Determinants of Certain Sequences Of Bernoulli Polynomials: A Direct Proof of an Inverse Matrix Entry from Statistics

We calculate the Hankel determinants of sequences of Bernoulli polynomials. This corresponding Hankel matrix comes from statistically estimating the variance in nonparametric regression. Besides its entries' natural and deep connection with Bernoulli polynomials, a special case of the matrix can be constructed from a corresponding Vandermonde matrix. As a result, instead of asymptotic analysis, we give a direct proof of calculating an entry of its inverse.

Hankel Determinants of shifted sequences of Bernoulli and Euler numbers

Hankel determinants of sequences related to Bernoulli and Euler numbers have been studied before, and numerous identities are known. However, when a sequence is shifted by one unit, the situation often changes significantly. In this paper we use classical orthogonal polynomials and related methods to prove a general result concerning Hankel determinants for shifted sequences. We then apply this result to obtain new Hankel determinant evaluations for a total of $13$ sequences related to Bernoulli and Euler numbers, one of which concerns Euler polynomials.

Hankel Determinants of sequences related to Bernoulli and Euler Polynomials

We evaluate the Hankel determinants of various sequences related to Bernoulli and Euler numbers and special values of the corresponding polynomials. Some of these results arise as special cases of Hankel determinants of certain sums and differences of Bernoulli and Euler polynomials, while others are consequences of a method that uses the derivatives of Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. We also obtain Hankel determinants for sequences of sums and differences of powers and for generalized Bernoulli polynomials belonging to certain Dirichlet characters with small conductors. Finally, we collect and organize Hankel determinant identities for numerous sequences, both new and known, containing Bernoulli and Euler numbers and polynomials.

Orthogonal polynomials and Hankel Determinants for certain Bernoulli and Euler Polynomials

Using continued fraction expansions of certain polygamma functions as a main tool, we find orthogonal polynomials with respect to the odd-index Bernoulli polynomials $B_{2k+1}(x)$ and the Euler polynomials $E_{2k+\nu}(x)$, for $\nu=0, 1, 2$. In the process we also determine the corresponding Jacobi continued fractions (or J-fractions) and Hankel determinants. In all these cases the Hankel determinants are polynomials in $x$ which factor completely over the rationals.

Calculation and Properties of Zonal Polynomials

We investigate the zonal polynomials, a family of symmetric polynomials that appear in many mathematical contexts, such as multivariate statistics, differential geometry, representation theory, and combinatorics. We present two computer algebra packages, in SageMath and in Mathematica, for their computation. With the help of these software packages, we carry out an experimental mathematics study of some properties of zonal polynomials. Moreover, we derive and prove closed forms for several infinite families of zonal polynomial coefficients.

On b-ary binomial coefficients with negative entries

Abstract. We generalize the $b$-ary binomial coefficients with negative entries, which is based on the generating function obtained in early work. Besides an explicit expression involving the restricted partition, several properties such as symmetry, congruence and Pascal-like recurrence are studies. Finally, we also provide two different generalizations, partially satisfying Pascal-like recurrences.

Computation of the Expected Euler Characteristic for the Largest Eigenvalue of a Real Non-central Wishart Matrix

We give an approximate formula for the distribution of the largest eigenvalue of real Wishart matrices by the expected Euler characteristic method for the general dimension. The formula is expressed in terms of a definite integral with parameters. We derive a differential equation satisfied by the integral for the $2 \times 2$ matrix case and perform a numerical analysis of it.

Analytic Continuation for Multiple Zeta Values using Symbolic Representations

We introduce a symbolic representation of $r$-fold harmonic sums at negative indices. This representation allows us to recover and extend some recent results by Duchamp et al., such as recurrence relations and generating functions for these sums. This approach is also applied to the study of the family of extended Bernoulli polynomials, which appear in the computation of harmonic sums at negative indices. It also allows us to reinterpret the Raabe analytic continuation of the multiple zeta function as both a constant term extension of Faulhaber's formula, and as the result of a natural renormalization procedure for Faulhaber's formula.

Connection Coefficients for Higher-order Bernoulli and Euler Polynomials: A Random Walk Approach

We consider the use of random walks as an approach to obtain connection coefficients for higher-order Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. In particular, we consider the cases of a $1$-dimensional linear reflected Brownian motion and of a $3$-dimensional Bessel process. Considering the successive hitting times of two, three, and four fixed levels by these random walks yields non-trivial identities that involve higher-order Bernoulli and Euler polynomials.

Orthogonal Polynomials and Lattice Path Interpretation for Higher-order Euler Polynomials

We study the higher-order Euler polynomials and give the corresponding monic orthogonal polynomials, which are Meixner-Pollaczek polynomials with certain arguments and constant factors. Moreover, through a general connection between moments of random variables and the generalized Motzkin numbers, we can obtain a new recurrence formula and a matrix representation for the higher-order Euler polynomials, interpreting them as weighted lattice paths.
